The Monster Hunter franchise is certainly a favourite among many in the Nintendo Life team, with the recent arrival of Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate being very welcome indeed. While the formula for the franchise has remained largely consistent, Capcom is now planning to shake things up with a cartoonish RPG experience - Monster Hunter Stories; even better news is that it's coming to the 3DS.
So far we only have a cinematic trailer, which shows a young hunter and Feline / Palicoe being chased by a Tigrex, only to hop onto a mini Rathalos and ride it; that's one of the most pleasing sentences this Monster Hunter fan's ever been able to write. Check it out below.
The game was announced at the "Monster Hunter Fest '15 Finals" event in Japan, and series producer Ryozo Tsujimoto explained that this is an RPG experience in which you play as these Riders. He expanded with the following, as reported by Siliconera:
After having passed the 10th anniversary last year, this is a new challenge for the Monster Hunter series, that we've began designing since about five years ago.
While staying true to the world of Monster Hunter, and a story that can only be told through an RPG, we'd like to pack it with fun and enjoyment that we can't even begin to describe with words.
It is still in the middle of development, we'd like to offer you a new kind of excitement that is different from the conventional series, and the development staff are working on it in full-spirit.
It's pegged for a 2016 release in Japan, and we hope that Capcom's efforts to continue expanding the franchise will ensure a route to the West. It's also promising news that it's coming to the 3DS, as we await the likely announcement of Monster Hunter 5 later in the year.

What............color me interested!
So this monster hunter is going to be kinda kid safe game to play.
Even though its not exactly like the other MH games, i'd still play it. Looks awesome.
looks like fun. I would get it if it came here
Looks pretty cool! Could be something.
I wonder if you can ride on a Deviljho.
This looks really cool !
developed by telltale games?
Is it wrong that this appeals to me more than the main series.I only just decided to take the plunge and order 4 ultimate from Amazon to see what the fuss is about.
I enjoy the main series, but I don't know what to make of this yet. Hopefully this will make younger people more interested in the Monster Hunter series.
Is this Pokemon?
I've never been too interested in the Monster Hunter franchise, but this game looks interesting. I also love the splash of color. Depending on the gameplay, I may pick this up.
Wow I certainly want to see more of this! It looks really interesting.
As long as they don't region lock the online mode like they did with MH3U on Wii U and MH4U on 3DS, I'd be really excited if this came to the west. Might be a day 1 purchase.
I'M really interested in this, I never got into the mainline Monster Hunter games because they felt like chores for me .... but I always like the games and the Idea behind them ^^
A Monster Hunter RPG could be really cool, so I'm impatiently waiting for more information ^^
This is not the announcement that I have been clamoring for. MH4U HD WiiU pretty please. But this does look interesting.
I'd much rather 4 for the Wii U.
Like several have said, despite several attempts I just couldn't get into the mainline MH series. Playing as a nameless hunter and basically going round hunting animals to get materials to make better equipment to hunt even bigger animals. Rinse, repeat, try again (with some changes in enemy attack patterns). I could see the appeal, but it didn't apply to me.
This on the other hand, with names characters and potential for more story, has me intrigued. I do wonder how the battle system will be.
so it's an RPG in the Monster Hunter world?......well sign me up
I like the art style. It looks nice. Hopefully Capcom puts this and MH4U on the Wii U as well. I want my whole family to see me in action.
Working on it for 5 years? The one thing im worrried about us if it can live up to the scale of the main series
I'm very interested but man why it has to be 3DS only smh.
@Iggly
As long as you had a fishing line with a well-done steak tied to the end of it to dangle in front of the Deviljho I'm sure you could get that stinky breath monster up to top speed!
@Josaku
A lot of people say it "feels like a chore" because of the tutorial quests in the previous entries. Trust me once you start hunting REAL monsters, nothing is a chore. It becomes the sweetest pleasure of a lifetime. People calling in to work just to keep playing the game is not unheard of (in fact I've done it).
