While Skylanders SuperChargers isn't - according to our surveys - particularly high up the wishlists of active Nintendo Life readers, it could be a notable release for Wii U, in particular. During E3 Nintendo and Activision confirmed a smart and unique collaboration that brings Bowser and Donkey Kong into the game with their own Skylanders figures, which can also be switched into amiibo.
Considering the ongoing popularity of the franchise, exclusive content like this is a smart business move and will help make the Wii U version that bit more tempting. Now, in what we expect to be the first of plenty of marketing messages, the game's official European YouTube channel has released a new trailer to highlight the partnership.
Both Nintendo and Activision will no doubt be hoping that the collaboration will build hype and sales for the September release.

I'm more concerned about the box art than anything else. Seriously, Activision?
"IP's first ever guest stars"
cough Spyro cough
With Activision in charge of production & supply of the toys, maybe Nintendo might learn a thing or two.
@ALinkttPresent Spyro was the main character for the first series of games, not a guest star.
@MightyKrypto Or the DK and Bowser figures will sell out in an instant and Activision will learn the sad fact that anything Amiibo related will sell out before it even hits the shelves lol
@ShaunOfNintendo Well they will be included in the starter bundles
@Wolfgabe Did they say anything about them being sold individually?
@ningeek185 Exactly! What a hideous box art!!
Too bad I'll never get this game. I don't do Skylanders, and I won't start now just because of this.
I like it. I don't want to like it, my wallet hates it, but... yeah, I like it.
It almost tempts me, but almost is still so far from actually buying this
I picked up Giants and Swapforce since they were only $12. But these have me tempted to get earlier. It might finally be Skylanders that I have enough interest in to beat.
What a shame, Nintendo missed a golden chance to troll everyone with this production.
E3 Digital Event
Footage is shown of Donkey Kong walking in the 3D worlds throwing barrels at everything "OMG A 3D DONKEY KONG PLATFORMER, FINALLY, THANK YOU NINTENDO!"
Then the footage shows Bowser and DK walking alongside in this 3D Worlds sreading chaos "OMG AND BOWSER IS IN THE GAME TOO WITH CO-OP PLAY!...wait a sec...could this be...the long awaited toys to life adventure game with amiibo?"
Then the video shows the new figures of DK and Bowser with an amiibo logo on the screen "OMG IT IS! AN ADVENTURE GAME WITH AMIIBO, TAKE ALL MY MONEY NINTENDO!"
And finally, the Skylanders SuperChargers logo appears on screen alongside the Activision brand "WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT?"
Iwata: (laughs)
Actually, the trailer is not new, but for some reason it was not released separately. It was part of this Play Nintendo video from E3:

Should have been the one shown on the Nintendo YouTube channel right after the Digital Event if you ask me..
The crossover might pay off for Nintendo if kids could then take the DK and Bowser figures and use them in the big Nintendo amiibo game...but there isn't one, so no, I guess.
@Yomerodes They should have done it! It was in line with everything else they did during the presentation!
@WaveBoy
Nice list! But I have to ask, why no Xenoblade X or Devil's Third? Also Legend of Kay is supposed to be good I hear, some remake of a PS2 game? I had never heard of it but I'm buying the game based on others' recommendations.
I'm actually kind of interested in this, admittedly it didn't happen overnight. I'd always ignored Skylanders, Disney Infinity, Lego Dimensions, all that crap. But the Star Wars got my attention in Infinity, which in a way tore the wall down to the point I started paying attention to stuff like this Skylanders game.
Plus I really want an excuse to get those Amiibo. The other one comes with the 3DS racing version- I wonder how that one's going to turn out...
@Yomerodes - What you described is more an actual game reveal than a troll, ACaF was a troll, 4 amiibo, no game.
@JaxonH - "Plus I really want an excuse to get those Amiibo. The other one comes with the 3DS racing version- I wonder how that one's going to turn out..."
