Nintendo is bringing amiibo support to Animal Crossing: New Leaf almost four years after the game's original release in Japan.
The update - which is due in the Autumn - will allow users with a New 3DS or NFC Reader to use their amiibo figures and amiibo cards in the game. Cards will make villagers arrive in your town but it isn't currently known what scanning amiibo figures will do.
Nintendo has also confirmed that figures related to other Nintendo franchises can also be scanned, granting the player special costumes and furniture for use in-game.
The Japanese giant is currently working on an Animal Crossing mobile game which could potentially see some form of connectivity with New Leaf. Even if it doesn't, a timely update for the 3DS version will surely drive interest in the mobile release.

That'll give the game some extra legs. Now would you please fix Mario Kart 8's Battle Mode? That's only 2 years old.
Edit: There's also Splatoon content being added.
http://gonintendo.com/stories/261810-animal-crossing-new-leaf-new-amiibo-splatoon-update-coming-in
That's cool, got loads of the animal crossing amiibo on the cheap so may get some more use, whilst not iconic character's I'd argue they are some of the best designed amiibo.
Oh my gosh. That's astounding. I didn't think the Update button on the main manu would ever be used for anything. Bravo.
Neat.
This brings back hope of the Kalimari Desert pre-E3 tweet actually being meaningful (i.e. more MK8 DLC). If they're willing to update a nearly 4 year old game then an over 2 year old game isn't unrealistic.
I'm so excited now, maybe I can finally get back into it! I'm always scared to go back to Animal Crossing and have all the characters miss me, and see everything else I've missed. Hoping this goes well as with the mobile game. (Hoping for AC for NX 😍😍)
Totally predicted this!
maybe they should focus on an Animal Crossing game for Wii U (that isn't trash.)
Man, I was just robbing - I mean, helping to collect fruit.... in my town last night because of this stupid heat.
What ?! Really ?
I Want Rooney so BAD !!
Omg I knew this would happen! I have so many cards and figures I'm so ready for this.
I was waiting for a reason to buy New Leaf. I think Nintendo just gave me it!
Ugh, I needed more excuses to go buy the game a THIRD time...This time I'm not going to sell it when I get bored, It'll just go on the shelf until I want to play it again.
"Cards will make villagers arrive in your town", As in, visitors or potential move-ins? Because I have Lolly the cat in card form, and if having that means I have her as a guaranteed move in I will be happy. She's my favorite villager, I had her in my second and best town.
Grrrrrrrrrr.....
Now I'll HAVE to buy all of the cards and figurines................ damn it, Nintendo.
This is crazy, I was playing New Leaf earlier and thinking amiibo card support would be neat. Also was wondering why they never made use of that "Update data" feature on the menu.
That's the third coincidence I've had with them of late, including the Pokémon discount just after I thought about getting Yellow (though said discount never actually reached Australia...) and being offered a NES just before the reveal of the NES mini.
So my Link amiibo will probably give me another Hero's Tunic? I guess it makes some sense, like how amiibo just give Kirby an ability relating to the scanned character in Planet Robobot.
If the gold Villager statue is added, I may finally get the amiibo.
Also, this seems like how the first Animal Crossing was upgraded when localized to western territories to be on the GameCube and include e-Reader support, and then Japan upgraded the game in their country to follow suit.
This. Is. Amazing! 😍
I wonder what the Villager Amiibo will do? Watch the value of those cards skyrocket now✨ 🚀🌝
I just recently thought: "wouldn't it be cool if Nintendo added amiibo support for Animal Crossing". My wish was granted... Now, to get back some AC cards I gave to my fiance's daughter (believe me, she is not using them).
I just wonder, how about Special Character Amiibo Card such as K.K. Slider, Digby ( I got this from HHD), Isabelle, Lyle, Katrina, etc ?
Does it unlock something special if i have got those characters ?
Oh, btw. With Amiibo card support, i give this 8.9 from 10. Almost 9 from 10 from me.
Yes, I can finally use my Stitches amiibo card to get him to move into my town!
I haven't seen him since the Wii version
Super excited for this!
Oh, i want to add something. With Amiibo card support, no more Villager Reset Tricks ( Because we CAN decide who's stay, who's must move out by our desire ) so it will save your time a lot to get your Dreamy villagers. Thanks goodness. I can get my most wanted villager, Rooney easily.
Wow. I am still in disbelief. They did not totally forget about this game! Now I'll have to hunt down amiibo cards.
