When Ubisoft said that the Wii U version of open-world action title Watch Dogs was being delayed, it insisted that the additional time would be used to make sure the potential of the Wii U GamePad was fully realised.
Fast forward a few months and the game is finally here — but has Ubisoft kept its promise?
Watch the video below to find out exactly how Watch Dogs harnesses the power of the second screen.

how did nintendo everything have this video out before you guys!? this game looks legit!
May not be much, but it's more than some Nitnedo games. And I like the map. When playing games like inFamous on PS3 I'm going into and out of the map constantly. I don't know how important a map is in WD but its there at least.
I like the map plus the game looks great and seems to run smoothly but with a delay that long I was hoping to use the gamepad for hacking.
Wow, Lego City Undercover released like a year and a half before this and makes a much better use of the Gamepad, at least judging from this video.
@NbaJunkie Probably because we stuck it live on YouTube while it was scheduled on the site
If nintendo made this game they wouldnt be doing anything revolutionary with the pad. They haven't figured out how to implement it best on their own flagship franchises..I think ubi did right on this port..i really hope this quiets the haters...
@Kodeen We have no control over the length, for a video of that size (in the UK at least) the ads are usually skippable after 5 seconds. Perhaps it's different depending on what country you're in?
Still don't care. This is bargain bin fodder.
@Kodeen It won't be the same for everyone as the ads we see in the UK will be totally different from the ones seen in North America, or anywhere else for that matter.
wow, this aint half bad. but i still hate ubisoft.
Can't wait to find this game used for 15$!
Well I need to get this. Ubisoft almost burned me completely with the Rayman Legends debacle. The only money they have gotten from me since launch (when I bought Zombi U) was recently when I got Child of Light. But I skipped this game on PS3 because they were promising this as the definitive version with awesome use of the gamepad, etc. I'll give them one more shot with this. Hopefully they'll start releasing more of their games that are appearing on PS3/360 on the Wii-U.
Looks legitimately useful and the port doesn't look junk. It's really too bad it couldn't have a simultaneous release for the sake of the Wii U platform and third party support because there's no way it will make as many sales now: advertising died down, people are more aware of the game's shortcomings, and anybody who had another console besides a Nintendo one had too many options for playing it.
Still, good on them for keeping their promise of releasing what looks like a decent port.
For games like this, I think Wind Waker HD is a good standard to look at. What I like about it is that it works great for one-player and it works just as well or better when playing with a partner. The main player uses a Pro Controller and the "navigator" uses the GamePad. Interacting with the GamPad doesn't interrupt the flow of the main game like it does in Pikmin 3 for instance. Really great experience that way.
Oh and on the personal offense some take from business decisions Ubisoft made, I don't know if it's justified. Ubisoft was the only third party that made a serious effort to support the Wii U at launch and the failure of that launch likely caused a huge loss for Ubisoft. The Rayman thing did hurt, but I see why they felt they needed to recover some of that loss.
Looks great! The gamepad is best used like this
This is very disappointing. If anyone would like to see a stealth action game with hacking elements done properly on the gamepad, check out Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Unlike Ubisoft, they really went the extra mile.
@NbaJunkie You're right. I'm completely disappointed with the GamePad implementation in Wind Waker HD... And Super Mario 3D World... And Lego City... And...
Wait a second... Nintendo didn't delay the game for six months for these games' GamePad features.
Still a game I'll get used if I'm still interested in the future.
@NbaJunkie Consider how many of Nintendos flagship franchises are on the Wii U. Apart from a couple of Mario games not much. Wind Waker made good use of it, but since it was a remaster they couldn't use it too much. Pikmin 3 used it well, though I wouldn't call it a flagship franchise. Xenoblade X seems to use it quite extensively and Zelda U will as well.
I decided a long time ago I would get watch_dogs and I haven't changed my mind. I love games that use the GamePad, even if it's just small festures. At the same time I hate games that don't use it at all. Like if the game has a map and you can't view it on the GamePad.
@NbaJunkie I think so too, I can't wait for tomorrow!!!
Looks like all the nay-saying sods have left this article alone, I can finally share the hype
@justastone who are you defending. Dktf disregarded the game pad completely. Mk8 has a big dumb horn.. on the game pad as space filer. 3d world has touch portions in a couple levels gimmick...pikmin has a map it's handy but just a map. Wwhd has inventory which isn't used enoughby playersto be considered essential. I have all these games enjoyed the neck out of them But those are the facts.
@PvtOttobot They just don't care anymore. 6 month delay and this is it? They said they would take full advantage of the gamepad. That was clearly a lie.
