If you followed E3 closely you'll have seen a lot of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, with the Treehouse team providing a combined 8 hours+ of demonstrations. Yet there's always more to see, as the latest Nintendo Minute proves.
The usual presenting duo of Kit and Krysta are joined by series producer Eiji Aonuma, with Reiko Ninomiya interpreting. We get a bit of insight into the towers seen in the demo along with some looks at a couple of areas not seen a great deal during the Treehouse demos. Aonuma-san also howls at one point - it's not quite as amazing as the great Cucco dance of 2014, but it's awesome nevertheless.
Check it out below.
Enough videos, bring on the game already! March 2017 seems so far away......😰
@Spoony_Tech I feel you, I haven't been this excited for a game since Majora's Mask. Can't wait to get my hands on Breath of The Wild.
Can you please have an article discussing the apparent removal of the Game pad map that was shown by Anouma and Miyamoto in December 2014 but doesn't seem to be in the game any longer. @ThomasBW84 I really don't see how you can ignore it, it's gotten some fairly wide coverage elsewhere, you can Google it, or read all links in my previous comments, I need to purge, I feel like Paul Revere - "The NX is coming, the NX is coming, and it is ruining my Wii U game."
I was going for a Zelda U Link on Epona look.
Well there's obviously something on the gamepad...
Not a chance am I watching an episode of Nintendo Minute. Those 2 presenters are pure cringe.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I agree. Aonuma is an entertaining personality but Kit and Krysta... no thank you.
@starcatcher77 According to everything I've been able to read the only thing the Game pad Edit: "screen" is used for in the game is nothing. At E3 it showed an instruction page for what the buttons did - A jump, R arrow, B attack, stuff like that. Anouma said he didn't want a 2nd screen distracting people from the TV screen. I'm still hoping things were lost in translation and he was only talking about the E3 demo where he wanted people focused, I'm really just exasperated and want some solid confirmation. But as with most things Nintendo, we're left to try and figure things out for ourselves.
@rjejr Your posts are so exhausting. Can't you just appreciate things at face value without critiquing and analyzing every detail? Log off and get some fresh air. We will be fine without you for a while. I promise.
After seeing some of the amazing things you can do in this game the wait is going to be simply unbearable but I guess that is the hallmark of being genuinely excited for an upcoming game, and that hasn't happened to me in a long time. Zelda games always manage to pull it off though and this one looks like the largest departure from the series' conventions yet and I am all the more excited for it!
@rjejr Good. I'm tired of gimmicks and having to look at two screens. It's annoying and ruins immersion.
@BlatantlyHeroic Being able to run and change the inventory items at the same time (like in Twilight Princess HD) does not break the immersion. Being forced to stop the game to change the inventory item breaks the immersion.
@rjejr has a a point. It seems clear that Nintendo removes good features just so the NX version will not appear less functional in any area.
...And I think Kit and Krysta is quite ok to watch nowadays.
Looks amazing but the ONE thing that scares me is they keep mentioning how Link is "all alone" and one of my favourite parts of LOZ is the quirky characters! Hopefully they are still included even if they are spread out across the world.
Also this is the first time I actually wanted to purchase an amiibo.
@rjejr - I'm disappointed by the lack of gamepad features.....map at least would be nice and it works well in many games like this. It jind of feels like this is now a port of the NX version. Everyone will be happy with the standard pro controller though with a mini touchscreen like PS4's.
The closed captioning for the Japanese portions is hilarious though. I dont know why it comes up in every you tube video now....and I don't care cause the mistakes it makes is worth reading the videos
@rjejr do you really like the map function on the gamepad? I do like the inventory displayed on the gamepad in WWHD en TPHD, but i always use the map in the tv menu.
This game looks awesome! But I won't buy the NX because of it. This game was meant to be played on the Wii U, and I won't buy the newer version just because the frame rate is better.
@NickOfTime90 I can't imagine playing WW HD or XCX w/o the Gamepad map. Sure, its doable w/o it, but playing Tomb Raider reboot now I am constantly looking into my lap for the map, I use the map constnalty in TR looking for tombs to raid adn GPS caches. SO MUCH BETTER w/ the Gampepad screen map.
@BlatantlyHeroic You left off the at the end.
