Just recently we reported that Best Buy was cancelling duplicate orders for the Majora's Mask 3D New Nintendo 3DS bundle; after seeing eBay flooded with pre-orders for sale of the highly anticipated hardware, it could arguably have been considered a positive move. On the downside, however, those in the same household or families ordering multiple units were seeing much desired systems taken off their orders.
It seems that those cancellations may have been due to stock concerns rather than any deliberate philosophy, however, as it's emerging that others are having orders cancelled for their single systems. It's apparently down to stock deliveries not matching orders taken, and the retailer is offering those that are affected $50 off an order for the New Red or New Black Nintendo 3DS as consolation.
Some may opt to use their discount on something else, of course, and it seems a pity that - once again - mistakes are being made in accepting pre-orders that can't be fulfilled.
If you have ordered this system from Best Buy it's worth checking your emails; here's hoping other retailers are able to fulfil their pre-orders in full.

Nintendo seems to be bleeding potential money these days.
my order is still standing, I put my order in within minutes of them opening it up (I got lucky) and @stuffgamer1 who ordered at the same time is still getting his as well, however one of our friends got his cancelled and is currently RAGING at Best Buy and taking it up as far the ladder as he can.
I was one of them. By the way, the $50 off promo code can be applied to any online purchase, it's not just for the one of the two New 3DSes.
They really should stop the reseller-market in one way or another. They may very much crash the industry, by making people WAY too much, and therefore taking their ability to buy another game as well, for example.
And why? Greed...
It is a sad thing to see also singular orders were cancelled. I hope Europe won't follow, but I'm under the impression there's less resellers here. Sadly, not none. FAR from none...
I'm glad they at least gave us 50 dollars credit. Hopefully when it releases there will be more to come.
$50 off a New 3DS XL is a pretty good deal, but folks ordered the MM version for a reason. It's amazing how pre-orders, the one thing you should be able to count on, cant even be fulfilled between the TRU amiibo situation last year, and now Best Buy with the N3DS XL this year.
These companies need to reform and solidify their pre-order policies NOW before the next limited/high demand item is announced.
@YashaStepanovic
I ordered when it first went live too and I still got cancelled, it's BS and I'm pissed. I only ordered one and I know I would have been among the first, mine should have been one of the last to be canceled.
@DTFaux
Agreed, and I'm not buying anything from either of these jokers again if they can't handle something so simple. I would find it hard to believe that Nintendo would go and tell them after the fact that they're getting less units than what was promised, so I think it's on their end. Of course Nintendo could solve this altogether by not making so few.
smells like fertile ground for a class action lawsuit.
@pyrotek85 I'd be pissed too, it is BS and I hope bestbuy has a better way of rectifying it than a simple discount, they promised you stock and didn't deliver, they deserve all the flak you can give them
@FritzFrapp I saw that now that mine has been canceled i can only hope we get the smaller one.
Well we all have the scalpers the thank for this.
IMO Nintendo along with Sony, and MS need to take action against places like Amazon and Ebay and make it so people cannot sell current gen games and systems on Amazon Ebay for a mark up. If they did that then you would see this scalper bs stop.
@YashaStepanovic
I've still got mine as well. Still got my fingers crossed. I'm still sorry for the numerous users on here who don't, though.
So pre-order = lottery ticket?
Not placing blame though b/c we really don't know what happened. Ninnteod gave BB a # they coudlnt fulfill, BB got a # and decided to take more pre-orders than they knew they were getting, BB e-order system has issues and was overwhelmed and accidentally took more pre-orders than it was supposed to.
We'll never know. Sorry to all the people who thought "pre-ordering" meant you were guaranteed to get whatever it was you pre-ordered. Good on BB for giving the $50 in store credit. What is Ntinedo doing as an apology to all it's fans? Not just for this, seems like it could be strictly BB's fault by that $50 offer, but this, amiibo, Gamecube adaptor. Its just one thing after another with them, can't blame BB, TRU, Amazon and the scalpers when the common thread is Nitnedo. Its getting to be to common of an occurrence to give N a free pass.