Holy crap I was so sure they'd never do it. As a devoted player since release I'm glad to see Nintendo still care after all. My only regret is that I can no longer say "this game has never been updated" when people insist that new lines have been added since release. Splatoon did not invent the phrase "turf war", guys!
Nice!
@Captain_Gonru I'm kind of shocked they did this now for a 4 year old game, why not just wait a year and get people to double dip by putting this out on the NX Away next in the Autumn? (I keep reading that like Starfire) It could still be an NX Away port, but there would be less incentive to buy it for the millions of people who already own it on 3DS.
What's a Wii U?
WHY DID THEY NOT DO THIS LAST YEAR SO PEOPLE WOULD WANT TO BUY THE OVERSTOCKED AC AMIIBO? AND WHY NOT DO THIS TO OTHER GAMES (Super Mario 3D World, Pikmin 3, etc.) AS WELL?!
I'm not getting too excited because it doesn't specifically mention that the characters can actually move in. Going by the info, it looks like they just visit. However, the picture of the villager with the moving boxes gives a little hope. I hope there is a way to get them to stay and wouldn't it be great if they brought their house from HHD? Some potential, but I'm waiting on the finer details.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE i find it odd that Nintendo decide to make them Squirrels and not octopus,
That gives me a reason to return to my town, but I'm not looking forward to it. Isabelle is going to be angry that I deserted my mayoral duties, Penelope might have left town and there's going to be weeds everywhere.
I'm all over this.
@Sakura
If the update also allow us to redesign the villager's house with HHD features, it would be VERY GREAT. And i anticipated for New villagers that introduced on HHD or Revival villagers on HHD like Carrie. What will happen if we scan Carrie Amiibo card on ACNL with new update ?
Also, maybe there are possibilities about new venues like Hotel, Restaurant, Supermarket (Not owned by Timmy Tommy), Concert Hall, etc. Who knows ? But it would Awesome.
That's great! VERY excited to hear this. I still have 60% original towns folk from release day. Bunnie..midge..ozzie..dizzy etc.
@Crimzonlogic I have sweet Lolly in my town...she sends her love to you 😊
When I read the titular elsewhere I was hoping for something great, but it is what it is: amiibo and card support. I could not care less. Let's be honest, Nintendo. Instead of developing (or updating) Animal Crossing you pick up an old one and you just add an update JUST TO sell cards and amiibos, because Amiibo Festival did not work like you expected. Basically, you want to sell more cards and amiibo using decent software that was released four years ago. You never stop surprising me, Nintendo. Why don't you fix Mario Kart 8's battle mode which is far more requested?
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Battle Mode does not give them money, I guess.
Wow. After three years and Nintendo updates a game released that year. I'd like to see what kind of support the amiibo feature will have
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Agreed, plus more Mario Party 10 and Mario Kart 7 content, Smash 3DS and Wii U costumes (really wanted a School Uniform costume for Miis ....), and plenty more Super Mario Maker content.
Well this was a nice surprise! Honestly wasn't expecting that, since the game is 4 years old now. Nevertheless, I now need to get the cards. Also, could we maybe see this done with other older games? Please?
Wondering if I should start my town again. There isn't really anything else to do except make my house bigger.
@StephenYap3
Nintendo must fixed Mario Kart 7 Versus Mode with new update. Allowed us to play that Mode alone, without requiring Download Play from another 3DS.
I got a few cards lying around from Happy Home Designer and participating in a contest so this is nice.
@lighteningbolt79
Nooo.... Don't destroy your town ! Too precious to be deleted.
Unless if your town filled with bunches of Ugly villagers...
@Anti-Matter Exactly. I mean, they rushed the game out for Holiday release and later on gave it an update to fix that Maka Wuhu glitch (only online ...). So, why not go all the way and finish the job?
@Grumblevolcano
Perhaps this has been said before but it is interesting that the Kalimari Desert (Callie+Marie Desert) was shown. There may yet be a Mario Kart/Splatoon third DLC coming out to honor the end of Splatfest and make MK8 interesting again. I'd be interested. Again, before I am labeled as a idea thief I did state that this may have been said be someone else before but I am completely unaware if such an event has taken place.
@LegendOfPokemon Well you know, Nintendo had games coming out last year. Both the 3DS and Wii U fronts are rather weak for the fall. For example Wii U has 1 game between June 24th and BotW so meaningful updates and DLC for past Wii U games late this year (e.g. MK8, HW, Pokken, SMM) would make most sense.
