We recently shared a list of exciting Wii U and 3DS games to play in the first quarter of 2016, which was admittedly packed with portable titles. If you like cross-IP sport games then there's now another one to consider - Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games is coming to North America on 18th March.
Well, the 3DS version is, anyway. Despite a Wii U version also being confirmed in 2015, so far mentions of the game in Japan and now North America have only referred to the portable version. Also, Nintendo of Europe hasn't - at the time of writing - confirmed its own release date.
Perhaps the Wii U version will roll around later in the year nearer the actual event, or Nintendo will pretend it was never announced. In any case, are you tempted by this one on 3DS? You can see a Japanese showcase video below to help you decide.

I'll be holding out for the Wii U version if it still exists. I've enjoyed playing the console versions at parties since the Vancouver game. That and Bejing was the only decent handheld one. I'm actually surprised Rio is getting a handheld version at all since I think Sochi skipped the 3ds.
Oh Nintendo...
So they are releasing the "summer" Olympic game in the "winter"? I guess Rio being so close to the equator has them confused which season it is down there.
So what's the word for when a game gets kicked off of a system - in this case Wii U - onto a future system - NX? Can it still be considered a "port" if the game never comes out on the previous system? May be an important word to know over the next few months.
Edit - FYI it will be winter in Rio during the Olympics in August in case I piqued anyone's interest.
Nintendo sure is filling up the first half of the year regarding 3DS. I believe the Wii U version was scheduled for August initially.
I'll buy the Console version, whether that's Wii U or not..
I will go ahead and pre-order the NX version for I will have a great launch title next to 30 Great Family Games NX Edition.
Mario's face looks so... non-kid-friendly. I've never seen such an angry-looking Italian man! You can even see sweat on the side of his nose!
@LetsGoChamp yeah I have a feeling there's going to be an NX version for NX launch day as well
Coming from their Facebook page...

