Nintendo of America has decided that November will be the month of Pokémon on the 3DS eShop, with two Game Boy Color titles heading to the store before the latest releases arrive at retail. Nintendo's official website has updated listings to show what's coming and, in one simple page, has confirmed a release date for a title that a number of our North American readers have been demanding.
So, what's coming in this month of Pokémon in North America? Details are below.
- Pokémon Puzzle Challenge — 6th November ($4.99) — This GBC puzzle title was developed by Intelligent Systems and includes six different modes.
- Pokémon Trading Card Game — 13th November ($5.99) — Still the only 'mon trading card game released on Nintendo hardware, this will finally arrive in North America to join its shiny contemporaries on PC and iPad.
- Pokémon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire — 21st November — The big releases of the year on 3DS, these fresh versions of the popular originals will take us back to Hoenn, while incorporating a host of new features.
Are you excited about these eShop arrivals in November? Let us know.
Thanks to Lz and all that sent this in.

Bought and bought and it's about time.
YAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!!!!!!!!!
YES! My TCG cartridge loses its save data every now and then. As for Pokemon Puzzle Challenge, boy did I love that game until I traded it away. I'll be downloading at least that one, as soon as I get Deluxe Digital Promotion funds from downloading Smash Bros for Wii U.
Actually the DS sort of got a TCG game but it was Japan only and more of a "How To Play" practice play.
Still, hope Puzzle Challenge comes to Europe soon too. And with those 2 out the way and the RPG series not likely to come to VC, I sure hope the Pinball games are next...
call me crazy but i'd actually just want them to release pokemon yellow on the eshop ^_^
So, the rubbish spin-offs. Where's Pokemon:
Red,
Blue,
Green for Japan,
Yellow,
Blue for Japan,
Gold,
Silver,
Crystal,
Stadium,
Stadium 2,
Snap,
And those are just the original GB titles!
What about
Ruby,
Sapphire,
Emerald.
FireRed,
LeafGreen,
Coliseum,
XD,
All the others?
There was also a GB sequel to the TCG game that was Jap exclusive.
Great news! While they're at it, they could also make November the Month of Donkey Kong on the Wii U e-Shop, amirite?
Getting Pokémon TCG day one, for sure. I remember fondly the summer vacation when I borrowed my friend's GBC with that game and got completely enthralled.
No Pokemon Pinball? Unacceptable.
A little late on the news, eh?
So no classic games? Bummer
ITS A START!
@NintendoFan64
Since I got my 3DS in 2011, I have been wanting Pokémon Pinball too. The wait continues.
@ZenTurtle Never released because there's no point
@ZenTurtle There's no point in them, because you won't be able to trade.
yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and now it time to celebrate everyone start dancing
@Dipper723 Is trading so important?
______________________
Ya I probably would of gotten any of the old pokemon games if they released them, there are fans that want the games and of course they could make more money so they always got that going for them...
When I first saw the title I was thinking 'OH MY GOD YES POKEMON RED AND BLUE COMING TO THE ESHOP FINALLY' then I read the article and that changed too 'oh thats cool I guess'.
Pokemon Trading Card Game
PC - free
iPad - free
3DS - $5.99
Still no dang actual mainseries VC pokemon games... Dang it, I don't care about the unability to catch em all, I JUST WANT TO PLAY.
Took long enough.
Also, the title made me get my hopes up and think Silver/Gold were being released on the eShop. Even though I own a cartridge for Silver, I'll still hope...
@rjejr Pokemon Trading Card game on the GBC was a lot different from the TCG app they're offering now. You controlled a character that went around to each "gym" challenging people, collecting cards and decks and badges. The GBC version was like an actual video game based around the trading card game, while the one Nintendo offers now is basically a simulator of the actual trading card game. People that didn't play the game back in the day should probably pass, as (I imagine) the TCG has changed much since 1998. However, for people like myself who grew up with the original series and this game, its a nice throwback. I'm not interested in learning the new TCG but I still have great memories of the original version, so I will definitely pick it up when it comes on the eShop.
That said, I agree the $5.99 price point is way too expensive.
@Yellowtails So there is only some pokemon you can get from trading? dang...
