Level-5 has confirmed the next title in the Professor Layton series, Lady Layton.
The game will be coming to 3DS and smartphones in 2017, and looks set to continue the puzzle-solving tradition of the original Layton outings.
The trailer above shows off a lot of animated content and a little of the smartphone game, which is looking quite basic at the moment.
Are you excited about continuing your adventures in the Layton universe, albeit with a new protagonist?

No NX release..?
To be released outside of Japan in 2018…?
It's a Layton game. It's story first and puzzles second. Of course they are going to focus on that. Personally I think it is the most ideal approach for a Layton debut trailer nowadays
Allready GOTY 2017 for me. Plan to get atleast three copies so I can play it on all my systems.
@sillygostly Actually based on their localization rates as long as it releases in Japan before May we'll see it in time for the holidays
"How can we make our already popular franchise even more popular?"
"Let's have a cute girl as the main character!"
Classic~
How is this coming on smartphones? Botched in a free game with buyable in-game puzzles? Or are they going to put a 40$ game on App Store? Or even worse, are they going to pretend 40$ for the 3DS version and 10$ for the iOS one, and then proceed to be pirated like a 2004 pokemon game on Android? This is stupid.
Level 5, do you want a Layton game on Mobile? Great, I do too. But a this point, take the Nintendo approach and just develop a new one that can survive in the mobile environment, and leave the real games to the real gaming machines.
I'm very excited to see this... now I just need to finish the Layton games haha
Can't wait for this!! The Layton series is one of my favourites! Level 5 games have so much charm I bet this will be a delight to play from beginning to end. Top hats off to them!
I think I heard in the trailer her name is Catlyn.. Catlyn Layton has a nice ring to it! I can feel the Layton charm from this, I'm looking forward to it!
i wonder how this new character is related to the old Layton
So who is Luke's replacement? The butler boy or the talking dog? Also it'd be so cool to be a voice actor :]
Will buy this day one, hopefully it will be a physical release
@hoshiZora Actually, according to the katakana text, her name should be Catriel? Layton. Still though, with the prof having a son and now a daughter, I wonder whom he hooked up with?
Would it kill them to make a proper Layron 7? I can't say I'm too interested in this.
@Mad_Haus Ah yeah, I couldn't quite keep up with the kana on my first view! I think Catriel is most likely, I hope it stays for the localised version!
Interested to see how they will release this on smartphones. Releasing it at as a full price game will be a disaster.
Great to see a new entry in this warm, toasty, sticky bun of a series. Sad it's not the mild mannered professor at the helm but Catriel should bring a new lease of life to things.
I can already picture fan-arts where Catriel Layton and her dog meet Tim Goodman and Detective Pikachu.
Being ported to mobile really? Let me guess it will cost 40$ for 3ds and 10 for mobile, although google/apple also rip 30% of the game revenues. I really don't understand gaming companies pricing policies. I was not very interest in this game, but now even less...
A true gentleman bows out when a lady takes the stage! I'm keeping tabs on this one, though I'm curious how it'll turn out.
This is a little out-of-the-blue, but why not. I'm fairly excited for this.
But the dog weirds me out.
@hepgius there is already a Layton game on iOS. Layton bros or something. That was alright but iap for the different chapters so turns out to be about 20 quid I think for the full unlock
I absolutely LOVE her design!
This trailer was better than I could've imagined. I'm definitely pre-ordering this ASAP. So excited!
Day one for sure! Love the Layton games but it'll certainly be refreshing to play as a female lead for a change, plus having a dog as a sidedekick too (which I love-reminds me of Fondue from Rhythm Thief).
@Mintendo Layton games have only ever come to dedicated handhelds - the DS and 3DS line - so they look to be continuing that. Even if NX is a hybrid handheld as rumored, the 3DS isn't dead and Level 5 has a lot of experience developing for it plus Layton games have come out for that so continuing that trend makes sense. Not sure why an NX release would be even remotely expected for a Layton game.
@TadpoleSHero
It is also possible, if unlikely, that the NX doesn't have a touch screen.
Great to see the Layton franchise coming back. However, you can bet we 3DS owners have to pay the full price, while smartphone-owners can download it for free (or at a very low price). Ah well, it can't be helped.
If they took a male protagonist and gender swapped just for the sake of it, then I'd be annoyed.
However, if they had an idea for a great game, but they didn't think Layton and Luke's personality would work, then I'm all up for a new lead character.
It's Level-5 we're talking about here, so I have high expectations that this game will be great quality.
Excellent. I was already sure the puzzle-solving craziness of the Layton games had come to an end, but it seems that isn't the case anymore. I'll miss Professor Layton, that's for sure (hint hint).