Well haven't got mine cancelled as of yet and I didn't order till way late. I ordered after it re-opened hours later but I did use gift cards to pay it off in full.
@FritzFrapp Excellent statement. NOA is swinging and missing again. "If you build it, they will come". If you don't build enough it's lost sales and irritated customers who really want it and are left to the thieves of eBay and Amazon. Top if off with lost software sales and a hit to revenue. More units would likely help resolve this.
I'm one of those poor souls to have gotten my order cancelled. It's so irritating, to say the least. Now I'm just not going to buy a New 3DS until there is either an awesome themed New 3DS XL or the regular New 3DS comes to the US. Other than that, Nintendo can enjoy not having my money.
But I did get to use those $50 on buying Majora's Mask 3D. So at least I'm getting the game for free. That's something, I guess.
@FritzFrapp I love those faceplates! This is why I wanted the smaller N3DS.
I dont know, if I had preordered, I would gladly take those $50 without complaining. I personally liked the Monster Hunter design a lot more, even though I'm not into the series and won't be buying until I know for sure the regular one won't come out
My orders are still good, hope this doesn't start happening in the UK.
Yeah i'd be pretty steamed if this happened to me.
@rjejr
Well, the common thread is Nintendo items because there's so many Nintendo collectors. Hardly anyone collects for Sony or MS. Which is why retro Nintendo games are sky high in value but only a select few on other consoles, and even those aren't worth nearly as much.
Scalpers know where the money is at, and that's with the Nintendo collecting community.
I pre ordered, got an email yesterday canceling the order with a $50 code.
Fine by me. I didn't really want that ugly Majora's Mask new3DS XL anyways. I already locked in the Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate new3DS bundle. I saw the Majora's Mask 3DS for sale on GS website when I ordered the MH edition, and chose to pass on it cause I didn't really want it. It wasn't until later when I accidentally stumbled upon it on Best Buy's website (after it was supposedly sold out everywhere) that I figured what the heck, I can always cancel, right?
Glad I did, too. That decision just landed me a nice, crisp 50 dollar bill. Thank you Best Buy! Don't mind if I do! Saved $200 I didn't need to spend AND got $50 on top of it. Well done.
@YashaStepanovic And what does he hope to accomplish? They won't make stock appear from nowhere
@Shambo Why? They don't lose anything to scalpers. If anything, scalpers aren't really competition since they buy from retailers first and use higher prices.
@Sergio151 They know what a "limited edition" is. It's not a regularly released product.
@rjejr At the same time, why would they owe anything to their fans? Should they hand out $50 eShop vouchers for "cancelling" orders they never took? Also, have you paid attention to the comments? Most of everyone is blaming Nintendo.
Good lord these limited stock, sell out, and cancellation issues just keep getting worse. Get your act together Nintendo!
Man I feel for you guys that got your orders cancelled. Until Feb 2 I am cringing when I see an email from best buy as I have a bunch of Amiibo pre-orders and fear they won't meet them (meta knight by mail and shiek, mega man, and bowser store pickup).
Happened to me too! My brother and I each ordered a system with the same card, and ended up getting our orders reduced. But just last night, we got this exact email.
Good thing our local GameStop had a couple of preorder slots open, so we were able to get our systems there! The exact same thing happen with my preordered copy of Smash Wii U bundled edition, BB ran out of stock after they had already excepted my order. Again, I was lucky enough to find a copy of the bundle at GameStop! Who'da thunk!?
I will NEVER buy any video game related items from BestBuy again. GameStop>>>>>>>BestBuy
...
I just bought the regular version, even though there were several Majora's Mask and Monster Hunter editions available at the time.
I wondering if its people who already posted them on ebay is making the biggest uproar.
