The most recent Miiverse update has met with mixed responses; some feel it's a marked improvement, others are reacting as though it's the spawn of something horrendous. For better or for worse, this new layout is here to stay.
The new features may take some getting used to, but in order to speed up this process we've produced a video guide that takes you through the ins, outs, ups, and downs of this new and terrifying format, so make sure you check it out below!

It's not as bad as people made it out to be. Just restrictive, which really only affects the kids who use it as their primary social media.
Once we get used to the new layout it will be easy to navigate.
I was afraid it was going to make reporting and banning people much easier because it seemed like anything deemed not game-related could be reportable. So far though, I haven't see anything too bad. Too early to tell on that front though.
Doesn't seem like that big of a change. People will complain about anything.
When I saw the new layout I had no idea how to even post.
Oh, my post was the one in Alex's activity feed.
I kind of like the new update, but am a little disappointed that I can't have more than one discussion open at a time.
Most of the people I follow generally agree that the redesign is alright or at least not as bad as they thought it'd be. Chalk another one up for "overreactions", though the redesign does have a couple of flaws.
Here's the thing, I think I'll actually use MI I verse just as much now as I did before, but now I'll only use it for my own journal and screenshots, and maybe frienss, nobody else, so it goes from being social to personal, ie it defeats it's whole reason for being.
I think for this the only opinion that's matter though are the 10-25 year olds, it's their FB so they now better than old people if it's good or not. Bad for me could mean better for everyone else.
Also, I think we won't know for sure until Super Mario Maker, that's 6 weeks away plus it's a big and social game. October 1st would be a good time for evaluating how well the redesign worked.
I got banned for 2 weeks and don't even know why! I called them about it... no help even understanding why I was banned!
The only problem is the fact that Wii games have no communities, so I have nowhere to post or ask about Metroid Prime, Super Mario Galaxy and others. I used to post about them on the activity feed, but now I have to use another games' communities. The change alienated these games... Which are available to download on the eshop!
The 30 comment limit is the worst part, they want us to talk more about games but also limit how much we talk. I can't discuss much with just 30 comments.
What's the point of the discussion feature if 30 is the limit
Why all the hyperbole recently about stuff like Smash Tourneys being awful just because 1vs1 is not an option, or the Miiverse upgrade because of no more than 30 comments?
Nice! That categorization is really great, exactly what the Miiverse always lacked in my opinion. Now I can look exactly for what I've been searching and won't be disctracted by the tons of irrelevant posts.
Other than that, I think nothing changes for me. I occasionally exchange messages with one Miiverse friend, other than that, I only read and sometimes post. Or in special cases, view some drawings. Now I can do exactly that and nothing else.
@rjejr Lol, you couldn't be more wrong. I'm 30 and I got FB, still the Miiverse has it's own place for me. I mean, FB is heavily annoying anyway with hundreds of friends posting stuff, ads (if you haven't blocked them), recommendations etc.
Miiverse was always the opposite, quite calm and much nicer (regarding the people's interactions) than anything on the web. It's the perfect place to discuss your favourite Wii U games or recent events/developments like E3. And I think that's exactly what it is supposed to be.
Besides, I'm pretty sure all the kids and teens use FB anyway. It's not like it competes with Miiverse in any way.
@Mona-Reggie Really? How can you post more than 30 posts a day? I'm not even sure if I ever made 10 posts on a single day (not even during E3 or when Iwata passed away).
The 30 post limit wouldn't bother me at all if it meant just posts, but the fact that it includes comments, even those on our own posts, is what gets me. Why are we limited on how much we can comment on our own posts? If you get in a discussion with someone you're likely to burn through 30 posts in a hurry.
Also, it makes it a bit more difficult to just look at people's posts now that they're split into different groups. If it ain't broke, Nintendo...
@Giygas_95 I get what you're saying, but still: 30 in one single day? Including other posts in the discussion... I don't know, still sounds pretty much to me. I've never seen such a big discussion on Miiverse where it could pose a problem.
I just booted up Miiverse for the first time since the relaunch and it says in-game-posts are not included in the 30 posts per day. So it's even less of a problem.
Besides, the info says "the limitations on posting quickly in succession will become less strict". Now that's a really important change! Since you can't edit your postings, sometimes you're forced to make doubleposts in a short amount of time. I had that problem a couple of times (I'm a quick typer) and Miiverse always told me to wait. Now I guess/hope this won't be a problem anymore.
But of course, making your posts editable would've been a far better improvement.
Anyway, so where is this reDESIGN everyone is talking about? Honestly, I don't see it. The Miiverse looks exactly the same as before, so the design hasn't changed even a bit.
@shani I've seen some pretty big discussions where it might have been a problem. By in-game posts, do you mean ones that you would post if, say, the game asks you if you want to post after beating a level or something? Just wondered what exactly in-game posts entails. And yes I agree about being able to edit posts. Goodness knows how many times I've made a stupid mistake and just had to erase the post.
