Time can be a great healer. Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric wasn't a golden moment for the mascot, but the Boom universe continues to roll on with the animated series and the upcoming Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice on 3DS. Considering all that went wrong with the Wii U exclusive, it's a series that's done well to survive.
The troubles of the Wii U title and its developer Big Red Button have been well documented, though if you want a catch-up the latest video from Did You Know Gaming should do the trick. It focuses mainly on Rise of Lyric, and gives a reminder of some of the crazy Sonic and friends designs that didn't make the cut. A couple of the factoids are new to this writer, too, such as some funny audio clips that went unused.
In any case check it out - with guest host JonTron - below.

I downloaded the demo of Rise of Lyric last year. Nope, not for me...
Wish Sega could go back to glory days...
@Hamster_Overlord It's better than the demo.
@liveswired I may still get it used for cheap later...
Regardless of what people say and the development turmoil, Sonic Boom Rise of Lyric is a good, solid game.
Shadow The Edghog aside, hearing Sonic characters curse or almost curse is so surreal.
@liveswired It's really not
@ThomasBW84 You guys should update the F&I page to show the Sept 27 and 30th release date (US and EU).
https://www.nintendolife.com/games/3ds/sonic_boom_fire_and_ice
Here's the article w/ the dates.

@Grumblevolcano - Look another 3DS game sort of for the holidays. Looks like a kids game to me since it has a matching cartoon.
@Detective_TeeJay Have you actually taken the time to play it? No. It's a definite 7/10 in my book.
@liveswired Heck no. I saw a complete playthrough and that was enough. The combat is boring and repetitive, the framerate is crap, the entire game glitches randomly for no reason, and the characters never shut up. Ever.
Also! There's no danger. Rings rain from the heavens but cap out at 100 for no reason, and you only lose a few when you get hurt which you get back near instantly.
Not to mention, everyone has been reduced to generic chracter stereotypes. You got the main character, the smart one, the dumb one, and the token girl. To be fair they were always like this but they're exaggerated to oblivion here.
Knuckles is a complete moron. His dialogue makes me want to rip my ears off more than everyone else already does, and that's saying something.
Your book needs some serious revising.
Obvious glitches aside, I managed to enjoy this game quite a bit. Had a lot of fun playing through it. I really liked having Tails, Amy, and Knuckles playable again, and I also liked all the conversations between the characters. Not the best game ever, but not the worst either, in my unpopular opinion.
Besides Lyric, I'm glad that the show and other parts of Sonic Boom are still going quite strong. I found Shattered Crystal to be fun as well, and I'm also looking forward to Fire & Ice.
Personally, I want a sequel to Sonic Generations. In my opinion, it's the best Sonic game in the past decade, and I would love to have a follow-up made for it.
I thought the TV show was... decent. Like 6/10 decent. The characters are flanderized versions of their original counterparts, but Eggman was still himself and sometimes stole the spotlight. There were very well thought out episode scenarios but a good chunk of them had rushed pacing and terrible writing.
Now for Rise of Lyric... I'm really glad I stepped aside when I've seen video of the E3 2014 demo. The 3DS game looked okay but still wasn't my cup of tea. I might try Fire and Ice, but mostly because I want to support the idea of delaying future sonic games so they won't end up being rushed... like Rise of Lyric.
@LegendOfPokemon Sonic Generations isn't the only good recent Sonic game, there's also Sonic Colors.
@liveswired how exactly is it a "GOOD" or a "SOLID" game? Seriously, tell us what you liked so much about this brown butt juice of a game. It's got terrible level design, terrible, boring button mashing fighting, ugly graphics that would have looked dated on the GameCube and it's buggier than every Assassins Creed game combined and don't even get me started on the voice "acting"...
It's not good or solid. It's bad and flaccid.
And yes, I have played it. So don't try that one on me.
Seems every Sonic game has its share of fans, no matter how terrible it could be. In all honesty i'd rather play this over Sonic '06...
@Hamster_Overlord
"Wish Sega could go back to glory days"
Well, after hearing the president's statements about making quality games or not making games at all, and seeing Valkyria Chronicles Remastered paving the way for the newest entry, and 7th Dragon III hitting 3DS (yet to see how good it will be but it looks decent) and Sonic Racing Transformed, there is at least some hope.
@Detective_TeeJay solid? No, it's not, but it's definitely an ok-ish game, coming from someone who beat the game almost twice. Its definitely a low point in sonics career, but part of me wants to see what the game could have been if the developers spent more time on it
I couldn't bare to waste my money on this series. After Sonic Lost World disappointed me to no end, I went back to play some of the "recent classics" fans always talk about when they say there has been plenty of great Sonic games.
