The success of Pokémon GO was always going to lead to imitators, but few are as blatant as PokeLand Legends (also known as Game of Monster: Legacy), a game which doesn't even try to hide the fact that it's ripping off the world famous franchise.
Available on iOS and Android, PokeLand Legends involves catching monsters and evolving them into more powerful forms. The monsters in question are lifted wholesale from the Pokémon series, and even use the same names. It's that shameless.
At the time of writing the game appears to be live on the iOS App Store but not on our local Google Play store, but we'd imagine it's only a matter of time before some kind of action is taken by Nintendo and The Pokémon Company. While there have been clear clones of the company's games in the past, this one really seems to take the biscuit.

lets see if the people who said nintendo were wrong to stop the metroid remake support this game and ask nintendo not to take it down.
I would have downloaded for the fun of it but sadly it is not on the Android store for me also.
lol, giving it a download now before it's gone. This is so bad!
You can't just go after one developer stealing your IP, you've gotta catch 'em all.
it looks all right, but I'm mostly looking forward to Mega Maryo Run.
Who is allowing these things onto the stores in the first place? Was the regulator having a nap or something??
it's a broken game.
Based on some App Store reviews the current version seems to have removed all evidence of copyright infringement; although the images on the store page show a few.
Probably to entice people to download.
Also, originated from China; about as surprising as the milk in this morning's cereal being white in colour.
What I find funny about this game is that wild Pokémon get killed in the battles as shown by Magnemites death animation.
Nintendo lawyers be like
(I was actually going for Helicarriers shooting their cannons as seen in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but I couldn't find a gif of that)
Game of Monster is on my Play Store. The screenshots however don't show this amount of pokemon-models rip-off like in the video. The creatures are still knock offs tho (Lugia-Yveltal one for example).
This actually looks surprisingly fun, in spite (or maybe because) of the horribly bad English
I only watched a minute of the video, but I don't see this being an imitator of Pokémon Go at all, this looks like the mainline Pokémon games which have been popular for 20 years. 19 years before Go was a thing.
i recognize that boi, hes the gym leader who lives in the eiffel tower right
I was thinking "I bet even the other resources we don't recognize from pokémon are stolen from another game" then the charmander did an emote from Ragnarok Online.
It looks like a freemium poorly translated pokémon MMO.
@KTT Don't be fooled by the marketing images; the in-game models are ripped straight from the PokéMon games. I just checked it myself. The game also offers in-app purchases, meaning these guys are making money with this copyright infringement. Hope they enjoy getting sued.
If you write a news for every ripped of game, you'll have an Infinite supply.
But it is true this one has balls. It went all out with a big video campaign completely using Pokémons, the music, etc..., then with enough players, has patched them out with obvious ripoffs but IP-law compliants.
We're getting a lot of PokéMon-related news today, no? The only thing that could top off a day like this is the reveal of Pokkén Tournament's new fighter.
I kinda wanna try it out, lol.
@FX102A As surprising as it can be, you can find cloners everywhere in the world. I've known a few from the US and UK.
China, not surprised. Land of IP Rip offs.
I wonder if Magic Elves (formerly Pocket Master/Elves Union/Elves Frontier?) is still active? That's another Pokemon related thing. Doesn't really play like Pokemon, but most of the 'monsters' are cute girl versions of Pokemon.
@kobashi100 This is different because there's near zero chance these developers aren't monetising this App, which means it's nothing like some fan project offered to people for free and for the sole purpose of celebrating Nintendo's beloved franchises and old games with no intent to abuse or profit off Nintendo's IP at all. In the case of this Pokemon App it's literally IP infringement in all the ways the law exists to prevent.
It would probably help if you actually knew the difference.
Poor unfortunate souls... eh, customers will got tricked by Fake Pokemon games.
Hope they enjoy the money for a while, because it'll all have to be paid back when a lawsuit happens. Don't people read the copyright laws anymore, or is there that much greed?...wait, I already know the answer...it's both and people have no common sense anymore!