@WingedSnagret
You mean BestBuy? Nintendo clearly isn't the problem here. BestBuy should not have accepted more preorders than stock made available to them. Besides, its a Legend of Zelda limited edition item, of course its going to sell out in a day! Not to mention, there has been an unbelievable amount of hype for this game, being a fan favorite and all.
Disagree with me if you wish, but I believe Nintendo had very little to do with this problem.
I could never get my hands on one. Which in and of itself, I'm not too hurt, because I was on the fence about it anyways (wasn't quite feeling the color). Though it seems like the solution would be to make it a limited edition for X amount of months, then stop selling/producing them. That way it takes power away from scalpers while giving people a chance to procure one if they want one. But I suppose that would kind of take the "limited" out of "limited edition", eh?
I'm thinking of importing a standard new 3D's from the UK so I can just make my own covers.
@Tsuzura
That is a bit ridiculous.
@Sir_JBizzle yes it would. I like your point of view though!
I thought only GS had this, and it sold out in hours online after Nintendo Direct. When did BB advertise this unit? Not that it really matters anymore I guess.
Mine was cancelled and I never even received an email. So not only am I out the version of the system I wanted the most, I don't even get the $50 discount. Why Best Buy.....why....
@JellySplat I suppose my line if thinking is that there would be tons of red and black 3DSs made... At the very least they'll keep supplying/producing them. Why not just do a short production run of limited ones... They don't even have to do it for more than 3-4 months really. Just long enough to fulfill pre-orders and backorders. You gotta think some will eventually get impatient and just get a regular colored one. Lol
@Miigato They went online at around 5:26 pm CST and sold out at around 6:48 pm CST
I had trouble with my password, so I ordered mine roughly 20-30 minutes after it went live. I'm not really sure why early orders are being cancelled though
@TingLz What day tho, after Nintendo Direct like Game Stop?
Yup, same day.
@Guybrush20X6 except it isn't Nintendo. Its best buy for jumping the gun and accepting preorsees before their preorder stock was confirmed.
@MegaStoneSmash91 If I was you, I would definitely call customer service. Any time I've ever had a problem with receiving a gift card or reward certs they have always given me what was do and sometimes even extra.
@kensredemption Why would eBay do that? It's completely against their interests. They get a cut of all the sales, so it would be silly for them to do it.
I think Best Buy should have maybe done presell like EB Games Canada does. or maybe make it preorder in store only or maybe not put it up until they knew how many they were getting. I feel sorry for all of you who had your order canceled. I didn't think the Majora`s Mask one was limited edition like the MH4U one was. Maybe Nintendo should have limited it to one store, instead of all retailers.
That must suck for some people having their pre-order cancelled considering the point of a pre-order is so you can secure yourself a copy of a product.
Got my $50 credit, guess I'll be getting the red one for $150. Not bad
Got my MH4U bundle, so I'm not even mad. I actually prefer the MH design over the MM design, personally. Silver always looked better to me.
I think the main problem here is that BestBuy pre-sold more systems then they had available, so the issue isn't lack of incoming stock from Nintendo, its the fact that BestBuy was unable to tell how many systems they were getting in, or anticipate the overwhelming amount of fans who would be purchasing the item.
I promise you, not a single person who ordered this system from GameStop will get an email saying their order was canceled, because GameStop knows how to handle preorders properly, and **probably** keeps better contact with Nintendo.
I agree, that while manufacturing more units would fix the lack of stock problem, it would also decrease the value of the item greatly.
And TBH if all you care about is aesthetics, and don't give a patoot about collectors value, then there are some **really** nice looking decals out there that are a lot cooler than this pattern.
But that's just my take on it.
@HappyHappyist
That one really does look nice! I got the demo for MH4U, but I'm not a huge fan of how slowly the characters move ;/ I'm sure I'll get used to it though. Other than that, it is super fun!