@kyuubikid213 thereason Nintendo isn't delaying titles is becausethe wiiu is suffering they can't afford to delay titles. There have been enough droughts already. And still there havebeen delays. Dktf2 months for what? Pikmin too andothers im sure
Nice video, guys. Off tv alone is worth it, imo.
@NbaJunkie I have Wind Waker HD, never played it on GameCube, but there is no way I would play it without my GamePad now. Inventory, Navigation (I would seriously get lost at sea, it not for it), the wind waker songs memo, aiming with the gyro, tingle bottles and the PictoBox camera... everything is made so much better with the second screen. I don't end up using off-TV because of this. No Pro Controller for this one, thanks. For a remade game, not built from the start with the GamePad, I'd say they did a terrific job.
@DiscoGentleman
Yeah I now. Wishful thinking!
@NbaJunkie Pikmin 3 uses it for much more than a map. It's a true asynchronous device in Pikmin 3. MK8 uses it as a steering wheel, has the racing standings on it, displays the racing map there, and has it as a horn. What things do you think Tropical Freeze would benefit from by using Gamepad-specific features? After all, it's a traditional platformer. Some titles (like Nintendo Land) relies much on the Gamepad, others don't.
@jariw I don't know,that's kind of the point. Nintendo doesn't know either. Nintendo and everyone else is relying on Ubisoft to come up with themagic way for the gamepad to be used. Get over yourselfs and Nintendo and enjoy thisgame for what it is
I just fail to see the point of the GamePad. ZombiU nailed it, but that was a very specific game and genre. Dual screen gaming doesn't apply well to anything that is more than a snails pace.
The only useful applications of the GamePad for me have been Off TV play and browsing the web. And for browsing the web, I always wish the Pad had a high res screen behind glass. So I instead reach for my zippy Android device instead.
It still pisses me off that Ubisoft goes and says they wont release 'M" rated games because we wont buy it when it's obvious the hardware wont handle what they want to put in the games because apparently neither can the PS4 or X1.
I would have paid 60€ for gyro controls alone. I cannot even stand how cluncy the shooting with last gen controllers look, let alone how they feel.
Gyro controls together with this interactive map would have been easy to implement, and would have made meaningful additions compared to version not having them.
Looks like solid use. The best uses that were absolutely magnificent were Zombi U, Arkham City and Mass Effect 3. Deux Ex too but I still need to play this game through. It's true Nintendo didn't nail the game pad as well as some of the third parties, but I guess they did it for Zelda and Pikmin, and in the end, they didn't really use the wii remote that much for Mario Kart or NSMB or Galaxy either... these are experiences which the game pad is not best suited for. It's best suited for action open world games or third person stuff with maps.
@gatorboi352 agreed, on both points.
I'm totally getting WD, don't care about the gamepad, just want a damn mature title to play on my 2 year old Nintendo system.
Having the map on the gamepad is fine by me, but it looks like you are also stuck with an onscreen map as well, which seem kind of pointless. I like that the gamepad can leave the main screen relatively free of clutter, which at least the Assassins Creed games allowed on Wii U.
@sinalefa To be fair, Lego City Undercover has my favorite gamepad usage yet, out of any game. It would be cool if future open world titles took a clue (and well, it would be even cooler if we started getting more open world titles in the first place).
looks great
@Samurai_Goroh the problem is the game is a multiplat, and was designed with a simple "hold Y to hack" mechanic. As such, there's nothing that could be done to expound upon that, short of having a bright red button on the game pad that you touch.
Had the game actually had real hacking, then they could have transitioned it to the pad. But this game doesn't have hacking. It just has "hold Y".
@NbaJunkie Defending? No I'm simply stating an opinion. There's no need to shove gamepad controls into a game that doesn't need them like TF. Pikmin 3 used it more than just a map. It would have been much more difficult to complete challenge mode without the multitasking opportunities it provides. Frankly while Watch Dogs may be using it more than some of Nintendos titles I don't believe it should have taken them all of that time it was delayed for to implement them.
Hey I fall asleep while you were talking about Watch Dogs AND gamepad use...
Muahahaha! You really call this gamepad use?!? Muahahaha!
You guys forget that Ubisoft were working on the U version BEFORE the other versions and released it 6 months LATER with a map on the gamepad?!? And you call it great use...?!? Muahahaha!!
Btw: I miss the screenshots of the game of the year... ;-P
Still not buying it until it's $20, it doesn't look bad but it also doesn't look very fun to me. I should get ZombiU instead...
Those Frenchadians may have ruined their image to me, but since this IS a DECENT at best game I will just say that if you have at least a SLIGHT interest in this it's worth a go.. I played it on PC when it was new and found a few hours of entertainment out of it, but ultimately got bored.
Bought it last night and played for a few hours. Enjoying it so far.