@Zach777 There was a big debate on the tweet back in June.
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2016/06/rumour_nintendo_uk_hints_at_more_mario_kart_8_dlc
I still play ACNL daily. Sure i'm one of the few that do.
@Anti-Matter I'm keeping excitement contained for now. I wonder how extensive the update is. Is it possible to update a game so much when it is already finished? Perhaps, if it is possible to use assets that are already developed for other games and can be incorporated as additions, rather than messing with the core game - villagers' houses in HHD can already be imported to amiibo Festival and characters already have some furniture when they move in New Leaf so to replace that data with that from a card or figure might actually be possible, although that's a complete guess and I have no idea how it could work in practice. I'm guessing owning HHD would be necessary, more linking the games than integrating them.
I do feel that they would have announced that now if such linking were their intention, although Nintendo is always making ambiguous statements with various levels of defying logic, so anything's possible.
That's a great surprise!
I've been been putting off going back to my ACNL village for months because I don't think I could face all my villagers having moved away. Now this update solves the problem of lost villagers and gives me a reason to stay invested for a little while longer. Thanks Nintendo!
I gave up with this game ages ago!
@Sakura It looks like cards visit and figures probably move in.
@the-madprofessor So the update is more of a tease, then? It does make sense that it's fairly small-scale. Perhaps in the future...
Well I wasn't going to collect the animal crossing amiibo. Thanks a lot, Nintendo.
@the-madprofessor there are only figures of special characters such as Isabelle, Lottie, Digby etc so how would that work? The figures will probably unlock different outfits for the NPCs or something minor Whereas the cards will likely let villagers visit and then possibly move in similar to the camping site function.
@Captain_Gonru I like the compilation idea, but as I get worn down replying to all the negative emails, like 2 dozen the past 2 hours, all I can think is that it's not going to happen. OK, I'll try and muster some enthusiasm, I've always thought HHD and NL go together, so it makes sense, and it could happen. And aF always did look like a pack of side quest mini-games. hmm, maybe...
This is definitely going to make everyone that's lost their favorite villager happy. Just have an open slot in town and have them visit. Repeat until they offer to move in!
I hope with this new update that there may be new public works projects added. Also, maybe the ability to move around your villagers houses if they moved in a bad spot.
@bezerker99 I've played it daily for years now and even restarted after my original save file corrupted.
@Captain_Gonru OK, last 1, then I'm going to take a shower and go out for my big birthday dinner, I've been replying for like 3 hours straight.
I like how this platform thing could all come together. Save points from 1 gen to the next I think are a boon, even if you have to buy the game again. And w/ AC on mobile, well that works.
Can you imagine if Go somehow ties into S&M? I hope Nintendo gets NX right, whatever it is. And they explain it right w/ words people can understand. And price it right, based on what it is.
But most of all, I really hope they tell us soon, I can't take too many more days like this, my whole body is killing me.
Oh nice
@Captain_Gonru
How about this ? Make it full 360 degree camera angle like Final Fantasy XII, villagers maximum until 30, Tons of challenging mini games, Hotel like MySims Wii (So, we can encounter random villagers up to 5), New place areas (Such as Desert, Futuristic City ala F-ZERO, Wild Forest, Volcano, Tropical Forest, etc), Rideable vehicles, Growing Crops (Like Story of Seasons), Cooking (And the dish or drinks can be eaten or for gift or can be sold for money) .
Hm... when i looked at the screenshots, there was a new NPC Yutarou asked player about Amiibo support. So, my speculation there will be a lot ot new things implemented including the NPC and villagers.
I got USA version screenshots of new update.

Is it known how the amiibo feature will deal with the cycling logic of the game? For example: let's say a villager leaves the town and you scan his amiibo card. Will he move in right away or do you still have to cycle through villagers until he's able to move in again?
I have the US version of the update.
How you would use amiibo in Animal Crossing: New Leaf on New Nintendo 3DS systems.
And how you use amiibo for Animal Crossing: New Leaf if you don't have a New Nintendo 3DS or New Nintendo 3DS XL system.
I really, really hope that this update isn't forced. My 3DS has an older firmware that I try to avoid updating and the last thing I want is to try to launch New Leaf and be greeted with 'a system update is required to play'. Would Nintendo do that?
@YouSeemFRAZZLED I never said not to have one for NX