I just made a video about this same issue weird haha. But yeah for those who just want a 3DS XL the $50 towards a new 3DS is a great offer....but for those like me who want the Majora's Mask version because I love Majora's Mask it would have left an extremely bitter taste. I just checked mine and I'm still in the clear so I'm happy right now, but I've never been so unsure about something I've preordered in my entire life.
This is something typical of Best buy, we constantly over pre-order high demand items.
I'm not sure how mad I would be by this. If I were tryin to collect all the Zelda special editions then it might irk me some but in the end, those effected by this are getting a pretty hefty discount on the purchase of a New 3DS XL. I would be able to live with not getting the limited edition one at that price. They are now able to pick up a red or black unit PLUS Majora's Mask of $10 less than the special edition unit. That sounds good to me, especially since Best Buy could have easily taken a much harsher stance and just place all the blame on Nintendo without compensating the customers whos preorders the can no longer fulfill.
@Guybrush20X6 Nintendo weren't the ones to take too many pre-orders.
Personally I don't like the look of the Majoras Mask 3DS, I think the Monster Hunter 4 one looks much better, I like the pearlised finish and the logo, it feels like the colours clash in the MM one.
@Hunter_Rose if they don't give a good offer to affected customers they will all get their deposit back and spend it at another shop.
@MadAdam81 and what makes you think they won't still do just that. The level of vitriol being leveled at Best Buy at the moment is astounding. There are many that would rather take their money and go instead of trusting them with another preorder even at a reduced price of for no other reason than to spite the company.
The thing is, we have no idea what happened behind the scenes that caused the issue to begin with. They may very well have sold up to the number allowed to them from Nintendo only to have Nintendo come back and tell them that the number has been reduced. I have worked retail in the past and have witnessed this happen with other preorder products. It is also entirely possible that Best Buy completely dropped the ball. Until it is confirmed what happened it is not entirely fair to place the blame solely on one company.
@Hunter_Rose Probably nobodies fault.
BB suxxxxx...
@JellySplat I feel like you're the only person—besides me—who sees Gamestop for what it truly is: a darn good game store!
The Majora's Mask XL is called a limited edition for a reason, folks: its stock is LIMITED!
I wonder why Nintendo stuff is always so collectible. I mean, most of their old games are sometimes still worth half, or even more than their original retail prices! Is it just because the quality is always there? Well I've played some legendary games on other systems too, but I can buy those now for 10 bucks or less. But then you look at paper mario the thousand year door, and it's 50 bucks used and complete! I just don't understand. Why isn't uncharted 2, halo, the last of us, jak and daxter, and other 1st party games which are excellent, worth as much as Nintendo games?
@Mus1cLov3r I agree! I only buy my games at game stop. I just picked up destiny for 30 bucks because I didn't want to pay 60 for it. I love game stop. But that's just because mine is very friendly.
@Mus1cLov3r The definition of limited should not be "sold out within minutes of announcement and cancelled orders due to not receiving enough stock from the supplier." It should be made illegal for a product to sell out before its even hit the shelves.
@Shane904 Because scalpers are bad. Stop them at all costs!
@TingLz but what I'm saying is eBay would never do that, because that would mean losing out on a lot of money. Scalpers suck, but eBay would be losing a lot of money if they kicked em off.
@NinjaWaddleDee The employees at my Gamestop are really nice.
@LunaticPandora There's no reason that it should be illegal...
@JaxonH - "the common thread is Nintendo items"
The common thread is known scarcity. There are plenty of Mario amiibo sitting on shelves, and Wii U, and Wii Mini. But limited items going back to Cabbage Patch dolls and Tickle Me Elmo, and this stupid Kaos Trap that came out a few months ago and I can't find anywhere for less than 10x mark up ($6 selling for $60).
http://smile.amazon.com/Skylanders-Trap-Team-Not-Machine-Specific/dp/B00NTDL4FU/ref=pd_sim_t_5?ie=UTF8&refRID=0QK77KFNTHKJ5XBKCY49
On the bright side, found these 2 retail at Target Friday morning. I hate paying retail but my kids really wanted these and Target had exactly 1 of each, I took that as a sign.
http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00RC5Q9E2/ref=s9_simh_gw_p63_d1_i3?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=desktop-1&pf_rd_r=11Y8SEM4WTS47MNVAMMF&pf_rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p=1970559082&pf_rd_i=desktop
My kids really wanted them, and with their Target gift cards sitting unused, they weren't lstneing to my eBay talk.
