When Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Edition was announced last week in Japan, many questioned when western players would get the chance to play Puzzle & Dragons Z, the 3DS forerunner which hit Japan a while ago and promptly sold over a million copies.
Today's Nintendo Direct provided the answer -- Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Edition is hitting the west this May and Puzzle & Dragons Z will be bundled with it.
Based on GungHo Online's incredibly popular smartphone title Puzzle & Dragons -- available on iOS and Android -- both 3DS titles will offer orb-matching puzzle gameplay with an RPG twist. Super Mario Edition will naturally boast characters from that series, along with an appropriately-themed adventure mode.

Our very own Kerry previewed the Japanese version of Puzzle & Dragons Z and rather liked it.

First !
They didn't mention an eshop release during the Direct. That has me a bit concerned.
I think that is great that they are doing a bundle pack. now i can find out what the fuss is all about.
Nice! When I first heard about the Super Mario Edition, I feared it would be an entirely new entry, and P&DZ wouldn'c come to the west, after all! But this here is a very generous deal!
@dwuuuu Grow up.
@dwuuuu
That sort of post can get you banned.
It looks quite fun, but I'll wait to learn more through reviews before I considering buying this one.
I hear it's quite heavy on micro transactions for success in Japan, to the extent that you can sell accounts for the game because you have rare monsters.
@Kaze_Memaryu
I was going to skip the Mario one because of my aforementioned "tired of Mario in general" sentiments, but seeing them packed together and being able to experience the original (er, original sequel) in that pack is hardly something I could be unhappy with.
I'm going to have to buy something with Mario on the cover, but I don't have to play the Mario part! This should be a good follow-up to my Puzzle Quest enjoyment. Hopefully it's not such a cheater as Puzzle Quest.
I hope that the mario edition is released on the E shop as a separate release.
I was expecting one or the other but not both and as a bundle to boot. My status is set to stun.
I left these type of games when I switched from iOS to 3DS.
I was kind of bored watching PAD:Z, moved on years ago and even my kids have movedo on to the Big Hero 6 clone, but the Mario skin has me hooked. I'm a sucker for an overworld map - really really wish Captain Toad had one in addition to the books, those mini cutscenes make me think it should have had one - and Wii U hasn't had any Mario RPG games yet, not even a Super Slugger sequel (trust me, there's a lite RPG in that baseball game) so this might just fit the bill.
If by any chance it has more than 1 save point like some of the other handheld puzzle games do it's day 1.
I honestly might get this, it looks interesting.
Huh, I wasn't expecting a retail bundle. I hope they'll get individual eShop releases. Still, this is good news.
Sold for the Mario part and now we get a 2 in 1 pack.
I am so happy for this, I am addicted to Puzzle & Dragon.
@brandonbwii don't worry, it was written in the french direct

Sounds interesting. Might have to get this. Never played it before, but love those puzzle games
I actually enjoyed the iOS "lite" version of P&Z (which was free btw) but it's obviously bare-bones unless you pay for the rest of the game, so now I have no choice but to get both games on 3DS in order to play the Mario edition. XP
I loved Puzzle Quest, so I'm definitely receptive to Match-3 gameplay as long as it is done in an interesting manner. The fact that they're including both versions of the game in the package, and that Z adds more RPG elements makes me feel good about this. I'll probably pick this up.
Outstanding news. Cannot wait
It looks fantastic. Two games for the price of one.
I've been hoping for Puzzle and Dragons Z to come to the west since it was first announced in Japan. And to see that it comes with the Mario edition?! This is super exciting
2 for the price of one, did I understand that correctly?
Even if it is just another Mario (and another match 3 from the looks of it) it still looks fun. I might buy it (maybe).
