Metal Slug is unique in the world of gaming as being a hardcore run-and-gun shooter which practically everyone has heard of.
Despite the fact that it launched on the super-exclusive Neo Geo system in the mid '90s when the world was going giddy over 3D visuals, the first title in the franchise found a solid fanbase and has since gone on to sire several sequels across a wide range of formats. In addition to this, past titles have been lovingly repackaged for digital download and physical bundles, like the Metal Slug Anthology for the Wii.
You might not realise it, but Metal Slug has quite a complex history, and Daniel Ibbertson of Slope's Game Room fame has created one of his typically brilliant and very in-depth videos to tell the tale. The feature includes unique Nintendo-focused offerings such as Metal Slug Advance (GBA) and Metal Slug 7 (DS) as well as every other major entry.
If you're a fan of the franchise or merely want to get up-to-speed, this is well worth a watch.

Contra says Hi
I'm still looking for a copy of the Wii Anthology game.
A nice and passionate episode from this series! Congrats to Mr. Ibbertson!!
Well, it is not difficult to fall for such labor of love to pixels, game music and shooter gameplay!
The state of art for 2D action game!
And one that is almost on almost every console, expect our 3DSs that are begging for a release, old or new, which certainly will add to our collection of great action games on the handheld.
It will be much more charming than that Steam version we still play.
Still hoping for it, SNK! Make it happen!

Alternatively, you could always mod your Wii/Wii U and look for an iso.
@Damo Nice Cannon Fodder reference.
Rocket Lawnchair!
Sorry, but it's not everyone's favourite run n' gun. Contra rules over all else.
Never liked the generic 'Rambo' soldiers in Contra, the Probotector mecha looked much cooler.
As for Metal Slug, the animation and gameplay is leagues ahead of Contra, it really is the best Run n' Gun series out there. And yeah, I have the Neo Geo AES originals......
Konami needs to make more Contra games. If not, then at least a Contra compilation for 3DS or Vita. I'd be all over that.
Man, I always loved playing Metal Slug at the arcades. It was a nice combination of solid run n' gun and just general goofiness.
Always preferred Metal Slug over Contra. SNK did a really good job with KOF 14, so I hope a new Metal Slug happens one day.
@Shiryu A tongue twister if ever there was one...
I just bought the anthology on PS4 last night.
I've been playing this series recently through the PS2 anthology available on PS4.
The first 3 games are fantastic and only get better with each installment, while 4 is a completely competent game it definitely is the low point for the series, 5 & 6 really pick up the pace and deliver the quality action expected, but I just don't find them as remarkable as 1,2/X and 3.
I played 7 way long ago but unfortunately I no longer own that game, I remember it being good though.
Really starting to hope Metal Slug 8 will come one day.
I like gunstar heroes.
Fantastic series and one of my favorites. I like Contra a lot, as those are great games, but I like Metal Slug much more for various reasons. I enjoy the first two a lot, but Metal Slug X is probably my favorite. I was also pleasantly surprised by Metal Slug 5 which I liked a lot as well.
Yeaaaa, my favourite run and gun game is Gunstar Heroes on Sega Genesis
Metal Slug Anthology on Wii is one of the few games I missed out on buying. I keep meaning to buy it but forget and its price can be a bit off-putting.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Depends on what you're willing to spend. $24 - $30 for the entire compilation isn't expensive in my opinion.
And in your area, prices aren't that bad either:

I specifically avoided the Anthology on the Wii, as none of the control options sounds like a good way to play these games, in my opinion. I opted for the PS2 version when I got it. It isn't perfect, but at least it controls properly.
Metal Slug >>>>>>>> Contra
That is all.
Cool! I just bought the anthology on PS4. Love it so far!
Loving the conclusion at the end...
Makes me want to dig out my copy of Metal Slug Anthology .....
@Shiryu This made ma lol
Again thank you for showcasing my Video @Damo
Mucho Love NintendoLife
Just picked up the Metal Slug Anthology on my PS4 for $10! Normally $20 but was on sale!
No love for Contra in this website.
Picking up the Metal Slug Anthology for $18 back in 2007 for my wii was a great purchase!
@efaulk84
Don't bother with that compilation. I own a copy and they're pretty poor ports. MAME 'em, instead.
Maybe I'll get a chance to play the series on the switch..
@djslope Great video. I enjoyed watching it, and I so agree with your assessment of the various games.
Grabbed some copies of the series predecessors you mentioned as well, to add to my MAME collection, since I didn't know these games yet.
When it comes to sprite work, everyone else can just go home and find something more worthwhile to do with their time. Unfortunately, this goes for the difficulty as well. A legit Slug arcade is liable to accumulate debt and poverty so bad, your next three generations of descendants are going to suffer for it.
Got my 2 Neo Geo 2 sticks for Wii with Wii VC copies ready for some juicy 2-player Metal Slug action. Next best thing to the arcades!
Nice video! Hopefully we see the enhanced version of Metal slug 7 on Switch. I have never played Metal slug 7, and I would really love to!
@Pahvi thanks for the confirmation. I've heard even using the Gamecube pad is flawed as it only supports the analog stick and not the d-pad.
@efaulk84 Me too
@sketchturner How much was it? Because I didn't know you could even buy it on the PS4?
