Back in early March the Nintendo Direct in Japan unveiled a rather lovely Super Famicom New Nintendo 3DS LL (or XL, as it is in the West), which does a fine job of recreating the 16-bit gem's console look on the system.
Box art for the portable has now emerged and it does a great job of capitalising on nostalgia for the 16-bit era. Check it out below (thanks, Kyle McLain)
Due this month in Japan - though import site Play-Asia doesn't expect stock until the summer - it's one of the most handsome 3DS editions we've seen. A release in the West naturally seems like a longshot, but we like to dream.
Would you splash out on one of these if it was brought to North America and PAL territories?

I've always thought that the Japanese SF box art is way nicer then than what we got in the UK.
Need to buy a new 3DS since my other got bricked haha. Been using the orginal one. If this comes to west, I'll defiantly buy instead of paying 300 for the Pokemon anniversary.
I'd love to get one but the question if I buy it depends on whether NX is released this year or not. Already gonna get a PSVR so both, 3DS and NX would be too much.
Are there SNES faceplates that I can import for the smaller model?
I would but I already got the Hyrule gold one. It's because I would trade it for this one. The scalpers didn't jump on the gold one so I rushed to get it instead of waiting like I should have.
The box makes it look like a Fisher-Price toy.
How about a picture from the front?
EDIT: Never mind, already found it...

Instabuy for me if it comes to EU!!
If my XL ever packs in, this would probs be the way to go.
That is one tasteful box, but yeah, love the faceplates.
Take my money!!!
Take my money!
I would definitely buy one of these if it came to the UK, but it would need to be the Super Famicom version as that's what I had growing up. I don't want a purple breezeblock version nor a reminder of how bad PAL games were back then....
What a beauty! I'm very satisfied with my Majora's Mask New 3DS, so I don't need it, but pheww, I wish I had it. :3
"Take my money"? If you're in a territory other than Japan, Nintendo doesn't want your money — they're just fine landlocking all the cool stuff within Japan, as usual. GameStop did get that exclusive Retro NES 3DS XL but it wasn't one of the New 3DS models, though. I don't expect Nintendo to ever change in that regard (or in other ways either).
I actually don't like it very much. The grey inside with the famicom coloured buttons looks lovely but I'm not fond of the outside at all.
Ohhhh
For the people who never seen, or don't remember what the original Super Famicom console box art looked like, here is a photo of the original print:

Additionally, this isn't the first time Nintendo Co., Ltd. repeated the retro box art design. They also used it for the box art of the Club Nintendo-exclusive Super Famicom Classic Controller for the Wii:

I'm importing that bad boy.
I prefer the Pokemon anniversary edition. But, even then, It doesn't convince me to upgrade from my pretty aqua blue original 3DS
That looks really nice. But I only just got a New 3DS XL Hyrule Edition the other week. So I am happy with my Hyrule Edition
That's cool.
I'd buy one if Europe had them released, however they might get a release as cover plates.
I love the idea of a Famicom style 3DS, but I know Nintendo could have done a better job than simply sticking a print or whatever it is on the outside. It didn't need to actually copy the SNES directly, just capture the general colour scheme and look and feel. This, to me, looks a bit cheap. It's still kinda cool though, such is the awesomeness of the SNES.
I live in Japan and ordered mine today. The confirmation email said the systems will ship from late July to the end of August, with those purchasing first receiving first. It's nice they are making numbers that match demand instead of producing a small number for scalpers to grab up.
I eagerly wait for Amazon Japan to list that baby <3
@The_BAAD_Man I'm pretty sure then that you're from the US? :3
The box art is decent, but the system itself is SWEEEEEEEET!
I want this now.
I want this now.
Wow that's gourgeous! I'm not sure my wrists can handle the weight of it, but would buy in normal version for sure!
I've got a XL and LL already.. must... resist
Just hope that Reggie will not ruin this by releasing an SNES colored one instead. As cool as an SNES was, the Super Famicom evokes more in nostalgia, and looks cooler...
I can take comfort in knowing my wallet is safe as this will never come to the US.
I need this in PAL!! Please come out in UK, Europe or Australia!
Want.
@Koke can (lol) I ask you to get me one as well, tried to go on the official website but it looks like they only ship within Japan. (bows head) Onegaishimasu!...don't worry if you don't want to .
Shut up this is so cool, wish NoA would give fans as much love as NoJ does. I'd love a SNES version of this...
Oh man! Someone get to Photoshop and make box art for a European SNES New 3DS using the PAL SNES box art! http://www.neostore.com/v/vspfiles/photos/1363-2.jpg
It looks nice. But all told I prefer black as it's better for playing in the dark 😁 😁
VERY cool box art! If they released a SNES themes New XL, I'd be all over it.
I need that in my life
Not bad. I really love my Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate edition though! Can't replace that.
Would LOVE this. I wound up buying (in a rather tipsy state) the US Pink 3DSXL at the Nintendo World Store in manhattan hahaha. Oh well, I've made worse drunken decisions in my life!
Too bad it doesn't have an equally amazing second analog stick.
Now that is awesome. Hopefully they will give the same edition to Europe as well, since in Europe the Super Nintendo looked that awesome as well.
In America it looked like an ugly gray box.
Curse you regional lockout!
@Rutana Nope, I'm from Ireland. I love how the SNES looks, I just don't think the design looks great stuck on a 3DS