@jariw Oh man, I should have just come to you from the start w/ my Gamepad screen map question, you were my oracle font of knowledge for some game in the past, Splatoon maybe? (I still think you have inside knowledge somehow.)
So, do you think it's really removed, or just for E3, or has my conspiracy paranoia finally overwhelmed me?
@Gerbwmu I'm sure they are counting on enough people being happy w/ the Pro controller support that people don't notice the lack of map, even though they just spent 2 full months promoting it on TP HD.
Honestly, I think I'm more annoyed that they showed it 18 months ago - Miyamoto was a happy child pressing those + and - buttons - and now it disappeared, maybe, and that GPS comment was just ridiculous coming from the man who championed it's inclusion in WW HD and TP HD. I'm sure the game will work fine, just like every open world game on PS and Xbox hardware ever - but man, it was there, they took it out, and gave us a lame excuse, and I can't even be 100% positive I have any idea what I'm talking about. That's what I'm really annoyed about, that "maybe" it was removed. I can already envision myself annoyed playing this every time I need to bring up the map on the tv and changing items on the TV rather than on the Gamepad screen.
The sooner Nintendo clears the air the sooner I can move on.
@rjejr i understand what you are saying, i would like to know if the choice is ours as well...
@rjejr - my favorite part about the GPS comment and all the agrees with it.....you know most of the people agreeing use their phone as a GPS and throw it in their lap or in the cup holder while they drive.
@rjejr But there is a map? It was shown during the Treehouse, I believe. I think the idea is the same as with Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD, with the GamePad you can have a map, otherwise you can play with the Pro Controller and access the map more traditionally.
So, yeah, I'm not sure what the problem is?
@Jimmy_G_Buckets That's why I self imposed a ban on Pushsquare so I could relax. This is me relaxing.
@rjejr From our preview, showing I didn't imagine it in the Treehouse
"The biggest use of this device in the demo was to serve as a Xenoblade Chronicles X-style interactive map, which, like the land it charts, scales beautifully. When we zoomed out fully on the suggestion of our Nintendo rep, we got an almost overwhelming sense of the vastness of the explorable world, but even better, when we zoomed in, we were treated to a topo-map display that showed distances and depths in lovingly-lined detail. The cartography is customizable as well; you can set 'stamps' anywhere on the map — using either the top-down plan or a first-person scope — and choose from a variety of symbols and colours to represent whatever you'd like to remember."
@ThomasBW84 no, they said the gamepad was mostly turned off for the demo, only to display the controls. I thought Aonuma talked about the gamepad map being distracting in hindsight.
@NickOfTime90 Well, Morgan wasn't making it up. There were multiple demos, him and the guys (as I understand it) had a slot in the 'VIP' bit you saw in the Nintendo Minute segments.
Dunno what to tell you, but there is a map, it's described right there in our original preview.
@ThomasBW84 Alright! I only saw the treehouse streams. It's not that i didn't believe you, i just couldn't find any confirmation on it, thanks:)
@ThomasBW84 - good news then......hopefully it is just some confusion in some of the other articles.....Nintendo didnt really talk about it either.
@rjejr - we can all relax now and drink a beer knowing that the map should still be there
@Gerbwmu I was only baffled because I distinctly remember Treehouse showing it too, albeit briefly, but then I was watching the whole thing as I was working the live blog. I find it frustrating that some sites (evidently ones I don't visit often as this is the first I've heard of it) have clearly been reporting misinformation as fact.
@ThomasBW84 Go ask Mitch Vogel I think he is one of your fellow NL guys. He even edited his article to take out the part about the map being on the Gamepad.
It's only the first 7 comments and then #16 so there isn't a lot to read.
Here's what the rest of the internet is saying:
That's 4 articles all saying it isn't there. I won't bother w/ the Gamefaqs comments and others, but it seems to be out there, no map.
And I don't like linking to your competitors and giving them exposure here, but they did at least cover this news 4 days ago on Wednesday.
If all of those places are wrong, I'd really love so proof. I know you weren't at E3, but you know people who were. And weren't there 500 people at Ntineod NY, surely 1 or 2 of them must have reported somewhere on the internet about it?
You seem so sure of yourself but after all of this I kind of need proof.