Don't buy these and support the Pokemon Co's ridiculous stance on downloadable titles. They'll shovel this off on you, but not give us what we really want, which is eShop versions of the Gen I games patched to use 3DS wireless in place of the link cable. Somehow, re-releasing the originals 'contradicts the spirit of Pokemon' or some other sanctimonious nonsense. That and they don't want eShop games cutting into their sales of what's become yearly Pokemon shovelware.
DAMN! was really hoping for pinball
@ZenTurtle I thought the same thing. What disappointment. I was looking forward to see a Pokemon yellow,red and blue or even original gold and silver.
@Dipper723
Actually, the emulator supports wireless data transfer, you can do something similar on the VC release of the Zelda Oracle games to transfer save data to continue on another copy of the game. So I would say there is a point.
@ZenTurtle Exactly. Why do we get spinoffs anyway?
Don't rememeber the puzzle game, but hooray for the trading car game at last!
@Tsurii897
Some people might not share the same viewpoint as yourself, however
@NintendoFan64 Exactly. I'd much rather take that than Puzzle Challenge, now that the slightly superior Puzzle League Express is on eShop/DSi Shop.
In fact, since Pokemon Company actually let a company make a successor to Trozei on the 3DS eShop, why not do the same for Pinball? (Aside from Ruby & Sapphire Pinball on GBA)
@KillScottKill
It's because we've got to a point where we will have remakes of remakes soon. Also, we wouldn't be able to catch all the 'classic' new creatures, would we?
Is Puzzle challenge a sequel to Puzzle League N64? I am so buying them two virtual titles.
now just say when these games come out on the 3ds virtual console
games from game boy
donkey kong land 1 and 2
games from game boy color
donkey kong land 3
donkey kong country gbc version
game and watch gallery 3
Lufia: The Legend Returns
super mario bros. deluxe
I'd rather have Pokemon Blue/Red/Yellow, or Silver/Gold/Crystal. I never got into the Card game, I just find it to be boring.
@Porky It's similar but a bit smaller since it's a handheld title
Aww yissss, they're finally bringing the European games to the US. Now I can finally stop complaining on Club Nintendo.
Now, just to wait for Game & Watch Gallery 3...
Finally. Now just for pinball
@Joruus_Cbaoth An article is never late, it arrives precisely when it means to (brownie points for recognising the well-known movie quote).
But no, not really, we report stuff when we see it and / or decide it's something we want to write up, which we've only said a million times now over the years.
Yes! Been waiting for the TCG game for a while now. Might try out that puzzle game as well.
Not to be that guy who complains, but what about Pokemon Pinball? Either one wouldn't not horribly outdated by other games that exist like the two provided.
I'll probably pick up TCG. It's been years since I played that. It was fun.
Still puzzled as to why we haven't seen anything from the main series of games though.
Goodness. The Pokemon Company offers you two beloved Pokemon spinoff games, and how do you react? Stop acting so entitled. I for one am super happy we get these on the eShop, as they are both two of my childhood games.
About damn time...
Great. Now why can't we have Pokemon yellow or something?
FINALLY. Pokemon TCG. EU had it for what? 2 months already? Oh well. Better late than never.
Where's Pokemon Pinball?
Happy for the Pokémon fans, even tho I am not one. Would rather hear about the DK games coming to the eshop!
No Pinball? Boooo, no pinball!
@ZBomber - So the game they are selling for $5.99 is an old GBC game which really has no relationship w/ the app and free PC website and I was just thrown by the name? Just went back and reread it and it's written like it's the "app" but I see now where the paragraph said 2 GBC games and they just left that out of the game description, which is odd b/c the puzzle game clearly says GBC.
I have to say though if the game is like you describe it I would probably enjoy it more than a normal Pokemon game, it sounds like the side quest card game in FF8, which has a similar contemporary in Skylanders Giants.
Thanks for the heads up, I'll have to pass the correct info onto the kids.
Still waiting on Donkey Kong Countries and Lands...
