We're in the middle, it seems, of a Minecraft clone — or 'inspired by' Minecraft — phase on Nintendo systems, with UCraft from Nexis Games being an example on the way to the Wii U eShop. With Mojang staying away from Nintendo systems and now under Microsoft ownership, it's possible these small studio downloads will be the closest thing for gamers on big N systems.
UCraft's developer has now, in an effort to perhaps build confidence in the project, released its first snippet of footage. It's targeting — as the developer informed us — a Holiday release on the eShop, so it's not that far away.
The video is less than a minute long and below; what do you think?

The difference between boxy landscape demo and minecraft is many years of hard work. I wish them the best of luck but they've got a long way to go.
also; ouch, that fov
90s, is that you?
Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think the people asking for Minecraft on Wii U are going to be swayed by that music.
I really hope Nitneod comes up w/ it's own bulding type sim on Wii U - lord knows there are enough time wasting sims on the 3DS w/ Animal Crossing, Tomodachi Life, Disney Magic Kingdom and Fatansy Life, and probably half a dozen others I've forgotten - can't the Wii U get 1 game that makes people say - we don't need Minecraft, I'm too busy building places for my amiibo to live in "Mushroom Kingdom"? Maybe "amiibo Universe" or "Nintendo Land 2" or something else, but "Mushroom Kingdom" always sounds like the best name to me for a time wasting sim.
I don't really want a Minecraft clone. We ought to have an official release, not an un-original cop-out. I think these developers should build an original title, it doesn't really show much creativity just to build a clone. Seems more like a money-making scheme than an effort to build a good game. Still, if people buy it, who am I to fault them?
I think we need to stop paying attention to these cheap rip-off titles.
@rjejr
One without blocks, 3D objects and textures could be drawn out on the touchscreen, then placed in the world. Then it would feel original, unlike this.
Yeah no.
I, for one, would like a Minecraft clone on Wii U. It a game I want to try and that I never had the opportunity to. Those clones can be interesting, if the quality is there of course.
looks nice
not as bad as i thought
maybe this will be a real good version of minecraft where the devs know how to program a game xD
i really really like minecraft and played it long but let us be honest... its awfule from a programming aspect and doesnt work like it should and mojang never changed it xD So i really have hope that one of the clones will change this and when they will use the gamepad features... then i will buy it!
Nintendo is officially the red-headed stepchild of gaming. Almost every popular device currently in existence has a Minecraft port except Ninty's systems. Iwata and Co. should have been paying Mojang to bring Minecraft to the U, prior to the Microsoft buyout, instead of funding the cult-dud Bayonetta 2.
@gage_wolf it makes sense that Nintendo didn't ask for Minecraft cause anyone could just play it on any other system. But since Nintendo funded Bayonetta 2, nobody else will be able to play Bayonetta 2 unless they buy a Wii U.
I think the point of all these clones is to make Mojang wake themselves up and realize how much of a mistake it was to leave out Wii U when it came to Minecraft
Minecraft episode U: The Clone Wars!
this looks bad LOL
@gage_wolf The difference here is, that Minecraft was already a thing. Bayonetta 2 on the other hand, would have never seen the light of day if it wasnt for Nintendo.
And with Bayonetta 2 and Wonderful 101, Nintendo is actually keeping another genre alive that the mainstream has forgotten: Japanese hack n slay action games.
Nintendo is the refuge for genres of old. Platformers, collect a thons, local multiplayer / party games etc. Genres, that were almost banished on other platforms or severely westernized to cater towards the focus group tests.
And im very gratefull for that.
Everyone has played their fair share of minecraft already. Its a loss, dont get me wrong, but not a huge one.
If anything, Minecraft should be focusing on its next gen iterations, as these consoles offer the right hardware for the game to reach its full potential.
Because lets face it, the last gen Minecraft console versions were good, but they quickly met their hard limits when it comes to hardware.
You can only do so much.
@ZenTurtle then talk to Microsoft as they own Minecraft now and the only reason they are still on PlayStation is because they were already done and submitted when MS brought Mojong
MS ain't going to release it on another system now and I wouldn't be supprised if they stopped supporting the PlayStation versions too
I'm sorry but clones like this are only way your going to get anything like Minecraft on Nintendo now
@gage_wolf And, like that, I'd be done with Nintendo.
With Minecraft now under Microsoft wouldn't they soon be expecting a huge "Cease & Desist" from their army of lawyers? I mean after all isn't that one of top five things Microsoft excels at?
@FullbringIchigo
Or, I don't know, play it on a PC, on a version which happens to be superior to all of the console versions? I also don't see how Microsoft is any less likely to release it than Mojang were. They wouldn't stop supporting the other versions, since it would be disastrous for PR. Anyway, do what you will, buy this uninspired clone.
I really hope this sells an absolute ton, just to give a big fat f**k you to mojang.
