Splatoon's big update to version 2.0.0 means that we can now play custom games online with friends, allowing us to dictate map, game mode, and even the number of players. This means that the much-sought after possibility of 1v1 matches online in Nintendo's ink-em-up is finally a reality, and they're a massive improvement over the offline Battle Dojo.
Unfortunately because Splatoon is designed with teams in mind games can become one-sided or dull very rapidly, and so house rules have to be put in place in order to make the experience a fun and challenging one.
Check out the video below where we take you through the ins, outs, ups and downs of getting the most out of these unique matches.

Hrmm... interesting idea! Will have to give it a try!
What on earth is so bad about tenacity?! Since it's 1v1 the only time it's active is when you're dead.
It's a good thing we've VOICE CHAT to TALK to our opponent about what's allowed and what's not allowed. And most importantly that we can TALK over the match with our opponent to make sure we're both on the same page. What's that you say?...
@chardir Yes, I also don't understand that part. What good would Tenacity do in a one-player game?
So now all I need is 3 more Wii U's and 3 more copies of splatoon and another TV and I can play 4 player couch co-op!
Ah, you got to love all the blatant sarcasm.
This is unusable without some form of external communication. There's a perfectly good method possible within the game if Nintendo would just get with the times and allow VOICE CHAT.
@Sligeach They are aware of it and they have allowed Voice Chat before in other games, it's just for some reason they don't want Splatoon to have it.
Glad this now available in Splatoon. We have two Wii U's and two copies of the game so I will have to give this a try!
Just want to play OFFLINE with my friends in same room. What happens in a year when 70% of casual gamers have moved on? Hope this is changed
I think I'll stick with teamplay, but thanks for checking it out! Also @AlexOlney, if you should ever need someone again to play at late hours, I'm usually awake until morning (extreme night owl).
@Toadsfriend I don't think there are many casual players on Wii U. I a big part of those 10 million consoles out there probably represent the diehard Nintendo fans (otherwise it would be more than just 10 million).
@Sligeach Have you ever heard of Teamspeak?
So this is private battle mode, and for 1 vs. 1, you set the teams when only 2 people are in the room. (?)
Also, can you explain why tenacity is an unfair advantage? Seems like it would be just the opposite (for reasons stated by others above).
Thanks, and great vid, and you've got the best sign-on in the business!
I could see how Tenacity would be advantageous. If it was coded to only recognize when your team has "1 player active", it would continuously trigger that special. None of my friends have the game besides me, so I probably won't get to mess around with 1v1 though.
The rules are somewhat well thought-out, so I might actually try this soon. Tower Control isn't really my strong point, though, and certain loadouts (especially ones with Bubbler, Splash Wall, or Kraken) might still be too powerful for 1v1.
@Sligeach This is the reason Splatoon has no VC. One of the developers said himself that he tried voice chat on various games, and in almost all instances only rude people were heard constantly flinging profanity at each other, so his concern are perfectly reasonable. Blame the players, not the game. Get TS, it's miles better than the awful GamePad mic, anyway.
And if you want to set a game with somebody, Miiverse still allows posting, so try that.
@Kaze_Memaryu BREAKING NEWS: MIIVERSE UPDATE 3/15/2016 POSTING IS NOW BANNABLE DUE TO CONSISTENT MISUSE
I think that the whole thing about tenacity was sarcastic based on the summary at the end of the video...
@Kaze_Memaryu " Get TS, it's miles better than the awful GamePad mic, anyway." That's so true it isn't even funny. Like anyone who wants to play semi-competitively with friends or others wouldn't/shouldn't use the gamepad mic even if Splatoon had voice chat.
@Kaze_Memaryu "so his concern are perfectly reasonable"
Except for the part where they set up rooms for you to play in private w/ your friends. If you are worried about language in na room w/ your friends then you need new friends.
I'm all for no voice chat in normal mode, it's only 3 minutes and it's meant just to be a quick round of fun. In ranked battles I do think it's necessary if anybody is ever going to take this game seriously and/or play it competitively. You just shouldn't make a team based game that allows you to play w/ friends w/o allowing those friends to use voice chat. To me that makes no sense.
@rjejr I know, and I do agree that it should be enabled in private lobbies. But I also know that many young players accept friend requests blindly just to have more people in their list, even if they don't know anything about that other person, which might end up becoming an even bigger schock when one of those people suddenly showcases his top 10 ways to insult ones' mom over a lag-assisted kill.
@Kaze_Memaryu True, but I don't like punishing the majority of good people for the potential bad behaviour of a few. I understand that's Ntinedo policy, ban it or delete it at the first sign of trouble, but I don't agree w/ that philosophy. Parents and gamers have to take some responsibility for their actions. I'm even ok w/ making it off by default and needing to turn it on. After everything Microsoft is doing w/ Win 10 privacy I'm all for openess and clarity.
I still don't think turf war needs it, even though the majority of people probably do, it's not meant to be played like that, you can only straetgize so much in 3 minutes. Whenever I play some turf war after ranked I'm always surprised at just how fast it goes me. And how stress free. I've never gotten as upset losing turf war as losing a long lead in OT in ranked, those losses are the worst.
I think the main reason it doesn't have voice chat is because every online game has people from two or three different languages.
@rjejr Really, I agree with your viewpoint, but if that happened, it would end up turning into an enormously overbloated debate between the polite internet, the rude internet, and lazy parents who use modern media to keep their responsibility as low as possible. The internet's civilised part (or rather, the whole world) is powerless against the anarchy lurking around every corner, and bad things always garner more attention than positive news...
@MadAdam81 I agree. Since the time frame I have to play is usually at night in the US, I'm only ever in a room with a bunch of Japanese players--which I see other American players say its the same for them as well. Now if they had an update which would allow you to play within your own region...lol
@Sligeach yet you need to communicate outside of the game to get a private 1v1 set up any way... just saying.
My friend and I tested out all the modes in 1v1 yesterday.
The game of Tower Control was probably the most intense Splatoon match I've ever had.
I like the new update but...
Voice chat for private room please.
Simply allow voice chat in the lobby when creating teams, and have a swift 30 seconds, pre match voice session to talk team tactics. No voice chat mid match. No lag issues with that setup surely an it'll only add 30 seconds onto the 3 minute match timing.
@Sligeach and while we are using hyperbole, what universe do you and your friends live in that there is no way to communicate by voice unless there is an in-game method? Skype? Phone call?
I should add that it should be an option for approved kid accounts or adults to allow friends to speak to each other online at least. It sure would be convenient.
