While Super Smash Bros. updates often bring new content, they also tweak key attributes and moves for its many characters. Masahiro Sakurai and his team are perfectionists, after all, and no doubt continually monitor how characters are used and seek to improve their balancing.
A notable previous example was the 'nerfing' of Diddy Kong, and the folks over on Smashboards have been busy figuring out and highlighting the changes to the roster's abilities in this week's update to version 1.1.0. As it turns out, quite a lot of adjustments have been made.
Below is the table that's been compiled which shows the changes that have been picked up so far.
Do any of those tweaks stand out to you? Any that are welcome, or perhaps surprising? Have at it and debate them in the comments below.
With thanks to Ryan Millar for the heads up.

Dissappoints me that Nintendo can't tell us what they change. It's great the community are doing this, but if Ninten just took a little bit of time to display the changes, like they do in OTHER games (E.G. Splatoon) it woulda been cool.
This update's quite a bit smaller than the other ones in terms of tweaks. Most noticable, at least for me is DK having kill confirms with Cargo Throw now, like Brawl. As well as WF Trainer's Hitboxes finally getting fixed.
Villager balloon buff plz.
And yay for Shulk buffs.
Buff Samus for peet sake. Why say Samus was one of the strongest when she's so far below everyone?
@KO-Cub Samus is easily the worst in the game. She doesn't just need buffed, she needs fixed. They fixed WFT and Palutena, but they didn't fix Samus. I mean, look at this:
Yeah! Robin and Zelda buffs. I'm still surprised there was nothing for Samus. Why?
Always looking to make sure my buddy King Dedede doesn't get nerfed 😊
Reducion on Link? :/ he already kinda sucks. Well, rather, I suck with him.
Why did they buff Shiek's fair?
No tweaks to King Dedede because he is already the greatest.
The biggest thing I don't understand is why did they buff Luigi?
@IceClimbers Dammmmmmmmmn..... I didn't know Samus was so sh*tty in this game. They really need to fix this ASAP, I mean, all of her hitboxes are terrible.
They buffed Shulk.
Today is a good day.
Marth is getting a few steps closer to his glory days. His aerials just need to have smaller lag and bigger hitboxes.
@crzysortagamer its confusing but its actually a buff, it means there is LESS lag, and therefore the move is now quicker if you mess up.
@IceClimbers i see it as a nerf, fireballs have more lag which makes them more unsafe, downtilt does more knockback so cant combo as well, and fair damage is reduced (fair is one of his best moves)
As a Yoshi and DK main, im glad to see yoshi unchanged, and slightly glad of the DK dash attack buff, but i feel Ninty could reduce lag on his tilts that would be what he needs (up smash is largely useless) and also, if his ariels could be made safer on shield.
Great to see the marth buffs, although pretty much every marth player i know wants to see forward air or back air buffed, that would make him very viable. shulk buffs are great too, and nice to see diddy slightly buffed again, after being destroyed last patch. luigi nerf is good, but i feel the falcon nerf wasnt needed. Wii fit trainer and palutena finally fixed . shame about samus. also why does lucas need a buff?
Ive noticed most of the changes this patch are buffs, when last it was nerfs. anyway, very good in general.
@JakeOfAllTrades They didnt, they reduced damage, increased knockback (this is bad because fair could never kill, but now it cant combo into more fairs/ftilts) and they made it harder to get a sweetspot.
@DThrow_UAir Luigi was overall buffed. Top Smash players have agreed it's a buff.
@IceClimbers Awesome video.
@IceClimbers My friend is actually pretty dang good with Samus. That does look like some pretty awful hitbox detection though.
@ChandlerBing Why can't you just enjoy the game as it is instead of complaining a bit?
They had to have buffed DK's throw. It's really broken now.
@KO-Cub Your speaking my language !
Yes, Soon Marth shall rule the scene once more.
@IceClimbers This makes me sad being a Samus main its very true. So many times i have to kill with full blast or get a lucky spike.
