'For Glory' is an online mode in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS that houses the game's most competitive players. Unlike the 'For Fun' alternative, it prevents the use of items and allows Final Destination versions of each stage only, ensuring a fair game to determine who the better combatant truly is. Many players strive to rack-up a solid win-loss ratio - both in 1-on-1 and 2v2 situations - and will do anything to achieve this.
Smashboards (a forum for the Smash community) member Turbopasta has recently discovered a virtually unbeatable strategy in 2v2 matches. Both players of the team must choose Pac-Man, and the first player must use their Up+B special ('Pac-jump') to create a trampoline underneath their Pac-Man. This is then followed by the second player jumping on the trampoline and activating their own 'Pac-jump' special. Bear in mind that the trampoline can only be bounced on (by any character) up to three times before it vanishes. After this first sequence has started, the players must then alternate their trampoline special by repeatedly spamming Up+B as they jump off of the previous trampoline. It's worth noting that no character can be KO'd by going too far off screen without being launched by an opposing character. Therefore, the two Pac-Man users are invulnerable from the opposing team's attacks. However, there is a ray of hope - players who use characters with vertical projectiles such as Pikachu, Ness, and Pit will be able to counter this strategy.
Turbopasta has also given a warning for those people looking to try this tactic:
One thing that's important to mention here: if you ONLY do up-B inputs on the controller, the game will think you are idling and kick you after 45 seconds or so. The way to counteract this is by doing a quick FULL CIRCLE MOTION on the directional stick while not pressing the B button. Immediately once the the rotation is done, go back to spamming up-B. I found it best to verbally communicate with my doubles partner so we could take turns doing this, so as to reduce the risk of moving away from the other player, if only by a little bit.
Check out the video below to see how this works - and how frustrating it must be for the other team. Of course, if the opposing team hasn't committed suicide already, their inevitable KO will follow via the falling Bob-ombs when the match reaches 'Sudden Death'.

Wow. Now people are gonna complain about Pac-Man...
Time to ban Pac-man
or atleast ban players using this.
Why do people do this stuff?
There's a really easy way to fix this actually. Just patch it so that if Pac-Man climbs too high vertically, he will be K.O.'d. Problem solved, no banning.
Well, now I have a use for Shulk's jump monado art...
Seriously, though, stop. Do they even get a feeling of satisfaction from winning this way?
The counter is pretty simple. If they do this, simply jump on one of the trampolines. It'll mess the whole thing up. If not, send a projectile over or lightly hit them as spacing is key.
I gotta be honest though, I was laughing at how stupid this was. XD
@Prof_Clayton That's if you don't waste haste before a few seconds of them setting up.
That was... oh my XD
These are the kind of things in games that woukd be super fun to discover if people wouldn't start abuse of them (which we all know is gonna happen -.-; ).
I guess a new small update will be needed, althought I wonder how many players can perform this in tandem perfectly...
I'd rather lose. That method looks boring to play.
I'm pretty sure sonic could quickly chase then Up-B a head of them to knock em out in the Sudden Death part. Other than that. Scrubs.
@DiscoGentleman
seriously. Crappie like this is what made people on brawl hard to deal with.
Time for another patch! This kind of stuff is fun to mess with offline but it should have no place in online matches.
Moyn, Oy Coyd do this easily.
Attack them during lower set up.
Don't play online. Problem solved!
I'm surprised no one found this sooner figuring how many people are playing this game. I think this is funny but it is funny offline where it only affects people you know and are having fun with. Online this is a real d-bag move to pull. I wonder now how many people are going to choose pacman now in 2v2.
@dadajo - I wonder how many Pikachu's, Ness's and Pit's will be used now.
Such a sensationalist headline when this strategy can be countered by characters like Ness and Dark Pit.
@Jazzer94 - But you can't tell who's the opponents using until the match begins.
LOL i'd rather lose every single game than to start using cowardly exploits like these.
F U to these exploiters ruining the fun for others.
An easy fix would be to make Pac Man interact with another Pac Man's trampoline the same way he reacts to his own.
This was actually pretty funny to me
Meta Knight had that dumb infinite wall glide thing, so I can't see how this, requiring two people, is worse. It just looks like a fun way to troll your friends once and then never use again because your friends will hate you if you spam it. I doubt online will be affected TOO much, although Ninty will probs patch it anyways
@blackbox64 Or update so Pac-man can only bounce on his own. I mean, what's the point of him using another trampoline when he already has one of his own.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTRdl82FzuY
Use ROB to beat them.
@ReindeerDasher
Sounds good to me.
@DiscoGentleman Its a shame, what's even worse is that the people who use this tactic, somewhere in their twisted little minds actually consider this a legitimate victory
That's pretty messed up. Kinda funny though. I would have been mad if I ran into something like that. I use Peach, Ike, Diddy Kong, and Paultina. I don't think there would be a way for me to reach em.
