Back in 2012 Square Enix published the excellent Bravely Default on the 3DS, one of the most beloved JRPGs of recent memory. A sequel followed on the same console, but since then we've heard little about the future of the franchise - until now.
The official Bravely Default Twitter account has tweeted a lovely piece of artwork to celebrate the fourth birthday of the series, along with the following message:
It's Bravely's four-year anniversary! We apologize as news has been scant recently. There may be something soon….!?
A third Bravely game is almost certainly going to come at some point, but the big question is format - will this be on the NX, or could we see another 3DS outing? Perhaps the franchise will move to non-Nintendo systems?

For Wii U? I thought not.
Another Bravely game would be awesome. But I really would like them to do a whole new setting. Super long JRPGs like this shouldn't be so closely tied together imho.
Though as I recall Bravely Second did have some sequel bait at the end just like Default did before it...
Much excite.
Hopefully it won't be censored to hell this time.
Bravely Third as a launch window title for NX? Would make sense if the reveal is going to be soon as we're also expecting the NX reveal soon.
Could be another case of NX secrecy preventing them from saying anything until the official announcement.
Bravely 2nd totally ended setting up another sequel. Would be disappointed if there WASN'T a 3rd one after that!
Bravely on the NX please. I love the first two. Those two and Stella Glow are my favorite RPG's on the 3ds
Let it be a PS VR game. 3D doesn't do it for me anymore, I need VR.
I want those plushies now....
If Bravely Default becomes the Square-Enix fantasy JRPG franchise that's "allowed" to stay on Nintendo platforms, I'm not going to complain. At all.
I'd like to see a third game, just hoping they can make this a good franchise overall. I liked Second, but not as much as Default. Default had that fairy tale feeling for me. The "evil one" was an impactful and threatening villain, I personally liked Revo's music in Default more. Meanwhile, Second felt kinda like a direct to video Disney sequel. Also some of the puns almost caused me physical pain (madam Goldiga, Gho Ghettar, Swetti Tracksute...) :/
NINTENDO, SHOW THE NX !
I feel like so much people wants to talk about it but cannnnnn't !
The Bravely games had a ton of potential but never quite lived up to it imho.So sad...
I'm not sure how popular this opinion is going to be here, but I though Bravely Second was supremely disappointing. Terrible writing, an entire reused world map, repeat cities and dungeons with the EXACT SAME layout... and this is after Bravely Default (which I enjoyed a lot) already forced us to re-explore that same world five times in one game!
So yeah, I'd love to see the Bravely series continue, and it would be fantastic if it came to NX... but they absolutely need a fresh start when it comes to characters and setting.
@Piersen "Second felt kinda like a direct to video Disney sequel"
Ha, I think this is the best way I've seen so far to compare the two games.
I remember hearing that they were interested in bringing the series to a console, so I hope this possible news has something to do with NX
Bravely Second definitely left scope for a Third. As much as I'd like to see a lovely NX version, the series feels very much at home 3DS and I'd quite happily see the trilogy out on the handheld.
The first one had promise but was dragged down by its latter half A LOT.
The second one was OK but too similar to the first one and nearly insulting with the all the reuse....
Maybe third time's a charm?
@RainbowGazelle Hopefully by the time a third title is released people will understand the difference between localization and censorship and will quit being whiny...whiners.
I can see it being released on other platforms.
Still waiting to play the first bit excited to hear more should be coming. Probably for Nx or other platforms.
@MarcelRguez I'm getting bad memories of that World Ends With You "Announcement" from a few years back. Man I was so mad to find out it was only a mobile port and not a sequel. T-T
I recon I'm half way thru Bravely Second. Better get a move on.
@Oat I bet it's one of the three reasons why that pic exists. Another one is Chrono Trigger. Don't know about the browser game.
...and I still haven't beaten the first one...sigh.
A bravely third wouldn't be bad
A sequel to my favorite game on 3DS wouldn't be so bad a thing if it stays Nintendo handheld.
Nice underwear
@PanurgeJr You mean people will grasp how localization is a fundamentally additive endeavor that seeks to rebuild the context and nuance lost in a literal translation, while censorship is a fundamentally destructive endeavor that seeks to remove or tone down elements perceived as dangerous to either publisher or audience?
...Nah, not gonna happen.
I doubt it'll be a Bravely Third, not this soon. But I'm sure no matter what it is, it will be good.
4 years!?!
I'm not here to say those were a fast four years but rather I didn't think I played this game four years ago.
@MasterWario Bravely Default was released in JAPAN four years ago, meaning you're right. I distinctively remember getting it at launch in 2014, which is when it came to the West.
I suspect it will be a 3rd game on the 3DS as a quick/cheap way of using the exact same engine again, which is fair enough, but personally I can't tolerate the way the first two were localised.
I haven't played either game (the first demo was ok) are they any good? I've heard they get way too repetitive towards the end?
@Nintendo_Ninja good, reminiscent of final fantasy 5 and 3 but can get very grindy and repetitive. If you don't like turn based combat or grinding, stay away. Otherwise, dig in!
lol. cute outfit. she looks like she's playing baseball.
If they reuse the same artwork again, I'm not buying it.
Never finished Bravely Default. I couldn't bring myself to complete the same damn thing eight times for the bloody ending. I ended up quitting and watching a walkthrough.
As for Second, eh...Christmas present?
Tried the demo for 1 and 2 and didn't think they were that great...
Would love to see this series move to the NX. Wii U had virtually no RPG's compared to past Nintendo systems. There are a couple but a return of the genre to the big screen would be great. NX would be perfect if it's a portable and stationary console. Play big boss battles at home and grind for levels on the subway. It's win-win! I am a big, big fan of this series so I'm hoping there is an announcement in the near future.
I didn't care for either Bravely game. I don't mind old-school games but those games were WAY too old-school for me. Flat characters and the brave/default system wasn't as interesting as it could have been. Plus most of the interesting characters were just one-off bosses that you acquire their class and never hear from again. Plus the padding, omg the padding.
I'd love for the first and second game to get a discount in eShop. The first one has been only once in discount in Europe and I missed it back then...
To raise awareness, they should bring it back to spotlight.
@PanurgeJr Hopefully by the time a third one releases, idiot censorship-apologists will understand the difference between localisation and censorship.
@RainbowGazelle You took an entire day to respond and that's the best you could do? Now it makes more sense to me that you see censorship everywhere--you just don't know better. So sad.
@ricklongo while the Second game definitely lost some of it's charm and the dialogue got quite repetitive (I skipped most of it from half-way through), I quite like that the map is the same. It's not often you get direct sequels that are literally in the same world, with the same characters. It's nice seeing a continuation of what happened after the events of the first game.
Plus the ending...damn that blew my mind.
@PanurgeJr I responded to your comment as soon as I saw it; I don't spend my whole day on this site, I have a life. I see censorship where there is censorship, and Bravely Second was certainly a case for needless censorship. Don't be judgemental.
@RainbowGazelle "Judgmental" only has one "e".
@RainbowGazelle Let's drop the insults please.
@PanurgeJr Actually, it can be spelled either way.
@RainbowGazelle I'm just going to take a moment to enjoy the irony of an everything-is-censorship enthusiast altering his (or her; don't wish to assume) comment.
@PanurgeJr I'm not an "everything-is-censorship enthusiast", and it's called making a correction; there's a difference. I can admit when I'm wrong.
