Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate has been obsessing a core of 3DS fans for over a year now, and with Monster Hunter Generations on the way there's now renewed focus on the series. To demonstrate that point Digital Foundry has revisited the Capcom title to show the improvements in performance when played on a New 3DS.
We and many others made the observation at release that, beyond the C-Stick camera movement, the New 3DS also delivers a stronger framerate performance. Considering how few games utilise the stronger CPU of the iterative hardware it's a perk worth enjoying, though cutscenes don't seem to benefit. Presumably because the Digital Foundry team can now capture and analyse a New 3DS unit it's decided to prove the point, and also demonstrates that there are also visual enhancements between systems.

...bit late there. I wonder why it took so long to get New 3DS footage.
They should do one for hyrule warriors legends
I never knew the graphics has improvements on the N3DS. It's better to play this on the N3DS anyway for that useful C-Stick, though the game is still playable without it.
@Meowpheel They did actually, very recently. It's on their channel. It pairs Wii U vs New 3DS vs 3DS.
@Mr_Diabolical oh that was fast, then! Thanks.
Did they only just recently buy a new 3DS?
People didn't know about this until just now? I saw comparisons from others like GaijinHunter before the US even got MH4U.

Yup, they're still the same as always.
Shouldn't they have a list of all the changes for it by now? It's been out for a while.
I am currently playing through dkc returns 3d on my new 3ds and haven't noticed any slow down at all but in all reviews I have seen when the game first came out say frame rate suffers a bit, but this would be on old 3ds so do all games run better on the new consoles?
Monster Hunter is a series I want to like but I can never get into it.
@sandman89 You're probably just not paying too much attention to the framerate. Only games that were designed to take advantage of the New 3DS's CPU get a performance boost, hence, DKCR shouldn't be getting an increase in FPS (I haven't played too much DKCR on my New 3DS but from what little I've played, it seems to run identically to when I played it on my original 3DS).
The game doesn't have very many framerate drops either way — what people were complaining about the most was that it was 30fps instead of 60fps like in the Wii version.
@Mr_Zurkon I can understand your position. I love it and buy the games in the series as soon as they release, but when I make recommendations to people I am careful. I tell them that if they get into it, the Monster Hunter series may provide them with many, many hours of some of the best action gaming around.
Ive known all of this for over a year now.
There's a 3DS home-brew app can run all the old 3DS games in 804mhz, using all 4 cores and memory on New 3DS.
Even with all that enabled, only a few old games get a boost in framerates. However, nearly every game load faster. MH3 for example load more than twice as fast!
I just got my Hyrule New 3DS XL and I finally get why my boyfriend needed a new one after playing MH4 too much....its buttons are crap compared to the firm ones my smaller New 3DS has. :/
Oh well, I can finally play MH and Majora's Mask on a bigger screen, as I'm supposed to.
Didn't Gaijin Hunter already do something similar?
I played it on the new 3ds xl and it looks terrible i guess they designed it to be looked at a distance when being played sadly
This video could have been 4 seconds long. Here's how:
Step 1: Get New 3DS on camera
2: Point at c-stick
3: Say, "C-stick"
4: End video
3DS: 30 FPS
New 3DS: 50 FPS
Higher quality textures, faster loading times, camera control via C-Stick, ability to post pics on Miiverse (or use Miiverse at all for that matter)...
There may only be a handful of New 3DS exclusives like Xenoblade, Binding of Isaac and a dozen SNES titles, but there's just as many if not more releases that substantially benefit from the hardware, making for an undeniably superior experience, and not just from the C Stick either.
@AyeHaley snap, I just got mine as well. The buttons do feel heaps better, and despite having Hyrule Warriors thrown in I've revisited MH4U, which has got its hooks in me yet again.
Impressive. While the gains aren't consistent (lack of GPU improvement outside of VRAM [hence the better textures] is likely the bottleneck), they're there. I wonder if all 3DS games will be able to take advantage of this one day, like the aforementioned homebrew allows. Still won't get one of these (gotta save up for a new laptop), but I'd definitely recommend spending the extra buck if you don't have a 3DS already.
@Mr_Zurkon It's a great series, maybe the best japanese series of all time, but I think there is a big lack of tutorial in the games to tell you how to play. There are a lot of things to know about the defensive gameplay and the games don't explain that at all. There is also a misunderstanding about what the game is. Lot of people think Monster Hunter are RPG when in fact they are pure action games based on skills and reflex. You can have the best stats in the game, if you haven't learnt how to use a weapon or how to deal with a monster you will be crushed. It's not about your character gaining experience it's about the player gaining experience.
I purchased the limited edition Monster Hunter New 3DS with the game pre installed. I've found the performance overal good, however even on the new 3DS it does slow down as the video states. However this game in such a little box!
Same as Xenoblade Chronicals wow!
Nintendo need to get some more New 3DS exclusives.
Good thing I have a New 3DS!
Am I the only one who can't tell a difference? I'm sure technically there is one but when I look at the two, I don't noticed anything. A bit like when I compare a max-res mp3 with a wav file - the facts state there's a difference but I don't hear it.
I was always curious about if these benefits translate to online play? Namely the faster loading times. You're only as strong as your weakest link, after all.
@TheDavyStar My money is on finally getting a capture card version of N3DS.
@Moon Online it does, for the exact reason you stated, the loading times.
Lots of love for the C nub here but MH4 is very comfortable with the Cirle Pad Pro. In fact, I have it on my 3DS XL at all times because it's generally more comfortable, even when not used.