@rjejr I can ask Morgan but, as I say, he described it very clearly in his preview - https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2016/06/hands_on_wide-open_wanderlust_in_the_legend_of_zelda_breath_of_the_wild
I wonder whether the issue was the GamePad utilised in different ways for the two demos (one had the intro and I believe was longer, one was shorter and all about exploring the world). Maybe in one case the GamePad was just showing controls to 'help' attendees.
So I suspect that's the source of confusion. But as proof I offer you Morgan's words and the fact, again, I remember Treehouse showing it!
Edit: I wouldn't 'report' it after reading a preview by our own guy describing it in detail, there's no deliberate ignorance of it.
@rjejr I concur...especially with all these Aonuma interviews saying how the gamepad is a distraction to the player and alot of the demo videos showing the player using the tv screen to look at the map and menu options
@ThomasBW84 Thank you for clearing it up....that was honestly the most disappointing thing I heard...Nintendo abandoning the gamepad
Another possibility is that you view the map in detail (with all the stuff Morgan displays) when the game is paused? Now THAT might be the case, I can ask him. Or it's optional, like Wind Waker HD / Twilight Princess HD. I can ask him anyway.
So freakin hyped for this game, got me as hyped as Smash Wii u and mk8
This game is going to be freakin sweet
@ThomasBW84 Well it should be there yes, but the confusion is still out there, almost everywhere. It does look like the Treehouse had the map but not the floor models, so probably a lot of people playing the floor models were commenting on social media which obviously would bring up confusion. 500 people played the game in Nintendo NY but Google can't find a single comment.
And while Anouma's comments may have been taken out of context or lost in translation, Anouma still made them. Why say this unless he was taking it out:
“Previously, when I was playing with Mr. Miyamoto, you might have seen that the map was on the GamePad screen,” “But after developing the game and playing the game we realized that having a smaller version of the map on screen is actually better so you know where you are at all times. So we decided to take it that route."
Thats what he said. Doesn't it SOUND like he took it out? He says we used to have it but decided it didn't work. If all they did was add a small map to the TV screen why not simply say - "The Gamepad is great, but we added a small map on the TV to help players out."
So this may very well all be a big misunderstanding, but between the show floor demos and his own words Anouma's responsible for the confusion.
Good news, I'll be on vacation for a week soon so no comments from me for awhile then. I'll be mysterious like Ntineod and not say when though.
I found some Nintnedo NY footage, at the 47:03 mark you can see the Gamepad screen and I believe it's a picture of the Gamepad, maybe used to switch to off TV play? Sorry I don't have more. Even more sorry to ruin your Saturday.
@ThomasBW84 Just read Morgan's overview, he definitely used the map, that's for sure. At the time I was fixated on the wolf Link amiibo and Nintnedo saying you need to play TP HD first (see the official Nintedo video on the eShop), also since refuted. I think you could be on to something though, maybe the map ONLY shows on the Gamepad screen while it's showing on the TV, or paused on the TV, so as not to be "a distraction" as Aouma said?
One thing I hate more than bad facts is not knowing, and I've done enough of that for the past 14 months w/ NX. Nintnedo must know this is out there - even if you didn't - can't somebody make a simple tweet "Yes, Zelda BotW uses the map on the Gamepad screen, it was disabled for E3." Simple.
@rjejr Enjoy your vacation Sir!
@rjejr I've chatted to Morgan, and here's what I get from it, and it seems to be what you've said in your last comment. He remembers looking at the map on the GamePad instinctively, but he now thinks it was when he hit minus (Select) or something along those lines. I just looked through the Treehouse stream again for the map bits, and it seems to be in menus.
So what I think is happening here is that the map is on the GamePad, but is also on the TV, they seem to pause the game when they view it (I thought at the time they were showing a GamePad feed, but maybe it wasn't!). What seems to have happened is that Morgan instinctively looked down. What also seems to be the case (with Morgan and Mitch apparently figuring it out over lengthy conversations ) is that the VIP room build did mirror the map on the GamePad while also on the TV, but the builds on the main booth area just showed a cheat sheet of buttons on the controller all the time. The upstairs area had printed cheatsheets, so maybe they were tweaked builds.
Basically, Morgan remembers looking at a map on the GamePad, but it doesn't seem to be real time, it seems to be a pause thing.