If it's good I'll definetly buy it
@Imagamerboi
@Einherjar
Both of you are making the point that Bayo 2 is a niche title. Bayo 2 is fan service for a very core sect of gamers. It will not move systems, it will not bring attention to the U. The Wii U does not need niche titles at this point. It needs popular titles that have mass appeal.
I was just at Target the other day and half the action figure aisle was Minecraft toys. There was one small row of Nintendo figures. At this point, Minecraft's pixely box art is probably more recognizable to younger players than Mario and Co. Nintendo needs the attention. An over-sexualized gun-toting witch isn't gonna bring it.
No. Just no.
@gage_wolf Well even if Minecraft was on Wii u, nobody would buy it, and besides Microsoft bought Mojang so the chances of a Wii u version is low. But sadly, if there was COD exclusive for Wii u, people would buy it in a heartbeat...gaming these days.
@ZenTurtle well I never said I was going to buy it did I just said if you want it on Wii U this will be as close as your going to get
and I know the PC version is the best but if you were Microsoft would you release the game on a platform that's in competition with yours or support a version on a different platform, wouldn't you want the version on your system to be the best one
yeah they may give them updates but I can see them being released a lot later than the PC and xbox versions and I reckon the DLC will probably stop coming to PlayStation
Well that was one awful trailer.
Just a word of advice to the developer if they happen to read this. Online co-op will be huge if you can pull it off.
A little rough around the edges at the moment, but the Paint integration was REALLY nice surprise! You can make it as nice looking as you want, and this highlights the joys of the GamePad even further. The Minecraft would have been perfect fit for Wii U because of the combination of the touchscreen and game controls, but being able to paint with the stylus is awesome and I hope more games used this feature!
The GamePad just makes all kinds of creative games at home in the Wii U. I hope the developers are not taking this opportunity lightly, and I wish that they would continue to develop this after the launch. Online co op would be great, but if there was shared user created content like textures, this could really evolve into a massive, long going hit.
Just hoping they don't forget the "craft" part, since creative mode gets dull quickly. I'm having that issue in disney infinity. I like having to earn my materials.
boo
@gage_wolf You argument is, sadly, BS.
If Bayonetta is so niche, why does Kamiya, the lead producer still get so much flak for its WiiU exclusivity ?
Why do so many people want this game so badly, if its only known by a hand full out there ? Why was the outcry for the complete experience on the WiiU so big, that they revoked their statement that it would be unlikely for Bayonetta 1 to still arrive on the WiiU if no one cared ?
The game and genre as a whole has become a niche because, like i said, the mainstream tried to kill it of like it did with many other "old school" genres.
Games like this are more needed than ever. What good is the WiiU if it only offers the brown grey sludge found on any other system there is ?
Why would we need 3 consoles that offer the same unoriginal content ? Whats the point, if there is nothing that stands out anymore ?
What the WiiU really needs in an audience, that isnt blinded by the mainstream media, by "doodbro" attitudes that claim "cartoony games are for kids and should die out", by critics who praise graphics over gameplay.
Not a landslide of games found everywhere else. It already has everything it needs: originality, diverse games, fun games, creative games.
The WiiU isnt "saved" by yet another Minecraft release. Everyone who wants to play it already got a system to do it on. The enthusiasts play it on the PC, the casuals on their phones and tablets and the middle of the road console gamers probably all have access to a PS3 or a 360.
This is by no means the thing that the WiiU so desperatly needs.
If the system needs to be saved from anything, than the people who rather want to see a slew of mainstream titles that appear on any device possible instead of more bold, "out of the comfort zone" and unique titles.
@rjejr Awesome idea. Nintendo Kingdom sounds good.
Eh, maybe, I will say that the lighting looks fantastic.
@gage_wolf
Speak for yourself. You're right. Minecraft exists everywhere, while Bayonetta 2 doesn't, and wouldn't if Nintendo didn't do something about it.
@Einherjar
"What good is the WiiU if it only offers the brown grey sludge found on any other system there is?"
"What the WiiU really needs in an audience, that isnt blinded by the mainstream media, by "doodbro" attitudes that claim "cartoony games are for kids and should die out", by critics who praise graphics over gameplay."
What does any of this have to do with Minecraft?
"Why would we need 3 consoles that offer the same unoriginal content? Whats the point, if there is nothing that stands out anymore ?"
Because not everyone can afford to have multiple systems so it would be nice to see some overlap for exceptional titles.
"Everyone who wants to play it already got a system to do it on. The enthusiasts play it on the PC, the casuals on their phones and tablets and the middle of the road console gamers probably all have access to a PS3 or a 360."
I don't own it. I don't really play casual games on my PC, and I don't see Minecraft as a very dualshock friendly experience. Thus, I would buy it on Wii U, as would many other people.
"This is by no means the thing that the WiiU so desperatly needs.