Another tactic would be Mega Man I would think. Jumping twice and using the rush coil to get as high as possible, followed by pressing up+a to use his tornado could work, but that's yet to be seen.
Wow.
hmm this would infuriate me in a ranked match haha
Rob can stop them very easily.
But if they keep doing this, the Pac-Men will die due to lack of oxygen....
Lol the things people will do in an attempt to preserve their K/D ratio... I don't see this tactic being used very much considering how much precision it requires to perform.
...Main reason why I rarely play online with random people anymore.
@GeminiSaint Well that's unfair since every other character gets an advantage from a Pac-mans trampoline with an added jump but with your idea, Pac-Man gets sent to helpless mode with the trampoline being red or not if it's another Pac-Man's trampoline.
@SamirMalik The trampoline is a unique special B recover. It has it's pros and cons. Pros, you get alot of height for each jump before it disappears and you can set it up to where the trampoline is red and an opponent lands on it, enters helpless mode, and falls to their death. Cons, it's not the fastest recovery when you are trying to get back from the near bottom, and someone can land on the trampoline right before it turns red when Pacman tries to and then he falls. If Sakurai's team update Pac-Man to not able to jump on other Pacmans trampolines then a Pac-Man vs Pac-Man can't take advantage of the trampolines cons.
@Porky I said for another Pac-man. Not another player.
@SamirMalik Yes.. I know. Did you read my post? Basically, every other character than Pac-man gets an advantage from another Pac-Man's trampoline; is that what you want?
@Porky Want is not really it. A recommendation is what it is.
@Azikira I believe this has been around since the 64 if you modify the game to have Infinite jumps. Same goes to Melee and Brawl. I guess you really have to attack someone to count it as a KO.
Winning that way is no better than cheating.
Why would people want to play the game like that?
@SamirMalik Which isn't the beat since what you're asking is to not have Pac-man use other Pac-Man players' trampolines (may I add may be impossible and unfair for one specific character to phase through while other characters can interact with it and gain an extra jump/advantage) next suggestion please (:.
I think the best fix for this is to limit the amount of trampolines Pac-Man can spawn until he lands back on the ground. I think 3 to 5 trampolines is a fair limit. It would still be a bit of a problem in Sudden Death but at least the other players would be able to punish these kinds of people.
People should abuse this online so it gets noticed and patched. Exploits like this could make Smash 4 into the next Melee.
@Yosher Or give Pac-Man a DIFFERENT recovery.
I guess i found my new main,ah Pacman you're an unstoppable badass.
@midnafanboy Rob, Ness, Pikachu, Pit, and Dark Pit(?) says hi. ( ̄~ ̄;)
@Nazo_no_Hikari I doubt they're gonna do THAT much. It would require all-new animation, new balancing tests, and all that. It's an idea for Smash Bros. 5 though, if Pac-Man returns there!
@Nazo_no_Hikari I don't like ROB never did never will, i hate Pit, Dark Pit is a stupid clone why would i use him?Pikachu annoys me so nope. And Ness is the only guy in your list i care about.
Remember, folks, the game has a report function. I'm sure the admins wouldn't hesitate to ban people for this.
@Azikira i would say stop him from bouncing off another pac man's trampoline but that also works
Sakurai should had just make Pac-Man use the trampoline once and not by anyone else. Also there should had been hazards (like Boos, fireballs, etc.) appearing to annihilate those who waste too much time if the characters in the game is not fighting for too long (like say 5 minutes) just like the multiplayer Battle Mode in Super Mario Bros. 3.
i wonder if megaman can reach up to that height
jus the kinda people i like to run into in for glory. imma make them dc everytime they see mii online. yellow yoshi joins the match.
Report, ban, play. And while patching it, be sure to make toon links down a attack bounce back the way it does like greninjas on a hit.
Oh I'm just saying.
It is idiot sad losers like this that make online gaming boring. Followed closely by people who quit out before the end of a game. Thank god nintendo saw fit to punish people like this.
Third worst gamer is those who insist on using autoguard in beat em ups even when they know how to play the game, most of all street fighter iv 3D.
@D_Reza714 what????
Oh my gosh. I know his recovery move was a little op, but this is ridiculous. Good thing I don't play online team matches.
You guys look at this kind of thing too seriously. I had a lot of fun seeing the video, creativity and outside-the-box thinking like this is always interesting to see as far as I'm concerned. Sakurai will just add a modification sooner or later to make it impossible to execute (since they go way outside the blastzone where they'd normally die, just make that lethal for Pac Man despite not receiving a hit), and naturally tournaments will ban the "technique" immediately.
Besides, it's not like this is unavoidable. Even if it catches you and your teammate off-guard the first time, once you get to Sudden Death you only need to rush and kill them as they begin spamming B-Up - the two guys in the video were just too slow and clumsy to land a hit there. On top of that, Pit/Dark Pit's arrows reportedly can hit them... anything else is a no-go once they are all the way up there, though.