So I bought Rush, Colors and already owned Generations. Well, Colors was mediocre. The platforming just felt off. Maybe the DS version by DIMPS is better, but I didn't bother finding out.
Generations was good though and I loved Rush. In fact Rush was really good. Surprisingly so.
You know despite the rather glitchyness of the game, Rise of Lyric is nowhere near as bad as people say. It's actually quite a good game. And 2-player works great. I think some gamers need to think for themselves and not just agree what the internet tells them.
So, Rise of Lyric's problems are due to it not actually being designed for Wii U? That explains why its debut trailer looked so cool and solid while the end product failed to meet minimal expectations. Sega should've made it clear to Big Red Button to make it for the Wii U from the start, in that case. That's some poor communication management, Sega. I haven't played the game or even its demo yet to see whether all the criticism this game keeps getting is actually overblown or not, but everything that's been shown about it does not make me haste to do so.
Maybe the reason why Shattered Crystal is more highly regarded is because it didn't suffer from being inorganically ported from another system, then.
@AbsoluteZer0Nova I agree, Sonic Colors is a great game (but I prefer Generations). 😄
I was gonna buy this, once...then the reviews hit.
Please tell me I'm not the only one that finds Sonic and Knuckles swearing in English hilarious! I mean, aside from Tails, Cream and maybe Charmy (but he hangs out with Vector so...), they're the last ones I'd expect!
Here's hoping Sega finally reveals the 25th anniversary game at E3. Until then I'll go replay Sonic Heroes on GC; still a fun game!
@MarkyUppy uh huh you played it....when, cause it was patched like the video says. I've beat it about 3 times, it's not as bad as people make out. the team who made the game said this is not a normal sonic game, that is being made by sonic team and this is a spin off. so yeah it's bound to play a little different there are worse sonic games out there imo. sales are low due to 2 factors bad press... something games like fallout 4 get away with mind you, there was many game braking bugs in that game but no one cared. that's the reason i avoid most reviews bias as hell, i couldn't play fallout 4 due to game braking bugs. i could clear rise of lyric day one mind a few glitches. and the other reason is only being on wii u i love the system... but Nintendo screwed up in marketing the thing we all know this to be true.
This game is bad on every platform. Every version has missing animation frames, crappy script and acting, inconsistent gameplay, broken mechanics, weird character design, and tons of glitches. Honestly, this game makes Sonic 06 look good.
They need to stop outsourcing Sonic, and figure out what made Adventure 1 and 2 work, then improve upon that, fast. Because they lost sight of that 11 years ago, but now they're just actively torturing Sonic.
@kenrulei mate, idgaf if the game was patched. The truth is, a few patches can't fix something that is inherently poorly made. It can't. You can defend your poor purchase to try and justify the money you invested in it. But that doesn't make it any more than a rushed, poorly designed and cheap piece of junk.
The truth is that even Sega knew it was a pile of garbage when they released it. They deliberately withheld review copies of the game from publications until after the game was already on the shelves so that people would buy it before the reviews could damage sales. This is Sega basically admitting they know a game is bad. It's why they did it with Boom, it's why they did the same dirty, unhanded trick with Aliens a few years ago too.
The truth is, as a Sonic fan, you shouldn't be defending this terrible stinker of a turd. You should expect more than "ok". We should encourage Sega to take Sonic and make him relevant and great again by NOT justifying them rushing a half finished, unplayable mess to market so they can milk an already dying cash cow.
And deep down, I think you know that you and all Sonic fans as well as Sonic himself deserve more than what Boom delivered.
@AbsoluteZer0Nova Lost World has some serious strong points as well. A sequel to that game would be marvellous.
@C-Olimar I was hoping they would expand on lost world's mechanics much like how Colors and Generations expanded on Unleashed. There was so much potential with the core idea of Lost World, it suffered from experimentation but they should know what works and what doesn't.
Though it's possible they may of ditched that engine altogether just because of some mixed feedback...
@MarkyUppy i'm just pointing out how games can be bad at launch, especially this day and age and not get a bad word said against it, i never said boom was fully patched, i said it was made more playable and i've beat it a few times over. my little brother and sister watch why i play as they enjoy the show, i use it as a movie style of the show such. but when a game get a bug that make you unable to move on have to restart the game to fix it that's more broken to me than a few glitches, and i believe most of the bad sonic boom glitches where caused by unintended glitches you use like the knuckles jump glitch to skip a loading zone, of cause the worlds not gonna be loaded up and cause issues.