@impurekind Except those fan games are also infringement despite being free and celebrating franchises.
@MrGawain : Oh, Mew!
@TheLZdragon Let's not argue about it; you don't know enough about IP/Copyright law to do so. And, if you think you do (even if you're a literal corporate lawyer), it's likely because you simply believe whatever you're told about such laws without ever really questioning or investigating them beyond the stuff you're supposed to believe to be true simply on the face of it. Nintendo tells you it's IP/Copyright infringement therefor it must be—just like this case:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Great_Giana_Sisters
A great example of where everyone has come to simply believe over time that Nintendo was in the right and the developers where in wrong (legally), as perpetuated by the likes of Nintendo lawyers and random laymen, when that's not actually the truth of the matter at all. Nintendo didn't actually have any real legal case at all, but just try telling the "Interneters" that and changing their misguided childhood beliefs and now basically their whole world view. . . .
Knockoffs like this are almost never anywhere near as good as the game they're ripping off.
Looks totally original to me. Don´t see any similarities whatsoever.
Looks good to me. Can't see the similarities
@Zanark maybe you need glasses or if you wear them a new set? (jk)
@impurekind Okay. So rather than be snarky and dismissive (and I say that with all due respect) educate us on the difference, in layman's terms, between the two situations. I have to think its much more than a monetization thing.
@MrGawain lol
I'd imagine some people would say it is okay, because Nintendo/GameFreak don't service this market themselves.
Also, the human characters are pretty unflattering designs compared to what we're seeing in Sun and Moon.
@FX102A Hmm... I'm not sure about the iOS version, but the Android version is definitely using PokéMon's resources. I've downloaded the app, and I can confirm it, even though the Google Play page shows slightly more unique monsters.
The iOS version is different. I don't know I guess this is a Nintendo fan site and every one loves Nintendo and are loyal to them and want to support them and their ip.
But gotta say it's quite good. People should get it while they can or the Nintendo fan police will report it
Oddly enough, I got an ad for this game while using the YouTube app, and it even showed the PokéMon models, rather than try to cover up with close-but-not-quite-the-same versions of them, like they do on the Google Play page. I can't link it, because I can't find it, meaning the video might be unlisted.
Even if it wasn't a ripoff, that messy HUD is enough reason for me to stay away.
@AlexSora89 The message still shines through though
@impurekind Exceptions to the copyright law include educational and fair use.
Educational use only allows educators in a physical classroom to use works without permission.
Fair use allows review or parody of copyrighted works among other exceptions.
Fan games like the Metroid one are not considered parody or review and rip out trademarks like Samus the character, the Metroid logo, and is considered a similar work to the original source. Despite the fact that it's non-profit, it's still considered infringement due to its similarity.
Going back to a point you made, I don't assume Nintendo is always in the right. However, that doesn't mean that fans are either.
Well at least we know the Nintendo Legal team never gets bored. Too much work to do. Can somebody wake up the Marketing department though?
@allav866 I was hoping they have quickly replaced the pokemon models with their own creatures because of N's copyright/trademark claims.
After watching the video its not exactly what I expected from a carbon copy
So I've got to raise my intimacy with my pet to unlock its maximum potential, huh.
Clemont wanted the spotlight
@KTT Well, I guess those screenshots are from the iOS version, which doesn't rip off of PokéMon, and maybe now that the word is out that their Android version uses PokéMon resources, they might be tempted to update it and replace their ad with a copyright-friendlier one.
@Ed_Fairway
As bright as the armors? I mean — cough — armours?
Is it bad that I think this game looks kinda fun...?
I've had this game for a while and it's pretty fun. Also isn't called Game of Monster on the Google Play Store?
Can't find it on the iOS App Store, under either name listed.
lol. looks more fun than Pokemon Go (at least until they add trainer battles).
@kobashi100
That's a terrible analogy. This is a something they're claiming is their own and trying to make money off.
