It's the middle of the week, which means it's time to look over what's hot and what's not in Japan with the Media Create charts. Level-5 will be rolling around in bundles of cash once again, while there are both positives and negatives for Nintendo.
Kicking off with software, Yo-kai Sangokushi on 3DS seized top spot - it's a crossover with Koei Tecmo's Three Kingdoms IP. Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3 has also had a reasonable week, while Pokkén Tournament on Wii U passed 100,000 physical retail sales. Splatoon did drop outside of the top ten, but considering the fact that is was released last May that seems fair enough - the top 20 is below with lifetime sales in brackets.
- [3DS] Yo-kai Sangokushi (Level-5, 04/02/16) – 269,516 (New)
- [PS4] Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness (Square Enix, 03/31/16) – 113,022 (New)
- [3DS] Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3 (Square Enix, 03/24/16) – 98,634 (467,299)
- [PS4] Dark Souls III (Bandai Namco, 03/24/16) – 33,406 (243,547)
- [Wii U] Pokken Tournament (Pokemon, 03/18/16) – 14,295 (112,302)
- [PSV] Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition (SCE, 03/19/15) – 10,657 (723,479)
- [3DS] Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games (Nintendo, 02/18/16) – 10,294 (129,482)
- [3DS] Assassination Classroom: Assassin Training Plan (Bandai Namco, 03/24/16) – 10,149 (29,647)
- [PSV] Hatsune Miku: Project Diva X (Sega, 03/24/16) – 10,073 (79,511)
- [PS4] Winning Post 8 2016 (Koei Tecmo, 03/31/16) – 8,367 (New)
- [Wii U] Splatoon (Nintendo, 05/28/15) – 8,120 (1,318,600)
- [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf (Happy Price Selection) (Nintendo, 03/17/16) – 7,627 (22,364)
- [PSV] Winning Post 8 2016 (Koei Tecmo, 03/31/16) – 6,166 (New)
- [PS4] The Division (Ubisoft, 03/10/16) – 5,446 (119,860)
- [3DS] Tomodachi Life (Happy Price Selection) (03/17/16) – 4,971 (13,223)
- [Wii U] Super Mario Maker (Nintendo, 09/10/15) – 4,873 (834,231)
- [PS4] Dead or Alive Xtreme 3: Fortune (Koei Tecmo, 03/24/16) – 4,765 (49,488)
- [PS4] Nobunaga's Ambition: Sphere of Influence Sengoku Risshiden (Koei Tecmo, 03/24/16) – 4,684 (25,007)
- [PS4] Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (Konami, 09/02/15) – 4,492 (454,420)
- [PS3] Winning Post 8 2016 (Koei Tecmo, 03/31/16) – 4,472 (New)
Moving on to hardware we had declines across the board (apart from PS3 and Xbox One), though the New 3DS LL (XL) comfortably held onto second place behind PS4. The Wii U had another disappointing week, dropping to a little over 3,500 sales; results are below with last week's sales in brackets.
- PlayStation 4 – 30,081 (34,377)
- New 3DS LL – 22,020 (22,639)
- PlayStation Vita – 17,153 (20,068)
- New 3DS – 5,376 (5,773)
- Wii U – 3,541 (4,545)
- 3DS – 2,069 (2,322)
- PlayStation 3 – 1,537 (1,290)
- 3DS LL – 342 (365)
- Xbox One – 207 (55)
That's it for another week in the Japanese charts - once again Yo-kai and Level-5 are the big winners.