So there you go, I THINK that's what's going on here. So yeah, perhaps a real-time map has bitten the dust. I'd agree that's a shame, maybe the idea is that the minimap (which also shows directions for beacons) combines with the fact you use the map in a pause state. The GamePad seems to reflect the 'Sheikah Slate' I guess, and maybe the game frames it as when Link 'looks' at his Slate you see the map.
But yeah, it seems a map has come out of the game as a dedicated real-time thing. I shall eat humble pie. I'll look around (including the links you posted) to try and get 100% clarity.
Confusing, and amazing that a thing like a map can be a talking point!
@rjejr what?! vacation?! but but who else will entertain me with such astute optimistic observations of my favorite company while also admitting that DKCTF is a masterpiece 2D platformer while Jak and Daxter await their triumphant return
Enjoy ur time off my friend I will miss you like the Animaniacs missed Pip...ima leave a link so u could check out the episode "Chairman of the bored" i think you will appreciate my last comment more after you watch it
I had the close captions turned on, and it tried to read Aonuma's Japanese as English words; it was hilarious! The funniest part though was at the end.
Instead of saying "click here for more", the captions said "click here for porn". I was dying.
@ThomasBW84 Thank you for all of that investigative reporting TW, sorry to drag you into my paranoid delusions (ever read "Sandman"? Gaiman is great) and especially on the Saturday after E3 where you should be soaking in a hot tub somewhere having unpaid Treehouse interns feed you grapes. And of course a pint.
I'm going to take a few hours off the internet now to let everybody a break from my commenting.
@WanderingPB @MJKOP Well I'm not gone yet, you have to wait, it will be surprise. One day you'll come onto NL and there will be less madness. (that's a pun on my avatar BTW). But not yet.
@Jimmy_G_Buckets Be a bit nicer.
@ThomasBW84 Lol, there should be a "Talking Point" on it.
If only Google Maps was as good as this!
@Spoony_Tech Just don't get your hopes up, Zelda currently has a 2017 release date. I too also think it will launch along side the NX, but I wouldn't be surprised if it comes out in May (for example), or even for the Holiday season.
It doesn't break immersion it enhances it.
@jariw You said that, but even if the Wii U version put the map on the 2nd screen like we saw at the game awards, the NX version is going to be the superior version. Really watch the Zelda Wii U footage. The textures/details once past a certain point are super blurry and the amount of sudden pop in is crazy. As long as the NX is more powerful than the Wii U, it will fix all these things. Trees, rocks, landscapes, etc, popping in really takes you out of the immersion of the game. Heck if you watch the footage closely you can even see a LINE where the textures/details in the distance become blurry (and it's not even far ahead of Link himself).
Don't get me wrong, this game is beautiful, but it's going to be more beautiful on the NX. The NX version is going to be the definitive version (with or without Wii U gamepad extras).
@TsukiDeity: Since a friend mentioned that, I rewatched several videos but I couldn't spot a single instance of objects popping in? Can you maybe point me to an example?
This was somewhat annoying in XCX, but Breath of the Wild seems to have solved this.
Also, how do you know the NX will be more powerful? Nintendo said the experience will be the same on NX and they repeatedly stated that NX won't be the Wii U's successor. We still don't even know what NX is exactly...
@rjejr Their likely still is a gamepad map, as you can see when they set waypoints theirs gotta be a map on the gamepad screen
You can see it in most videos, but it's most apparent when you are gliding around. You can't not notice it.
I noticed the pop in myself but didn't notice the detail blur.
If you watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pg6hnrC_vgU
You'll certainly see it. the guy talks about it too. The pop in stuff starts at about the 4:00 mark. The pop-in in XCX is better in my opinion. XCX has more of a fade in style of pop in, Zelda has literal pop in.
I don't know the NX will be more powerful, I'm just making a calculated opinion. Nintendo has never release a new system on par or weaker than the preview generation. Even the Wii was more powerful than the GCN. If the NX is again the same style as GCN to Wii, that would make the NX two WiiU "duct tape" together, would still result in the NX version of Zelda being the superior version.
The Xbox One Slim will be priced as the same as the Wii U yet it's way more powerful. Nintendo can easily may their onw new system with Xbox One spec and price it for 300$.
Again we know nothing about the NX, but how likely will the NX be on par with the Wii U?
I know they said the NX won't replace the Wii U OR 3DS (but this statement is still true if the NX replaces BOTH the Wii U AND 3DS (words can change everything haha)).