So yeah, I'd rather applaud people for their inventiveness than get upset over something you're very unlikely to suffer much from.
Pac-Ban FEVER!!!
Seriously guys, stop whining!
Or rather, be grateful that this was found now, when Nintendo can nerf this loop! Also, how can you be surprised that this happens in a game with 40+ characters? Every other fighting game has similar balancing issues when the roster is too large to reliably keep in check.
So when spectating, anytime you see double pacman bet 1,000?
Also, Rule of Falcon - Always bet 1,000 every time on Captain Falcon, works 80% of the time!
I don't really see how this need to be patched. You can really easily counter this with almost every character. Even if your character can't can't counter it 9 times out of 10 you teammate will be able to counter it, also patching a move of a character can break a character.
Counter-strategy:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTRdl82FzuY
Pac-Man is the new Little Mac.
This kind of stuff just ruins online matches. This and stuff where you go against two Charizards who do nothing but his side B the whole time. Once my brother and I played against a Wario and Samus team where Samus just stood on the edge shooting projectiles while Wario road back on forth on his motor cycle. Another time on a 1 on 1 match the person I was playing was being Villager, and all they would do was cling to the side, hop up and shoot his slingshot, and then grab the side again. Stuff like that irritates the heck out of me and makes me wish people would just play the game the way its supposed to be played.
Still, it seems like you could stop them from getting together and doing it if you were fast enough.
@retro_player_22 That's one of Pac-Man's custom moves, funny enough.
Pac-Man never ceases to dominate.
Sounds like a lot of work. Why don't you just try and win by skill?
What the Pac?
I would love to see Nintendo quietly fix this by insta-banning any team caught using it. All they'd have to do is check for teams staying out of the top of the screen for longer than a reasonable amount of time without doing any damage to their opponents.
They could also simply take away the end game for this cheat by making it so sudden death kills you if you're off the top of the screen when the bombs start dropping.
People whining about this also need to remember it's publicity means it will be patched out sooner or later, and it would never work in a tournament setting where actual money's on the line because nobody in their right mind would see this strategy and not immediately kick the offending team out of the tournament for cheating.
@retro_player_22 Couldn't disagree more. Nerfing the trampoline because some people have found a way to abuse it is not the answer. The variety of moves and the ways they can affect matches is what makes Smash Bros fun, and is way more important than a couple of jokers finding a way to abuse something. It sounds to me like if you made Smash Bros every character would have the same move set and the game would be dull and boring. No thanks!
@GeminiSaint oh sweet. Luckily Rob is one of my favorite characters
It's always fun to see people complaining when other players don't play the game in the way those people want them to play it...
It's far from unbeatable, pretty much all of link's projectiles can remedy this. Eh, that's why I play 1 on 1.
Was funny to watch. Pretty sure it would have been funny to encounter it online for the first time too. But if you keep running into people doing this the entire fun aspect of competitive play is removed, because it isn't competitive in any sense. Really wouldn't enjoy playing this way myself.
I find it odd that this actually works…
Remember the Yoshzilla bug from the 3DS version(not checked if it works in the WiiU version yet)?
Well I discovered that if you take Yoshzilla too big usually that technique, then it KOs him via a ring out because he's too big. Though maybe the fact that the eat move is an attack means it counts as a launch when he bursts out of the egg?
AKA luigi ladder.
This is something that you'd have to practice a lot to get this perfect... Also I'm sure people have found countermeasures to prevent a double PAC Attack from getting high enough up..
@B3ND3R (and all the other similar comments) I tested this with a friend offline. It is the easiest thing to do. It takes no skill whatsoever. You just both spam up b next to each other as fast a possible. It takes absolutely no practice or precision.
What a bunch of losers to actually play online this way.
@WaxxyOne Good job, me and my other Pac friend is gonna try it then.
This isn't so much 'cheating' as it is 'griefing'.
Cheating is the 'snaking' technique that made it impossible for me to play Mario kart DS online.
EDIT Okay I hadn't seen the last part of the video with the sudden death bob-bombs. I guess stay on the lookout for pac-teams when playing online from now on.
The winner/s should be decided with standard tournament rules in the first place, you know, RULES THAT MAKE SENSE, those being, the team with more stock and less percent wins, none of this Sudden Death garbage.
This is just more reason that should be the case.
I also hope this encourages Nintendo to continue with patches instead of abandoning it other than fixing game breaking bugs like is currently planned.
Just seems like the game needs a patch. Funny to see, but still annoying. Oh, and in the patching process, Nintendo should take a very good look at Ganondorf's grab Ganondorficide. Just yesterday, I played a 4-player For Glory, and I was the victim of 2 Ganondorficides! That was so messed up. Sure, I could have avoided him, but... I was concentrating on dealing with the others....
