It wasn't so long ago that Shin Megami Tensei IV: Final arrived on 3DS in Japan, and now Atlus has confirmed some pleasing news - it's coming to the Americas this Summer as Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse.
Tying into events from Shin Megami Tensei IV, though you don't necessarily have to play that one first, this one has a plot and characters that partially overlap. For fans of the series it also offers a few twists to the gameplay formula, summarised in the press release extract below.
- Divine Intrigue - Choose between peace or anarchy while being a pawn in the gods' chess game.
- Combat Partners - Hunting demons is dangerous, so count on some backup! Alongside the standard three demons, players will be able to rely on one of seven partners to help win battles.
- Oodles of Demons - Be on your guard because Tokyo is infested with a series record 450+ demons to fight, fuse, or recruit.
- Revamped Demon Fusion - Demons will have affinities for certain skills, so players can better plan the outcome of fusions.
- Classic SMT Combat - Prospective Hunters will exploit weaknesses, boost attributes, and unlock skill bonuses with the returning Press Turn and Smirking systems.
As is often the case with these localised Atlus titles it'll come at a premium price of $49.99 / CA$64.99 at both retail and on the eShop. We suspect there'll be a handsome day one edition, too, though Atlus is keeping that close to its chest so far; there are no European release details, either.
You can see a flashy trailer below; are you looking forward to this one?

Atlus is going to really hit it out of the park this year.
This is huge! I was starting to become unsure of its localization, but it is Final-ly here!
I know I haven't been buying a lot of games this year I want because I have a huge backlog but this is day one as well as EOV whenever that comes! Can't wait!
name change?
muh censorship vidjagarmes!
This is going to come out before Persona 5. Hilarious!
Enjoyed the SMTIV so will definately keep my eye on this! It definately has a cool soundtrack
@CharlieSmile Haha, I know you're kidding, but Atlus even went so far as to write an article explaining the name change, except the url seems to be a dud. They're clearly aware that some are never happy with changes, however!
Those SMT synths always give me goosebumps.
I'm glad they changed the title from Final. That made it sound more like an extended version of the first game, rather than a complete sequel with new characters and story. Looking forward to this one!
Awesome, awesome. This makes the year complete.
I also approve the name change. Apocalypse is such a cool word.
Europe, Europe, yada yada yada
Thank you, Atlus.
Anybody knows if there's a overworld so bad as Tokyo in Shin Megami Tensei IV?
Good for those who want to get it....me personally, I'm not into it.
I just don't know if I'll like it.
Good stuff. Once I figured out the recruiting system in SMT IV, game was amazing.
Look forward to being grossed out by lots of new monsters.
@Socar If you like Pokemon but want more of a challenge, this game is for you. Unless you don't want a much more mature setting, or are not into anime with its weird settings.
But it's a really good RPG, just has some complexities for sure.

Based on playing my discounted copy of SMTIV at CAD $29.99, I would wait to buy this new one at 13.99 (the sale price of SMTIV right now). Frequent random battles hurt the experience and I know there is a way to avoid low-level ones and I might go another round one of these days when I learn how to curb that part of the experience. Maybe I should have been playing Devil Survivor this whole time.
I was expecting this announcement to be late this year, so I am happy to know that will come really soon!!
I absolutely enjoyed this first SMTIV, so I am hyped about this one, specially after seeing some gameplay that indicates it may fill some plot holes of the original and build a much more lively and interesting world that pulsating post apocalyptic Tokyo deserves. And, please, fix some of the needless repetition after the first play trough in the subsequent new game plus.
Then certainly we will have a big essential on the stellar 3DS RPG gallery!!
Europe Europe Europe Atlus.
EUROPEEEEEEE!
@XCWarrior Its setting is actually the real problem I have......I just don't know if I can get used to it.
Yes!!!! All my hype! Atlus is going to drain all my money
Poor Europe though
Just want to make it clear: This game was announced, finished, released in Japan, localized, and announced the US release date in the span since P5's announcement.
Not that I'm complaining. It is all good.
I'll be eagerly awaiting the European release date, assuming it happens. Atlus, don't let us down.
I wonder if there is going to be a bunch of DLC missions like SMT4. Regardless, I am hyped!
Oh yeah! Can't wait!
what about europe???i need this.smt is my favorite game series for a while now.
@CharlieSmile The first comment on the article that @ThomasBW84 mentioned, at least by my perception, actually interprets the name change as being censorship, saying: "That is way more than we get from say Treehouse for example…"
Really, really looking forward to this one! Never beat IV due to a massive backlog that built up, but maybe I'll go back know and clean it up. Glad to see the quick localization timetable!
@TheDavyStar "I will soak these fields with your blood."
Yeah, the Treehouse is totally crazy about censorship
So we Europeans are going to get it in 2018? Hope it doesn't take as long as usual for Atlus games cause this has been one of my most anticipated games since it was announced.
I bought SMT IV about a year ago during one of those Atlus sales and my mind was completely blown. I probably should've mentioned I had never played any SMT game before, but yeah, I absolutely love that game.
On a side note, I would have preferred keeping Final in the West too, it just sounds rad; though I'll admit Apocalypse sounds good as well.
