In this rather exciting week there's still time for our traditional Nintendo Download Update fix. This latest offering from Nintendo of America is pretty strong, with a variety of titles on Wii U and 3DS full of potential, in addition to some classics and discounts. Let's get to the details, shall we?
Missed the European Nintendo Download Details earlier in the week? Fret not! The information you need is right here.
Wii U eShop
Family Tennis SP (Shin'en Multimedia, $4.99) - This franchise makes its Wii U début following some reasonable efforts on Wii and 3DS, with support of singles and doubles along with local multiplayer. We'll get into the swing of it for a review.
Electronic Super Joy: Groove City (Yazar Media Group, $4.99) - The premise for this one is bonkers (it's rated as mature); you help "Giant Robot Stripper" Jojo retrieve her laser nipples. That aside, this looks like a rather decent platformer, with a colourful aesthetic and what looks like a reasonable level of challenge. It could be fun, albeit a head scratcher in terms of its plot.
uWordsmith (CHUDCHUD Industries, $1.99) - As the title suggests this is all about stringing words together, with gameplay utilising both the GamePad and the TV. There are multiplayer modes, too, so we'll think up quite a few words for a review.
Wii U Virtual Console
Street Fighter 2010: The Final Fight (Capcom, $4.99) - An oddity in the Street Fighter franchise, as it's absolutely nothing like its 2D fighting siblings. It is 2D, but aside from that this NES title is a mind-numbingly tough action platformer spin-off with a sci-fi storyline — you can see what we think of it in our Street Fighter 2010: The Final Fight review.
Wii U eShop Throwback Sale
Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Nintendo, $9.99 until 22nd January, normally $19.99)
Super Mario 3D World (Nintendo, $44.99 until 22nd January, normally $59.99)
Super Mario Advance 3: Yoshi's Island (Nintendo, $5.99 until 22nd January, normally $7.99)
Pushmo World (Nintendo, $7.49 until 22nd January, normally $9.99)
Wii U Super Indie Connection Promotion
This promotion offers 60% off certain games if others in the promotion are already owned on the same Wii U. Details are below.
BIT.TRIP Presents: Runner 2 Future Legend of Rhythm Alien (Gaijin Games, $4.79 / £3.99 until 29th January)
Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition (Drinkbox Studio, $5.59 until 29th January)
Chasing Aurora (Broken Rules, $2.79 until 29th January)
SteamWorld Dig (Image & Form, $3.59 until 29th January)
Teslagrad (Rain Games, $5.99 until 29th January)
Swords & Soldiers (Two Tribes, $1.19 until 29th January)
Wii U eShop Permanent Discounts
LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham (Warner Bros., now $39.99, was $49.99)
The LEGO Movie Videogame (Warner Bros., now $19.99, was $29.99)
LEGO The Hobbit (Warner Bros., now $19.99, was $29.99)
3DS eShop
3D After Burner II (Sega, $5.99) - The first entry in this second wave of 3D classics from Sega, it brings some classic arcade action to the 3DS; you can pretend you're Maverick in eye-popping 3D, as an '80s marketing agency would say. We'll let you know what we think in a review.
Space Lift Danger Panic! (Springloaded, $2.99) - This looks like a rather intriguing arcade puzzle game in which you use a cannon (or tap on the touchscreen) to fire portals that transport falling allies. With a retro aesthetic and frantic arcade-style action this certainly looks promising; we'll get stuck into a review.
Quell Memento (Circle Entertainment, $3.99) - This cerebral puzzler promises over 150 levels and mechanical evolution over the last entry; we're pretty positive about this one's potential as we were big fans of Quell Reflect; we'll let you know what we think of this new entry soon.
Best of Mahjong (Cosmigo, $2.99) - It's lots and lots of Mahjong... well, that version of the game that involves swapping tiles around; there are 404 different layouts, apparently. We'll work on a review for you.
Soccer Up Online (EnjoyUp Games, $3.99) - This is an updated version of the original title, with the addition of online multiplayer along with all of the other modes. Unfortunately the core game isn't improved and the online can be laggy, as explained in our Soccer Up Online review.