I already wanted the game, but that video is really annoying. It shows the 2 amiibo in game together, which will be great if they sell them seaprately, and at the end it says Skylander Suprchargers w/ the Wii U, Wii adn 3D Slogos at the bottom, but we already know that agme is NOT going to be a Wii or 3DS b/c they are getting Racers, which is basically going to be Jak X all over again. But we may have to buy it to get 1 of the amiibo.
Seems like false advertising.
@rjejr
I do hope they sell them separately because I really don't feel like popping $130 for those 2 Amiibo. And I'm definitely not buying any separate Skylanders just to play the game. Can I play the entire game with just those two characters?
But hey! Good news! Me and the Amiibo goon squad figured out how to import from Canada finally. After the announcement Dark Pit is BestBuy exclusive, IN STORE ONLY, on a workday, we had to figure out a way to beat the system.
Well, we did exactly that. The border to the land of plenty has been torn down- Amiibo and maple syrup for all!
@JaxonH You can play the whole game with them
@JaxonH
Whoa, hey now, leave a Dark Pit for those of us that actually LIVE here =P
Also, I wouldn't call us "land of plenty" where amiibo are concerned. We probably have it worse compared to the US.
We DO have maple syrup however.
@JaxonH if it's like previous installments then yes you can play the whole game with just those two. Other skylanders open up new areas so to 100% the game you would at least need to buy 5 to 6 more with the right requirements.
@DarthNocturnal
Lol, are they doing all this exclusive crap up there too? I have multiple sets of wave 5 from EU and JP, but of course I'll need one good sealed NA version for the set. Unfortunately they're selling online less and less here, and shifting toward in-store only exclusives.
I can't burn the whole vacation day just to go to Best Buy in hopes of ONE Dark Pit (they don't even let you buy two, otherwise I could have a friend grab me one).
They're not doing that kind of stuff up in Canada are they? Was Jiggly Target exclusive, Ninja TRU exclusive and Ness ebGames exclusive for you guys?
@JaxonH - Don't forget the beer, much better domestic beer up north. I drank my way thru college on Moosehead.
@rjejr
Never heard of it. Maybe one day if I ever drink a beer again I'll try it out.
You went to college in Canada?
@JaxonH - No, but a friend of mine lived in Buffalo and turned me onto it. Fortunately my poor alcoholic neighborhood had a beer distributor that carried it.
Keep in mind this was back in the 80's before microbrews were invented, probably tastes like piss now. I'm more of a beer snob, quality over quantity.
@JaxonH
I've been under the assumption that exclusive amiibo are either A: Still exclusive, if the store brand is in Canada (TRU, Wal-Mart, Best Buy), or B: sold by the Canadian "brand" of the exclusive store chain (EB Games, owned by Gamestop).
There's a wrench in the works however. Rosalina was exclusive to Target. AKA, the company was that has closed ALL STORES in Canada. So... I have no idea what happened to her amiibo.
And I can't remember if Amazon has had any exclusives, but... well, Amazon.ca sucks with bonus goodies. If a game has a preorder incentive in the US, Canada probably DOESN'T have it. So, if they have exclusive amiibo, I'll be surprised.
Edit: Just did a search for Shulk on EB Games... not even a LISTING with "Sold Out" over the add to cart button.
@DarthNocturnal
So Dark Pit will probably be BB exclusive in Canada, but not necessarily in-store only like in the US.
All I need is a foot in the door to buy online and I'm good
@JaxonH
Just searched. Best Buy.ca doesn't even have a Dark Pit listing... I'm not sure if that means he isn't exclusive, or if Canadian retailers are being slow, as per the (sometimes) norm.
But it DID have Pac-Man and Silver Mario.
I've got an unhealthy addiction to amiibo, but I'm not bothered about these two. I'm going to keep telling myself that they're Skylanders, not amiibo.
However, if they were sold separately, then I'll be really tempted to get them.