It may sound monotonous, but the combat is so technical and intense that it never gets old. I could fight a monster 100 times and each hunt would play out differently, and be in different locales with different terrain, and other monsters crashing the party in the middle of a hunt.
MH4U does a MUCH better job of reeling you in and cuts the training quests down by a large margin. In fact, the game starts out with you hunting a monster. Action packed right from the get-go.
@FX102A
Well the appeal isn't in story, but the action of the hunt (even so, MH4U has a story with characters and names and all that). But it's not just "hunting animals rinse and repeat". It's boss battles of a lifetime with complex mechanics x1000. That is the fun of the game. Hunting monsters isn't just a means to an end, it is the end. That's where the fun of the game lies. That's what it's all about. Fighting a monster is a thrill like riding a roller coaster. Gathering and preparing for the hunt is the anticipating climb before the first big drop.
Not that everyone will like it, but I think over 90% of people who say they can't get into it, never played long enough to start hunting serious monsters and craft their first full armor set and weapon. I used to be one of those people actually. Gave up on MH3U after a few hours cause it just seemed "boring". I'm SO glad my friend convinced me to give it another go and hunt online with him. I couldn't have been more wrong about what the game was really like. The first 5 hours are not representative of the rest of the game, not even close.
@JaxonH That would be pretty cool to do, now I really hope the game has the option to ride a Deviljho.
Wooo! Haha, maybe this will be the Monster Hunter to get me into the series?
@ALinkttPresent
Region lock online in MH3U? It's not region locked. I'm play with guys in Europe all the time in that game, and I'm in North America. Only region that wasn't included was Japan. But now that MH is gaining traction they don't need to compile regions. I like it how they did with MH4U where you only play with people in your region, cause it would be a pain with people of different languages.
But this doesn't even look like an online game anyways. Probably a single player RPG
I cannot get excited until I see gameplay. Indeed Capcom will only give us two series, mh and aa.
Colour and sense of humour are two things mh could use more of.
Right off the bat the look and style of this has me about a hundred times more interested than the previous garish looking (certainly in videos) Monster Hunter game on 3DS. That's me giving some benefit of the doubt that what I'm seeing in the video is genuinely representative on the actual game running on the 3DS. Also, I'm thinking that based on what is shown in the video that this game will additionally avoid the loading between relatively small areas that was another pet peeve of mine from the previous games in the series. If it takes the strengths of the Monster Hunter series and mixes them in with a more open world and Zelda-ish RPG type approach, it could potentially be rather good.
@JaxonH Well, if you have to play a game for 5 hours before you finally get to enjoy it the way it was properly intended, the game has [massively] failed [by design] imo
Looks like Ni No Kuni. Im interested.
@Kirk
No, not necessarily. While I agree the sooner the better, Monster Hunter is a game that one simply cannot grasp or even begin to comprehend before then. In fact, hundreds of hours in and people are still learning new things. It's just the nature of playing a game that is so in depth. It's not like most other games where you pick it up, learn what button does what and go at it.
But MH4U did a MUCH better job. It still takes hours to even begin to start grasping everything, but they at least made it more interesting during that time frame. MH3U wasn't that good at reeling new players in. But, the game is one of the best ever made in all of history. I guess it just takes faith on part of the gamer to trust that there's a reason so many people swear by it- all the ones who actually played long enough to understand the game.
EDIT: I also feel that while the amount of time needed to invest learning the game before fully enjoying it is longer than most other games, the rewards for doing so are so much more. You get what you pay for, so to speak. You pay a steep price learning the game, but what you get back is so much more than I ever imagined a game could offer.