3DS Virtual Console
Lufia: The Legend Returns (Natsume, $5.99) - Retro Nintendo gamers aren't short of RPG options, with this Game Boy Color effort from Natsume joining the list. It's a lengthy adventure with some positive points, but it's also a little derivative and uninspired; it's not bad, but there may be better options elsewhere. Check out our Lufia: The Legend Returns review for the full lowdown.
3DS eShop Throwback Sales

Oh, I wish they discount Teslagrad as part of the indie connection.
There's so few savings :[. Every time I read this I always think the Wii U eShop prices need to fluctuate more.
Nothing for me. I am saving up for the New 3DS XL. Damn Canada and being charged 30 bux more for it. It's going cost me $260 next month.
Already got SMG2 yesterday. Picking up Lufia fo sho.
Got Super Mario Galaxy 2 yesterday so, Afterburner.
Looking forward to the list of the Super Indie collection. For people who are willing to try some of them, there are plenty of good games on the WiiU eshop from indies.
I hope NA get's MH4 demo codes today.
It only took two months to do but Lufia finally came to NOA
If the indie sales are the same as Europe then I should be able to get Chasing Aurora, Teslagrad and SteamWorld Dig.
It looks like its just lufia and galaxy 2 for me this week. Kinda glad theres not much this week kinda need to start saving money for a lot of the stuff they showed during the direct yesterday.
3D Afterburner II.... SAAAY-GUUUUUH!!!!
Will pick up gba yoshi since I never played that one.
Will also switch over my DK trilogy whine to Axelay! Was hoping NOA would get that this week as it looks like a good game!
So no new Galaxy 2 review? Ah, oh well.
Wii U eShop Permanent Discounts
LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham (Warner Bros., now $39.99, was $49.99)
The LEGO Movie Videogame (Warner Bros., now $19.99, was $29.99)
LEGO The Hobbit (Warner Bros., now $19.99, was $29.99)
Meanwhile 2 year old Lego City Undercover is still $49.99. Yes, yes, a much better game I've been told, but an opportune time to drop it to $39.99 just to get it some exposure. It's hard to come across the game in the Wii U eShop just looking around, you pretty much need to type it in.
Have to wait another hour on the indie sale, probably something we want based on the EU deal.
Hail to the super hard game called Lufia.
I'll get SF2010.
For those who remember, Mario Galaxy was the highest scoring game from reviews ever. Some sites had given it perfect scores.
Got SMG2 yesterday
SMG2 since I never got that and SF2010 when Capcom puts it on sale.
@TruenoGT I have a feeling nintendo could put out mario is missing along with one nes rom already on 3ds and the truly die hard fans would call it a great week!
Nice! I'll definitely grab Street Fighter 2010, 3D After Burner II, and Lufia. Probably Lego Hobbit as well. Man, I wish we would get some more VC RPG's on Wii-U. How long ago was Breath of Fire announced and we still haven't seen it? Plus let's have the SNES Lufia games, and where is Square at with Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy?
@DBPirate This iteration of Mario Galaxy 2 is the same game they reviewed when it came out. There's nothing new to review.
Lufia is a definite by next week. I'll grab 3D After Burner II later, when Outrun comes out.
I got to review Soccer Up Online which is ok, but I got a spare code for Space Lift Danger Panic and it's awesome!
Nice! Probably getting After Burner 2. Either that or wait for Outrun.
Still no DK. I guess we can't have too many interesting VC releases in one week.
Nice, Electronic Super Joy is super awesome. I've played it on Steam and I recommend it to just about anyone.
After burner looks good.
@Yorumi I couldn't agree more.
I skipped out on Super Mario Galaxy 2 when it was first released. Played the first game, really liked it. Never bothered with 2 since the price was always absurdly high. Can't pass it up for $10.
@rjejr It has the misfortune of being published by Nintendo instead of Traveler's Tales normal publisher. I think you will be waiting a long time for the price to drop.
I will be picking up Super Mario Galaxy 2 because I have never played it. I have looked at it but was unwilling to pay the used price for it.
I played Mario Galaxy 2 all night. It just sucks you back in all over again. It really is a brilliant game and I really like not having to boot into a separate mode to play it. I will be buying alot of these Wii games at $9.99!!
