Super Monkey Ball was arguably one of the GameCube's most appealing early releases, offering a gripping concept, appealing lead character and hours of challenge. While the Monkey Ball series has since moved onto other platforms, it will forever be associated with Nintendo's boxy home console - even if it didn't technically start life on that particular system.
Our good friend Daniel "Slopes" Ibbertson has put together this 20 minute epic which attempts to cover all of Monkey Ball's history, from its original 2001 arcade release to recent portable entries on 3DS, PS Vita and mobile phones.
As always, it's highly informative and well worth a watch, so grab yourself a hot drink and enjoy.

Huge thanks for featuring my content again Nintendolife always a pleasure!
I had the Super Monkey Ball Deluxe game on Xbox, good times.
I can't trust anything he says in this video. He said Monkey Ball 3D can be controlled with the stylus.
It can't. Your options are circle pad or motion controls.
I don't think he even played the game. Sice I've only played one other Monkey Ball game (Super on GameCube) how can I believe anything he says about the others?
@C-Olimar I may had made a mistake with this, Please feel free to leave a comment in the video And i will credit you with correcting the error
I always enjoyed the Monkey Ball series. Why isn't their one on Wii U? Reboot inbound!!!! SEGA????
@djslope Oh I didn't expect you to read these comments. Now I feel bad for being harsh. For what it's worth I actually did like the video up 'til that point (and do like )
@C-Olimar I am hiding in the bushes reading everything you write Honestly though, more than happy for you to comment that in the video and I will thumb it up so that way you get the credit.
@djslope I don't mind about credit but I commented anyway, it's under Dominic.
You should play Monkey Ball 3D. It's short and easy but pretty good fun, and the Mario Kart clone in it isn't bad either.
Our household lost days to the mini games, finishing mastermode and going for crazy flick shots and short cuts. God bless AV.
@C-Olimar I actually did have it before I sold it It was the 1st game I played on the system actually
Nice video.
I still long myself to play another good game in the series like 1 or 2.
The surreal backgrounds were nice too. Such nice ambience. (especially the second game)
I still remember when I first reached the Master Stages in SMB1.
Monkey Target is my fave minigame.
I miss Monkey Ball! Despite the bad reviews, Super Monkey Ball Adventure is my favorite game of the series. Monkey Target was also very fun!
"As always, it's highly informative and well worth a watch, so grab yourself a hot drink and enjoy."
I honestly would have done this but before I can watch the video, I have to listen to a youtube ad about how a unicorn poops out ice cream then goes on to advertise more poop related propaganda. Not anybody's fault/complaining, just saying. Maybe I'll return later and have better luck.
The rude language in the video was unnecessary.
I hope they continue this series someday but it feels like it's past it's prime and not many cared or liked the 3DS version :/
Man, Super Monkey Ball 1 and 2 were some of my favorite games growing up. Hell, I'd say they are two of my favorite games of all time. The games were simple fun, offering easy controls for everyone but also challenging level designs for gamers. Seriously, it's pretty stupid how hard the later levels got considering its child-like appeal. But honestly, that's why people love the original games so much. I also remember enjoying Jr. very much on my GBA.
Sadly, the series went downhill after that. Super Monkey Ball Adventure was lame and just a chore to play. Banana Blitz was actually a decent game, even if it was a lot different from previous installments. And I never played the DS version... heard it was pretty good, though.
But then we got Step and Roll... I despise that game. There are some people who enjoyed it, but I found the level design to be awful. I know it was developed with the balance board in mind... but still, the levels were just boring. The 3DS version was definitely an improvement, but the game was still too easy and short. I never played the VITA version, but I've heard good things about it. I can order it online for less than ten bucks, so I'll try to pick it up sometime this summer.
Not all of the new Monkey Ball games are necessarily bad, but it's a shame to the series stumble over the past decade or so. I'd love it if Sega made a true Super Monkey Ball 3 and brought back the challenge that made the series so popular.
Why the heck Super Monkey Ball never got a WiiU release, I'll never know.
The gamepads motion controll would be ideal for moving around courses. They could even add mini games by flicking a monkey ball on the touch screen.
@wiggleronacid Yeah. I will always remember Exam-C (SMB1 expert level 7)
It was like impossible at the time, and it only added the sense of trying to improve, since you were still missing 43 (63) levels to see.
I think SEGA should ditch the gimmick controls (motion sensor) and return the game to be played with a joystick. That way they can comfortably design much better levels.
The DS was nice, but my main problem with it was that half of the levels were recycled from previous games, so it wasn't that surprising.
Have you played the mobile games too? They are decent and I had fun playing them, but the level design feels a bit lacking most of the time.
I have heard too that the Vita is an improvement, and supposedly has a stage editor. Wish I could play it since I don't have a Vita.
Classic Sega, one of the last greats.
I didn't know that game series, seems to have existed for quite some time.
The gameplay looks directly influenced by Glover (N64), but I guess that's okay. However, I don't get how Nintendo/Rare never filed a copyright complain? That character is a blatant copy of Diddy Kong!
No Monkey Ball on current-gen? Studios like Sega and Capcom seem to hate their good franchises.
I really like Banana Blitz, but it was the only game in the series I played (other than the arcade version).
ahhhhi loved super monkey ball 2 , best memories with my cousins