Europe please, please
Main SMT series is one of the last JRPG series for manly men because it doesn't do fanservice nonsense for highschool girls. I need my JRPG fix
i don't think i'll bother with this even if it gets a physical European release (which i doubt it will). i lost interest waiting for SMTIV to come out here in Europe and didn't want a digital copy.
@Socar If you live in America, I'd advise you to buy the game and get used to the setting. SMT is a very accurate depiction of what America will look like during a Donald Trump presidency.
@XCWarrior Not that setting. Its way of using religious stuff.....If that's not a setting, then I'm sorry.
@Socar OK, well with a serious response now, yeah I get that. Games like to "make up" religions, but you can tell they are just copying from the existing ones most of the time. SMT IV had serious religious tones throughout the game. I just look at it as a story, but if that bugs ya, I'd stay away.
@Socar SMT uses real world religions and mythologies as material to create engaging, dark fantasy universes. These games aren't meant to be a serious critique of whatever deity you happen to worship.
With that said, if you're sensitive about religious stuff, then stay far away from this series. The subject better is frequently extremely dark, and most of these games either have you kill God or some stand in for God by the end of the game.
SMTIV: Apocalypse sounds far better than final and it also helps clear any misunderstament that the original name might cause.
Atlus is really on a roll this year!
Nice. Can always count on Atlus.
@Ralizah I'm actually an atheist....its just that, I'm not really sure if I'll be comfortable playing this game with its extreme content as I'm not used to playing such games and when I do play them, I usually don't like them at all.
I'm looking at what game from Shin megami tensei I should try out first. Wonder if getting this one first is fine instead.
@Socar The games aren't "extreme" for the novelty of it, and are never exploitative or gratuitous. Rather, they explore complex and serious philosophical issues through the medium of dark fantasy.
SMT IV is on sale in the NA eshop right now. That's probably the best place to start. If you don't like it, then at least you won't have paid much for it. Also, this is a direct sequel to that game.
Very nice. Hopefully they do another special sale with this like they did with the first one. Buy Fire Emblem Fates and this and get a $30 eShop credit.
Very nice! I'm looking forward to it!
We will see if there's any major censorship when it releases, pertaining to the big guy upstairs. In that regard, the content of SMT2, and perhaps also low sales of SMT1 on Western mobile, has thus far completely prevented SMT2 from being released in the West. We still have a boatload of Puritans running around in the USA, so hopefully Atlus can slip SMT4:A through without any false controversy.
@XCWarrior LOL, if Trump gets elected, America will be invaded by demons (possessed xenophobes), and then two fanatical groups will form to fight each other (Neo-Union and Neo-Confederacy); followed by a huge flood from stronger storms brought by the melting north polar ice cap, and huge methane releases from melted permafrost regions and exposed underwater methane deposits... And of course, don't forget the nuke fired off by some negative yahoo or another. It'll be SMT1 all over again!
Guess we better learn how to whisper with demons, and maybe practice how to press turn IRL!
honestly what is with these prices in canada. there is no way i am paying $64.99 on a 3DS game, no matter how good the games is. I really hate the Cdn economic right now. I miss the days when games were only $39.99
@Ralizah But from what I've researched about this sequel, this doesn't take place after its original does it?
Well I guess time will tell how or when I can get into the IV....Idk. Like getting games for me takes a while a bit.
Living in Ireland that means it's coming to the eshop only in 2017 for half the price. Uhhh... woo?
@Pokefanmum82
For that price, I think it should come with a lot of collectible extras, like soundtrack, artbook, etc. Guess we'll see, but if it's just the game, I totally agree, that sucks.
@PlywoodStick I doubt they'll censor out that bit of content from this game. Atlus only really censors stuff to avoid an AO rating. The only reason TMS is getting censored is because the prudes at NoA are apparently overseeing the localization.
"BURROUGHS!"
Can't wait to get into this. The first one had some awesome demon dialogue. I loved their personalities; takes Pokemon and collecting one step further.
Awesome, I was just finishing up Shin Megami Tensei IV and Persona Q so hearing news that this one is coming is exciting to me. Still I hope they had a Shin Megami Tensei V in the planning too.
You know what'd be lovely, SMT IV and SMT IV:A limited edition physical release in Europe, that'd be great!
I still haven't played the previous one... I didn't even realize there was SMT4 sequel in Japan. I don't know jack about the series but bought 4 when it was released to give the series a shot (since people go on and on about them).
If they don't revamp the game's map system then it's a pass for me.
If released in the UK I'll snap it up.
I hate these kinds of games.
...But it's a different story when it's SMT. I've liked them more than the Persona series so this is definitely on my radar.
@Salnax There will be DLC missions. They include getting demons like Mephisto and Cleopatra as well as a boss fight against Stephen with your party members being You, The SMT I Hero, The SMT II Hero, The Demi-Fiend and Flynn.
@Socar This game takes place somewhere around the neutral route of IV
@Tsurii There are no random encounters in this new one?
@Tsurii After avoiding a few enemies by running away, more appear and gang up to the point where there have me surrounded and I must engage in battle. I discovered there's an item to skip battles with lower-level enemies entirely and it still gives EXP.