@rjejr Yeah, the game that will go on sale on the eshop next month isn't related to the Pokemon TCG programs released on PC and Apple products.(The article is kind of confusing, they really should add GBC in there). The GBC game uses the first 3 sets of Pokemon cards (Base Set, Jungle, and Fossil; basically the first 151 pokemon) where the new one uses the modern day TCG, which has over 700 Pokemon and I'm guessing different rules/cards/strategies. I haven't played FF8 yet so I'm not sure how similar it is to that, but I would definitely recommend checking out videos of it on Youtube before buying it. Honestly it is a bit dated at this point, but I imagine if you or your kids are big Pokemon fans, especially of the original generation, they might get some enjoyment out of it. The big draw of the GBC game is the story mode, where you build your own deck(s) and use it to beat gym leaders. But again, the game originally came out in 1998 in Japan so it is pretty limited in terms of what content is in it. The free TCG doesn't have a story mode as far as I know, but the content is a lot more extensive and (I think) you can battle friends, which I don't believe you'll be able to do with the GBC version.
Here is a random video of the game just to get an idea http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktwdl_UmqbY
Poke'mon Trading Card Game was my first GameBoy Color game and didn't sell it until 2 years ago when I sold all my other Poke'mon games to help pay for a car repair. I will be so excited to be able to play it again.
Pokemon TCG on GBC is a far superior gameplay experience to the one on iPad IMO. Cards are far easier to access (you need to either buy physical cards or play duel after duel after friggin' duel just to unlock a single booster pack), duels are faster paced, and you don't need to be online to play.
I would, without hesitation, pay full price for a Pokémon TCG sequel in the spirit of the GBC original for the 3DS.
I'm also really glad that Puzzle Challenge is being released in the eShop. I hope that the Australian/European release won't be too long a wait.
Hopefully this is agateway to releasing the classics like red and blue on the eshop. They could charge $30 for the early games and I'd still buy it!
@rjejr but on ipad and online you need to drop a crapload of $$$$ to get good. I mustve spent AT LEAST $100, and I only have a 40% win rate.
@icedude545
Not quite, gens 1 and 2 run on a completely different engine than their successors. They aren't compatible at all. It'd take a lot more than a little programing, you'd have to remake them.
Emulating existing features is at least possible, making the older games compatible with technology thats completely beyond their time is a tall order if anything. If you add features your no longer just emulating, and thats exactly what the VC is for.
Oh my god. Imagine if they released RBY/GSC on the eShop and changed things a bit so that you could transfer Pokémon from them to XY/ORAS. I know those games have a different IV/EV system and no abilities/natures set, so that would muck transferring, but I can dream...
Headline: Two Pokémon GBC Games Coming To North American 3DS VC!"
Me: "What? They are actually adding Gold and Silver to the VC? Finally! Where is my wallet?"
Article: "Pokémon Puzzle Challenge and Pokémon Trading Card Game!"
I mean, I'm sure they are alright games, so I wouldn't say I'm complaining. But the article did get my hopes up a bit for some games I've been waiting a while for.
On a side note, it is pretty cool that my computer is autocorrecting Pokemon to Pokémon.
@Drawdler That would be very bad, especially if save states were included like it seems all VC games except 3DS Ambassador GBA games are. Anyway, it seems that you only need XY and ORAS to catch all Pokémon from gens 1-6.
@rjejr: Well since you can get all the cards in-game in TCG for GBC opposed to buying actual booster packs, I'd say it's a good deal. Especially since GBC game actually feels like a Pokémon game and ain't just simulation and one booster pack costs as much as the GBC game (at least in where I live).
@icedude545
That doesn't work for the first two generations. Game Freak completely overhauled the series for gen 3, the way the Pokemon and their stats are generated is different, so the data the newer games need is nonexistent. At best, they would end up as MissingNo. or some other glitch.
None of the gen 3-4 games are made with online in mind, never-mind connecting to an app like Pokebank. With multiplayer your basically tricking the game into thinking your doing it natively, Pokebank isn't something you can do at emulator level. That would no longer be just emulation, and it's a lot of work for a $6 rom that they want to put up on the store on the cheap.
There wouldn't happen to be any word on if the TCG will have multiplayer like some other VC games?