@VolcanoFlamesNL - Thats kinda the point of Ganondorfs Side-B when used in the air. I like to jump in front of Ganondorf when he's recovering and see if the player will Side-B and try to grab me before I jump away. This can lead to easy mind games and I tend to jump off stage after them to make them use it but miss so they miss the ledge.
@Giygas_95 - That Charizard problem can be easily solved. Just hang at the edge of the stage (But leave a small gap between you and the edge) and block all Side-B's. Hopefully if your opponent is stupid. You'll jump and dodge their next Side-B which will should have them fly off stage. They shouldn't be able to make it back, but if so. Happy Edge Guarding. Even Liitle Mac's and Shulk's counter should have wide enough range to hit and send it back at double.
Hit Wario with a down-air after jumping over him or hit him with projectiles. Or even Samus's own projectiles. Robin's Elfire get's Wario off pretty well.
As for Villager. That's so easy I'll let you figure it out.
I've been in these situations, alot. Don't make it sound so whinny.
It would be so annoying to play that matchup online.
This doesn't seem like a big deal to me, but like others have said it defeats the purpose of playing the game and it's stuff like this that makes anonymous online play less than desirable for many. You still cannot beat the madness of face-to-face matches and adding amiibos to the mix and the new play modes are extra nice.
It's a good thing I only play 1v1. First the Game & Watch/Pikachu Super Bucket thing, now this...
Just make it so they get a KO from going to high. You could kill yourself in 64 that way.
Never seen this online, and I doubt you'll see too much of it. What I do see online is way way too many LIttle Macs and Shulks. Not that this is a balancing issue, really, I just get tired of fighting the same characters all the time. I'm always happy when I see an Olimar in there. He's probably the rarest, and he never wins, but I'm glad some folks give it a shot.
@MetalK9 Yeah, the problem with Wario is he can get out another motor cycle immediately though. Still, thanks for the tips. I've kind of taken a break from online play for a while, but I may need that advice some time in the future.
Also, online lag messes me up big time which is especially frustrating considering I can do extremely well offline but then do horribly online. It throws my timing way off. Can't tell if it's my connection or the other person's, but I sure wish online could be as smooth as offline.
Sorry, I guess I do sound kind of whiny...
@earthboundlink - Olimar never wins aye? Never? NEVER?! Lemme' tell you this... +50% grab combo!! MWUHAHAHA!
@MetalK9 lol, I'm sure he wins sometimes, but I've never seen it happen. When I play online it's just a Little Mac/Shulk-fest, with a few Greninjas thrown in for good measure.
Also rarely seen online: Luigi, Robin, Peach, Samus. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen Peach online in the few hundred matches I've played.
Hahaha, nice trolling. Hilarious, but annoying. Hope it gets patched though. That's the type of thing that nobody saw coming in testing....
A small correction: you can KO from going too far off screen without being launched by another player, if it's to the side. Just not the top.
First, im sure Nintendo will easily patch this if it really is an issue, so going up will be a ko too.
2nd, what kind of gamer thinks this is funny? Just play the game and beat people fair. How hard is that?
...it just never ends...
@WaLzgi
...or very easily release a patch that fixes this...I don't know why EVERYONE doesn't support the destruction of exploits...oh yeah, because people exploit eploits to win . Wouldn't want to have fair matches would we?
> Villager's legendary Up-B can reach those suckers - once up there, he could bounce off one of the Pac's trampolines to return to an attack position and merely tap them to get a star-KO.
As other people have said as well, fighters like Pikachu and the Pits can strike these guys with their long-reaching projectiles.
If these cowards want to run, let them run. We can catch them.
@Jollyjulian - Villager wouldn't be able to reach them if they got a head start. And if you actually caught up and they hit 'you'. You'll never get them again. They're still going up no matter what.
that's freakin hilarious and complete poop.
Oh lawd patch it
@MetalK9 How pessimistic
That was hilarious, even though it took forever to finish out. Perhaps the longevity is its own facet of the dumb brilliance... Cool how the Cap/Link duo tried to handle the Bob-ombs after a bum-rush failed them, but alas.
I doubt I'd ever care enough for a wins/loses ratio, and I'd prolly laugh the first few times someones pulled this off (and harder if it failed them, by us or their own), but then I'd start getting peeved in want of a rightful match.
I really hate players like this... Such a balless exploit. Smash Bros. is a party fighter. Glory mode is a competitive mode. If you're not going to "compete" by fighting, then take the party somewhere else and stop wasting the time of players who wish to play the game as intended.
And the nerve displayed by this db describing this cowardly maneuver like it's a credible winning strategy is insulting.
incoming patch from Nintendo in 3...2...1..
Yeah thas pretty random and lame for a Ranked match... Boring to say the least..