If the system needs to be saved from anything, than the people who rather want to see a slew of mainstream titles that appear on any device possible instead of more bold, "out of the comfort zone" and unique titles."
So you're saying the Wii U needs to be saved from obscurity by hosting more obscure games? Riiiiiight.
@LUIGITORNADO
Who else would I be speaking for?
Yes, thank goodness Nintendo stepped in to save Bayonetta 2. The gaming world really needs more of this:

And less of this:

This is disgusting, and annoying.
Nintendo hardcore fans are the worst...
I just play nintendo and games that are realese in their systems but I just dont understand how can you be so arrogant and peeky...
At least someone is giving an alternative for a mobile like game so just play and buy who wants, end of story.
@gage_wolf Yes, it does. I don't see high-pumped action, super-crazy combat, and awesome fanservice in a game about blocks. So yes, we need LOADS more of that than Minecraft. It's everywhere already, so a WiiU version would be a waste of Mojang's time.
Besides, UCraft seems to support texture mods, which is already making it superior to any Minecraft console version.
@Kaze_Memaryu
"Yes, it does. I don't see high-pumped action, super-crazy combat, and awesome fanservice in a game about blocks."
Neither do I. I'm comparing marketing, mass appeal and sales, not gameplay mechanics.
But speaking of 'high-pumped action, super-crazy combat, and awesome fanservice.' Yes, the Wii U certainly has a shortage of that...
LOL, I can play Minecraft on my PC just fine.
Nintendo still needs Minecraft anyway. Putting it on the 3DS would print money for both sides
@gage_wolf
OMG SEXUAL CONTENT! Minecraft doesn't have any of that >_<
And gaming needs more GOOD, fast, fluid, combo-action games:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NHk7xMJs1M
So excuse me if I'm not crying your absurd remark that Nintendo should have paid for Minecraft OVER B2 when we can play Minecraft almost anywhere we want.
I shouldn't have even bothered. Your comment that Bayonetta is just fan service was the tip off to your ignorance.
@rjejr Agreed. Nintendo is adept at gameplay and control mechanics and that is something it can bring to this genre that the others are only okay at. I see a couple different approaches they could make.
A survival thing like Minecraft appeals to me. I keep imagining Samus stranded on a planet building a life for herself and activating parts of her suit. It's amazing in my mind's eye anyway.
Another possibility is a Zelda with world building, where some players build "temples" and groups of players play through them. A bit more like Disney Infinity.
That leads to the idea of maybe a mixed world like you suggest where Mario is hopping through Zelda temples and you just mix it all together via Amiibo.
All three of those appeal to me greatly.
I'd also go for a stellar Minecraft port if it was original and there are a couple good clones-but-different like Survivalcraft that have already been proven and could be great on the Wii U.
It's true all this shows is some tech. It's a good start, but there are so many intangibles that make minecraft itself great and no simple tech demo is going to convince me.
@gage_wolf That's the whole point: more action! The hack 'n slash genre has degenerated a lot lately, and Nintendo took it upon themselves to support a promising title.
Mass-appeal is a field Sony and Microsoft excel in. But the masses often miss the point of quality games, which Minecraft can hardly be accounted to, since everything "good" is entirely dependant of user input, not the game itself.
Besides, Nintendo does the exact right thing: they make a difference. Minecraft won't move even half as many systems as Bayonetta 2 will, and Nintendo is aware of that, considering how much they advertise Bayonetta on events alone.
@okamiki Doesn't really matter if its an alternative if its not good. You're asking us to like the game purely becasue it's a third party game? Look at Ubisoft and other "AAA" developers, they treat Nintendo owners like poopoodoodoocacapoopledoople and expect us to buy their crap, why should an indie dev be any different? NOTE: Not saying this game is gonna be crap, i just hope there is more to it then just.. create mode ala Minecraft, i want to fight stuff, adventure, mine, craft and hunt for food. If this is just put X block here to build a house, i won't get it.
Guys this is early in development
@Einherjar The whole 'dudebro' thing is over. There are only a very small amount of FPS 'dudebro' games announced for the PS4/X1. In fact there seems to be much more action adventure games coming than anything else....
Promising so far.
@Kaze_Memaryu Couldnt have replyd any better. Thanks man, you are the one ray of light at the end of the NL tunnel xD
If we should ever cross paths, be prepared to have a coke on my bill
@gage_wolf Well, @Kaze_Memaryu pretty much said anything i was going to say. But i want to add one thing:
Where in de frickin world did you get the idea that its all about comparing marketing, mass appeal and sales but NOT gameplay ? O.o
Thats the single point that differentiates games from movies !
Its ALL about the gameplay and nothing else, and sadly, Nintendo is the only company who still realizes that.
I no situation would it be a good decision to forfeit a new game for yet another rerelease of an old one, just because it sold well on other system.
What the heck happened that gamers became market analysts instead of, well, gamers ?