@Grumblevolcano I don't mean adding natures/abilities/the later IV and EV systems in, I mean somehow changing how the data was stored or making a potential transfer to Gen VI program "translate" a Pokémon so it works like it would in the later gens. Like I said, pipe dream, just thought it was a cool idea if they did come to VC because you could continue using Pokémon you got from them.
I don't see an issue with savestates though. I know it's kind of hard to ignore they're there, but if someone wants to play the game like it was originally made, there wouldn't be anything stopping them from ignoring savestates.
To all the people demanding main Pokemon VC games with online, trading, Pokemon bank support and hacked so you really can catch 'em all (don't forget unlimited use TMs as well). Why would the Pokemon company be interested in offering this? The $40 remakes sell millions of copies, why they would put that under threat for a $5 Virtual console release? They would have to sell 8 times as many to have the same revenue.
Plus all the demands to make them useful would be non-trivial to achieve (some moreso than others).
@Drawdler What I was getting at is you could create a savestate before doing a transfer and once done you could reload the savestate and repeat infinitely hence having a large number of potentially "perfect" Pokémon in your Gen 6 save file.
@ZenTurtle "rubbish spin-offs"
I assume you've never played them at all.
Haha, we (speaking for myself, as well) are a spoiled bunch, aren't we?
If I didn't have my original gbc with Pokemon Puzzle Challenge, I would download it. As for the Pokemon Trading Card Game, I'll pass. Too luck based and energy costly for my taste compared to the modern TCG.
@Late - Think anybody uses those booster pack codes, I have a stack of about 70 or 80 of them, maybe I can eBay them?
My son, who collects the cards and toys and games and many a t-shirt but doesn't play the online version of the card game will probably buy this game for $6 as he said it sounds good.
@Cyb3Rnite
Why make such accusations? I played them, and found them to be lacking. Perhaps "rubbish" is too strong a word, but I certainly thought they were very poor in some areas. That's it.
@AltDotNerd
As someone who owns the EU version of the download from the Eshop for TCG. You cannot use the multiplayer features at all, you can't even talk to the attendants at the desk for the multiplayer.
@happylittlepigs GF said they don't appreciate that idea.
@Interneto Bummer. I have always been DYING to play the original Gen 1-3 games on eShop after my FireRed bit the dust the first step I took out of Victory Road to the Elite 4. Literally. The very first step out of Victory Road. My sapphire died as well, but I played through it 3 times. Those old games just aren't good in terms of longevity, that's why an eShop version with no crashes GUARANTEED would be perfect. Oh well.
@Starwolf_UK I don't even want hacks or infinite TMs or any of that crap. And quite frankly, they could charge 30 or 40 bucks for one of the classics, and I would pay it. It's cheaper to do that than to get a GB or GBC and the game, play it for 3 months, then get a new one because one of the two crashed. If they released Ruby and Sapphire on the eShop for $20 in addition to Alpha and Omega, I would prob get both.
FINALLY get the TCG but it's way later than it needs to be. Price is expected (and perhaps a little high) but at least it's here. I don't know where my original cartridge is anymore and I've been itching to play this for some reason.
@UnseatingKDawg
donkey kong land 1-3 and donkey kong country 1 gbc version for 3ds virtual console
and donkey kong country 1-3 for wii u virtual console
and get game and watch gallery 3 for 3ds virtual console
@andrew20: I'd love to oblige, but Nintendo of America just doesn't care.
Looooove Puzzle Challenge, so excited to get it again!
Please please let them do a new version of that game someday. They did a new version of Trozei for petes sakes.
@icedude545
I think something is getting lost in translation here. It works for gen 3 and up because the way stats and generating Pokemon works the same way. All they really have to do is convert them to the same fomat as the new game.
For gens 1 and 2 its too different. Things like the personality value don't exist, so there isn't anything to 'translate' from if you will. That determines the ability, nature, and gender. The latter is determined by the attack stat in gen 2, the fomer don't exist.
http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Generation_III#Major_alterations_from_Generation_II
When I said its "too much work" I mean for an 18yr old game selling for $6. They would have to remake the whole thing, which really isn't worth it. We're no longer talking about straight-up emulation anymore either. They'd be better off releasing FR/LG, and maybe an app like Pokemon Box R/S that connects to Pokebank.
