Tabletop gaming is a big part of broader gaming culture, now often found in its own areas at expos and events. Naturally there can be crossovers, too, with video game franchises being shifted to tabletops and vice-versa; this natural mix seems to have been a source of inspiration for one keen BattleCON fan.
BattleCON seems to be a fairly popular series of card-based games, with variations seemingly finding funding almost at will through Kickstarter campaigns. Now, in a lower key effort than some big-budget versions, an eager fan has begun work on a Smash Bros. amiibo-driven version of the game. The key is, admittedly, in print-them-yourself cards and a board, with the amiibo effectively acting as static figurines to represent the characters on the board. There's no NFC trickery here, just simple card-based gaming.
So far there are four characters - Bowser, Rosalina, Link, Mario - and "redesigned bases, a portable board, and some life trackers" available to download. Creator Aljo Martinez is sharing progress and sourcing support and ideas from the community over at boardgamegeek.com, so it'll be interesting to see how far it gets.
It's always nice to see fans finding creative ways to enjoy Nintendo characters, games and now amiibo. BattleCON is just another way to celebrate Smash Bros., which is no bad thing.

cool although I know about this few days ago
I have no idea of what this is.
Only 4 characters, though? How long do these actually take to make?
Just popping in to say that it makes me happy just to see Battlecon in the news at all. It's my favorite board game of all time; my friend and I are just as addicted to it as we are to Smash Bros. Wii U.
Battlecon is one of my favorites as well. I play a game or two every week. Really looking forward to the online beta so I can play more often.
I don't do print and play stuff, but this loks quite fancy.
@Rhydas
great comment. a board game perhaps? i mean, it's not rocket sience to figure that out.
Hopefully they add Palutena and Kirby later on. Looks like an interesting and fun use of Amiibo
@Legromancer You say that but it looks more like a card game and you know it. Thanks for clearing up nothing, genius.
Looks cool. Would be nice to see it made for the public, but the more than likely scenario is the good ol' "Cease and desist" from Nintendo.
@Legromancer @Rhydas
Why bicker about this? I'm sure you found this site through a web browser, right? Do you all know about Google?