When did we stop caring for "man, that gameplay looks amazing" and cared more about "releasing this on that system would be a wise business decision, and would strengthen developer ties for the future"...
@Ichiban Fair enough. Still, most games announced are still mass marketed games following the ever same formular, copying each other because "that sold so well, lets make the exact same"
Much of what was announced didnt really try something new, something brave.
Thats why, say, Watch Dogs single, most marketed feature, the whole hacking shenanigans, was just a tacked on gimmick in the end.
Because the overall rest of the gameplay was just a safety routine.
Thats why Shadows of Mordor features the exact same combat system as the Arkham games, mixed with Assassins Creed climbing engine because both are very well recieved games, why go for something new, something bold.
Just look at its extremely revolutionary Nemesis System, its fantastic and, if it hold up against the promises made by the devs, its mindblowing.
And yet, compared to the incredibly in depth nemesis system, the core combat system just falls flat on its behind.
My whole "dudebro" rant wasnt so much against the flood of shooters, but these focus group tested games in general.
So many fantastic ideas dragged down by features that are just there to boost the mass appeal.
Intriguing.....
@Einherjar
yawn
Nintendo is a for profit company, they are not ALL about the gameplay, in reality they are ALL about the Benjamins. And at the moment they are spending more than they are making. If the Wii U was selling like hot cakes we would not be having this conversation, and I would gladly ignore Bayo 2 because it wouldn't matter. But that's not the case - Nintendo isn't doing well, and thus it's interesting to talk about why or how they could do better. It's a natural point of interest. Just as a sports fan talks about things they think their favorite team could do better. Gamers became 'market analysts' or stopped always just saying 'man, that gameplay looks amazing' when we became adults and acquired critical thought. I still think plenty of things look amazing, but that's a pretty boring use of a comment section to just blindly praise everything...
Whatever point you are trying to make now no longer has anything to do with Minecraft or Bayonetta 2. But I'm bored, so here goes:
Minecraft was created by a tiny little indie company. It was not focus grouped or put together like some expensive AAA Frankenstein title your describing. This tiny little indie company released their unfinished game, and boom people loved it. It allows kids and adults to build awesome structures or play different games within its' worlds. It's like the ultimate Lego set. Instead of corporate think tanks or old men in suits deciding what features make it into Minecraft, the people that play the game designed most of the features, mechanics, graphics, and characters. Due to this untapped potential for creativity and simplicity the game slowly became a mega success almost completely by word of mouth. It not only promotes creativity, but doesn't focus on realistic graphics whatsoever and has single-handedly made pixel art cool among young kids. Everything you're ranting about - brown sludgey graphics, focus-grouped decisions, gimmicks, etc. are exactly what Minecraft ISN'T. So what are you arguing about?
@gage_wolf If you STILL dont get what im trying to say, youre rather slow on the uptake buddy. And im not repeating myself again.
@gage_wolf
You talk about Bayonetta like it's shovelware as opposed to your own personal opinion. In fact I'm quite upset with this entire comment section. I mean, it's like everyone either hates Minecraft in general or hates the idea of a clone.
Where's the love? Hell, where's the voice of reason or integrity in this entire section? I'm looking forward to some crafing love on Nintendo consoles personally and with plans for future expansions already in place, I hope this game has enough to standout.
@gage_wolf
Really? So you would rather play Minecraft on Wii U, a $10 indie game you can play on your phone, than Bayonetta 2, a masterpiece scoring perfect tens across the board that otherwise would not have existed?
Sometimes I think gamers or more concerned with how well their team "scores" sales-wise then they actually care about playing great games. I mean sure, Minecraft is a great game and all but uh, when it's rampant availability is taken into consideration, and the general scope of the game, compared to an action masterpiece that the world would have never seen otherwise, I really don't think it's even a competition. Why give up a masterpiece for a $10 phone game you can already buy on every platform that exists?
Pretty sure Nintendo is a console for exclusives, for games that you cannot otherwise obtain. And I'm pretty sure Bayonetta 2 fits that bill, while Minecraft does not. I mean to each their own, but the fact of the matter is Minecraft isn't on the system. That's life. Besides, I can already hear the general response had Nintendo chosen Minecraft over Bayonetta 2. "Really? You let one of the greatest action franchises to ever exist die, just so you could put a $10 game about blocks on your console?" Yeah, people would be having a fit over that. And I would agree with them.
I want great games, not what's popular or what "sells". That mentality is what brought the onslaught of casual games for the last decade, and I'm glad it's over. Nintendo is finally focusing on great games over what sells, and here we've got people who want them to go back to what sells rather than giving us great games. Five years ago, Splatoon would have featured Mario, because that's what sells. But I'm thankful that Nintendo has chosen to go the route that is likely to yield the least amount of sells. They know it and we know it, yet they still chose not to feature Mario. They know Bayonetta 2 isn't going to break records on Wii U, but they chose to fund the game anyways.