Wonder if fans will petition the dog to be voiced by Danny DeVito?
They had better localize this.
Anyway, I'm really looking forward to this. Wonder what the story with the talking dog is, though?
The dog speaks? Now that's just being silly.
I've never played a Professor Layton, but I've been interested in getting into the series sometime if I can find some of the games. I have played Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright and have enjoyed it so far.
I don't know a whole lot about the series, but Luke could speak to animals right? Is it possible that Catriel can also do so?
Wow! I can hardly believe the series is back! And there will be some great cameo opporitunities in this one. Can't wait!
I was sincerely hoping for Layton to come back strong, and this trailer makes me sure of this. So excited!
May check this out looks fun n cute.
Lady Layton's design: Dapper
Character's: Unique and full of personality
Music: Full of whimsy
Smartphones would probably have the better graphics but I'll get it on the 3DS. So much hype!
Woot! Another Layton game! I'll miss dear Hershel, but I don't mind a different protagonist stepping up.
So we're all going to ignore the talking dog?
I'm excited for a new Layton game and getting to meet a new protagonist. I think a parsed down mobile game could be fun, I'd solve some puzzles on break at work. I don't think it'd work though if it was the full game.
There was also a rabbit in Unwound Future that can talk due to science. #lore
I actually really like the look of the Lady Layton character. I think she could be very charming and interesting to learn the story of. I mean, I know Professor Layton himself can never be topped, but this could be a good alternative.
@hepgius given the screen shot at the bottem of the main site, (http://www.layton.jp/lady-layton/) it looks like a straight port with the 3DS having widescreen.
NX please! I want to see this in full HD
Professor Layton's daughter?!!!! I wonder who is the mother...
It's absolutely a Layton game and I'm really happy that Level 5 continued the series as it always being my favorite puzzle series. I wonder when it gonna come to Europe, maybe end of 2017 which is totally fine cos I still need time to play Pokémon Sun. XD
It looks very nice so far. Katrielle seems to step into the role surprisingly well (replacing the protagonist of any series is rarely a smooth operation), and the whole thing has as much Level-5 charm and polish as you would hope for.
With respect to the talking dog (and myna bird), it's not the first time characters have been able to communicate with animals in the series; it was one of Luke's tricks in the original games (and in fact, probably the only attribute that made him of any real use to Layton).
What we don't appear to know is whether it's really "a talking dog", speaking openly in human language, or whether Catriel can simply understand it, and it's actually speaking "dog language". Also, it's name is Sherlo. No prizes for getting the reference there.
You know I'm actually not too annoyed by this. Having seen shows like Doctor Who, Star Trek and Jojo's Bizzare Adventure (watch it BTW), switching protagonists can often bring a freshness to the series.
Hershell's been done quite a bit. Maybe this new formula of 'having different Layton family members' could work well.
@hoshiZora Well, aside from the last letter, that would be about how the Japanese pronunciation of Catlyn is spelled in Katakana. Given this is a series with Western names, that probably is the intended name and the localized one.
@Tops nah, i like this reboot angle, Level 5 screwed up with the Layton bros, I'm hoping for a 3ds release of that... I'm hoping its on NX too...
@Maxz its because the Layton game lost its identity with the spin off so when i saw this, i saw the magic i fell in love with so many moons ago.
I'm really digging this continuation of the Layton saga. At first I thought it was just a random character to replace the great Hershel Layton since his story was supposedly done. But, this being his daughter and her looking into his disappearance, makes me truly giddy inside. I hope we get some more backstory on who the mother was, and all that.
The only thing I want to complain about is that dog... I suppose he'll grow on me, but they could have done much better with Luke's replacement. I know there was a talking rabbit in the third game, but he was only present for a small section of the story. This dog on the other hand is practically tied to your hip the entire game.
@YouSeemFRAZZLED yeah i saw that AFTER i posted the question but thanks
also that means Layton has 2 kids then with his son in the Layton Brothers game
"But, this being his daughter and her looking into his disappearance, makes me truly giddy inside"
Is that really the case?! Then we might see a old Hershel, great news!
By the way: So many people are hating on the dog. I actually like him!
As upset as I was about the thought of a female Link, Layton's daughter (won't use any names because Kamui was changed to Corrin for the U.S. release of Fates) seems to be a well-developed character with a lot of spunk. Definitely getting it, but I wonder why even bother releasing it on mobile? What makes you think mobile gamers shudder can actually put enough time into a game like Layton in order to complete it? Their attention span is that of a fruit fly, and most of their time spent playing games is on the toilet or in otherwise boring circumstances. My average session time with both Layton games was 4 hours. What makes them think that mobile gamers have ever played a video game for 4 hours straight?