Mario and Sonic are back for another round of intense competition in Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, launching for Nintendo 3DS on 3/18 and Wii U later this year!
Awwww so Sweet, it's on the Date of my Birthday
will be getting this game. I loved the London game on the 3DS.
I can't believe I'm saying this: Compared to the previous games, this one I am actually interested in. It ain't a D1B for me, though, and I am wondering what the Wii U version would bring to the table.
@rjejr Is Nintendo even releasing the game in Rio? It's summer in the major regions during August, and it's still considered the summer Olympics.
So far the biggest release schedule screw up is Ratchet & Clank. That poor game. Pray that the movie is enough to make the younger crowd interested in the game over Uncharted. Also pray that nostalgia is stronger than Uncharted and Dark Souls hype for the older crowd.
The last one on Wii U looked fun, but I was never driven to buy it.
Wouldn't surprise me if there is no Wii U version, especially if Nintendo is working on bringing out the NX by the end of this year.
Same thing happened with the 2012 games on the 3DS which came out first, as I have a Wii U in my room I have no interest for the console version I tend to have more fun with the portable version as the games are more interesting and fun to play in my opinion! I also like the story mode as it's the closest we will get to a real crossover unfortunately. Besides the stories tend to be rater whitty and make me smile!
Can't wait! Day one for me!
I think the WiiU version is still coming. They just got their work cut out making characters fit in all events. Unlike the 3DS one where each character besides Mario, Sonic and the miis are restricted.
If this one skips the Wii U, reality will really set in with me that the Wii U is done. I continue to hold out hope that the Wii U will not be replaced until Christmas 2017 because there are so many great games in its puny library, and I would really love a few more . . . especially you, Zelda.
@bluedogrulez Why wouldn't the Wii U version release? Here's NoA's page for the Wii U version:
http://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/mario-and-sonic-at-the-rio-2016-olympic-games-wii-u
This just in, no word on a wii u game!! Automatically means it's coming to a console no one knows!!!
@IceClimbers "screw up is Ratchet & Clank"
I saw you comment over on PS. R&C couldn't really be helped though as it releases when the movie does. Moving Uncharted 4 to 2 weeks later wasn't very nice on Naughty Dogs part though, or Sony's. Though I still think the 2 weeks in between and the $40 price means R&C can sell enough copies before U4 releases. At least R&C comes out first, after would have been worse timing. I don't follow Dark Souls at all, I only know those games are difficult, so maybe those players could use R&C as a light diversion to catch their breath?
2016 does seem to be the PS4's year, even if NX does release as a home console this year it probably won't be a factor until the holidays. If then.
@Barbiegurl777 Dragon Quest 7 and 8? Bravely Default 2?
I am actually surprised at how many great RPGs we're getting this year ^_^
Wii U version's coming, its just likely to be coming in Autumn/Fall.
Nintendo tweeted the Wii U version is coming later this year. The actual Games are in August so maybe this would release as a tie in
@rjejr Yeah, R&C definitely got put into a rough spot. Early May would have been a better time to delay Uncharted to - I don't think there's anything coming in that period. The $40 price certainly helps the game though. Will be interesting to see how well the movie does when Civil War comes out like a week or so after. Opening weekend shouldn't be so bad though.
The good thing here is that both the game and the movie should have a controlled budget, unlike Uncharted and Civil War, which will both have ridiculously higher budgets.
@Mega719 Source?
@IAmDeclanJay that would be terrible timing. Why bother?
@IceClimbers um, I may have hit Report instead of Reply by accident, so if the higher ups get on you just send them my way.
I'm unsure about the mass appeal of a R&C movie. I know we all want to see it, but I've played every game and have always liked them. But it isn't a Pixar movie, or Dreamworks, so I don't know about the turnout. I don't really see Civil War being an issue, and Angry Birds is 3 weeks later. It's Dory's year though, so R&C won't be getting any awards.
@LetsGoChamp @Tasuki @WebHead @rjejr
Nah, console games have a longer development time, especially if all the new characters are available in the main game, it's going to be a massive amount of animating, so I don't think it's coming to NX. I hope the Wii U version of M&S Rio 2016 will be released before Rio 2016 (or UEFA Euro 2016).
@rjejr Noted.
Yeah, Finding Dory will definitely be the animated movie of the year. Moana I'm sure will get plenty of attention if Frozen is anything to go by. Hopefully the amount of attention it gets is in between Tangled and Frozen.
R&C at least gets the benefit of being one of the first animated movies of the summer blockbuster period, event though it comes out in April. It's like Black Friday - it starts earlier every year.
I should also note that by the time R&C hits, Zootopia (the preview was actually pretty funny) will be out and old news by then, so there's not really any animated movies to compete with when it releases.
@IceClimbers I really did not like that Zootopia DMV trailer before Star Wars, but my wife and kids both enjoyed it, so probably just me being a cranky old man. I am surprised no Rio 3 this year. The 2nd was a bit too tree huggy but I liked the first.
@GreninJovan Well it may take a long time to make home console games, but that should just give them more time to promote it. Pretending it doens't exist is not a good way to promote any game, home, handheld or mobile.
@bluedogrulez

...anyways
i'm surprised that it's coming earlier then expect, and Wii U version does not have release date yet. i wonder if there holding back during summer? (i doubt it would be fall).
I was so pumped for the Wii U version coming out in the beginning of the year, as combining my two big obsessions, Nintendo and Rugby Union (even if Sevens) is going to be amazing.
Now it will have to fight it out with the two Wii U Zelda's coming out
PS: EA's laughable attempts at Rugby games are jokes.... so I was really looking forward to a fun game title with a Rugby game... and I'm Nintendo bias anyway!!
I am smelling that the this game will be better than the whole game of Mario Tennis Super Smash - at least the game will not have big mushroom to enlarge a character to the entire screen and block the view of the ball.
@rjejr Well, there's no Rio 3, but there is an Ice Age 5 coming in July.
This is the first time that Nintendo and SEGA are releasing the series with the event happening at the same time.
But, I can guarantee that its going to be a poorly made game cause its SEGA...what do you expect? If this game turns out well and sells well.....I'll be damned and I'll be glad that I am because the people who want to play this game can feel better for playing a quality game.
Anyone else remember the hype for a Mario and sonic game, just to see the teaser of mario and sonic in a race?
@IceClimbers Ice Age 5 is one of those movies that makes me glad I have kids b/c I'd feel really stupid watching it alone as a 50 year old man. Last one was getting a bit repetitive but they're still good for a laugh.
So is the Wii U version going to be download only, because on NOA website is only showing the eshop version coming soon just like they did with fatal frame maiden of black water I really would like to play FFMOBW but I am not going to spend that kind of money on a digital download only game.
@AyeHaley Barbiegurl777 doesn't like RPGs, that's what she meant.
