The NES Mini / Classic Edition is a 'hot' item, as Nintendo admits, and we're running out of time as the big N attempts to meet demand for festive shoppers; it's looking like a long-shot, sadly, but hope remains.
In any case, for those still enjoying the system early next year - or who decide to grab one once stock is more plentiful - there's an interesting third-party accessory on the way to put original controllers to work. Though the system comes with an excellent recreation of the original pad, it only includes one in the box, and some would no doubt love to dig out their old controllers to bring back happy memories. The Pro NES Controller to NES Classic Edition Adapter, by Retro Fighters, should make that possible.
It already has an Amazon US listing for a 15th January release date and a $14.99 price tag, with Retro Fighters confirming to us that it is indeed due out next month. As the product listing shows, it supports retro pads and can even be used with Wii and Wii U; in the case of the latter two systems we assume it'd have to be plugged into a synchronised Wii Remote (or two) and thus operate as a Classic Controller adapter.
- Play your favorite retro games using classic gaming accessories
- Pro Retro Adapter is compatible with NES Classic Edition/Wii U/Wii
- 2 Player design allows up to 2 players to use the adapter on the NES Classic Edition or Wii U / Wii
- Easy plug and play design, simply plug in your favorite retro NES accessory and play
- Works on original and 3rd party NES accessories, controllers and joysticks (some functionality may vary)
Retro Fighters also tells us that it'll include nostalgic extras, "like an NES-style instruction booklet and a Retro Fighters character keychain".

Now this is what we should have seen from the get-go.
This is what shoulda been. If it works without problems, I would love to get it. An actual NES controller in my hand instead of its Mini-Me? Yes please!
I can't see why third parties are making accessories for systems that nobody owns.
Except all my 3 old nes control pads are stuffed. The rubber membranes have broken down and split so they all have at least one bad button. Im keener generally on the 8bitdo wirelless receiver, just hope they end up selling it separately like the other ones they sell for nes and snes
That's great, but I'd also like an adapter that goes the other way. We have brand new, first-party NES controllers being produced for the first time in decades and I want to be able to attach mine to an original NES (or even my AVS).
Great stuff
For about the same price as buying a Mini NES controller, this seems like a worthy investment as I have 2 of my own original, functioning, NES controllers still. May have to give this a look (which will be hard to do if I never get a Mini Classic NES first...)
Oh yeah, time to bust out the U-Force and Powerglove... for five whole minutes... three of those minutes are setting them up.
Excellent, this means I could plug in a dog bone controller from the NES 2, they're way more comfortable to hold than the original rectangle with sharp corners. Now if only I could plug the FourScore into this adapter so I can get auto-fire for Super C...
@Tempestryke The controller that comes with the NES Classic Mini is the EXACT same size as the original controller, only the console itself is miniaturized.
@ThanosReXXX
I'm referring to the puny cord.
@Tempestryke Aha, okay... Well that was totally not clear from the "mini-me" and "actual controller" comments.
A cool little adapter but since I'm looking to preserving my old NES controllers, I'll probably give this one a pass but it's nice that third parties are helping to solve the short controller cord issues.
@Tempstryke the Mini-Controller has the same size and feels exactly the same as the original one.
Does anyone know of a SNES to NES adapter?
no ones gonna say its too expensive?
thats a first
Will definitely buy this so I can try my NES zapper on duck hunt. If it doesn't work out I still have the control pads.
@StAidan Excellent point. One of the biggest bug bears of collecting for old systems is having worn out first party pads. Being able to buy brand new pads developed by Nintendo which worked on their old systems as well as their new mini systems would be great. Just like the recent new GC controllers they did. I bought 2 of those for my GC, never used them on my Wii U.
@Tempestryke what do you mean man... The NES controllers and Mini NES controllers are EXACTLY the same... I tried to spot differences looking at them, putting them on top of each other, using them to play... I'd really be interested to know what differences you found...
@gb_nes_gamer You'll need (at least) an analogic TV... But you probably already know that man.
Affordable and lengthens the distance from the console. Sold.
@StAidan
You can use an NES Retro Reciever to do just that, provided you have a Wiimote to attach the nes classic controller to. I have a SNES retro receiver myself, and the Wiimote + CC combo work perfectly on my SNES. I don't see how it would be any different for the NES version. It also doubles as an XInput capable PC controller, if you're into that as well.

@ElGrego What have people been complaining about? The Short Cords. If you had bothered to read my other responses, you would know that I have Already addressed someone else's mis-assumptions.
@GraveLordXD Cool, thanks man, I have seen cirka around but never read any reviews. Might have to invest in a couple for my originale NES. Cheers!
@GraveLordXD For a long time I couldnt decide if Faxanadu or Wizards and Warriors 3 was my favourite game of all time. But then i remember Battletoads, Double Dragon 3 (Yep I like that one - it is hard but my dad and I conquered it many times even though I totally carried him and he always lost Chin and Ranzou in the Egypt jumping parts) and strangely I freaking looooove Captain Skyhawk, even though its pretty easy I like the music and the gameplay variations. I think maybe faxanadu still tops out. ...But then solstice, maniac mansion, and even a boy and his blob... oh man I loved my nintendo based childhood...
I dont even mention zelda 1 & 2 or super mario 3 for nes because they're pre-requisites to choosing an actual favourite favourite, like a favourite of all the rest of the games. Because if you dont like those games on NES you have no soul and aren't allowed to play nintendo in whichever afterlife you do or do not believe in.
@GraveLordXD Battle of Olympus, love that one as well. My dad drew maps of the zelda dungeons so i know what you mean on that, awesome that even your grandmother got in on that!
Games were amazing back then, they can still be amazing, but too many games are all about what i refer to as cruddy 3d graphics and shooting pixels. Those aren't games unless you really enjoy beingg teabagged repeatedly by 10 year olds with sharper reflexes than you. Real games are rpgs and are hard and use your imagination. Wonder if this is how my grandparents felt books vs video games... then i remember my grandfather also played Game Boy and bought a SNES! lol