@MarkyUppy also did you watch that video art all? it says the game was being made for stronger power than what the wii u had. so when they learnt the game was wii u exclusive they had issues anyone would.
My 4yo cousin desperately wanted this game. He got it. I feel bad for his parents who had to spend money in this piece of s**t. I couldn't even convince him the game sucked, he's not old enough to understand.
I guess that's the kind of audience they were trying to push this game after all.
@NintendoFan64 well that's why you don't always believe reviews my friend, i personally believe play the games you want to, because sonic games are hated on by the gaming press a lot like sonic adventure 2 is called a bad game, yet it has a big fan base wanting more like it. movies fall into the same thing some classic movies where hated by critics but fans to this day watch and call them classics. and the critics said the best thing ever, but the fans hated it after seeing them. so let a review make you look more it, it not say yeah i pass. you might play this game in a few years and say why did i believe the reviews back then. look at sonic adventure 2 reviews you'll be shocked at the scores.
@kenrulei yes I watched the video. And no, it doesn't change anything that I said. At all.
I played the Wii U demo a long while back and thoroughly enjoyed it. I never noticed any glitching or framerate issues (aside from multiplayer), and I even found some of the dialogue to be quite humorous. I thought the multiplayer co-op, with one player on the TV and the other on the GamePad, also worked really well, despite the lower framerate. I wouldn't care to buy this game if I ever see it in a Wal-Mart discount bin or something.
It's a shame Big Red Button's reputation has probably been tarnished by Sonic Boom, despite being a team of experienced developers, when the real fault lies in Nintendo's underpowered hardware and Sega pressuring the company to rush the game out the door.
@kenrulei Dude, if you and your family enjoyed the game then that's great : ) Don't feel you have to justify your opinion just because people imply it's wrong.
Sonic Lost World is the best, followed by Color and Transformed. I even like Sonic Unleashed - the werehog level is pretty fun and features some good platforming. Just remember not to play it with wiimote because the control scheme sucks.
@SouthpawGrammar i didn't say that i said don't believe reviews or a people hating on things, odds are they are on the band wagon with no experience than my friend said x or my favorite you tuber said this. enter said game knowing it's not like the others with the will to accept it you can like the games more. other than this sucks mentality, most people it's not a sonic i'm like um like they said since it shown it's not a normal sonic game style so using that as an excuse is pretty silly to me. you don't see people i don't like mario kart because it's not a mario game... even though mario kart is a spin off of mario. i'll admit sonic boom isn't great, but it's not as bad as people want to make it seem. in years from now i bet it's one of them games people say it wasn't that bad...
This explains a lot. Sonic has been a joke for so long that it's not really funny anymore.
@samuelvictor yeah all star racing transformed was a great game, better than mk to me. the way it changed the tracks on the laps is something i hope they continue in the future. though some modes could use a little change, i haven't played in awhile so maybe it was patched... but damn traffic attack at times where near impossible to get the best score on.
@Nomad Everybody has a different options,
its true though people shouldn't look at the reviews and skip the game, but their so may things wrong with this game, they should have not use Cryengine to developed this title, if issues is toward the engine they should have gone with SEGA's instead. and Maybe it would been a better game then what we have, but instead they had to rush it and not have gotten a better idea of pushing back the game as they did with Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice.
@Detective_TeeJay the games are based on the TV show. The TV show is genuinely hilarious, and part of that is making fun of the stereotypes. Sonic Boom is far and away the best Sonic TV show, and the only one that is enjoyable for those over 6.
@MadAdam81 And I agree. But we weren't talking about the TV show. We were talking about the game. Which is abyssmal.
@kenrulei I agree. I was just saying that loads of people like yourself enjoy the game, regardless of what reviews say, so that is all that matters. Also, Sega racing on the Wii U is a great game one of my favourite launch games.
@Detective_TeeJay No. You haven't played the game. You are basing your opinions on self indulgent reviewers, the massive hate campaign, trolling and backlash on it. You are nothing more than a troll on this post.
I don't believe for one minute you've watched a complete playthrough. As for framerate? Only two player takes a hit now and again and even then it's barely registered and has no impact on gameplay.
I would suggest you and the 99% of Sonic Boom trolls on here play the game before making bandwagon jumping and glory hunting comments.
@Detective_TeeJay You are talking about a game you have admitted to not even playing???????????? That's just wrong.
@liveswired I'm not basing my opinion on anything except what I've witnessed with my own two eyes. You need to have your eyesight checked if you can't register the framerate dropping to sub 15fps during those high speed tracks.