Like I said, to each their own. But don't be surprised if the rest of us don't feel likewise. I just can't see the logic in forfeiting a fully fledged masterpiece (just check review scores, the game is scoring off the charts) that wouldn't have otherwise existed, for a cheap indie game I can already play on my iPhone, my PS4, my Xbox One, my PC, and soon, my Vita.
Ya it'd be great to have Minecraft on Wii U. But at the expense of Bayonetta 2? Might as well flush it down the toilet for a ham sandwich.
Not really interested, but it will be entertaining to see how it fares in the future near launch. Honestly I want it to be successful simply because I feel like it'd be a way to show Mojhang that they made a mistake not to put it on Wii U.. Who am I kidding, the console with that mario chap isn't good enough, amiright?! sarcasm
@brandonbwii agreed. I want it to succeed even though I'm not big into the crafting genre.
Day one buy for me since i didn't buy minecraft...I wasn't giving them my money but this one i will
This game looks awful at the moment; however as people have pointed out that it's still in early stages I'll be keeping an eye on it to see how it progresses.
I hope it sells well as I do think minecraft would havebsold well. Dont get why people are slagging it off as a clone game when there are hundreds of cloned fps' s trying to be COD. At least ucraft has said from the start its a copy.
I don't see the problem with the visuals I can't be the only one that noticed Minecraft looks like crap.
IMHO Nintendo don't just buy things because its popular they try to get/save original content.
Just because this isn't official Minecraft or Nintendo doesn't mean it won't be perfectly good for build square things.
@S-Miyahon I haven't. But the eshop and appstore quite different store fronts. There might be a couple of dodgy games slipping through but there is no need to assume this will be one of the. Its an unknown right now so I can't understand all the negativity.
@gage_wolf Did you just challenge yourself to think "Hm how much bullcrap can I shovel and fill my sentences until people reading this get so annoyed they stop responding and I win?"
Please leave your comments are a disgrace the moment you brought Bayonetta 2's sales data into here disregarding the fact it hasn't even launched WorldWide yet.
@gage_wolf
Nintendo tried to be part of the mainstream gaming and it didn't work out great for them. Instead of having another current console that appeals to the mainstream and Nintendo fighting for a piece of that pie which they lost last time, why not do their own thing and bring something different? I'm not sure about you, but I'm tired of the same old FPS' that are saturating the market or devs doing what every other devs are doing because that what sells.
The industry needs different and new gameplay experiences to keep gaming fresh.
I'm pretty sure Bayo2 won't be a system seller here in North America, but just because it won't be, doesn't mean Nintendo truly wasted their money on publishing it. It's a big gamble financially for sure, but Nintendo gets my utmost respect for giving some Core gamers what they want and promoting a niche title. Let the other 2 companies pump out FPS' with shiny graphics for their respective systems (nothing wrong with that), but I think many gamers just want to play something different and not being force fed the same crap over and over again.
I don't get. Why I see so many people complaining about ucraft? This developers are making the difference and bringing a version of the game many of u like. Support this guys that want to make games for Wii u since everyone else is sabotaging the Wii u by not giving us anything but hope but not delivering.(like destiny)
Whoever is interested in Minecraft at this point already has Minecraft on multiple platforms, be that Windows, OS X, Linux, Java platform, Java applet, Android, iOS, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Raspberry Pi, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, or PlayStation Vita. Putting Minecraft on the Wii U or even 3DS will not make that much difference now. At least a good clone has the chance to do something different or unique to the formula.
@gage_wolf @Einherjar Neither Bayonetta 2 nor Minecraft will make a difference long term for the console. Minecraft for the reasons above. Bayonetta because while the action and gameplay is great, the sexual exploitation does turn people away. No matter how great the gameplay reviews, at the end of the day it is not something my young daughter needs to see her father playing because I don't want her thinking that is an acceptable way to dress and behave. Nintendo is the console that sells and targets to families.
From what I am reading, Fatal Frame 5 is having a similar problem. Instead of focusing on the gameplay aspects that fans like, they spent more time dumping fan service into the game to the point of importing the "boob physics" from Dead and Alive 5 and creating situations that completely break any suspension of disbelief in the game. Again, no matter how interested I may be in the gameplay or story, the developer's choice to focus on that alienates potential audience (and my daughter will never see this in my house). Also, I doubt I am the only console owner/parent that feels this way.
So in truth, neither will be huge system sellers for different reasons. Bayonetta 2 has a some amount of potential to sell hardware to the die-hard Bayonetta fanbase, but it is niche and thus limited.
@Darknyht I never said that Bayonetta will be a system seller. But its a new game and thus, far more important than the rerelease of an old one that, at this point, is available on 3 different platforms that are superior by default.
And the game doesnt have its age restriction for no reason. Of course your daughter shouldnt see / play it, sexualized or not.