If the only change between the two versions, is lighting, textures, etc, it means it's still the same experience, but one is prettier.
If your interested in that line where the detail goes blurry it's at the 5:26 mark of the video.
3DS is too early to be replaced. Who can't insist for lovely colors and limited edition bundles ?
Wii U now just only Black color, less appeals for colorful lovers, struggling with its future, better replaced by NX for goods.
If NX released, give us at least 5 basic colors : White, Black, Metallic Silver, Red and Indigo blue. If NX sold well, at least give more color options like 3DS done.
Now I really want a wolf link amiibo.
Smosh did a "shocking" interview with Reggie and he mentioned that the E3 gamepad controllers was just a demo build so that most people could understand the games controls at E3 and are not the final controls...so maybe the Wii U gamepad functionality still has hope for BoTW...to be honest WWHD or XCX gamepad functionality will make me very happy
Quicksand? Horse mounts not being Epona?
Neverending Story anyone?
@WanderingPB The game still has at least 6 months until release, probably 9, maybe more, so lots do be done still. My hope w/ my crusade last wekk that if enough peopel knew, maybe, just maybe, we coudl incluence Ntineod topu tth real time map back in, if indeed they did take it out. And there is really no reason to think they didn't take it out, b/c th epaused map seemed to work fine in th eVIP room. And veverything NAoum asiad. And NXprobably not haivng a controller w/ a screen. So while I'm glad there is a map on th eGamepad scren when th egam ei spasued, I Really like it real time in both W WHD and XCX, and I will miss it in Zelda BotW i fit doens't come back. Which I don't think it will.
Until NX. Then they'll tell us if we buy the 4DS / NX handheld, we can use that $200 device as a controller, and if we pay $1.99 we can purchase an app that works as a real time map on that 2nd screen. Then the NX version will be better than the Wii U version, at which point they'll tell us Wii U wasn't powerful enough to run the game and real time map at the same time (that excuse is almost certainly coming at some point), so NX is a more powerful console, even if it needs a handheld to be more powerful.
@patbacknitro18 Well there is still a map on Gamepad screen - when you pause the game and the map is on the TV. The difference being if you've played WW HD or XCX - and maybe TP HD, I played the original - the map was in real time. You could sail, drive or fly around those games while watching where you were going on the Gamepad screen. And when Anouma showed Zelda U you back in Dec 2014, when he basically guaranteed it would be out in 2015 - not 2016 or 2017 - the map was real time in Zelda U as well. So they didn't take the "pause" map off, only the real time map. But having spent over 160 hours playing XCX, I can tell you that real time map came in very handy. Especially in the flying skell. And I would have never hunted down those octo in WW HD w/o the real time map.
@Jimmy_G_Buckets THANK YOU! Someone finally told him, I really had it up to here, with his condescending replies, and his quite frankly rude behaviour, so cheers for that.
@ThomasBW84 "I find it frustrating that some sites (evidently ones I don't visit often as this is the first I've heard of it) have clearly been reporting misinformation as fact."
So, as it turns out, the only site reporting misinformation was yours. I took so much abuse last June in this thread and others from people about the map, people telling me I was crazy and imagining things. You did finally come around after days of debate and "eat humble pie" - it's up there somewhere - but now that there is no map, people are still giving me grief about it. Crazy.
@Gerbwmu "we can all relax now and drink a beer knowing that the map should still be there"
So no, not so much. At least I didn't spend 3 days railing over nothing, I was pretty much the only one who saw this coming. Well maybe for $20 this summer they'll give us our map back.
@rjejr - I've come to realize the fact that I'm the small percentage of fans that loved the gamepad and it's version of duel screen gaming...........so I will play my switch version of Zelda and pour a little of my 40oz on the ground in remembrance of the lost map. Sad thing is....if the map was there.....I would have bought the Wii U version which is probably why it's gone and I should be mad at Nintendo.....but they keep making amazing stuff for me so forgive and forget I guess.
Cheers to us though......enjoy a beer my friend!
@Gerbwmu If I had a 40 I'd drink it, all that's left in the fridge is alcoholic cherry cola, which seemed like a good idea at the time but turned out not so much. Root beer and cream were good, which is why they're real gone.
Enjoy your Switch and Zelda, seems like it's all turned out pretty well for Switchmas. I'm still waiting, it's what I do.