Pokken actually seems like it's being taken seriously in the FGC. So hopefully that helps it sales while people start hopping on board with it.
They'll be spin offs, many MANY Yokai Watch spin offs like Kart, Party, Tennis, Golf, Baseball, Basketball, Both Footballs, Mystery Dungeons, Olympics, just to name a few after this... XD
The Wii U needs stock.
Hopefully the Wii U stock issues will be solved in Japan soon as it is sad for the Japanese people that doesn't get a chance to play Wii U games they really want.
Either way I am glad at least that there are Nintendo games are still selling fairly decently :+).
Super Mario Maker will hit a million I reckon
Wow, another week in which Mario & Sonic isn't dead even though it's more than a month it's out (although admittedly its reception by Famitsu was definitely positive, so maybe this kind of games fits well Japanese culture, and there are enough 3DS around that local multiplayer only is viable)! I wonder if SEGA is happy about those results.
Good to know that Pokkén isn't dead either!
P.S.: Xbox One sales were almost 4x those of the last week, this is odd although with these numbers even statistical fluctuations are relevant...
Reading this list just reminded me how much I want Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness but also how I'm not willing to drop $500 on a PS4 just to play it. Now I'm sad.
I seriously do not understand how the stock issues could be bad for so long, I am starting to think it is a little BS now with people saying it is low stocks. If there really is low stocks, by this point it must be a forced low stock in preparation for something else.
Sony really stole the show with remote play on the Vita.
Graphics better than the Wii U, on a device smaller than the GamePad, with a better screen to boot.
And you can take it anywhere.
Only downside is the slightly longer latency. And the horriffic price of such a setup. And that games aren't really built for for utilizing it in any interesting ways because designers can't count on you owning both.
Actually those remind me why I'm not very interested.
For years I've wanted Pokemon Conquest 2.
Koei makes Youkai Sangokushi instead...
...
eh, hopefully it get's localized before 2020.
Thank goodness 3DS games still sell. Nintendo had better put a bullet in WiiU's head at E3 and announce the NX. I've seen multiple tings lately that show the amiibo fad is ending (outside of the super rare ones), so Nintendo needs to find a way to make money. And since Miitomo is free, that's not it.
@XCWarrior Wii U games do well over in Japan. look at life time sales. in the top 20 there are only 2 games > 800k. Both on Wii U! Quit being so negative.
The wii u console wont get healthy numbers again until we know more about the NX. For all consumers know the NX could play wii u games so many folks wouldnt want to jump the gun with all the rumors floating around.
@GrailUK I said I like the system, own both those games - Mario Maker and Splatoon - heck I'll wager good money I own more WiiU games than you do. But there is only 1 more system seller coming, and Zelda isn't even a biggie in Japan, only NA.
The time is here - sadly too soon - to reveal the new hotness. Though it better be exciting to take people's attention away from VR and the PS 4.5K which will likely have the power of 2 NXs taped together. And PLEASE normal controller so people aren't scared away like they were with the gamepad. Wiimote was brilliant, need to go in that direction.
@XCWarrior I used to agree with you about Zelda in Japan, but the new game being open world and seeing reviews of Witcher3 in famitsu, it might be a surprise hit for Nintendo so I am not going to commit to it being doomed yet. Western games have been doing slightly better recently (Division got 10/9/10/9!!!). I can't see Nintendo releasing a gamebox and pad. They said new concept and I believe it will be just that but god, I hate this waiting
@GrailUK Zelda TriForce heroes, on the much better selling 3DS, did not do great. Not bad, not great.

And I know its VGchartz, but you can generally trust there Japan sales numbers. Skyward Sword didn't move the needle either.

Ugh, that's depressing to Skyward Sword only sold 4 million - on the Wii! It's a great game, but I think Skyrim destroyed it, came out like the same week or something.
@XCWarrior Yep I agree with you that history is against it, but I dunno, Zelda U seems like a new direction. We will see
@GrailUK Yeah, I agree, the 20 seconds we've seen look promising. I hope Zelda U is massive, and more open world where you can do dungeons in whatever order you want. Hopefully we see details at E3, or sooner.
I loved every 3D Zelda out of Wind Waker (liked it, but I hate water levels, and its water world). Tried Triforce Heroes demo during E3 week, that's not meant to be played online with no voice chat. Silly Nintendo.
@Pod actualy the update yesterday enables remote play for PC and Mac. So if you have a laptop, you can play anywhere.
These statics are pretty interesting.
Make more systems Nintendo! I am watching the new yokai watch and the Star Ocean games to see if they are worth diving into.
@Seacliff I'm looking at it as a spiritual sequel. I think they are trying to ride the bigger popularity wave, so they switched franchises.
@Ryu_Niiyama Don't get me wrong, I'm not that disappointed. I actually like Yo-kai watch, and this spinoff does seem like fun. If it does play a bit like Pokemon Conquest, just with more Yo-kai elements, then I'm pretty hyped for it.
@diwdiws
Well then something good did come out of buying Gaikai.
@Pod
It's OK latency wise as long as you use it like the Wii U Gamepad I.e. you're in the same room. What kills it is the lack of buttons compared to the PS4 pad.
As @diwdiws says there's now an update to play the PS4 through a Computer. Haven't tried it yet but the XB1 works well through Windows 10 so fingers crossed.
I hate this stupid franchise. Japan has no taste.
No dignity!
