Speaking to IGN, Shigeru Miyamoto has confirmed that upcoming Wii U space shooter Star Fox Zero will not feature an online multiplayer mode. Here is Miyamoto-san's reasoning for this not entirely surprising omission:
So, we're really prioritising getting this new game playing at 60 frames-per-second. In previous Star Fox games we had focused a lot on dogfighting, but here we're really focused more the single-player experience.
Of course, as we continue on and once people get a feeling for the game... as the process continues if we find that we do think it'd be really good we'll definitely consider it, but right now we're not.
What do you think of this news? Are you glad that Star Fox Zero is more focused on the single-player experience and a smooth framerate, or do you think this is a missed opportunity?

Piling it on here.
I figured it wouldn't have it. Would be cool though.
The multiplayer in Star Fox 64 was great. They should add such a thing online in this one as well.
Forget online, what about OFFline multiplayer? Has that been confirmed or denied and I missed it, like i did the release date (those ugly N64 graphics were distracting me)?
That's ok. Just add it to the long list of disappointments.
Lylat Wars I meant.
Somehow I don't think anyone is surprised* by this, but it doesn't make it any less disappointing.
*They have a year, tops, to make the game, so the only real option, short spending gargantuan sums of money on development (which will never happen on a SF title in this day and age), is to focus on one aspect and bring that up to as close to perfect as possible because there simply isn't enough time or will (read: money) to do more than that.
I hope the campaign is crazily long, then...
Considering that they've done other online multiplayer games in 60 FPS, I don't buy that reasoning at all. An online multiplayer mode wouldn't detract from the single player experience, it'd just add value to the overall game and extend replayability.
@rjejr those n64 graphics can be very distracting lol
A better question would be. If the Bayonetta guys have been involved in this, then why does it look so slow and dull?
Well as with splatoon they can always update it later if they choose. I want the game for the single player anyway.
I think speaks volumes when we are disappointed by news like this but it has become all too expected.
No online? Wow Nintendo you're making me hate you more and more. Why?
... What N64 emulator are ya'll using? SF64 does NOT look like this game.
How to make this E3 even worse...
I don't care about online for StarFox. Question is if can they maintain 60fps when displaying different views on the TV and the gamepad?
It's not like they were given a lot of time to develop this game, I couldn't imagine fan anger if this was delayed till 2016. It be nice if it had Online Multiplayer but I want a good *ss campaign.
Maybe, since Platinum is co-developing, Miyamoto and his team are focusing on single player and Platinum is developing online akin to Tag Climax... One can hope, right?
@Captain_Gonru - I'll friend you, but don't expect to be playing AC:aF w/ me as board games aren't my thing. Though I doubt that will have online either.
I'll look elsewhere for my zen I think. "Dreams" maybe. In 2017.
@Hero-of-WiiU - "I couldn't imagine fan anger if this was delayed till 2016"
You seem pretty sure it isn't. I wouldn't be surprised if NA gets it before Christmas and EU/UK after like Captain Toad. I have as much confidence in "holiday" as Nintendo announcing Zelda U for 2015.
Nope. Not for me. The biggest selling point for me for Star Fox 64 was the multiplayer. By that I mean I would have eventually bought the game... probably used, or after a significant price drop. But I bought it day one after playing the multiplayer at E3 that year. There is no excuse for this kind of step backwards... especially with Nintendo talking up their online experience/community on the Wii U.
Everybody complains all the Wii U games are multiplayer games and not single player games. Nintendo makes a single player game. Everyone complains.
So basically saving it for the sequel. But I do prefer single player above else, so yay?
I can overcome the very mediocre graphic, but no online is a no-sell to me.... it is just stupid....
Fortunately, yesterday I've seen Star Wars Battlefront...
not sure was worse looking nintedolife's new home layout or them 64 graphics on the game hmm... >.<
but come on if the 64version had some type of multiplayer then im sure this one can even the 3ds one had it....
Worst news I heard all day, if it had online, it would have been a sure fire Day1, but like this ... the games visuals are appaling and I'm getting tired of getting games that have a very narrow useability. If that new co-op Metroid and Zelda has no online, I will ignore it, since I have no one around here, I can play it with ... Nintendo really needs to adjust to some realities :-7 I wanted to play Starfox online on the 3DS (it should have been in there back then), but this is plain ridiculous Oo
@rjejr I haven't heard anything about local multiplayer, but I gotta say that the importance of the gamepad makes me concerned that local multiplayer is not happening. 4 player couch multiplayer is still a big thing in my house. While I would love Nintendo to use what they learned from Splatoon for a rock solid online multiplayer (like old school Crimson Skies on the original Xbox - that would be awesome), I was also really hoping for some fun local multiplayer.
And regarding graphics, they were definitely lacklustre. There were some scenes that looks nice and others looked rough! I find it interesting whenever I look at the amazing graphics of Xenoblade. If the Wii U can have solid graphics like that, games like Starfox could be amazing and yet - it isn't. Very sad indeed.