Oh dear. How did people even find out such exact minute details, so soon?
Personally, I don't care much, and I doubt I'll even notice anything's changed, I only play Smash for fun.
@Artwark I absolutely love this game, I still have gripes with it, though most of the things done with the game post-release are pretty swell.
@IceClimbers Heh, I was wondering why I havent seen to much samus players online.
Wiifit trainer and robin has been buffed baby!.... and the marths.
Looks like Kirby was nerfed. No fair.
This must have taken a long time to make!
My boy Robin got buffed! Today is a good day.
As a side note, how on Earth to people find these stat changes so quickly, down to the percent, angle and even hitboxes? How??
Better
Nerf
Greninja
-_-
@VeeFlamesNL Kirby's forward throw is nerfed, but at least his inhale and jab is quicker.
I really really... REALLY wish Falcon's back air was not nerfed on its knockback... So many times it would have killed if it had its strength from before patch for me. Now his dair is really the only reliable kill move. His fair isn't reliable but of course very strong. I don't have many chances to pull it off. His smash attack to side and down are very predictable and a bit laggy so not the best options. His up smash is OK in my opinion because you can dash with it. Only tilt that can kill really is up tilt and you won't find yourself KO anyone with it often because it's too predictable. I don't think Falcon is high tier now, even his jab got nerfed.
They buffed up Luigi a top tier,but not my homie Pac-Man? What?
@IceClimbers This is the first time I see that...
Wow, indeed she needs to be fixed in some areas.
Though I don't agree that the super missile needs to be buffed. Its really easy to camp with Samus.
...Eh, dunno...don't care about the small stuff, really.
I main Zero Suit so I'm glad she's unaffected, Wish regular Samus got buffed though.
@uhhhhhhhh Dedede is definently my favorite. He just so good on recovery and mobility.
@IceClimbers Wow, that video was depressing. Ssmus is my main, and yet sometimes I feel like I can't pull anything off or knock someone off when their percentage is sky high. No flipping wonder
Samus has been my main since Melee, but I agree she just doesn't seem as good in this game. Though I'm glad that Robin and Little Mac were buffed, since they're some of my other mains.
@Gridatttack I love using Shulk, he's my best character, but mostly because Xenoblade is my All time favorite game so I use him the most
@leo13 I main Shulk too.
Though the odd thing is I never played the game (but I know what is it about, but I haven't had a chance to play it yet)
I mostly choose him because I like his playstyle, as well it has some similarities with Ike in Project M (In which he is my main there)
@Gridatttack ooh you really need to play it, I'm almost done I'm on the second to last boss. This game is amazing! You really need to get it and now that it's on 2 systems...
@Gridatttack
I play as Shulk to yet I haven't played his game either.
And I know everyone finds him annoying but I'm glad Sonic wasn't nerfed, you all shall remain "too slow"
Nice to know all my replays are borked now. Thanks Nintendo...
@leo13 Yes, IK. I watched the start of a LP and seems awesome.
I haven't gotten it because the game is too expensive on wii and I wont get a new 3ds anytime soon (And i even tried to download it, but the game is 8GB and I got feud up of the download losing connection, meaning I had to download all again :v )
@DiscoGentleman Love your pic!! You must love little Toad as much as me?? He is my all time favourite character
@Xamorus I kinda feel for anyone who plays Samus, because she honestly has no shot, regardless of how good the player is.
Let me put it this way, I once played a really good Samus player online in For Glory with Ike in the early days of Smash 4. The Samus player outplayed me with better stage control, better reads, and just being the better player.
But I won with Ike because of the simply fact that he could just tank her attacks and keep on going. Time and time again, I was hit by Smashes, Aerials, Charge Shots, and Super Missiles, and nothing this Samus player fired or tried would take a stock off.
Meanwhile, Ike was able to take advantage of Rage, and I wore this Samus player down, simply by virtue of taking her best shots while not being able to finish me off.
Let me put it this way, Samus' killing power is pathetic, and is just as bad as it was in Brawl. If she could just get improvements to her KO power, she could be a mid-tier character at the very least.