And to be honest, i highly doubt that your daughter wil grow up to become a demon killing wich, so i dont thing that Bayonetta will be a role model she even takes into consideration.
But its funny if you think about it. "Sexualized" women seem to be dangerous than slaughtering masses of monsters, bloodsplatter and gore includet.
Also, if youre (not you in particular, im generally speaking) offended by the "sexynes" of a video game character, i thinkyou have bigger problems with your own sexuality.
If shows like Game of Thrones, which is practically soft porn for the most part can get away scott free, whats the problem with posing wiches is catsuits ?
People arent offendet by half nude popstars, sex scenes in movies, sexy ads but by imaginary video game characters ?
At the end of the day, Bayonetta is one of the strongest female characters around, with quite a lot of personality. The magic hair thing is tied to japanese myths and the idea, that they form her suit is, in my opinion, quite clever.
So, that shes half naked when attacking is just a design choice that isnt really worth the fuss.
If you ask me, the "damsel in distress" trope is far more offending than a woman who has no problem to play out her sexuality.
Id find it far more disturbing if she was dressed in a leather catsuit and behaved like a wallflower. Her sadistic, dominant personality matches her attire, and thats all i care for.
Weve seen more sexualization in your run of the mill F2P MMORPGs.
@Einherjar If you want to go there, it is also a large part why I don't have cable, use Netflix. In general limit television and together with my wife decide what all my children can watch. I don't like the zombies my kids become when they get too much television. But I do agree that the "Damsel in Distress" trope is just as bad as the woman acting out a male created power fantasy of how women should look and act.
For me it is the difference between the Samus Aran of most Metroids and the Samus Aran portrayed in Other M. Samus Aran was always potrayed as the "Hunter" that the Space Pirates fear. She goes solo into somewhere no one else dares and kicks butt. And while you get the fan service for a quick completion, it is not the primary purpose of the game or character. On the other side, Other M cheapened the character and turned her into a little more than a male power fantasy.
The same goes for violence. There is violence that carries weight to it and there is violence that is nothing more than voyeurism. Luke Skywalker probably killed tens of thousands of soldiers when the Death Star exploded, but Lucas didn't show slow motion closeups of them being incinerated. On the other side there is Saw where the voyeurism of the violence and blood is the point and the paper thin plot is just a means to present it. But violence is a part of our world, my children will understand that. However, I will not revel in Roman coliseum-style violence (extreme violence as entertainment) nor do I want to teach my children to find pleasure in it.
Bayonetta despite being a strong character is less than a Samus Aran. Bayonetta is defined mostly by her voyeurism and sexual provocation, and her strong attributes is required so that she can be voyeuristic and provocative. Samus Aran is written to be strong and powerful, and with the exception of the Other M the exploitation is keep in the background.
I'll be watching this game with great interest. Screw Mojang haha!
@Einherjar
HBO, where Game of Thrones is aired, is a cable network known for having very adult oriented content. Nintendo systems are not. So when they make 'edgy' choices such as funding Bayonetta 2 or opting to throw Samus in a bikini in Smash it seems even more drastic simply because everything else they do is super safe, wholesome family entertainment. Sony and Microsoft already host a lot of mature games, so the first Bayonetta fell right in with the mix on those systems. There's no controversy there.But to see a clip of a woman holding two guns and spread her legs while the camera zooms into her crotch alongside clips of a yarn dinosaur and a pink marshmallow floating around a clay world seems totally out of place.
I just don't see how Bayo 2 fits on the Wii U. Let's say it draws in a few people to buy the Wii U due to it's sexy action style. But after they beat it, what else are those people going to want to play? Captain Toad? It's like Nickelodeon airing one really sexualized adult program right after NickToons.
My biggest concern is that the developers other title is BBU which has some issues, to put it mildly.
It should be interesting to see what happens with this title — to see what it amounts to in the end. Microsoft would have to go to "look at feel" to stop it, which can be tough. It will have to change up some of the materials and monsters — then it should be OK since you can't copyright game types/genre.
@gage_wolf
If you notice, Nintendo is playing the opposite game than MS (and Sony).
Nintendo, mostly generally-acceptable (family-acceptable) games with a few edgy titles for the adults so they might buy the system and have a little bit different to play when the kids are in bed.
Microsoft (and Sony) generally start with the edgy crowd and hope to get them to buy the console since they use it to have their kids play a few generally-acceptable (family-acceptable) games earlier in the day.
Think about how MS went with Kinect and how Nintendo treated the Wii.
@Stucazzo
Where is the tie between 'pumping out FPS's' and Minecraft? At no point did I say Nintendo should just follow what the other systems are doing. I simply said Nintendo should have made Minecraft a priority earlier in the U's lifespan, probably more so than funding a niche action title. I'm not really bashing Bayo 2, I just don't think it will do much for sales, and obviously the Wii U needs sales.