$10 for SMG2 is a steal.
$10 for SMG2 is a brilliant deal. If you never played this game before, then you need to buy it ASAP.
@Darknyht - Won't lie, I'd like to buy LCU at a decent price, but I do actually feel bad for anybody who worked on it and want people to play it (people working on it just to make a buck and don't care if it sells or not I don't care about). Supposedly a good game that should be played, but with only 8 mllion Wii U owners the world and all these other games out there who even knows about it much less wants to buy it? $10 price cut on the front page of the eShop could make Nitneod a bunch of money they are getting now. I can wait, my backlog runneth over. Now just seemed like a god time with all those other Lego games on sale.
Nothing for me this week.
"The eShop offers page is yet to specify the games at the time of writing (they may match the equivalent European deals) but we'll update once details are available."
The page lists the same games as the European sale:
BIT.TRIP Presents: Runner 2 Future Legend of Rhythm Alien
Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition
Chasing Aurora
SteamWorld Dig
Teslagrad
Swords & Soldiers
http://www.nintendo.com/eshop/offers
Two Mario games on sale, one of which is superior to the other in almost every way yet less than a quarter the price.
I love old games. XD
I got smg2 yesterday. It's legit. But I only started it to see if you could play on the pad like the direct 'implied' ...so I'm just delving into my back log. Onto shovel knight. Next week punch out and citizens of earth!
Another week of nothing. Nintendo really needs to step there game up. Their sales are horrible compared to other services. Not to mention the VC is pathetic considering Nintendos roster. They've really been getting on my nerves lately with the limited supply of MM3D new 3DS's and bundle and these lame sales. Oh well, guess I'll hope they'll be willing to take my money next week.
That super indie connection sale is great news for me. Picking up Teslegrad and Guacamelee 60% off
So many whiners and complainers here
I will be buying alot of these Wii games at $9.99!!
I think only the first three will be on sale.
I still haven't changed my underwear, NoA!!
Super Mario Galaxy 2. bought & bought.
Lufia: The Legend Returns was my favorite game on the Gameboy Color! Downloading it as I type this
I don't get this. why do they stop releasing past VC games when new system like NES to SNES to GBA hit the VC?
Start releasing one for each system weekly. One for each one NES, SNES, GBC, GBA and Wii along with Indies. Bring on the 64, DS, and GC VC.
Come Nintendo get your act together.
i wanna play Donkey kong country 1-2-3 on my WII U , why is it so long to release !!! europe got it since almost 3months now :S
super Mario Galaxy2 is virtual console. Nothing out ? Who ever says that is just really picky. I know Nintendo needs major Improvement on the VC . I can't complain or whine this week cuz I got Galaxy 2 and Lufia. I think I will get some cold cuts too.
Yay! Teslagrad for me!
@Yorumi Bingo.
Afterburner. After M2 complained about sales of the first batch of games not being good enough, I feared for any future release in the States. I SO WANT Outrun so I need to do my part to support these games.
@technotreegrass I hope they do well. M2 treats classics with respect and clearly spend enough time on the release of each title to make them something special. Nintendo's own 3D classics efforts pale in comparison. Like you, I like to support these releases, too.
Sweet, 3D Afterburner. Classic Sega rocks!
Teslagrad is in my top three eShop games of last year (Stealth Inc. 2, Teslagrad, and Shovel Knight). I can't recommend it enough at that sale price. Get it!
Teslagrad is MINE!
Well, time to get Bit Trip Runner 2, Galaxy 2, and eventually Metroid Prime Trilogy!
The listed prices don't match what I see in Canada. Guacamelee is cheaper for me, Chasing Aurora more expensive, and I think SteamWorld Dig is different too... but the deals are very good for some awesome games.
Ended up buying 3 titles because of this sale, although I didn't really plan on buying anything when checking the eShop...
