During today's Nintendo Direct broadcast more details were given about Nintendo's upcoming squid shooter Splatoon. While the core of the game is the 4x4 online multiplayer shooter — revealed at E3 — in which two teams compete to cover the most ground with ink, it has been confirmed that the game also features an offline single player campaign mode.
In the single player campaign your squid-like character will have to face an octopus army who also have an arsenal of ink weaponry. Many different forms of octopus were shown and there appears to be lots of variety in the levels on offer; though previously confirmed, it's pleasing that this offline component is shaping up enough to be shown.
Splatoon is scheduled for a Q2 2015 release. Are you pleased to hear about this single player campaign mode? As always let us know with a comment below.

Singleplayer looked ok I guess, definitely more interested in the multiplayer.
Sidenote: Iwata looked like he lost a lot of weight, his period of sickness has taken a toll on him.
I would not buy this if it was online multiplayer only......at some point servers disappear and then you have a game that becomes a coaster? I'm also hoping for local multiplayer on some level
Super stoked to play this game! I'll probably skip out on the single player. It looks kind of boring to me.
@Gerbwmu Yes, offline multiplayer would be great, and some more (strategic) maps
Pretty curious what day will Splatoon release since it'll be releasing at the second quarter of 2015. Also it's nice hearing and seeing Iwata again after many months.
I still think there is a lot Nintendo has yet to tell us about this game. They will do something like with Super Smash Bros I think and release a crap load of new details right before it releases in a direct.
Now we're talking, I'm all for online multiplayer but my internet is rubbish. I love the concept of this game so I'll be more pleased than most if the single player shapes up well!
Very excited about this. While most people play shooters for multiplayer I'm still very much a solo gamer. So a single player campaign may lift this from party game status for me.
Those octopus robot things freak me the hell out. But yeah, looks good. I like how they're using the gameplay elements in single player mode, like that one clip where you swim across a wire.
SPLATOOOOOOOOOOOON!!!
The single player campaign looks good so far, and it seems to hint at some possible octupus characters for multiplayer. Get this game out already!
@Gerbwmu Would be nice, but I wonder if that's even possible. The map and quick-jump features are essential for multiplayer, so unless SPLATOOOOOOOOOOOON supports multiple GamePad's, I'll doubt that's gonna happen.
Uh yeah, this is the best thing ever. Looked like some creative level design there!
Those squid thing's look creepy, but the single player mode looks like it's going to be worth playing it.
Annnnnnnd it's now a automatic purchase. Especially with local multiplayer.
The offline modes will determine if I buy this game. I'm with @Gerbwmu and don't want a Splatoon "coaster" in a couple of years.
YES! I really wanted to see more about Splatoon's single player campaign since it was announced. I really wanted a full single player mode for this, I hate shoot's without solo modes.
It looks even better than at E3 and I can't wait to see more of the customization options for characters. Splatoon is my top WiiU game for next year now (at least until SMT X Fire Emblem gets a release date).
I'm not big on online multiplayer, so I prefer to have an offline mode in every game I buy. This just made Splatoon a 100% certainty on my library.
When I played this game at EGX London 2014 I was amazed! This game looks so awesome!
Looks really cool. I can't wait for this one!
I will become the first to coin the term uni-pus. Dat ain't no octopus.
Now that their is a single player campaign this became a day one purchase. Also those octopus things are kind of creepy.
Single player campaign is great, and Nitneod really does need more online multiplayer games, but if this doens't have offline multiplayer we probably wouldn't pick it up for awhile. which would be a travesty b/c we really want it for offline multiplayer, the single player is a bonus though.
So can somebody tell me why the first games announced in the ND were "spring 2015" but this 1 was "Q2"? Isn't 2nd quarter spring? At least Kirby was Feb. And Capt Toad Dec and SSBU Nov. That just leaves Jan but after all the late Dec Christmas games I can live w/ nothing in Jan. Maybe I'll get Sword & Soldiers 2 in Jan, that would be perfect.
Can't wait! Tempted to make a pre-order now.
This is the bizzarest trailer I've seen.
This looks amazing! I can't believe some people actually said the single player looks boring! The best game of 2015 has already been confirmed today, guys! I thought I couldn't possibly love this game more. This is gonna become one of my favorites.
Game is still far off but I'm liking the shape it is taking. The video shows so many hints of clever additional play with the basic mechanics. Seems like the single player will have a bit of a puzzle element to practice your skills and do some complicated stuff.
Nice job making the Octopus enemies freaky!
Okay, now the game has caught my interest. That campaign mode looks dope, but it'd be much better if you could do 2 player co-op through it.
The octopus is my favorite animal, so I'm kind of conflicted on the enemies. On the one hand, this is a disgrace to how awesome the animal can be. On the other, the designs are really good/creepy/unsettling, so I have to admit they made a nice aesthetic choice.
I hope there's a CPU battle mode as well. But AWESOME TRAILER!
After this news the game jumped into a must buy for me
Tried the multiplayer at an event and it was very fun, but I'm more a single-mode player then a multiplayer one, I can't buy a game with only multiplayers options!!!
With the solo mode confirmed you convinced me Nintendo, just complete the game and deliver it to my house ^o^
@rjejr Q2 is not spring in all territories, it may be that Splatoon's getting a worldwide simultaneous release.
I wasn't really sure about Splatoon when it was first revealed at E3. The single player campaign has me considering it now, as I wasn't really sure if I would want to pay for a multi-player only game.
I was excited to see any news about this game and I wasn't surprised by the release window of 2nd quarter.
I was ready to purchase a family friendly shooter that my kids and I could enjoy together when it was just the multiplayer. Having a single player experience can only be a bonus at this point.
It looks like people under those tentacles..... plot development??? I hope!
@AlexOlney - I know, the land down under has it all backwards But they just go back and forth between quarters and seasons, just pick one. Have you seen the long Nindie list - you probably did, I think you posted it - some have quarters, most have seasons. Just be consistent is all I ask.
No, that 1 was TW - here ya go:

Still not sold on this game, why did they not put the development team to work on a new Metroid title. Surely that would sell more copies than this!
The single player actually looks terrific, and a lot more fleshed out than I expected it to be. From what was shown in the trailer, the single player incorporates a lot of puzzle/platforming features, which is great, because that means Splatoon will include two styles of gameplay and Nintendo has some major pedigree when it comes to designing puzzle/platformer games. I just hope the single player isn't too short.
Looks like it was just thrown together... This should of just been a multiplayer game is how i see it right now. Could be wrong could be wow'd later on but right now naw. I'll stick to inking you kids up online
Seriously, am I the only one that thinks they look like Daleks?
I really wish they would axe the singleplayer aspect and use the resources to work on local multiplayer instead.
I was interested in this game when it shown at E3, probably my 2nd favourite thing shown off at E3 2014 overall, but given I rarely play games online, it made me hesitant on the title until I got to see some of the single player footage.
With this recent single player campaign trailer though, it's now my most wanted game for the Wii U. I'm really looking forward to Splatoon, and I'm pleased to see so many positive responses to this game overall.