She has all the other tools she needs. Her damage racking game is very good, her mobility is great, she has good recovery options and weight, and boast great stage control.
The only thing she's lacking is KO power, and it holds her back.
Mii Swordsman can actually COMBO NOW. With lingering Chakram, you can go in with a dash, U Smash, U Attack, S Smash, S Attack, and the flying Chakram is super good for poking, and it no longer leaves you open!
Zelda being buffed a second time, just so much yay.
@Caryslan
But we all know how little Nintendo cares for Samus. Bad in Smash, no proper Metroid game, and the upcoming Metroid don't even include her, atleast not as a playable character. And the Amiibo they made look like a empty-hole shopping-window puppet.
@Cyber-BLP--
Someone has to do it if Nintendo doesn't bother.
@JakeOfAllTrades They didn't buff Sheik's fair.
@Nicolai Kirby's foward thrown can now combo into fair or up air. It's buffed.
@IceClimbers can you explain how he was buffed then, i dont get it.
Link needs bolder buffs so that he won't be as lacking against his bad match-ups.
Looks like they've made a few improvements to Charizard. Cool! Him and villager are my mains.
Buffed up Robin! Yes
Change Link and leave Toon Link alone? Fair Enough.
Glad Ness is largely unchanged, my best character. Love Zelda too, especially down throw into lightning kick >:3
@Konda Illuminati confirmed
Nothing for Game & Watch. Great.
@IceClimbers I agree, apart from the slightly terrifying notion of how unbeatable Afro would be if Samus were a good character
Bowser Jr. has been made even more powerful! BWA HA HA HA HA!
clears throat I mean...yay.
Funny how Mewtwo is a DLC character that one has to buy both console versions or pay extra money for, yet they're now among the worst (if not THE worst) fighters in the game. It's become apparant that his mechanics were glitchy and unfinished when he was thrown in at the last minute. Thus, Nintendo is now pioneering into the budding microtransaction field of... Pay to lose?
@DThrow_UAir The only thing really nerfed to Luigi is his fireball. His other changes are usually seen as buffs. Down tilt is faster. Up B is easier to hit, both on the ground and in the air. And the damage reduction to his fair actually means it combos better.
lucina and zelda looking nice! will update my 3ds copy when i get off work.
No offense, but how on earth does anyone have this sort of time? Hats off to you if you found a job that you get to do this sort if thing though. Anyway, glad to see Yoshinwasnt hit hard.
@IceClimbers
Haha...the video is funny...but incredibly sad T_T. I love they buffed WFT...but yeah, Samus deserved a little more love too.
@Whopper744 First, it's not like one guy made this. It is a community where someone checks their main(s) to see if anything is different and posts it on the forums. Then someone compiles it. And secondly, eventually someone data dumps the game and we have the definitive proof to what was changed and what wasn't.
So it doesn't really take much time especially for people passionate about Smash.
I swear it looks like the Mii's have gotten weaker, while everyone else has gotten stronger.
Shulk is the last character that needed buffing...
Samus doesn't need fixing, She is a zone character.
She is supposed to be bad up close.
@DiscoGentleman That sounds brilliant!! I'd love to see a pic when done. You should see my Toad shrine too haha. Every figurine/plushie/model ever made of the little fellow. So glad to know he has another fan! high 5
@PlywoodStick Yeah but in response to Marth being so bad they added Roy as the "pay to win" version of him.
@rp17 well, the damage nerf on the fair doesn't change knockback, so it combos the same, the d-tilt can still combo but its less consistent, sooooooooooooooo...
@Wonky_Kong Knockback is directly related to damage, so a change in damage will always result in a change in knockback. The only exceptions are set knockback moves (basically any move that doesn't kill even at 999%). D-tilt's new angle means that it trips more often, leading to heavy punishes or KOs, and can be even used as a edgeguard since it hits below the ledge. D-tilt was never an optimal combo move anyway.