@crimsontadpoles
I use that trick myself- "these aren't REALLY Amiibo, I don't need them"
-Nintendo releases Bowser and DK separately-
Everyone makes a mad dash to preorder
@ALinkttPresent Uh... when was Spyro ever a guest character? I'm genuinely curious as to when you think that happened since HIS NAME WAS IN THE ORIGINAL TITLE and HIS FACE WAS ON THE ORIGINAL BOX AND LOGO.
@kamifox1 Spyro's main purpose was a cameo to reel players in by having a familiar character in the game in order to introduce the new IP successfully; it was never in the Spyro series and has always been its own series, people just misunderstood this action and now see it as the Spyro series hence why everyone hates it. Personally I began to like Skylanders for their new and fresh ideas, not for their horribly ugly Spyro redesign. That's why I don't get all the hate right now. They're done with shoving Spyro in our face, and while I think some of their marketing has been a bit shady, it's a genuinely decent game series. I almost skipped out on Superchargers until-OH MY GOSH IS THAT BOWSER?! Take my money Activision! ...Dang it their plan worked!
@3dsgeek333 He was never a guest though. No more so than any other playable character in the franchise. He was, in fact, originally supposed to be the lead character and the game was supposed to be a spin-off of the Spyro franchise but things change during development and yada yada yada. Yes, he probably did stay because he was a familiar face that would draw people in but that wasn't the original intention, far from it.
Besides which, how often do you see a guests name as a part of the full title of a game? I know I never do unless it's a little added on bit at the end like "& insert name here" or "Featuring insert name here".
Still waiting on that Amiibo-centric game, Nintendo. I imagine when they see how successful those DK & Bowser Skyland-bo sell, that they'll consider it in a "Oh, so they want more value out of their figures~" kinda way.
That being said, I've been with Skylanders since the start of the franchise and have built up a nice little collection to boot. But now that they've brought vehicles into it, I've totally lost interest. Same goes for a friend of mine who'd been just as enthralled with the series as I was - that is until this happened.
Lucky for me neither Bowser or DK interest me as either skylander or Amiibo, so sticking both concepts in one figure is a lost cause on me. They'd have grabbed my attention if it had been Kirby or even Metaknight, but that's not happening.
Would have been great if Activision found a way to make all Amiibo compatible in Skylanders though. They would have made enough money to buy a small country by now. But ah well, wishful thinking, I guess.
Nintendo does need to do something though...
@ALinkttPresent The Skylander series IS Spyro.
I like how DK includes Diddy in the game. I think the Skylanders figures themselves look inferior to Amiibo and Disney Infinity, so I'm still torn about this, espcially considering Bowser comes in the Wii bundle and DK in the Wii U bundle. Bowser and DK look worse in this game than in anything Nintendo have brought out this gen and even last gen, however, I picked up Swap Force for $3 and my kids are having a bit of fun with that (but since Wooly World came out it hasn't been played).
@Rhydas An amiibo-centric game probably wouldn't be that great of an idea when they're already screwing up with providing enough amiibo for everyone. Technically it's already happening with the new Animal Crossing games but I get what you mean.
A Skylanders/Disney Infinity-esque game with Nintendo's amiibo being the focus would be interesting, the only issue is not being able to take full advantage of that because everyone takes the rarer amiibo in the blink of an eye and they're almost never available for their real price because of scalpers.
If they ever make original amiibo for their amiibo-centric game (as in, not use SSB amiibo and make new ones like they did for Mario Party) then maybe it'd work, but I still don't think it's going to unless they get their act together with the issues they have with amiibo.
@JaxonH @crimsontadpoles - I really can't imagine these ever being sold separately. Skylanders works on Wi U, 3DS, Wii, PS3, PS4, Xbox360, X1. But these will only work on the first 3. That's 160m consoles they'll work on, but 190m they won't.
Maybe the Nintendo World store or online in the UK, but in general I don't think so, which is unfortunate, but it might make it easier for Activision to make enough.
I'm jus glad Wii is a different game and Wii U plays Wii games in case I have to buy both.
This has to be one of the worst ideas I've ever seen. This is a new low for video game. This brings Skylanders almost all the way down to Sonic Boom. I was hoping it would never come to this...
