Zygarde was one of the great mysteries towards the end of the last generation, with new forms being introduced and no game to tie them together, but Pokémon Sun and Moon finally provide the first time that these forms are usable in a main game.
Getting these forms is a convoluted process where, once given the Zygarde Cube, you have to scour the entire Alola Region looking for cells. When you have enough, you can then combine the cells in the Aether Base in Route 16 in order to get a Zygarde. 10 Cells create a Zygarde 10% Forme while 50 Cells create a Zygarde 50% Forme.
When you start off doing this, the Zygarde you get have the Aura Break ability and can be dismantled completely at the base. If you trade away the Zygarde, you will lose these cells forever, but you can dismantle Zygarde obtained in trades to get more cells if necessary.
Sounds complicated, right? Well unfortunately it is and there is no way of tracking the location of all the cells in the game, but luckily we have a list here, and for precise images you can go to http://www.serebii.net/sunmoon/zygarde.shtml. Some Cells are exclusive to the daytime and others to the night, so you will need to look through areas multiple times; it is easy to miss just one.
There are also five cores you can find in the game. These cores are still just one cell each, but have a special feature of allowing for you to teach your Zygarde a special move. These moves can be taught through the Zygarde Cube item.
So, below are descriptions in list form, and remember the link above (and at the end of the article) has images for more detail.

When you have managed to obtain all 100 cells, or just obtained 100 cells through dismantling Zygarde you obtained through trade or transfer, then you can combine all of them into a Zygarde with the Power Construct ability. This ability will turn Zygarde into the Complete Forme Zygarde when its health drops below 50%. This causes its stats to change including massive Hit Points, making it one of the more powerful Pokémon in the game. Power Construct Zygarde cannot be dismantled, but can change their form between 10% and 50% Forme using the Zygarde Cube item.
Let us know how you're getting on in the Zygarde quest in the comments below.

That's a lot of cells to get, but Zygrade is an amazing legendary that is totally worth it.
I can't believe it...
I just said Zygrade...
I just now realized it's ZYGARDE. I've thought it was Zygrade my entire life...
Gosh...so many parts.
Poor Zygarde. No special cutscene or nothing. Just handwaved as being there for reasons and a glorified fetch quest. I still like ya buddy.
yeah a shoehorned legendary that does not even make sense being in the game.
This really reaks of pokemon Z (ZY ZX) that never came to be.
Wow this all sounds confusing. I have a few in the Bank so maybe that will help?
I am missing one in Moon, but got them all in Sun. The 100% form is pretty awesome.
collected 50% of them but still haven't used it yet. I'll have to check it out
Oh so they differ depending on the time of the day. I was wondering how I could have missed a few of them when I was looking through old areas again.
What happens if you collect all 100, then get another 100 through a trade? I want my 200% form. lol
@Joeynator3000 You can create two Zygarde Completes then.
@Mega_Yarn_Poochy ....Was somewhat joking. -w-
And I thought getting the three Regi's were bad. At least with them once you get a guide it's pretty simple. This is just tiresome and pretty dull. It's incredibly annoying when you're just missing one so you have to keep checking old areas to find it. I hope they don't do this again. Or at least if they do, have some kind of tracker to use in game.
I hope Zygarde plays a big role in Pokemon Stars. It's one of my top 5 favorite legendaries. Dexio even said it was a mystery why Zygarde left Kalos and came to Alola anyways, so there's gotta be a reason for that.
When I see Zygarde, I always think of Pokemon, Gundam edition.
What an insult to people wanting Z. It's bad enough we didn't even get a game for it, but no story arc or anything? Just a glorified fetch quest to get the new form? What in God's name is Game Freak thinking?
I was 3 off from 100%, but I just got tired of looking and traded for a 10% Zygarde. I just hope Zygarde will get a deeper exploration into its lore.
@Bolt_Strike Yeah, not only kalos gets the short end of the stick with legendaries quantity, the main legendary doesn't get any lore or third edition making him cover either ._.
@Bolt_Strike Be grateful for what you have.
@XxYoshiGamerxX im new to the name and still thought it was zygrade....
@Interneto How about they make games worth my $40 instead?
@kotag I'm more concerned with Kalos getting the short end of the stick in terms of games, especially when XY were that mediocre. This is a region that desperately needs an update.
@ShadowLuigi2 It left because Kalos wouldn't let it have its complete form.
...I jest, of course. In all seriousness, I think that was a foreshadowing towards the UB crisis that developed later in the game, since Dexio mentioned that line earlier in the game.
But yea, it would be very nice if it actually had a storyline developed around it (I even felt underwhelmed by the anime one). It had so much potential for story material.
I still haven't got around to getting all of the cells since they're all in obscure areas and some of them are only available at day or night. Granted there's a way to change the time in-game, but it will be a pain trying to figure out which ones I got or haven't yet.
@Jayronauron Haha, yeah, and I guess GF wanted to focus on Xerneas and Yveltal. Also yeah you're right, but yet Zygarde still didn't do anything when the UB's actually came. Assuming because it was caught by a trainer.
Maybe it'll finally get it's own story in Pokemon Stars or maybe it'll take part in the main story, but you wouldn't be able to catch it until post game. Yeah, the last arc of the XYZ anime wasn't that great, but the rest of the anime was definitely unique, and I loved every bit of it (except for the results of the Kalos League).
@Bolt_Strike
My guess is that Z was legitimately planned to be a thing, but then GameFreak, seeing that quite a few people didn't really like X/Y, decided to start on Sun/Moon instead.
@Iggly
There is a way to change the day and night cycle.
After you beat the elite four and become champion, get the legendary you caught,
Sun (Solgaleo) & Moon (Lunala) go the corresponding alter on Poni Island.
Then in during night time in sun go to the alter with Solgaleo and it will be day time. During the day time in Lunala go to the alter and it will be night time.
The way I like to think about it going to Kalos is that it went to recharge... in the anime they talked about it feeding off sunlight and where better to collect sunlight than on tropical islands... which would make Resolution Cave like it's holiday home.
@biopack That's what I meant by being able to change the in-game time.
@TheFancySquid Or rather: oversaturation of pokemon games on 3DS and also Pokemon GO success and the anniversary thing with its own advertisements, forced them to scrap Z entirely and move to a new gen. New gen generates bigger hype, and goes well with 20th anniversary with Alolan forms.
i have 88/100 right now, so it might be really hard to figure out what i'm missing.
