Less than six months after the release of version 3.0, Nintendo has updated its unconventional but addictive first-person shooter, Steel Diver: Sub Wars, to version 4.0.
The full details about version 4.0 have been revealed on Miiverse by the 3DS eShop title's director, Takaya Imamura:
In Version 4.0, we've added the option to remodel any given sub on the Submarine Selection screen. For £0.89 you can remodel a sub to expand its crew-carrying capacity. Before this update, the number of crew each sub could carry varied, but now you can remodel any sub to carry up to six crew members.
Here are some other things we've tweaked for Version 4.0:
- Submarine diving and surfacing angles:
The angle of a sub when it dives or surfaces will not be as steep, which makes it easier to evade frontal attacks.- Durability balance:
In order to improve game balance, we've adjusted the defensive strength of submarines with a durability stat of six or more.- Crew appearance in single-player missions:
In single-player missions, crew that you've already rescued will not appear, making it easier for you to recruit new crew members.- Matched Skills Battles:
Players between level 30 and level 49 can now match up in Matched Skills Battles.- Starting positions in Internet Battle:
The starting positions in Hot Springs were returned to the Version 1.0 settings.- Play Coin requirement:
We have removed the Play Coin requirement for Internet Battle in the Free Version.- Bug fixes:
We fixed a bug that inflicts damage on you when you sink an enemy.
Let us know in the comments what you think of version 4.0 of Steel Diver: Sub Wars if you have had the chance to test it out.
Thanks to Ryan Millar for the tip!

Cool
Gonna download the update as soon as I get home. I really really like Sub Wars. Wonderful game.
Haven't played it (free) in ages... it was fun, but not the ftpFPS I was looking for xD
wow they are still working on the game! that's so cool!
"In single-player missions, crew that you've already rescued will not appear, making it easier for you to recruit new crew members."
finally !!!
I'd love Nintendo to reveal how much money they've made off of this game. It must do ok for them to keep updating it 10 months after release. One of my favorites and well worth the price.
Not played for a while, got so many downloads on my 3ds that I forgot about this great little game
Really need to get on this game and play it. I bought it when it came out and haven't really had the time to play it at all yet.
I got the Premium version while it was on sale and honestly didn't play it much. Maybe 4.0 will be a good time to, ahem, sink a few more hours in it...
This is one of the best games that i rarely play. I have about 6-7 hours on it and have a great time every time i play it. This is a good reminder.
Play Coin requirement: We have removed the Play Coin requirement for Internet Battle in the Free Version.
And now I shall play again.

That sounds like some pay to win creeping in there. Aside from that every on of the tweaks sound great and maybe I'll get back to playing it.
I just love it that even such an "under the radar" (no pun intended) title gets so much support.
Cool update for sure.
@Jazzer94
Same here!
@Einherjar
Submarines use sonar, not radar.
@Kiz3000 Yeah, does that mean you still have to pay for some content even after buying the premium version?
Got the update but not gonna pay for 99 cents for one sub only to get a 6 man crew...
So I can finally use the Great Seal again? YESSSSSSSSSSS!
I don't like the idea entirely but I always enjoyed using the Great Seal and wished it had more crew members. (It only has a LAME two)
And also 30-49 level matched rooms means I can play this game again! YAY!
I went Premium during the period the Star Fox sub, the Blue Marine was free, but glad to hear the premium features are slowly going to. be free.

Those two are my favs. Now I can level up back into the game again and complete my crew collection.

Ugh, now the risk is gone. I personally liked that thing.
Always glad to see an update, though I was hoping for some sort of content boost, even if it was DLC. New missions, maps, subs, etc. But at least some things have been improved. They got rid of the glitch where you took damage after collecting a dropbox from a defeated opponent. I liked the play coin requirement originally because it virtually eradicated teamkilling, but now that they've removed friendly fire anyway I don't mind them dropping the play coin requirement to get more players in the water.
They need to advertise this better to current owners who were turned off about the play coin rule. That should bring some back. It was nice to see a lot of new players last night. Got a 24 streak! Haven't had one of those since September. Granted, I haven't been playing as much.
I shall download it!
Still one of my favourite download, definitely worth the price.
I haven't played for a while, but I still know this game is pretty sick. I would love to see an HD version on WiiU, possibly with cross-platform multiplayer.
With the remodelling feature, the number of available sub types effectively doubles. In some cases, the results can be spectacular. Especially in the case of "early"/weaker subs.