@ModestFan93
and the rest of you that only see things in black & white - this is just my opinion. Life will be filled with people that have opinions different from yours. Get used to it.
@gage_wolf Which would also mean: Get rid of ZombieU, Call of Duty, Assassins Creed, Mass Effect, Watch Dogs, Resident Evil etc ?
Because they dont "fit" ?
Hmm, makes you wonder why the Gamecube never had any influential Resident Evil titles on it, or why games like Mad World or No More Heroes never saw the light of day on the Wii...oh, wait.
On the flipside, im glad that consoles like the PS3, with all their adult content dont get cartoony games like Ratchet and Clank, Little Big Planet or even Katamari...oh...
Oh, and the Samus in a Bikini thing ? Really ? You do know that Samus was portrayed like that from the very beginning, right ? It was your speedrun reward to see her in skimpy clothes, the orange bikini for instance was featured in Fusion. Its freakin swimwear. Whats so sexualized about it ? Should she wear a burka instead ?
Youre really saying that her Latex catsuit is less sexualized than her in a regular, everyday bikini ? Because no one seems to have such an issue with Zero Suit Samus in general.
Also, you should take your "attack" on @ModestFan93 to heart yourself. We get that you dont like Bayonetta, but your opinion isnt the universal standard. Get used to it.
@Darknyht
You cant really compare Bayonetta and Samus, as both have very different characters. Like i said earlier, Bayonettas entire design wouldnt work if she would behave different.
Samus is cool, almost coldhearted, collected and calculating. Her job has utmost priority and nothing stands in her way, not even harmless wildlife.
Bayonetta on the other hand is brashfull, sadistic, dominant and cocky.
On the flipside, shes very caring to those she is fond of.
If you leave out other M, both share a very important characteristic: Both dont take orders from anyone and solely do their own thing no matter the cost.
Both are ruthless in their own ways and yet, both have a very kind, motherly side to them.
Of course Bayonetta goes for several tabus: It mocks religious cults, depicts punishments in a BDSM style fashion, features occult themes and isnt shy of showing violence. But there is one important thing: Its fantasy violence !
If people have no problems with hundrets of military shooters but get offendet by this, there is something seriously wrong with our world.
But i agree to your Star Wars / Saw comparison. And actually, im glad that you are among the few parents out there, who actually cares about what their children consume.
But i still think that people should be able to differentiate between killing fantasy creatures and real life creatures.
The point remains: Bayonetta is nothing a kid should play, and in my opinion, the sexualization is the smalles offender here.
I really like the idea of Minecraft clones on Nintendo systems. I'm not sure why some folks are such primadonnas. If we can get a halfway decent clone of an insanely popular game that will scratch that itch for many of us, then why would you deny that to us? The WiiU is my primary gaming system. Sure, I have a smartphone and a decent PC, but I like the idea of a game like Minecraft on the big screen, and having a WiiU version would be very handy for me. Too many naysayers out there that hold grudges.
@Einherjar
My attack? haha. Ok, I'm done with this. Have fun.
@Einherjar I agree that adults should be able to tell the difference, but studies show that kids and teens are not always able to. That is why ESRB and other rating systems are supposed to exist, but they are far from perfect (and publishers learn to manipulate them like studios do for movies). It is the reason that a plugged in parent is vital.
I don't have a problem with Bayonetta existing, but personally I find too similar to something like the Queen's Blade anime. The sexual provocation is the point, and the character traits are the dressing that provides the stage. It's like arguing that Keeping up with the Kardashians exists on television because of their sound business sense.
@gage_wolf I cant tell you how glad i am that you will now stay quiet
@Darknyht Absolutely right about parenting !
But i stoo have to disagree about your last paragraph.
The actual point is, that Kamiya wanted to make another Devil May Cry but couldnt, so he needed another over the top character to play the main part.
The same was done with Dante in Devil May Cry 3, he often was shirtless, muscular, handsome, cheeky, cocky and a ladykiller.
In comparison to Bayonetta, Dante comes off more arrogant than dominant, but everything else is pretty much the same.
Both characters are highly provocative by design and are meant to break some tabus. Its just the fact that people, for whatever reason, are more offended if woman do it than if men do it.
Just look at TV shows and movies. Naked men are perfectly fine, but god forbid if female anatomy is shown, thats an instant no no, even if both things are technically the same.
I still think that a character design that matches the personality is far less offending than, say, a hardened female middleage warriors, clad in an iron bikini, actng all tough and duty focused. THAT is far more sexualising than anything else.
Every time I see something by this guy (yeah, the developer is one guy), I become more and more convinced that he has no idea how to make appealing asthetics. His trailers and games just feel so generic. Yeah, I understand it's just one guy working on these games, but I feel like it shouldn't be too hard to take his minimal resources and make a more attractive experience. Though he might need some help if he wants to make an actually good game.