***Edit:***
Weird! The eShop prices have changed since I bought things. After taxes I paid $4.41 for Guacamelee but now the game is showing as (before taxes) $5.99 in the eShop. Canadian pricing, as of the time I write this, is provided below:
BIT.TRIP Presents: Runner 2 Future Legend of Rhythm Alien ($5.99)
Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition ($5.99)
Chasing Aurora ($4.79)
SteamWorld Dig ($4.39)
Teslagrad ($6.00)
Swords & Soldiers ($1.19)
Hmmm... a $2 "Canada tax" for Chasing Aurora is disappointing. I would have bought otherwise.
@grumblebuzzz As with the other VC games excluding controls and restore points
Only Axelay for me! but it wasn't an option.
Very tempted to 2x dip on SteamWorld Dig at that price. I will get Guacamelee! and Teslagrad (the only two games I don't own in some format from the list).
Woot!
Wish the sale was getting more traction/awareness!!!
I definently reccommend Guacamelee! For that price. A genuine steal.
yus! afterburner!!
This is an amazing! I can't believe there are insane eeople here saying these sales suck. You're crazy. These are brilliant! I am so getting Guacamelee! Might even get a few of the other indie games on the list and definitely getting SMG2!!
That Guacamelee discount, ugh I really hope I get some money soon because I don't want to miss out on some nice sales.
@Retro_on_theGo I got Gaucamelee for free on xbl in addition to several free retail games. Just saying.
@Superryanworld D: When was this? Was it one of those gold deals? Would have loved to taken advantage of that. Never heard of it. Still, 60% off is a very nice sale as well.
Anyone know what the file size is for Metroid Prime Trilogy? Wanting to get that when it hits but I have limited space left. Don't have the spare funds to buy a hard drive right now.
@sleepinglion M2 treating classics with respect is why they should be in talks with Game Freak. They'd be willing to do the work that Game Freak doesn't want to do to bring the main series Pokemon games to VC.
Might consider Afterburner, but other than that, nothing for me.
As soon as I saw that I could get both Guacamelee and Teslagrad for 60% off I instantly purchased them since I have been wanting them for a long time!
@DBPirate Welcome to ten years ago?
Nice! Guacamelee for me! My patience paid off!
Come on! No separate entry for Super Mario Galaxy 2? Sure I've got the Wii disc, but at $9.99 it's an impulse buy and nice to be able to play without the disc and keep my old save file.
@Retro_on_theGo sixty percent off is a good deal.I think the game was free back in July and I'm not sure if the same deal was available on 360.
That Teslagrad sale is tempting!
Are Guacamelee and Teslagrad worth grabbing at $6 each?
@Yorumi
There were lots of games on the Wii that supported the Classic Controller, in fact it was probably close to 100 not 2. Nintendo themselves probably published about 10 games that supported it.
As for inferior services/overcharging well online on my Wii U is free and always seems to work; whereas the PS4 is costing us $50 for online and doesn't even work a lot of the time. I know which one offers me better value.
afterburner for sure!! can't wait for outrun!! i wish sega would jump on wii u vc already!! what are they waiting for????
Good week. Already got Galaxy 2. Might get Teslgrad.
I have already bought Galaxy 2 on disc. I need Fire Emblem on Wii!
As usual, 3DS games and offers are better than those on Wii U. Please Nintendo!
Wow. $10 for literally one of the greatest games ever made. That's insane. If you don't own it you have to buy it. If you don't you don't have any business playing video games. Seriously.
I'm a little peeved about teslagrad going on sale now when i just bought it... Oh well.
@CaPPa you forgot to mention the ps3.Its online service is free.It has a vast library of ps1 classics that only cost five bucks.Ps2 games are ten dollars.Fifty dollars a year (the price of a retail game) is a superior value for ps plus considering all the (free games) and countless discounts users get every single month.Im a nintendo fan but c'mon man.
@joey302 Shining Force 3 was not fully released outside Japan. I finish it without knowing the langauge, and they are f**ing good!
@joey302 Shining Force 3 was not fully released outside Japan. I finish it without knowing the langauge, and they are f**ing good!
@Superryanworld
I didn't get much use out of the free PS+ games on the PS3 because I'd already bought most of the games I was interested in. It is good for discounts though and it did pay for its time on PS3 just in that alone; but for the PS4 it hasn't been as great yet.
Nintendo has been good to me though, with free online, free games and the dpp for a year.