One change I wish they WOULD make is allowing us to message friends on all versions of Miiverse. Kind of bugs me when I can't check my messages unless I'm on Wii U's Miiverse. Also better notification of friend messages would be nice because there have been a number of times I was playing a game for an extended period of time and missed an invite from a friend on another game because the only way to tell is by actually going into Miiverse. The pulsating Miiverse icon doesn't really help a lot of the time because it often keeps going when there's not actually anything for me to check.
And thank you for disagreeing in a civil way. I don't get much of that which is why I usually keep my opinions to myself.
Miiverse's biggest issue is its speed, or lack thereof. Until the app functions a quick as Twitter, I will never regularly use it. The post limit per day is silly too. All because 12 year olds don't know how to act online.
I think it looks better
@Giygas_95 "Why are we limited on how much we can comment on our own posts? If you get in a discussion with someone you're likely to burn through 30 posts in a hurry."
That's the point. Nintendo doesn't want extended discussions on MV anymore. They want it to be, "How do I get past this part?" Second guy says, "Do this, this and this." And then end of discussion. It's why you can't even make another post without locking your previous ones down.
My only issue still is how slow it is
@shauntu You can't make the best use of the discussion box and help most of the miiversians out with game related problems with a 30 comment/post a day limit, eh? I haven't got an answer for the no 1v1 option since I don't on Smash bros U, sorry.
I don't have a problem with the redesign and I didn't have one with it even before it happened. It was also very easy to access and understand, I got everything within the first five minutes of it's launch. I did/do have conversations from time to time but the 30 daily posting limit doesn't seem to really be affecting any of that either so no big deal. Although now a lot of the kids that are butt hurt over the change migrated over to the Zelda community and are killing it with tons of randomness. Sad too because that used to be my favorite one to go to, now I don't really go there at all. Anyway change is good and I always welcome it no matter the outcome, it's always fun to try new things.
I literally only post a couple of times a week because I happen to be having a great time in a game and want to share it. I like the new layout, it doesn't really affect me in the slightest. To me the whole social media side is just a little plus added on to the side of the main experience. I don't care about achievements and all that rubbish, I survived many generations without them so to me it's no big deal. I just want to play the games at the end of the day.
Meh, i just have a spare 3ds i can factory reset if i get banned from miiverse, then i can create another account and continue using it, the guide helps but im fine, lol
I think the post limit may have something to do with the concept of "grooming".
So what if you can't have extended conversations with random people on Miiverse? Who cares. If you know them, and are friends, it's quite easy to switch to one of the myriad of social media platforms to continue your conversation.
I'm really liking the new redesign.
...Eh, still not gonna bother with Miiverse.
@Captain_Gonru - "You've seen my Miiverse feed."
Feed? I think it was 1 post - "I cheat at FIFA."
I don't know how much will be in SMM and how much they expect to be on Miiverse, but it is a big game that will sell well so I expect people to be using it more than then they are now. Also, that's kind of an arbitrary date to give people some time to get used to the new layout. Which personally I'm not a big fan of, my in game Spaltoon posts are way at the bottom, not in my journal where I want them, and in game Spaltoon posts don't even ask you were to put them, which seems to defeat the purpose of having different sections to put posts in. Maybe it only works from Miiverse, or if you are posting on several different games at once. I'm also playing Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga which is awesome. It's so funny I can't even believe Nintnedo made it, it's borderline fan fiction. But I don't see any reason at all to post to Miiverse about it, it's just more of a fun little distraction, finally found my zen.
It is a littlie difficult to post. I want to post in many communities and I think I can only answer topics unless I enter directly by home in the game.
@Klimbatize Just my opinion...but discussing games seems like the whole point of Miiverse. Although I guess it DOES help combat nasty flame wars.
Regardless, I familiarized myself with the new layout, and I can honestly say it still feels way clunkier than it did before the redesign.
I agree with you, Giygas. I enjoy discussing in-depth strategies there, but apparently Nintendo wants to limit discussion to a minimum. 30 is enough for me, but now people who I used to communicate with aren't around as much because they burn through that 30 quickly, and have to check in maybe once a day in threads where we were legitimately discussing games.
>30 comments/posts a day
>100 comments per post
>clunky design
>keeps the 2 minute rule even though they said it would be removed
And their justification is "long discussions" because that somehow "prevents others from enjoying their favourite communities to the fullest"? It's an utter joke and anyone defending this downgrade is a blind fanboy.
A thing I don't like about the redesign is that you now have to click on a category in order to yeah items from that category, basically meaning I get less yeahs. Other than that it's great. Oh, and nobody understands how to use the discussion feature.
@Sakuraichu The 2 minute rule was edited. They never said it would be removed. I find I can post things in much more quick succession than before. And why should I ever want to post more than 30 posts a day?
i honestly think the way it was before was better buttttt
