In this year of landmark anniversaries we can add Sonic the Hedgehog to the list, with SEGA's iconic mascot turning 25 in the Summer. The mascot has had his ups and downs but still remains an integral part of the gaming scene in the eyes of plenty of fans, and we can be sure that SEGA has some celebratory content on the way.
There's plenty of evidence for a main series game, too - there have been social media posts, teases and a snazzy celebratory logo (above) that have all allowed fans to dare to dream of a high quality new game in 2016. Now, ahead of a special panel event at SXSW on 19th March, we have an official tease of a 'special reveal'; hopefully SEGA knows better than to allow a hint like that and then reveal a new batch of online wallpapers.
Yuji Naka (Sonic Original Creator), Takashi Iizuka (Head of Sonic Team), Roger Smith (Voice of Sonic the Hedgehog), Mike Pollock (Voice of Dr. Eggman), Austin Keys (Sega), Aaron Webber (Sega)
25 years had to go fast, and here we are today wondering where it all went. Join the original creator of Sonic the Hedgehog, along with the amazing production heads responsible for bringing the franchise to life, for an in-depth analysis of where Sonic came from and where he's heading going forward. A special reveal will be made as part of the celebration for this anniversary milestone.
With the presentation just over a week away there's sure to be a little buzz around the series. We're planning to live stream the session in the hope that the special reveal lives up to expectations - if it's a trailer for the delayed Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice on 3DS we won't be amused...

Calling it: "Sonic Adventure 3: Sticker Star"
Enjoy!
I-I Don't want a New Sonic Boom game.
We all want a Good Sonic game/whatever it is there showing.
@WireWare YES!!
I knew they would do this when I saw they were gonna have a huge SEGA panel at SXSW. I am going to SXSW but sadly I don't think I can stay long enough to see the announcement live.
It's cool Yuji Naka will be there. Maybe they will let him direct the new Sonic game?
I say Sonic Adventure 3 or Sonic Generations 2 ! And both are cool in my book.
Why is it that the anniversary Sonic games are always the good ones? (I personally despise '06, but there are a lot of people who like it.) I'm keeping my fingers crossed for maybe a Generations 2.
Or even better, Sonic Battle 2. Sega, PLEASE.
Perhaps it's Sonic with some kind of online multiplayer element?
Since they removed the original genesis classics from the older systems, something tells me that there will be a good HD collection for the newer systems...or at least the addition of each game on the system's stores. The only other thing I can gather, is a new Sonic Generations 2 game or something that beats some of the other bad games. Hopefully something good! All in all, though, I see a new Sonic game coming to PS4 and XONE and something else coming to Wii U. If 3DS is getting Sonic Boom 2, then they're the only other 3 systems I see something new coming to.
@yuwarite Yes, Please! Do this Sega! even, if you don't go to this Website. still, Do this idea!
Since a lot of misinformation tends to be spread amongst the Sonic community for a variety of reasons, I think I should bring up that Aaron Webber (who runs @sonic_hedgehog, and is appearing at the panel) has said on the Sonic facebook page that there are no plans to announce a new game at the SXSW panel.

Why cant they just make a new classic sonic game, played sonic 1-3 and knuckles, then he went down hill, poor sonic
I'm hoping for a 3D Sonic game that is the Genesis games completely re-done, I think that would be pretty cool!
This could be really amazing or really really bad... And for Sonic's sake, I'm hoping it's amazing.
What I want is a new 3D game, with no gimmicks, like Adventure 2, Unleashed's Day Stages, or Generations.
Let's just hope it's something good...
@Shoyruken "I personally despise '06, but there are a lot of people who like it."
...You sure about that?
@Yorumi Looks like a nice game. It has that classic 16-bit Sonic vibe, alright. And then some...
It wouldn't surprise me if they simply remade Sonic 1 with the Sonic Generations engine. Kinda seems like an easy project to celebrate his history and its a shoe-in for easy sales.
@JLPick They only removed them from digital stores in Japan as far as I'm aware. I've seen them on PSN, XBLA, and the Wii Shop Channel recently. They even added most of them as backwards-compatible on the One.
Not a game. The reveal will probably be a trailer for the new movie.
@IceClimbers Darn, I was checking the responses to see if someone else had already said it.
But yeah, that seems most likely right now if it's not a game.
Would be great to have some more Sonic Adventure.
Is that sonic movie still coming out? Maybe it'll be a terrible teaser trailer for that....
Edit: Well I see other people had the same idea
@NintendoFan64 Umm, yeah. I'm sure. Go on Youtube and forums. If you can avoid the obvious trolls, you'll find a lot people who think it's the best Sonic game.
Can we just get another Rush game?! Rush Adventure is my favorite Sonic game and one of my favorite games of all time.