@CaPPa I have to agree with you regarding the ps4.Ive had a great time with my wii u&3ds and 2015 is going to see some amazing games.
@ThomasBW84
i think you forgot the racing game WRC.
and it also has a demo.
After Burner, fo' sho'. Are we not getting Metroid Prime Trilogy at the same time as Galaxy 2? Perhaps I misheard.
@rjejr It was my first game on the console and outside of a nightmare loading time when going into certain areas it was fun. I also tend to agree with you on the pricing.
The biggest thing that helped me move to Gamecube from PS2 was the price. I picked up the console when it hit $99.99 (let's just stop and reflect on that for a moment, an awesome console for $99.99) because of it's price and because there was a solid library of Player's Choice games out there that was $19.99 and $29.99. I was quickly able to amass a decent library at an affordable price.
Even now, when games hit that $20 price point it generally isn't a question of if, but when will I buy them unless it is a title I have zero interest in.
@Darknyht - Yeah, when I heard the Gamecube dropped to $99 was when I really looked into it - but it was the 4 Players Choice games that sold me. I think Starfox Adventures, Luigi's Mansion and Star Wars were $20 each and Super Smash Bros was $30. So I bought the system and all 4 2 days after the price drop. I already knew about the games and Gamecube since it's announcement but I had a PS and Dreamcast to keep me busy until the price dropped.
I wonder when we get the $99 Wii U w/o the Gamepad? Don't laugh, if they can sell a $99 Wii w/o internet access, they can sell a $99 Wii U w/ a Wiimote. The caveat being the Gamepad is sold separately for $79, like the X1 Kinect and PS4 camera.
@rjejr These days that doesn't make me laugh as it isn't too far of a stretch these days, but I do think it is still unlikely unless they find another way to make Amiibo work sans Gamepad. I do wonder though when we will see a $200 Wii U with 32 GB and a $250-300 Wii U with 128 GB storage option.
I know that still sounds high for the storage, but unfortunately Solid State storage is still costly if you want good solid state that will have a decent lifespan. It's one thing when it is a USB that can be tossed, it is another when it is permanently attached to the console. Failing that, I wish they would over a $250 Wii U with External HDD drive included.
for me lufia and after burner 2
hope we get donkey kong land next week
@Darknyht - oops, forgot about the amiibo.
I don't see Nintendo ever changing the 32GB, but it is odd they don't sell a Ntineod branded external HDD for double what it should be, either a larger plug-in type or a smaller portable 1 w/ the Y cable.
Nyko is making 1 for the PS4, matching the Wii U white should be easy.
The indie deal is too sweet to pass up! been waiting to get steamworld dig!
@rjejr
Why would they when there are sooo many cheaper options available? I get it that people would want to buy Nintendo branded things, but it seems like a waste, no?
@RoomB31 - "I get it that people would want to buy Nintendo branded things"
If you look around forums over the years there are lots of people who will NOT buy 3rd party accessories of any type. Heck some people pay way too much money for Monster HDMI cables. I think there are soccer moms and dads out there who would be delighted to see Nitneod offer a specific external HDD that they knew they could buy and it would work. I bet a lot of parents buying a Wii U for their kids have no idea what a "Y" cable is. I bet there are a lot ot families with home computers who still don't even have external HDD for their PCs. Well not until a PC failure wipes out years worth of digital photos and they buy 1 for their new PC
Of course I also think Nitneod would sell more Wii U if Amazon (US) itself actually sold it, and not just unknown 3rd parties on their website, so what do I know?
@rjejr
Educating adults/parents is always a difficult task, I mean in that case I would just release a larger HDD in new Wii U models, and that would ease having to educate them.
As per Amazon, they've had some beef with Nintendo for a while, I can't recall why, but it started with the 3DS, maybe even earlier, sadly its not the place to shop for a Wii U and its a shame.
I grabbed Mario Galaxy 2 and I plan to pick up teslagrad tonight when I get home
Chasing Aurora is $3.20, not $2.80. Just wanted to point that out.
Super Mario Galaxy 2 for $10?! Score. I never got around to playing that one.
Yay! Asterix! X3