@Einherjar We will probably just have to agree to disagree. I don't remember them ever focusing as much on Dante's crotch/junk in his entire four games as I have seen of Bayonetta's in just the trailer footage. The Bayonetta trailers really need a Hawkeye Initiative like treatment with Dante in her place. That may make it a little easier to explain.
To be fully honest, I never really gave it any thought until I got married and had a daughter. Around that time (I was a new dad freaking out a little, as I grew up in a family of all boys) I read a book called "Strong Fathers, Strong Daughters" which talked about how much influence a father's choices and actions (even non-vocal ones) can have on their daughter's self-image. Since then, I have tried very hard to be more aware of how she may view what I am (or am not) doing.
@Darknyht
I like the way you think as a parent. Keep it up. You ever check out Avatar: The Last Airbender and/or The Legend of Korra. Great stories and entertainment that both adults and kids can enjoy together with awesome characters and role models.
@rjejr
I think those games closer to Minecraft, LBP, and Disney Infinity are going to be pretty hard for 3DS to pull off as they are more demanding performance-wise. If any games like that DO happen, it would be best on Wii U.
I've got to say, though. It must be hard for Nintendo to put such huge effort into Wii U games when the installed base remains so small. Especially in their own country where home consoles in general are becoming niche entertainment. (Always pains me to see this huge Zelda games get little numbers in Japan.)
So, it's no wonder that 3DS gets so much attention. BUT... We are both well aware of Nintendo's decision to combine the hardware teams and to unify the development environments for future consoles and handhelds. This should make it much easier to have games that grace both systems and compliment each other. This could potentially --almost-- double the first-party releases on each platform making each much, much stronger.
So, there's hope.
My further hope is that the "Wii" games and Wii Fit and all of that are moving over to a third platform, the Quality of Life platform that is compatible with the new consoles but also separate. This would be a way to gain back attention of the gaming-centric consumers as Nintendo has been starting to verbalize publicly. (It's kind of awesome that difficult games are still getting branded "Nintendo hard" by some. Nintendo should use that at some point.)
More hope.
"Realistic materials"
/footage of four doors right next to eachother with no walls
@aaronsullivan - "for future consoles and handhelds"
But by the time Fusion comes out I'll be too old for gaming
"It must be hard for Nintendo to put such huge effort into Wii U games when the installed base remains so small."
For all the discussion - I'm guilty - of the small install base I think it's still outselling Xbox One, but hardly anybody ever talks about how small that install base is and it still gets games.
And it is Nintendo's system so it's their job to work really hard to make really good games to increase the install base, nobody else is going to do it for them. Make good games, date them, and get them out on time. (Pikmin 3 was a launch window title that came out 9 months after launch so I'm not just talking about up coming games. DKC:TF got delayed as well, not as long but after Christmas for a holiday title is a noteworthy delay.) Doing only the 1st of those 3 things is going to keep the install base small. Making really good games is the easy part for Nintendo, it's the guys in marketing I feel bad for, they must have an eensy teensy budget to work with
Sorry for misconstruing your point, I know what you meant, I just saw an opening and ran w/ it.
@rjejr
Fair points but I meant it as a comparison to developing for 3DS where the user base is massively larger.
Couldn't give a flying monkey's about Minecraft. Instead if whining about not having an extremely overhyped Lego simulator, Wii U owners should be relishing the honour of having Bayonetta 2, touted as game of the year, as an exclusive to our system????
Keep your bloody Minecraft nonsense, its already going out of fashion anyways. I prefer my Wii U not be tainted by the whims of tablet jerks and spoilt children.
P.S, if Nintendo ain't chasing something, it ain't worth having. They have a good nose for garbage
@aaronsullivan - Yeah I know what you meant, why spend all that time and money developing games that nobody's going to buy on Wii U anyway, like Sony already came out and said it wasn't making AAA games for Vita anymore b/c they were putting all their resources into PS4 game development.
http://www.pushsquare.com/news/2014/05/sony_the_economics_dont_work_for_blockbuster_vita_games
That's why i added this at the end:
"Sorry for misconstruing your point, I know what you meant, I just saw an opening and ran w/ it." Apologies again.
Smooth tunneling.
Has to be the filthiest statement I've read, regarding a game.
But then I do have a very filthy mind.
Yeah, a video that's 85% bad font and grunge metal and 15% of placing 4 doors, 90 degree turn with shampoo commercial effects. I almost lost it when they dug up 10 blocks of dirt. This looks amazing. They showed off the dirt block and the dirt block with grass on top. And it's going to be released in 2014! Nintendo needs to wake up here. There's a real risk of killing off your own electronic distribution business if you starting pursuing quantity over quality. Develop some quality control quickly or your eshop business will suffer. No respectable indie developer is going pour hours and thousands in development costs to produce Wii-U titles for an eshop that's become a dumping ground for shovelware.