And while I'm at it what was with Shadow, huh? He just popped in to fight Sonic for no good reason with no motivation, and is kicked into the near future iirc. Only to like...watch over them at the end of the game all satisfied like he was their trainer or something. Shadow's entire presence was redundant.
@liveswired Here you go. They made it very entertaining to watch btw.
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLRQGRBgN_EnqYj92UMIs_MlHE9Qxsf-uL
While I'm at it, have a little breakdown of all the crap that's wrong with the VERY FIRST CUTSCENE.
https://youtu.be/ihgztNsc1l8
@rushiosan Its great that you have played this game so much that you can advise the parents of a 4 year old not to get him a game that he wants.
If you actually sat down and played, I would argue that you'll find there is a lot of fun to be had once you ignore the hate campaign.
@C-Olimar
The most potential out of any Sonic game in recent memory, it actually presented a chance for the series to grow. I'd love a sequel.
@Detective_TeeJay You really need to formulate your own opinions by playing games instead of voicing others.
Sonic games have always been ridiculous and silly. Why care so much about a game you will never play? Sonic Boom RoL doesn't even pretend to be serious which the pretentious critics are ignoring, it's a light hearted action adventure game.
People are free to enjoy the game, I chose to ignore the concentrated hate campaign that you have been indoctrinated into. I was very surprised by how good this game actually plays.
Star Fox Zero is another recent victim of hate campaigns by pretentious critics and non players. Heck, some reviewers refused to give it a score. It's one of the best games I've played this year and it's control system is utter brilliance.
@liveswired I gave you so many specific points and reasons to how exactly this game is trash. I linked you to the playthrough I watched. I linked you to a breakdown of just how much of a mess the very first cutscene alone is. And still you think I'm just parroting what I've heard without any thoughts of my own?
At this point I don't know what more to tell you. It seems the only people who you will believe are not part of a hive mind are the people who agree with you.
@liveswired After reading your comment, I seriously hope nobody tries to reply comparing Sonic Boom (developed by a small, sub-company) to Star Fox Zero.
These two cases are COMPLETELY different if you search for the hate source in reviews and player opinions. Sonic Boom is just a bad game, with lots of bad choices (writing/voice acting being one of them) and poorly designed in every area: stages, mechanics, programming, pacing. Star Fox Zero had unexpected complex controls and a very, very particular vehicle which didn't made people happy. I didn't see any complaint about "this game was poorly designed", "Platinum and Nintendo did a bad job on level design", "it's boring".
@rushiosan the only people who defend this trash are people who try to justify their purchase or people too young to know any better.
If they're the latter, then they are too young to understand that defending this kind of dreck actually hurts the industry as a whole by telling lazy developers that rushing games to market is OK as long as there are MORONS willing to pay for (and defend) this kind of half baked garbage.
You can't fool all of the people all of the time. But you can fool some of the people, some of the time, I guess...
@kenrulei Who gave SA2 bad reviews? Most people reviewed it higher than SA1, for focusing on action stages and Chao raising, while ditching the questionably laid out hub world of SA1. Some people criticized the Knuckles/Rouge stages, but SA2 as a whole usually got 8/10. It was nowhere near the brokenness that is Sonic Boom...
@LegendOfPokemon That's perfectly understandable. Generations had multiple paths in levels and was better than Unleashed as a overall game, but I can say the latter was only good for 1/2 because of those Werehog levels. Heck I think Generations had the best boss fights thanks to Metal Sonic (certainly better than Sonic CD boss race) Perfect Chaos (a boss battle where it's like going through a level) and Silver (so much better than 06) battles, unfortunately Time Eater was a complete disappointment for a final boss and I wasn't too happy with Planet Wisp classic because the Spike wisp wasn't implemented good there like it was in Colors.
@C-Olimar I agree that Lost World's mechanics do have potential. I still have the game too, however it was a step back from Colors and Generations. The game at best for me was alright, though it's too bad some people couldn't get used to the parkour controls.
You know, talking about certain aspects of "Designated Heroes" is what got me suspended, then banned from Sonic Stadium's Forums. It was about Sticks the Badger's bare feet. They have no toes, and if the hands of Sonic characters had no fingers, you can't very well call Knuckles "Knuckles," can you? It would be Powerpuff fisticuffs.
@MarkyUppy No, you haven't played it. The problem with gamers these days is they watch a video, listen to online 'opinions', read pretentious reviews, which in general are geared towards the popular trend, if a game is loved give it a good score! The current hate figure? Rate it down to hell.
As it is the worst selling Sonic game I highly doubt many gamers purchased this game.
