Pokkén Tournament is now surprisingly close with around a month to go to its 18th March arrival on Wii U. The move from arcades to the home console has been long anticipated, along with the hope that it'll deliver a full-on fighting game experience for Pokémon fans.
Though some basic modes and details were announced earlier this year, some more promising information has now been confirmed - especially for those looking for a decent amount of offline single-player content.
Exclusive to the Wii U version is the Ferrum League, which sounds rather like a standard solo mode played to unlock more Support Pokémon and arenas. Taking place in the Ferrum region (obviously) it has four ranks to clear - Green League, Blue League, Red League and Chrome League - which no doubt ramp up in difficulty. You can customise your Trainer character and will come up against the likes of Travis, Keith and Erin.
More areas and modes have also been detailed:
- Practice Mode - 'Test your skills'
- Free Training - Useful for practicing under no pressure
- Combo Dojo - This area helps you learn combos for each 'mon
- My Town - Customise your character's appearance using the in-game currency, PokéGold
Beyond all of this, there are apparently no current plans to release more fighters or stages as DLC.
Finally, three new Support Pokémon sets have been confirmed - Cubone & Diglett, Magneton & Quagsire and Espeon & Umbreon.
Do you like the sound of Pokkén Tournament so far, and do you feel tempted to pick it up?

These were the modes I was hoping for. This game seems like a ramped up version of Pokemon Battle Revolution. This is shaping up to be a true Smash alternative ... For Pokemon fans that is!
This game a must buy in my book and has been for a while.
Big fan of Tekken, never played any Pokemon game before, so this is a day 1 for me.
Aw, no DLC planned. Sure hope this game does well enough for sequels. We need a bigger roster - this one is a little bit small tbh.
Already preordered it. Would rather play Uncharted 4 during Easter break but that's out of the question.
@IDH Oh don't remind me of the horrendous disappointment that was Pokémon Battle Revolution... To think that I paid the full $50 just so I can see Pokémons in 3D... (literally, that was all the game had to offer) =.=
Pokken actually looks like a decent fighting game of its own (if EVO is adapting it, means it must be somewhat competitive at least) so I will be getting it and hopefully it's as awesome as most media is making it out to be.
I'll definitely pick it up, but I would still like to see some new stuff. Maybe some new fighters... I'd really like to see a Bug-type Pokémon, for example. Also, something like Smash's Trophies, or just anything collectible and interesting would be awesome.
Maybe even a mode where you can link it up with your 3DS to play normal Pokémon battles on the big screen, like you could do in the Stadium games, Colosseum, XD, and Battle Revolution? I'm sure it won't happen, but I'd still love to see it.
Can't wait, love Tekken and Pokemon, and just can't get into Smash Bros.
This is the fighting game I have been looking for.
@japongt To be fair, you could get some really rare items from it, and had a decent online mode (as it was the only way you could battle random people back then, if I remember correctly), but sure, compared to previous games, especially Stadium 2, it was really bad in almost every way.
I'll definitely get it, but probably around April or May. I'll be way too busy next month with Twilight Princess HD, FE Fates and Street Fighter V.
Just fyi, Pokken Tournament is called Pokemon Tekken in germany.
@japongt Did exactly the same thing ( all be it a t a cheaper price ) but as you say Pokkén brings with it a lot of hope and evolution ( pun intended ) to the Pokemon series. This is why I love my Wii U.
I will probably buy it, but I can't help but be suspicious of the lack of promotion for a big Pokemon fighting game on the Wii U. It's sort of been covertly slipped between Twilight Princess (a remastering of an old game with lots of online press), and a delayed Starfox game. I wonder why we don't get a different game in each of March, April, and May when there doesn't seem to be much going on afterwards. I wonder if the lacklustre reviews of the arcade game have something to do with it?
I really like the look of Pokken but am waiting to see what the reviews say. Want the game to be great but I think I'll buy if it scores 7 or higher.
Good to know it has at least some modes in addition to basic fighting mode. I was almost concerned this game would turn out to be a very small game.
Still not interested in this game, though.
@zip I know and I absolutely hate it! I already tolerate translating english names into other languages but this is just non-sensical! It just confuses everybody when I talk bout Pokken and the guy at GameStop talks about Pokémon Tekken. And I refuse to call it like that! Oh, I could rant about it for hours! Not to the point of importing an australian copy but still.
@ricklongo Agreed. Releasing this in the same month as TPHD wasn't a good idea.
This game is looking awesome and gorgeous! As long as there's enough to keep me entertained no dlc won't bother me too much. However if there were dlc I'd definitely get it! On a side note I've warmed up to the new site quite a bit the only thing that feels weird to me is that I have to load comments not sure why it just kinda bugs me :-/
Practice Mode - 'Test your skills' Free Training - Useful for practicing under no pressure. Isn't that the same thing? And combo dojo? They couldn't add that in practice mode?
diffidently have plans, to buy this next month!
I hope it has a decent ranking system as opposed to Smash's convoluted "Global Smash Power" that really means nothing. I have no idea what rank system Tekken has, but hopefully if it's good Namco incorporated it.
"No planned DLC"
That's exactly what they said about SSB, and we all know how that turned out.
Glad to see some more modes, I have a hard time fighting for no reason. My son and I just started playing our first One Piece game, Unlimited World Red, and there is so much to do in there. Not quite SSB, but I like 3D fighting much better than 2D. There is also a light JRPG story mode that I'm really enjoying, my kid is all about Arena battles. So it's good to see Pokken getting some modes.
Also, doesn't "no DLC" go against amiibo cards working in the game? Why ship it with a dark Mewtwo card if you don't have plans for more?
Practice, training, and learning combos? That sounds like 1 game mode to me. Splitting it up into 3 separate modes sounds more troubling than reassuring.