Glad to see some people point out the hypocrisy of those panning Ubi for not using the Gamepad better when Nintendo and their closest devs themselves don't use it predominantly (SM3DW, DKTF, MK8, ZWW HD...). Also getting sick and tired of the complaints about hacking being so simple. For one, this is an open world game with hacking elements. There is so much to hack in the world that having a complex Gamepad style mini game around every corner would destroy the flow of the world. And for the record, there are puzzles attached to the more important hackable things. One security system I hacked had a Deus Ex styled puzzle attached to it, and every ctOS tower (equivalent to Assassin's Creed's viewpoints) has some sort of real life puzzle that deals with manipulating obstacles to make it to the hackable tower itself.
It's a good balance. The last thing that needs to be said is that any flaws with this game are directly tied to the nature of the game itself. It's not a bad port, like many would have you believe (same way AC4 wasn't). Anything wrong with this game is also wrong on PS4, XB1, etc.
TOMORROW ¡!!!!!!¡!¡¡!!!!!
Good to see some posters have noticed that it's harsh to criticise third-parties for not using the Gamepad when Nintendo have struggled to use it. Looks a solid port actually, better than I expected. There have been several on Wii U (NFS:MW, Sonic Racing, Deus Ex HR, Ass Creed IV, Batman Origins, COD Blops 2, Splinter Cell etc)
I have to say Ubisoft are one of the companies who make an effort with the gamepad, maybe even more than Nintendo. Look at splinter cell, zombieu and even assassins creed game. Must admit I'm really looking forward to playing this
It's just a port but a great one. Everyone assumed it was going to look like crap when it really looks on par with the PS4 version like AC4. Glad Ubisoft puts effort into their ports. Maybe if this version is successful enough they would give us Bad Blood
The only thing news worthy here is how your game room looks it's awesome!The rest is just a map on the gamepad, like that hasn't happened before and No @Mega719 No Bad Blood DLC for you!
@midnafanboy if you hate this game then don't comment
Some of you are sad, you just want a mature title? Ok what was bayonetta 2 which also let you use the gamepad to attack! Smh watch dogs comes out, some of you roll over and complain about how nintendo hasn't made good use of the gamepad! Everything done in the video has been done by nintendo. Ubisoft didn't deliver and delayed the game 6 months and expect full retail price for a game you can get half price on the market! I believe some of you are just sheep and just look at what ever is shiny and get fixated on it like a deer caught in the head lights! Quit complaining about what nintendo isn't doing and be happy they are developing games that don't need patch work or gauze, bandages & cpr to get them working like AC unity, far cry4, WD! So far i see sheep who want to pay 60$ for broken games or don't mind voting with their wallets saying "here Ubi delay my game i don't care I'll still buy it even if you did nothing special to make it stand out "!
@BoltedArc your reading comprehension is deplorable. No one who criticized Nintendo use of the Gamepad (or lack thereof) praised Ubisoft's use of it. It just doesn't make any sense to pan Ubi for not going crazy with it when the first party developer is just as guilty of neglecting it on their own platform.
And where do you get off telling people how to spend their own money? A game is a game is a game. If I want to vote with my wallet and buy a full price game to support third party titles on the Wii U, that's my prerogative. If more people were willing to do that in the first year of the Wii U's life, we wouldn't even be talking about a Watch Dogs that was delayed. And calling it broken is so beyond ignorant. You clearly haven't played it given your stance, so how could you possibly know if it's broken? Everyone who HAS played it has done nothing but praise it for holding up far better than the skeptics anticipated.
For the record, it has nothing to do with clamoring for M rated games. I OWN Bayonetta 2, thank you very much. I just want the best Wii U library with a diversity of games, like any sensible owner would.
Really you've done nothing but make yourself out to be a petulant child. Leave the complex issues regarding the Wii U's library to us adults.
@BoltedArc This "here Ubi delay my game i don't care I'll still buy it even if you did nothing special to make it stand out "! And the rest of your comment is amazing i applaud you good sir.
@BoltedArc
The good news is, no matter how many petulant insults you throw around, anyone who wants to buy this game doesn't care what you think.
Ok I don't have many games for my wii u but the ones I have are using the gamepad excellently... Spinner eliteV2, monster hunter 3u, resident evil, zombi U. If the use of the game pad is weapon selection and maps this suits me as I don't have to pause to select/check stuff in sub menus.
As for Nintendo well I can see why it's a struggle, because they build games not to need the use of sub menus which leaves them nothing to put on the gamepad screen. I'm sure zelda and metroid will use it well.