The Metroid remake was free and he was honest that it was Nintendo's IP.
@impurekind Popular fan games monetize pretty often by using download sites with adds and putting paypal link to their homepage.
I say let it stay. If it's bad, it'll sink into the abyss with the millions of other forgotten apps. If it's decent, then that deserves leniency and recognition.
I would consider the Metroid fan remake to be something skirting the line between a mod and a new Zero Mission like game, instead of being a ripoff. Nintendo doesn't seem to have any intention of appealing to their own core base by making such a game, and no money is being made off of it, so I would support it.
This Chinese Pokémon mobile game, on the other hand, is absolutely being monetized, is not a mod at all, and is a completely new game that isn't based on any existing one. This cannot be defended at all, and it does represent a threat to Nintendo.
Funny how Nintendo has gone after almost none of the seemingly countless Pokémon mods/new games using their base version's assets (some of them being amazingly intricate, like the Prism version mod of Crystal, and the Dark Energy mod of Silver), but somehow, the Metroid 2 Remake is fair game. I guess the upcoming new age Pokemon Prism, being made by those who made the Pokemon Brown/Prism mod, will suffer the same fate as Uranium...?
Rest assured, when Pokémon Prism releases, this topic will come up again. And I, for one, will defend it. It's a ROM hack, and is not a threat to Nintendo at all.
@Rhydas Well each to their own my friend
Lol i actually played this game. Good gameplay.
so the genius developers and business bosses of Niantic just blocked rooted and jailbreak devices, custom rom users and not to mention blocked users who updated their smartphones os lol. Cool huh?
And oh, btw... They never killed botters and fakegps users because in the beginning, bot apps and fakegps apps does NOT even need root access. The newer apps which are better though need root access lol.
Pokeland legends is much better, and the new pokehouse 3d 😂😂😂
and yeah, there are millions of users who needs root access for valid reasons. not sure on the jailbreak part though... so i'd say that was a s2pid move for them killing the game. 😂
and now... your going to bring down a good game that FOR ALL THOSE WHO HAVEN'T PLAYED IT, its much better and looks official. Dont judge the cover photo of the game or so, but check the gameplay on YouTube!
It's not in playstore because they took it down. Google the apk file or check the fb page. fyi
you know Guys I support this game pla rather than walking around and Youll only get candies
this kind of gameplay for pokemons people are looking for why dont you just support or its devs cause they do have a potential and the game itself has a HUGE potential on market !!! this is just my opinion I SUPPORT THIS GAME
lol, they should've made a game like this, pokemon go isnt a bad idea, but most of pokemon players played this kind of game since gba.
this game is a lot better than pokemon go, you dont have to go outside just to catch pokemons, you can just sit back and rest while playing.
@kielmaika
nailed it!
@jmreplan Pokemon Sun and Moon isn't doing that for you?
People saying they can't see the similarites, the models are ripped right out of the Pokemon X/Y games. Perhaps they don't realize that the models are actually highly detailed since the 3DS screen isn't that great? Also, I downloaded it and it plays like crap. The game loads for everything and it is a long loading time. You get at least 5 loading periods during battle and they are all long loading times. I hope Nintendo and Gamefreak destroy this.
@Trikeboy XY, ORAS, SaM and Pokemon GO (possibly even more games?) all use the same exact models, actually.
@ninty-love Yes I know, my profile picture was made by me using the models ripped from the games.
As a big pokemon fan ive played pretty much all the pokemon games by nintendo so inevitably ive also found pokeland legends. Ive been playing it for a while now and im so nintendo but my recommendation is instead of trying to shut it down try buying it as pokeland legends is better then any legitimate pokemon game currently in circulation. Pokeland has been very well though out and well put together aside from sketchy translations and i personally think that theyve taken the best parts of the brand and simplified them and brought them all to one place something nintendo studios have failed to do thus far. Dont believe asks the other 1m+ players
Current name in the app store is monster manuel try it out fairly fun game