Your $50 at BB will go even further w/ your GCU membership. If you got in on that $30 deal your killing it at BB.
Although legit collectors and people who takes looks real serious would be pissed, but this is a sliver lining for regular gamers. You get $50 off any of your next purchase which includes an alt. New 3ds xl, that's extra money in your pocket bros (wish I preordered).
A bitter sweet victory against scalpers who may have to cancel their eBay listings. Even better if they already got a sale on it.
@TingLz - "At the same time, why would they owe anything to their fans?"
Are you asking that about Nintnedo? If so then -
Gamecube adaptor - advertised but barely able to purchase - was never listed as a "limited time" or "special edition" order.
amiibo - Villager and Wii fit Trainer nearly impossible to find
some "limited edition" items sold only in 1 store in NYC
And with the number of cancellations of different items over the last few months I'd wager at least 1 of them has to do with Nintendo not being able to meet what it told retailers it would send them
When you put it all together, it looks like Nintendo is messing with it's fan base, but not in a good way.
@Mus1cLov3r I love my local GameStop also. Friendly employees, and one is even a die hard Nintendo fan. No one ever ridicules me for liking Nintendo, and I've often heard them speak highly of various Nintendo games to other customers.
@Mus1cLov3r I was gonna say that.
@JellySplat Have fun! the series definitely needs more fans in the West, glad you're having a good time.
Wow! I wish I had preordered through Best buy so I could get $50 off my next purchase! Seriously though, say what you want about gamestop but you don't see them cancelling pre-orders.
@HappyHappyist I have a few friends who are huge Monster Hunter fans here in the states. I have always wanted to get into it but never got around to it. I think I'll make the leap with the new 3ds considering the second analog nub.
@ericwithcheese2 Yeah, you no longer meet many Nintendo fans. :-/
@russellohh Which part?
@Tsuzura seriously?!?!
It's sucks people lost out on their 3DSs, but at least Best Buy is giving some thing back. I remember when I preordered Tommo Neo Geo X and it it was later discovered they were out of stock, they gave me 100 in credit.
@Mus1cLov3r
Yes, GameStop has yet to let me down, much less drop a my preorder!
@FritzFrapp
Now that's what I want!! Customization!
From what I understand from my friends who work at game retailers, Best Buy does this pretty frequently, since these bundles weren't really theirs to pre-order..
I've never pre-ordered anything through BB. After reading this, I probably never will.
Nintendo always posts disappointing fiscal results throughout the year. Suddenly the fish are biting and frothing at the mouth for their product, and they don't make enough to satisfy demand. This would be okay if the product was not then soon discontinued as was the case with some Amiibo, and the fact that they STILL post disappointing sales, despite shipping all of their stock! What the heck is going on at Nintendo!?
ugh Nintendo....WHY.
@Guybrush20X6 "Agreed."
At least BB is giving $50 to use to get something else.
Reseller market is inevitable, it's just skewed early in the product life cycle because demand is highest and supply is lowest. The truly rational thing to do is just wait until more stock is available or they release the Zelda New 3DS Standard size or whatever the next exclusive nonsense is. There will always be something else in the future to spend your money on. Nintendo does not disappoint in that aspect.
Genuin Question - See because this suppors the additional buttons on the New 3DS, will it be improved with my original 3DS and circle pad pro?
My Best Buy order is still active and my fingers are still desperately crossed!
