Japan is getting its third and final retail collection of Sega 3D Classics this year, and Sega has been teasing the new games which will be included.
We recently discovered that Turbo Outrun is making the cut on Sega 3D Fukkoku Archives 3: Final Stage, but there were still three more unknown games to be confirmed.
We now know that one of those games is Technosoft's utterly superb Mega Drive / Genesis shooter Thunder Force III. Not only is it one of the best shooters on the system, it boasts an amazing soundtrack.
The pack - which arrives in Japan on December 22nd - also contains After Burner II, Super Hang-On, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Gunstar Heroes and Streets of Rage 2, all titles which are already available on the 3DS eShop.
Care to make any guesses on what other games we'll see, or if this collection will make it to the west? Post a comment below.

This collection really needs Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
second
Nice! Thunder Force III is a great choice.
What a brilliant collection of 3D Classics games in one pack:
After Burner II
Super Hang-On
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Gunstar Heroes
Streets of Rage 2
Turbo Outrun
Thunder Force III
. . .
I'm looking forward to finding out what the rest of the games are.
After seeing the image on the front page, it took me a moment to realise that it isn't an article about Moltres. Yeah, I'm still a bit tired and not with it yet.
On topic, those retro games look cool.
That's a great one, although I must admit that I prefer Thunderforce 4, possibly because of the spectacle, rather than the gameplay actually being better.
Still holding some hope that "Phantasy Star IV" makes it.
nintendo should really do this for their games as well. hell, do that for all old sprite games. castlevania, turrican, lords of thunder, gradius; bring them all back in 3d.
Woah. Technosoft games aren't lost? That means it's not impossible to get Herzog Zwei officially out somewhere. Thunder Force is fun too, but Herzog Zwei was right in the line of origins for real time strategy and moba arena games but still remains it's own thing.
That's two must haves! I'll be importing this for sure.
Revenge of Death Adder would send this collection through the roof.
I've gladly purchased everything put out over here under the 3D classics banner
@Jamotello Well Nintendo did start the 3D Classics line but it ended up being nothing more than drought filler for the first year of the 3DS lifespan.
I noticed that TGS actually referred to it as Sega 3D Classics Collection 2. Is a US (err, Western) release upon us too?
@Jamotello Well, Gradius is owned by Square Enix through Taito and they've done nothing with Taito except Space Invaders and Bubble Bobble since the acquisition...
@AlphaJaguar Gradius is a Konami game. But you're right Square Enix wasting Allll those Taito classics!! There's a good 60-70 of them. Thank goodness I have both collection discs on ps2 which can run on my PS3!!
Omg I would KILL😄 To have thunder force III on a current gen console!!!! Amazing game! Blew my mind on the Genesis!! And Gimme Turbo outrun too!!!!
wow. two wells. i didn't get a 'well, actually' tho'.
@AlphaJaguar I think you confused Gradius with Darius.
Gradius is a Konami game, Darius is Taito.
@Jamotello Nintendo stopped making their 3D Classics because they thought they could just add the 3D effect and sell the games. Turns out, adding the 3D effect actually effected the placement of enemies, characters, backgrounds, doors, etc and nothing worked the way it was supposed to. They ended up having to redo the games from scratch, just what M2 is doing, and once Nintendo finished releasing their 6 3D Classics, they stopped making more. There reasoning was something along the lines of: In the time it takes us to redo a classic and make it a 3D Classic, we could have made a brand new game instead.
Surely it won't include Sonic 3 or Sonic & Knuckles.
No way. Simply by virtue of us direly wanting it to happen.
What the news don't mention is that Sega somehow has managed to aquire all the rights of Technosoft IPs. That's awesome if you ask me, i always thought they were lost.
The collection already has Sonic 2, so I don't think they're going to add Sonic 3 and Knuckles to it. I think the choices are going to be the slightly more obscure ones, not ones that have been on a billion compilations....
I would love Contra Hard Corps, but it's Konami so it'll never happen.
@KingMike Thanks for pointing that mistake out, the similarities are probably due to the Shmup genre and similar naming conventions they both share. Shame that Konami got a worse fate than Taito considering the former has more mainstream appeal with gamers...
@joey302 I don't understand why Square Enix is limiting the talented Taito Corporation to the arcade industry of Japan. Square Enix could easily make good money off a Lufia, Psychic Force, Darius or Rastan Saga reboot. Heck, just re-release the Arcade Classics of Taito into one disc like Rare Replay and you've made good money and Taito relevant.
NintendoLife is still getting these details wrong. There are 4 new games total to this collection, not four more after the announcement of Turbo Outrun for a total of five.
So with this reveal, we now know 2 of the 4 new additions to this collection.

And as another poster said, this article also neglected to mention that they announced last night during their stream that revealed this, that Sega has bought the entire Technosoft library. Thunder Force is officially a Sega franchise now.
And please Sega, don't waste these two additional games on retreads of Genesis games that have been rereleased so many times through the years. I don't mind Thunder Force III since it hasn't been rehashed to death, but save this effort for arcade games like the previously released Thunder Blade or Revenge of Death Adder that don't already have arcade accurate home renditions.
AAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNND it's official: I NEED this.
@Knuckles outsource it to them, then. if struggling sega can afford it, i'm sure they can as well. if mario maker 3ds has 3d support, they can jsut have an enthusiastic intern do the mario games as 3d classics.
I really want 3D versions of Golden Axe & Golden Axe 2.
The name sounds like a very foul word in English. I'm shocked nobody has commented on that.
RISTAR PLZ IN CAPS LOCK!
Oooh... 3D Thunder Force III would be great. Let's hope this means that TFIV is on its way at some point too. Love those games.
@aaronsullivan Actually it appears that SEGA has recently bought all Technosoft assets. Or so it has supposedly been announced at this year's TGS.
@remlapgamer Nobody commented on it, because it doesn't sound anything like the word you are refering to. Japanese pronounciation is way different.
This volume sure beats the one out now in NA. Not only that it contain my 2 fave games in the 3D Classics lineup, but it also adds Turbo Out Run (Never played it but if it's a sequel, it's probably good) and a classic SHMUP along with it. Awesome!
Aside from a few games, I am not digging SHMUPs being made today. I also hate bullet hell.
Thunder Force III looks and sounds incredible. Never played it, so NoA, localize this, plox. Gunstar Heroes is also a selling point (Sonic 2 would be if I didn't already have it).
Awesome news! Clearly Bubsy and Shaq Fu are the most obvious titles to include.
But seriously, when Axel does his special in Streets of Rage 2, does anyone else hear him say "Rent a car!"?
@KeeperBvK Thanks for the tip. I wonder if it spawned today's article? Either way, I'm always glad to see Technosoft games get the spotlight once in awhile. ThunderForce games were fun for me, I used to love shmups, but Herzog Zwei was a big deal.
While I agree IV would have made for a more impressive debut, getting TF III is still amazing.
@Grumblevolcano
Yup, couldn't agree more.
I so need a multiplayer version of that on my 3DS.
SEGA, can you please, kindly take my money, I'll give it to you for a simple version of Sonic 3 & Knuckles that allows local play.
I just played a ton of Sonic 2 with my girlfriend. Now that was fun...but to be able to use Tails and be able to fly, and also have the ability to get 14 chaos emeralds and become Hyper and unlock a new final stage...oh yeah, and also be able to actually save the progress...come on SEGA.
We need this in our lives.
It's your best showcase of Sonic done right. It would be so timely now ahead of Sonic Mania.
Then please make Sonic Mania a continueation of that game too.
