Nintendo had a sizeable presence at Gamescom last week, and it was certainly pleasing to see a dedicated 'Nindies' section showing off upcoming Wii U and 3DS eShop releases.
Soul Axiom from Wales Interactive was on the booth - some Wii U eShop aficionados will remember the studio's previous release on the system, Master Reboot. There are visual similarities between the titles, but Soul Axiom has an intriguing new setting and plot.
A fresh trailer for the title has been released, and does a good job of highlighting the creative direction this one has taken. Due out this year, you can also see our initial impressions from the E3 Nindies@Home build.

This game has a lot of potential but from the demo, some of the graphics looked bland and amateur and that end cutscene was a joke.
Nice trailer. Will get if the price is right.
@Hero-of-WiiU well to be fair the dev stated that it was in beta and not finished.
wasn't impressed with the Nindies at home beta, and this trailer doesn't improve my impressions much
The demo didn't do that much for me, but I am playing Master Reboot currently. Not a bad game, but I don't think I'll expect the world from Soul Axiom either.
My 8 year old sun asked me to get the game after playing the demo. He thought it was great. I don´t see it, but maybe its like the way I liked "The sentinel" back in the days of yore.
The nindies demo did nothing for me,It was just bland.
Looks like poor mans bio shock
@rob955 it probably is seeing as how bioshock was made by a huge team with big money backing and this was made independently by a small studio
I read the title as Axiom Verge and now I'm sad.
After trying the E3 demo the only real problem I had with the game was the less than stellar framerate. Smooth that out and I will keep an eye on this one.
Ok @faint
This game looks nuts.
I played Master Reboot last year and really enjoyed it. The graphics aren't going to blow anyone away but I actually kinda liked the quirky look to them. I'd much rather an interesting world instead of a super realistic one. I'm definitely going to pick this up when it comes out. I know it won't be the best game I'll ever play but I'm confident I'll enjoy playing it regardless.
The Demo was bad to be honest. Built no hype for me. But I can't judge the final product based on that. Without further ado, it still looks rather promising and intriguing nonetheless.
I really enjoyed Master Reboot and I didnt think the Nindies demo was that bad. Ive played a few Betas in the past so I wasnt put off by a few things in the demo like framerate because im confident that they will be sorted by its final release. I quite like the art style and dont really see it as bland, the music is fantastic just as it was in Reboot and I think it really helps the game. I suppose its a niche that Wales Interactive fits, and mabey its because im getting old, but I really like these first person puzzle games with a strong myster story behind them. Im not really one for flashy FPS.
What faint, FlashmanHarry and Raptor78 say
It's a first person mystery adventure (just like Master Reboot). It's about solving puzzles, exploring new worlds, an immersive story and atmosphere, a unique artsy style... and it's not about realistic graphics and fastpaced action.
In games like this I can forgive a jumpy framerate as you can go slow with it anyway. And they're working on that issue for sure, it was just a demo of a beta. Let's not forget it's a small indie studio that made this game, and not a 200 man team with the help of a veteran publisher with 30 years of experience. Those 3D graphics are a great effort for such a small studio, and since it's much harder work than any 2D game, cut them devs some slack, especially if you haven't played Master Reboot and don't know what you're talking about.
I think it's great that a few indie devs put effort and resources into 3D worlds as we have plenty of 2D games already and lack some real 3D games at the moment.
Give this dev a chance, they don't even have money for the USK rating to release their games in Germany, and still they're producing costly games and sell them cheap and put them on sale regularly.
Loved the music and atmosphere in the demo, but the controls where just to weighted for me which I am sure will be fixed by the final release, however dont think I will purchase.
I liked master reboot, I think i'm going to like this too
I liked master reboot, I think i'm going to like this too
I like the art style. Will be interested.
I played the Nindies@home demo and although I tried, I coulnd't find out what this games is about or what it wants from me as a player. So I was kind of curious about the trailer, just to finally understand what this game is about. Unfortunately, the trailer doesn't really show much, the game still makes no sense to me and I probably won't buy it.
I understand that this is an indie developer with limited ressources, but when you're making a game, it's vital to make your ideas instantly clear to potential customers.
@shani: It's a mystery thriller puzzle adventure, a heavily underrepresented genre on a Nintendo. You aren't supposed to know what's going on. That's why you play the game. To find out.
It's comparable to classics like Myst and Shadowgate, where you're stranded in a strange place somewhere, not knowing where you come from, where you are, who you are, with focus on atmospheric environments.
Simply a game for curious oldschool adventurers pepped up with modern standards.
@SKTTR Ah okay, so that's why I felt left in the dark. I always thought it was the game's thought for not making the goals clear, but now I realize it's part of the game design. Thanks for clarifying that!
I know Myst from back in the days, but I haven't really played it, like most classic Point&Click-Adventures from that time.