@rjejr Dark Mewtwo is supposed to be unlockable in game, is it not? I was under the impression that it was just a form of an easy unlock for the character. Either way, I too am skeptical of the lack of DLC planned. I'd be willing to bet there already is a plan, and that plan is to make DLC if the game is successful.
@Yorumi I may just be used to games in which it is not. I don't play a lot of fighting games, but for the ones I do, you can pull up a command and combo list during training to practice executing combos. Bayonetta isn't a fighting game, but I'm pretty sure it too has a combo list on the side of the screen during practice mode.
@IDH Eh? It's nothing like Battle Revolution
@GoldenGamer88 Why Australia? Import one from another European country.
Ugh I'm torn between this and twilight princes..... although I'm starting to lean towards this.
Sounds good I am really looking forward too this game.
@Serebii The premise is similar with 3D Pokemon characters, trainers and tutorials. Obviously it is a much needed HD arcade injection that improves the series and makes the future of Pokemon on home console look very bright.
@GoldenGamer88
This.
We all know a fighting game series starts off with small rosters: first Smash game had only 8-to-12 characters, Street Fighter II didn't feature many more characters, Soul Edge started off with thirteen, and so on.
Now Smash features more than 50 playable characters, let's not get started with the Street Fighter IV roster, and the latest Soul Calibur features a similarly impressive amount of fighters.
Pokkén, on the other hand, as a franchise it's just beginning. Here's hoping we'll still see some surprises after the game's release, if only fighters absent in pre-release material instead of DLC.
Already sold on the game so definitely picking this up day one. Really liking the sound of the extra modes.
Certainly wouldn't say no to a portable version later down the line for the 3ds either.
At $30 I'd buy it day one. But right now I'm thinking I'll just rent it once or twice. The game looks cool but fighting games don't keep me entertained long enough to justify the same price as a big adventure game.
@IDH Not really. PBR was more a main series tie in. This is completely unique and separate.
@Octane Lol, forgot that option. Was a bit distracted with other stuff when I wrote that comment so I didn't think of that xD
@rjejr Because the amiibo card is a early unlock of S.Mewtwo.
@MrGawain Ninteno doesn't really promote pokemon very often as it doesn't need promotion. If anyone promotes it it's the pokemon company. Nintendo didn't announce gen 6, Pokemon just threw a trailer up out of nowhere.
So don't think this is sus because Nintendo never really advertises Pokémon.
@Yorumi But Tekken doesn't even have a separate mode for combo's.
Pretty weird choice but doesn't really mean much in the end imo.
...When are we getting this gain?
Not enough fighters. I was expecting at least 20. Disappointing.
@Megumi March 18!
@Octane Thought that was the Japanese date, I haven't been keeping up with this game much. xD
@Yorumi That's 16 including Pikachu Libre and Shadow mewtwo. So really 14.
@Yorumi Don't know about Shadow Mewtwo, but Pikachu Libre has different animations as well. They are both Pikachu, but it's not a lazy rip-off, Pikachu Libre was probably just as much work as any other fighter.
Still, I'd like to see a couple more fighters.
@zip that's interesting but then again, I will hang on to every word of anyone with a Gin avatar...
Annnyways, really looking forward to the single player mode now, hoping it will be a tad meatier than the average arcade mode
Before anyone jumps to conclusions, remember that...
1. They said there was no DLC "currently planned" for Smash 4 as well before it was released.
2. It's not a secret that claiming there is pay DLC being developed for a game before it's released is bad publicity, even if it's actually being done.
I'll wait to get this rather than get it day one, but that spread of modes does look quite good- I'll be hitting up Combo Dojo first thing. My only gripe with this game is that none of my favorites are playable- and here I thought Greninja at least was a shoe-in! Ah well, can't put in everyone. Maybe they're not done announcing characters, but the fact they already have to say no more will come by DLC (of course, this was said about Smash...) may imply they're done announcing all that's planned. I will say I love the newly announced support mon though- Quagsire and Umbreon/Espeon are well-liked Pokémon to me and I'll keep their options in mind.
@Yorumi I haven't seen the character selection screen yet, but that would be good news. I know it's a new fighting game, but a Pokémon fighting game lends itself so much better to more characters than Smash, considering there are 700+ Pokémon. I was hoping to see around 25-30, but I guess I have to settle for 20 then.
Still hoping for Hitmonlee or chan.
I'm keen
I have a thought on the smaller roster. No doubt we'd all like to see more Pokemon but let's go back and look at another fighter that made its debut on the N64. Smash started with a small roster and now features a huge one including non-Nintendo characters. I have no doubt that if Pokken Tournament does well that we'll see future installments with ever increasing rosters. I'll be getting my copy on day one.
This one is on my birthday list! A bit more info, especially some online details, and this will be a definite winner (for me anyway!)
The game looks good, but I think the fighter list is too small. I assumed announcing a Shadow Mewtwo Amiibo card meant we had more cards to look forward to in the future. Revealing no DLC makes me rethink purchasing this or maybe just waiting for something else.
@TwilightOniAngel It does sound confusing, but I think Practice Mode might be a free battle mode where you just pick characters, diffuculty, and a stage to have a single battle against the CPU.
Hopefully these built-in combos have more lenient timing like in Dead or Alive, Naruto, or DBZ fighters rather than the extremely strict timing found in Injustice, Street Fighter, or Tekken. Something's wrong with the system when the average player can't execute basic combos on half of their attempts.
Super looking forward to this. Not a Pokemon player (think it is a great concept though), but I do like fighters and this one is unique from a GREAT developer at these games. I do wish there was some form of progression (maybe like Soul CaliburII story section, etc.). I also rarely buy new retail games at full price.... Day one for me, maybe even a pre-order if I can find a good online deal in the USA.