@JaxonH Well I'm certainly not saying they aren't good-great games. Just they fail on a few fundamental levels for me and one of them is asking me to have faith for multiple hours that doing something I don't find particularly interesting or compelling at all will ultimately/eventually result in one of the best and most rewarding game experiences. Sadly, that's never been the case for me in the past, where I somehow kept playing a game I didn't really enjoy for hours and then suddenly grew to enjoy it, so it's just asking too much of me personally I think. Luckily, there's a whole lot of people a lot more dedicated than me to sticking it out for the long haul and eventually finding their bliss
@Kirk
Ya that's the only thing holding back MH from raging success in the west IMO. So many stop playing before actually taking the time to learn the game. That was MH3U's drawback.
But, MH4U was leaps and bounds better than 3U as far as trimming down the tutorial fat and showing players what they have to look forward to. Still have to learn to crawl before you can walk, and walk before you can fly, but MH4U at least gives you a taste of flight right from the get-go, and become loads more efficient with training and tutorials than 3U. And the story was a nice touch to keep people playing long enough to get hooked.
@JaxonH Well if this new Monster Hunter game fully solves that problem of a very long wind up time it could be the MH game that really breaks through and reaches massive success the Western market. It's not exactly the same as the other MH games but it could turn out to be the best in series if it mixes the best of the typical MH gameplay with a great action RPG type experience.
For a minute I thought this was going to be a cross-over game or something. lol
EDIT: Looks like it's going to be a true RPG game, it also looks like it would be perfect for the Wii U.Why Capcom?! TwT
@Kirk
I actually think MH4U could have done it had they advertised it enough. The AAA-quality cinematics and cutscenes along with interesting and colorful characters, and even some self-targeting jokes cracking fun at the long gathering missions of prior entries (with characters making remarks like "gathering mushrooms isn't what you came here for") really set the game apart from its predecessors. Heck even my brother got into it and he just couldn't get into MH3U, despite trying his hardest after watching me sink 600 hours into the game.
If only people played it I think they would become fans for life. The game really does nail it (at least, as far as MH goes, the latest entry is about as good as it'll ever get as far as sucking you in). What got me hooked and playing for 100 hours was the incredibly precise and technical combat. What kept me playing for hundreds of hours after the fact was the never-ending lust for the next armor set, the next activated skill, finding a slightly better talisman, trying to squeeze just ooooonnne more skill into my armor set. It's a perpetual lust for fashionable armor with superior skillsets, forever chasing something "just a little better".

...Their next spinoff game...should be...Monster Hunter Snap! x3
Wish we would get more Monster Hunter games but have a feeling this wont make it to the west.
Why are we expecting monster hunter 5 so early? We just got 4 U in the states, consider the amount of time between tri and 4... I think it is way to early to start expecting a new main-line monster hunter game.
This looks nice, REALLY nice
Looks awesome but probably won't be as good as 4 or any of the others but it should be good none the less
Really hope this comes to the west!
@JaxonH
Try playing with Japan! It doesn't work
I'm interested in this.
This sure doesn't look like Monster Hunter. Hopefully it's not just a clone of other existing rpg games.
Anybody else read his quote and think it was coming for another 5 years? I took "middle of development" too literally.
This looks pretty good but I'm just going to whine about MH4U not being on the Wii U.
I like it. As long as the character creator is still there, I'm so in. If it is't, I'm still in, but not as much. Lol.
I happen to like the cartoony art style. It works. I'm also curious to see how RPGish it will be. Hoping more of an action RPG.
take your time. monster hunter is a favourite, if not the most favourite game series of mine. but when Im playing it its usually for hundred hours and then I dont even want to look at for few years. given I am busy with mh4u Ill happily wait till 2017
DUDE. YESSSSSSS.
A monster hunter for the rest of us!!
I really like the style of this. Looks fun.
Looks amazing based on that trailer! I am definitely down with playing an actual rpg in the Monster Hunter world and the idea of riding possibly a Brachydios sounds really cool! I can only hope it comes stateside.
Sounds interesting, look forward to seeing some gameplay.
This looks more like what I anticipated Monster Hunter would be like, and seems like something I would enjoy much better than the main series games
I doubt this will be better than the main series, but it could be an interesting spinoff. I'll probably end up trying it out if it comes to the west.