Grabs popcorn and waits for the Adventure 2 and Generations fans
Yuji Naka and Sonic Team come together to announce Sonic and SEGA All-Stars Fishing Resort. Day One.
Though really I'd just kill for a Burning Rangers sequel/HD remaster.
@NintendoFan64 I can verify that there are many Sonic fans who liked that game. As for why, I can't definitively tell you. Some like the story, others think the gameplay is fun. They like the game for the same reasons that we like other games.
As for me, I think it is one of the worst Sonic games released but I think it had potential. I would love to playthrough the game if it were released on PC because Modders would fix all if not the majority of issues in the game. Would it be considered good? I don't know, I didn't find the Adventure games amazing, but I would like to play it regardless. That story though can burn up in a volcano. Its no use trying to save it.
It'll be Generations 2 I reckon.
I don't care what people want to believe, we all know Sonic '06 was originally called Sonic Adventure 3.
@NintendoFan64 I'm one of them, 06 had a lot of great points.
I absolutely dislike the recent gameplay mechanics; Sonic Colors/Generations/LW were dull and boring to me. 06 played like the Adventure/Heroes games. The story wasn't perfect but it was interesting, Colors/Generations/LW had the most atrocious storylines, corny joke after corny joke, no Super Sonic fight, need I say more? Sure
06 had a ton of content, an insane amount of playable characters for instance. It kept the action stages interesting. Also Crush 40.
After I finished Lost World I found no reason to go back and replay some levels, when in Sonic 06 I would replay the heck out of it.
Of course I hate all the unnecessary things 06 changed, like the realistic people design, the whole Elise thing could have been done without the romance, bugs, etc.
Sonic Jam for the Game.com is a bad Sonic game, 06 is just mediocre in my book.
Please don't be Generations 2. Sonic hasn't done enough since 2011 to deserve another Generations.
Here's my stupid idea for the day. Make a game in the style of Sonic Unleashed, with a mix of platforming and action. But instead of the werehog thing, just use a character like Knuckles for those parts. I only mention this because Unleashed sold better than any other Sonic since the 6th generation, crossovers excluded.
Can't wait to see what it is! Hoping for something modern Sonic related.
Plot of land for his burial most likely
@Shoyruken Alright. Glad you liked it.
@Knuckles @AlienX I was just surprised, really. The general opinion towards that game with most people is that it's an unGodly mess.
@yuwarite If it's multiplayerI hope to see a racing game similar to Sonic R or Rivals, or a new fighting game like Sonic Fighters or Battle.
What's the point? Its SEGA and we know how they treat their IP's. Sonic can be in dust for all we know.
I miss good ole Sonic...you know? The one who was about speed and platforming instead of the broken Boom?
@NintendoFan64 Yeah, I get your point. In my opinion, the only thing good that came out of '06 was the soundtrack. But there's one thing we can all agree on: No one likes Sonic Boom.
I dunno why but I kinda got a feeling Sega will pull a few surprises regarding this (good ones) given how much time they're spending on Sonic Boom Fire & Ice given Boom's reception, along with the retail release of 3d classics collections next month & Sonics inclusion in that.
I'd personally love to see a Sonic game using Sega's own take on the Ubi Art engine, something similar to Rayman Origins with tons of levels, snappy fluid movement, boss battles, characters to unlock & play as etc. Looking forward to the reveal anyway.
Big the Cat to be playable in Mario+Sonic Rio Olympic Games...
Set expectations to 0.00001
@Shoyruken From what I've heard, Boom didn't even get the soundtrack right, and if you're making a Sonic game and can't even get the soundtrack right, you've already f***ed up.
Super Sonic Galaxy NX exclusive
@NintendoFan64 Yeah, the soundtrack is just bad. It's nothing spectacular. At least the title theme is Ok.
Honestly, as long as you've got an amazing soundtrack, COMPLETED levels, and blinding speed, that's the perfect Sonic game.
It's at the Gaming Expo, so of course I'm going to be there. I'm pretty hyped for it, too.
Hope to see some of you guys there! I'll be wearing a Classic Sonic t-shirt that says "old school" on it.
How safely can you say it's not another Sonic Boom?
They will also tell us the answer about hints from those Sonic social media posts in that event. It could be like this:
https://board.sonicstadium.org/topic/20656-detective-ssmb-the-case-of-the-sonic-25th-anniversary-read-line-1-of-op/?page=77#comment-1017941
The answer could be July 22, 2016.
I just hope the original staff joins Sega to make the new Sonic games! That's the only way we're not getting another disappointment.
I'm not holding my breathe. I haven't played a real Sonic game in like ten years. I remember trying an RPG one and getting mad because I waisted $30 on it. The racing game does not count. This whole series has lost its focus. They are in the lost world and cannot get out.