@KillScottKill you sir haven't read the complaints going on in the section obviously, second when watchdogs first came out it had alot of issues on top of the scale back in resolution and fps even so i never said it was broken but the third party that has been coming out has been examples CoD-AW, AC-unity, far cry 4 and so on. WD may play okay now after 6 months of delay after loads of patches and i have a Ps4 as well as WiiU sir. I don't know what you own nor do i care but so far the fact you read what i wrote as me telling people what to do! You are that sheep sir/madam go sit in the corner. What i wrote was the reaction to action that people who buy WD may cause while also trying to figure out why people want these unfinished games on their console. You would rather recieve ports from xbox then a game solely developed for the system. Enjoy WD indeed but when 3rd parties come to us with 6 month delay releases its cause people like you who think we need 3rd parties so bad that we should compromise on equality & quality across consoles! Step back and see the bigger picture!
Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 8, Bayonetta 2, and Smash Bros.
The four biggest Wii U titles of the year, and yet NONE of them use the GamePad in a meaningful way, if at all.
I love the Wii U, but the GamePad is a joke. Accept it, people.
@Samurai_Goroh Exactly what I said a while ago. An extra 6 months to come up with amazing new ways to use the Gamepad, and we get..........OFF TV play and an interactive map, please, be serious.
I would respect Ubishafted more if they were honest. Real reason for the delay, it would have been going up against MK8. Also, they claim
they had a finished game, waiting to ship, around 5 months ago. They were waiting for the install base to rise a bit. Well, it has gone up by around 1.4 million since then, and still no release. If they had a finished game, they would have put it out to recover a large part of their investment.
They are looking to become EA v2.0. Just remember Ubishafted, EA were voted worst company in America 3 years running, you are facing the same if you don`t go back to being the great company that actually cared about its customers.
@electrolite77 i don't really care who buys it but when this happens again we will only have ourselves to blame! (Mainly the sheep that can't see the wolf for what it is)
@BoltedArc
Whereas you think the alternative-i.e. boycotting it-will persuade publishers to bring more games to the Wii U and quicker? Not likely. Nintendo owners have been 'boycotting' third-party games for years, that's why the third-party support is below par.
@electrolite77 lets be honest here nintendo gamers only boycott 3rd parties because they develop sub par ports, missing online and extra modes that are available on other consoles which is still the case on WiiU. Either give us full development or don't bring it at all, why would you pay full price for half the game? That tells them that you don't care what or when you recieve it as long as you get to play it!
Basically UBI lied all the time.
They said it would also work as a hacking gadget.,
@BoltedArc
Its nothing to do with that. Loads of worthwhile third-party games have flopped on Nintendo machines over the years because they didn't have Nintendo characters in. Things like Zack and Wiki, Rocket, Billy Hatcher that were exclusive and perfectly suited to Nintendo platforms flopped, adult exclusives like Madworld, Red Steel 2, Killer 7 all struggled. Good ports like Need for Speed Most Wanted and Assassins Creed IV failed.
I had a PS3 in the last gen and did I cry about the 360 getting better versions of most mukti-plats? No, I supported the developers and the machine. I'm bored of the excuses.
Waiting for the reviews - if this doesn't manage 80%+ on the likes of here, Metacritic and Gamerankings then i'm keeping my money firmly trousered.
Kinda hoped the Hacking tools would be used for some touch screen gimmicks. I mean, I'm not big on touch screen gimmicks, but it just sounds too natural for this game...oh well. I'll probably pick this up some time next year, since the more I watch, the more I get into what it really is and not simply what I expected or (quite frankly) was promised it would be.
@electrolite77 those games for the wii didn't do well because the wii remote that came out for the wii was disliked and after everyone started feeling like nintendo's wii console was all gimmick and no substance they left it to collect dust, the newer games that came out need for speed and AC didn't do well because of the whole hardware debacle after microsoft & sony announced their consoles everyone jumped ship based off the hardware specs and the wiiu started losing its userbase, look at ghost recon which was supposed to come out for it but was pulled out after the massive surge of hate for nintendo's system. Those that kept the system are the loyalists that love the franchises like mario and zelda and don't care for other games or ppl like me that take their investment seriously! The wii will always be looked at as a winning failure cause everyone bought one but stopped using it after they got tired of the motion controls.
@electrolite77 if you bought a ps3 and continued to support 3rd party after getting shafted over and over, didn't think to maybe petition these unoptimized games for your system guess who's fault it is! The guy who automatically decided that he is absolutely powerless to stop the lazy ports! Unlike you i would rather do something like stop supporting businesses that think its okay to sell me a game with bugs & glitches.
@BoltedArc
An exciting new list of nonsense excuses to be bored of....
I want this game for the Wii u and its Really cool but i got a Problem my Touchscreen on my gamepad is broken and i cant See anything on it and i dont Know if i Really need the Touchscreen or is it only the map or do i need it for Eine Mission or quicktime events i hobe someone Can help me pls