I love Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate and 4 Ultimate, with that being stated I am super excited for this next MH game called Stories. I hope it comes State side soon after the Japanese release or a global release would be nice!
Trailer looks good, wonder how it will turn out.
I really love the cel shading, but I'll wait for more gameplay.
@The__Goomba Not wrong at all. I haven't dabbled in any MH so far, but this immediately captured my attention (/wink). I'm really dig'n the fact this is for N3DS. "On the go" adventures has me excited. Just picked up Xenoblade for my 3DS today, and will be getting lost in that this week. Happy gaming ^~^) #salute
I like the look, and the idea of a Monster Hunter RPG (I'm assuming it's some kind of take on a turn-based JRPG) is very compelling. I particularly like the idea of being able to tame certain monsters and use them as a mount for travel and fighting.
The world looks nice. I've always wanted a more contiguous version of the Monster Hunter map that shows more of how the areas are connected and how the hunters get around from place to place. MH4U did a good job of explaining this, but the idea of a more open and less chopped up Monster Hunter world is very enticing in terms of fleshing out the game's universe.
And the art style reminds me a lot of the new Legend of Zelda, which is a very good thing.
This looks..........COOL!
This looks interesting. I don't know why, but it feels like Dragon Warrior Monster (the originals) where they took a bit light-hearted tone. Loving the art style. Here's hoping we can see some gameplay footage sometime in the next few months.
I'm excited for this! The art style plus Monster Hunter depth add on to RPG mechanics, I'm so down. Since I can't play Fantasy Life 2 hopefully this will fill the void left in my heart.
It looks interesting I'd definitely like a more RPG feel on the game. I'll need to see some gameplay footage first, that and hope that it actually makes it ways outside of Japan(that's always good too).
Wow! This looks better then the main series. Go 3DS!
Just as I jumped off the Monster Hunter train this news may have me clamoring to get back on.
Looks interesting. I am a huge fan of Monster Hunter as well as RPGs so I will love to try out this fusion of both games!
Looks cute, and different that's for sure.
Well this certainly surprised me! Not a huge fan of MH but this looks great! It just might be my gateway to the series.
Never got into the MH series, I tried the Demos and it just wasn't for me what with the slow combat etc. But I often do play games for stories, and this looks so cute... what I'm trying to say is: I'm interested. Yes, colour me definitely interested.
Looks good but I like to see some gameplay first before I can build some excitement for this.
@Captain_Gonru
If you're not a MH fan, I can understand that. Me though- I won't be needing a review. I'll enjoy it simply because I love MH so much!
Of course, MH is all about managing animation frames, combining/crafting, recognizing tells, maximizing damage output and exploiting weaknesses, activating skill sets and wearing the most fashionable armor you can craft. I'm guessing a lot if that will translate over, even if it is an RPG. Which is a very good thing.
This looks pretty good! I liked it so far, I hope the gameplay will be great too.
@Captain_Gonru
I know the MH team is very careful about making sure this franchise stays too-notch quality. I don't think they would allow anything less than stellar regarding this RPG.
And if you ever wanna hunt, let me know in the MH forum. Always down to help new hunters rank up and learn the game more thoroughly...
Great news!
I'm interested at the very least. I picked up my first MH title on Friday night. I've played the demo for both 3 and 4. I didn't care for the MH3 demo so I never picked that game up. However, I couldn't stop playing the MH4 demo. So I'm only up to 2 star quest at the moment but so far I'm really enjoying the experience. So I'll be keeping my eyes on this one.
@Ash_Anne make that the west we in Europe like to play games too ya know!
RPG and Hunting combined? INSTABUY
WiiU please
Well, damn, I might actually be able to play something from this series now. Because like GTA and Mario platformers, I just do not catch on to these games.
I totally can't wait for this game, I really hope it comes to the usa