Whatever it is how bout tossing out a huge compilation disc as well? Sonic 1,2,3 knuckles, sonic cd, knuckles chaotix, sonic spinball, sonic 3D blast, sonic adventure 1&2, sonic generations, sonic colors, sonic heroes etc!! Would be day 1 for me boys!!!
Sonic 3 was the last great Sonic game.
The rest have been a mixed bag ever since. Sonic Adventure 1+2 are crap and as overrated, Sonic 06 and Sonic Boom make me sick.
I would love to visit the studio who created Sonic Boom on Wii U and vomit into their mouths.
I would also love to visit the talentless Sonic Boom character designers and wrap bandages all around them just to prove that their designs don't work.
Since it is being revealed soon, probably means it won't be a high budget NX launch title.
I'm hoping for a sonic maker game, after the success of Mario maker why wouldn't Sega copy it?
@ReshaSong If it's 2D, the online could be 2-8 players, and you basically do typical Sonic levels but race against each other for fastest time. There could also be online co-op, battle and score attack modes as well.
They could do random generated levels and Mario Maker style user created levels to keep the experience fresh.
@Maxtiis And he DEFINITELY isn't just saying that to try and kill hype so it's actually exciting when a game is revealed.
I mean, he could be telling the truth, but he could also be lying for the sake of having an actual surprise later.
I don't get why people always ask for Sonic Adventure 3. Sonic Adventure 3 already exists, they just called it Sonic The Hedgehog instead (and we all call it Sonic 06). It may be the worst Sonic game of all time (no, Sonic Boom is not worse, Sonic Boom is a spinoff that doesn't even count in the discussion of worst actual Sonic games), but just look at it. It has all the same terrible elements that didn't work in Sonic Adventure: run around the towns doing mundane things between levels instead of getting to just play the next level. An incredibly poorly written plot. Playing awful levels as awful characters.
Not only that, but Sonic Adventure 4 exists too. They just called it Sonic Unleashed. And all the "Adventure" elements in that game were terrible too.
Quite frankly, Sonic Adventure as a game structure isn't very good. I don't want running around boring overworlds, talking to boring people, wandering around trying to find the next game part of the game. It was awful in Sonic Adventure, it was awful in Sonic Advance 3 (that didn't have the people, but it was still just as awful looking for the next level entrance), it was awful in '06, it was awful in Unleashed. It was even awful in Generations when you had to navigate the dumb mazes to find the extra bosses and levels scattered around. You know what games did a good job? Colors and Lost World. Just a simple map screen so you can pick a stage and get back to playing a Sonic the Hedgehog game, which is what I want when I buy a Sonic game. I do not want some crap RPG town to wander around in.
Sonic Adventure as a game idea is free to stay dead. It only takes away from the experience. Brings it down. Makes the game worse. I didn't like Sonic Adventure 2 at all for different reasons, but I can give it credit for not having stupid towns to wander around in looking for levels. It just goes "okay you have to watch this bad cutscene but then BAM here is the next level". It doesn't make you wander around to find a powerup so you can get some key and then carry that key across an empty city to a train station and then carry the key some more across an empty jungle and then slowly float into a key hole which opens a door and then FINALLY you can play the game again.
@NintendoFan64 Yeah. I've seen LPs of it on YouTube where people complain because the person playing isn't good at it.
Complaining that the person playing a broken unfinished mess that's more like a giant glitch that sometimes works than an actual game is not doing it well at it.
And then they insist that the game is really good if you play it for yourself instead of watching videos where the person playing is doing poorly and trying to break the game on purpose.
My favorite is the "this could have been a good game if they finished it!" crowd. Yeah, it could have (plot would have still been terrible, and the town aspect would have still been terrible, but maybe the gameplay could have been good). But they didn't finish it, and it's not a good game. So get over it already.
That and "oh the music is really good!" Yeah, it is. I'll listen to the soundtrack instead of playing the game because the game is atrocious. A good soundtrack does not redeem a bad game, because a good soundtrack can be better experienced without the bad game.
Sonic boom ported to PC please, i want a giggle.
I think it would be awesome if tgey did like they did in 2006: Do a rebrand, a game simply titled Sonic the hedghog and make a new game with a dark story to it like they did with Sonic 2006...All they have to do is ensure that UNLIKE Sonic 2006, this game is actually playable and not the worst game the series has ever made...
I have more of a soft spot for the 3D Sonic Stages, I adored Sonic Generations modern Sonic Stages, they worked perfectly. I grew up on 2D Sonic, but the speed on the 3D levels was always more appealing to me. It's needs to be Sonic Generations 2, it will be the best of both worlds and it will cater to both fans! MAKE IT HAPPEN SEGA!
@yuwarite That sound like it would be fun. ^^
Wouldn't mind a generations sequel with more playable characters.
Sonic generations 2 please!