If Miiverse is anything to go by, most people on there seem to think it's pretty good fun.
As for gamers trying to justify paying for the game. I nabbed it for £7 out of pure curiosity and was pleasantly surprised.
Your comments are full of teenage rage and angst. Why is it so difficult to accept that, just maybe, some people don't follow trends or agree with your opinion on everything? Ah well.
@rushiosan Really? I read reviews stating level design was baron and average at best, boss fights referred to as boring and in cases unplayable. Polygon wouldn't even give it a score.
that's kind of sad because I always felt like Sonic Boom had a lot of potential. I even like some of the jokes in the tv show (but I don't like how they dumbed down Knuckles).
Watch game grumps play Sonic boom, rise of Lyric. That alone proves how buggy and glitch It is, the game isn't that fun. I had much more fun with Sonic lost world. Although I will say the 3ds version was much better, it had a fun system and Fire and Ice could definitely be good.
@liveswired so you know my life now eh? I own the f**king game. Lmao. Don't go telling me what I have and haven't played. You have no idea, you silly child. Are you really that stupid that you're going to sit there and tell me what games I have and have not ever played? Do you know how moronic you sound?
As for teenage angst, I'm a 32 year old grown man, who happens to be in the gaming industry.
You however, seem to be defending the game very aggressively to the point where you are making yourself look like a foolish baby. Especially telling people what they have or haven't played. Pathetic.
@patbacknitro17 I actually linked to their Sonic Boom playthrough a couple comments earlier, haha
It's crazy how consistant and glaring the glitches are.
@MarkyUppy Really? Well mate I'm 41 and have been playing games since the Atari 2600. Are you saying because I bought the game I'm somehow trying to justify my purchase. If I had wanted to I could have easily taken it back to EB games and swapped it for something else like I've done countless other times with games I didn't like. You really shouldn't try to justify your reasoning by insinuating that others are young and inexperienced or morons.
@Nomad why don't you go back and reread all the comments made by me and the other guy. I've already explained why the game was bad, how Sega deliberately tried to trick people into buying the game and how defending this trash hurts the industry. Don't join a debate without reading the entire thing...
@MarkyUppy I've read every comment.
Wii U game is utter crap, 3DS one is okay but I didn't play it much, and the show is excellent. Overall the brand get's 6.5/10 for me.
@liveswired Polygon isn't a good reference to be honest, but many people/journalists doesn't seem to understand what makes a good shoot-em-up good: shooting stuff for high scores. It's not about complex plot, long campaign or anything. Star Fox Zero did a great job. It's been a decade since a true modern entry to the genre (not counting indies of course) came up.
@Detective_TeeJay Ya no kidding. but in all honesty I think the glitch's made this game better then if it ran perfectly. I mean the story's bland and lazy, the dialogue of the characters is just horrible puns of heroic quips, And the worlds are less then colorful quite the stepdown from Sonic Lost world. without the glitch's this game would of failed big time, But with the glitchs this game has sold fairly good just because everyone wants to play it. Its like Sonic 06, the reason everyone plays it is to test it. To find the glitchs, and to just have fun crapping on the game. So in all fairness I think the glitch's help look past all that is wrong with the core game, and instead helps us have fun with what is so wrong with the game.
@MarkyUppy
You are wasting your time.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I think this game is absolutely RUBBISH. Others seems to think it's GOTY.
Anyone defending this game has poor taste. Putting everything else aside, how can anyone seriously think the glitches in this game is not a MAJOR issue?
As you correctly pointed out even Sega knew it was crap and tried to con people.
Did you know Sega didn't even allowed the game to be reviewed until it was on the shelves? Says it all.
@Hotfusion yeah. I know. It was a dirty trick that they also pulled when they released Aliens a few years earlier because they knew that was a stinker too. Lol. I've stopped trying to argue though. If people want to live in denial, they aren't hurting anyone. I guess 😂
@liveswired : Don't review games or anything like that during our lifetime, pleeeeeeeeeeaase!
@kenrulei :
"well that's why you don't always believe reviews my friend, i personally believe play the games you want to"
Gotta check reviews as games cost money, if they never costed money people wouldn't need reviews.
@Not_Soos Big Red Button has 5 years to develop Rise of Lyrics. Look up the fact.
@MarkyUppy Yeah mate, you're right. You got me. I'm just a moron in denial. From now on I will only choose to like what the majority of people tell me to like and dislike. Thank you for making my life easier. Now I don't have to think for myself anymore when choosing what games to play. Thank God we have people like you to guide us inexperienced gamers.
Glad you admit it dude xx