While I was planning that Starfox would be a Day One purchase - I am not so sure now.
@Yorumi That battle was freaking awesome..... I was totally into it.... jumping from infantry battle to Tie Fighter cockpit and then the duel with light sabre.... o gosh, I am totally sold on that...
See you somewhere in the galaxy then!
Im ok with them focusing on a awesome one gamplayer mode. Though if enough people r requesting it there could be a seperate game with online dogfighting style that would be great. Imagine your Mii dressed in a star fox outfit.
Well not really surprised but I would of welcomed it.
Translation: We didn't have time to put in multi-player in
Sorry guys, Miyamoto is too busy making an Arwing amiibo.
Disappointed, but not majorly so. I'll hope for the best, but if axing mp means a better singleplayer experience, I'll live.
After watching the vid in the eShop the graphics arent horrible, more like non-descript, which is a huge step up from the live feed. Would be nice if an on rails shooter could look a lot better - wont be confusing this w/ MK8 thats for sure - but at least I dont find them off putting now. Just plain and boring. Maybe Shinen cah help them shiny things up, FAST looks gorgeous.
Online was always secondary for me with a this game so I'm still getting the game I was hoping for here
Wth. Even Zelda Triforce Heroes has online multiplayer. Given that Bayonetta 2 has this feature, I think there is little excuse.
Just add it as DLC later, least you've been doing that right...
@DarkNinja9 Like a lot of developers do, when showing footage of a game still being developed, the video they show can be anything up to 6 months old. Waiting until cliser to release day to show the near finished product, is going to achieve a better 'WOW' factor. You honestly think Platinum cannot create better looking visuals than what we saw today?
Good that they're focusing on the single player, but this game really should have online multiplayer.
That doesn't even make sense.. Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. have full online multiplayer and run at 60FPS. And compare Star Fox's graphics to those, which are frankly the best looking games on the Wii U.
I'm still happy to get a new Star Fox, but early Xbox 360 graphics and no online multiplayer... Come on now... Imagine how awesome an online 4-player co-op mode would have been. And that's exactly what Black Ops 3 has. But no, we don't get ANY online play with Star Fox and oh, we don't get Black Ops 3 either.
I've been a hardcore, loyal Nintendo fanboy my whole life(34 years old now), but I really am about to just go buy a PS4.
Don't delay this game for multiplayer please. Splatoon is awesome enough for now.
I think online multiplayer would be a huge hit, it would be a real shame to see ninty miss another great opportunity. Fingers crossed.
@rjejr OK, good, I was not the only one that was like what is up with the graphics? It needs to be darker more gritty not so clean looking. I'm sure it will be fine and a great game but kinda disappointed in the look of the game. It's almost if they have just defaulted to the plastic look for all new first and second party games. The plastic look works for Mario. But star fox? Come on guys... Also I think they should have updated the voices to not so cartoonie... The part at the end of the trailer " do a barrel roll " I am like no no no no no...
@vio same here, I'm 35... And it seems nintendo gets stuck... I am sorry but it's time for iwata to go... He continuously messes up and then apologizes... When will Nintendo (& Sony and Microsoft for that matter) learn that, customers want great content... Not a gimmick, real good games. Like the metroid game... they should have announced a brand new Metroid Prime, and then that 3ds Metroid game should have been alongside the new big game. like maybe even release the smaller 3ds one prior to be big one...
This was not a concern for me before yet as time goes I have noticed myself liking online gaming and online options in games, it has become more and more IMPORTANT to me so much that if a title don't have online multiplayer or online leaderboards there is about a seventy percent chance I'm not gonna buy it for me the online is almost a must for value in replay .
I can't believe this, star wars battlefront may of sold me on which console to pursue...
@MrRaven1972 the graphics need to be scaled down compared to i.e xenoblade, in order for it to be able to achieve 60fps on both TV and gamepad. Its rendering two viewports. So its 2x more power required right there. I'd take fluid 60fps, esp in a game like this over flashy visuals any day. But then again, I'm as old as Mario
I don't have any friends that play video games, so that means this game is going to have a short shelf life for me.
I still am going to buy the game, but my hopes have dropped for this one.
So it will be the length of a movie (2-5hrs) and have no online (probably offline) mp, just great.
People were expecting online multiplayer? Based on what, exactly?
I think I have the solution to all the unfounded complaints about the graphics: make it shinier. The graphics actually look good, if you pay attention to the actual polygonal models, there is no problem - certainly better than Wii graphics (or, gods forbid, N64, like some blind people are claiming). I'll bet that if this abused bloom lighting and gave the Arwing significant sheen, not a one of you would have spoken against the graphics.
Really, I think you all sound like spoiled brats about the whole graphics thing. And I will remind you at every turn.
