If you're one of those people who likes to move that 3D slider up to "max" then you might want to stop reading now. Square Enix has confirmed that its upcoming Nintendo 3DS title Final Fantasy Exporers will not feature stereoscopic 3D graphics output.
It's not all bad news, though — Final Fantasy Explorers will have Circle Pad Pro support, and can also utilise the additional buttons on the New 3DS. So far, there is no word of a release outside of Japan, but our fingers are eternally crossed.
Is the lack of 3D support a deal breaker for you, or are you still looking forward to news that Final Fantasy Explorers will make it to the west? Will it make you dust off your underused Circle Pad Pro? Fire us a comment!

Wonder if next we will star seeing "Runs on 3DS too!" stickers on game boxes...
I still really want this game to come out in the west, but it's disappointing to see them abandon 3D for it.
Isn't 3D kind of the whole point of the system? It's kind of the system's name. It irks the crap out of me when games on the 3DS disregard 3D.
It's not good news but it isn't a deal breaker either.
Farts.i like the 3d effect so much, not supporting it on the 3ds will often kill my interest in a game if it's missing. As it ultimately makes the game less graphicly impressive compared to its contemporaries.
Wow that's thoroughly disappointing. But of course any game in the FF series that is part of or like the FFCC subseries is a game I'm gonna buy. My avatar proves that hehe
Yay, Squenix is lazy again! I mean, sure, it's an action game, 3D isn't too important since holding your 3DS perfectly still during heated combat is close to impossible. But it's still further proof of Squenix' laziness to see them cut corners like that.
Not a dealbreaker, but I'm not gonna get any Squenix games again, anyway. Bravely Default taught me mot to trust them anymore.
Really???
@TruenoGT @Kaze_Memaryu
Of course nobody believe it when Square Enix says the 3DS is not powerful enough to run this game on 3D and call them lazy..... but when GameFreak says the same thing, or Nintendo says the 3DS is not powerful enough to run SSB with circle pad pro people believe them without question
Not even 3D-enabled on the New 3DS? Dang.
It's a Square Enix game on a Nintendo console, they never come to the west uless Nintendo themselves localizes it, but they should since the 3DS is only getting 5 games released in the west in 2015, and one of them is exclusive to the New 3DS
Fair enough. Even Pokemon had its fair share of problems when it came to the 3D feature.
There is only so much you can do with the little buddys hardware.
I guess these problems will be gone once the N3DS hits the shelves, It should have enough power to support more fancy games in 3D.
Also, the 3DS is more powerful if it doesn't use 3D, so that's why this and Pokemon left out 3D.
@Dipper723 I know about Xenoblade getting west release. What are the others?
No 3D. Wow. I'll still have to have it but i am disappointed. I AM one of those people that turns the 3D slider all the way up.
@DualWielding I don't believe any of them. Like I've said before if they wanted it there from the beginning it would be there. In the case of Pokemon their excuse was not valid at all. The game didn't look anything near as good as other games graphically on the system and what 3d they did use slowed the game too much. I think it was more they didn't know how to use the tech as well as others and didn't bother with it. Imo, LAZY! Smash was also bad but not Lazy. I think from the first day They decided on no 3d so it was not even a factor day one. In this case not Lazy just neglected!
@Einherjar Don't buy that either. More power just means they can make a game even better graphically and they can still leave 3d out. To some it's just a feature and not a requirement which I get buy don't really like. I want to see my games run in 3d because like was said by @Jim_Purcell the 2d doesn't look as good and looks more washed out as opposed to 3d of which it was designed for!
Whatever. I'd hardly give it any thought.
@Ufaowl I said "one" of the five games is exclusive, that being Xenoblade.
I am maybe one of the few people who doesn't use the 3D on the 3ds at all. I can see why people want to use the 3D but SE might have use all their resources for the game and didn't have enough memory to run the 3d in the game.
They may have had to pick either the 3D or use the Circle Pad Pro and they went with the CPP since they thought that Controls > 3D effect.
Oh and if Resident Evil can use 3d and still after all these years be one of the best looking games on the system then nobody else has any excuses. Plus they to this day have some of the deepest 3d still after over 3years now!
No biggie. My 3D slider broke off so I can't adjust that setting anyway - my 3DS XL is permanently in 2D mode now. (Yes it kind of sucks. But not enough to pay for getting it fixed.)
@Dipper723 No, I mean what are the other 4 games in 2015? Not only for New3DS
Pokemon X/Y succeeded with almost non-existent stereoscopic 3D so this one might do fine.
@Spoony_Tech Well, to be honest, i couldnt care less about the looks of a game as long as its a blast to play really.
If it didnt work, it didnt work. For me, its not really a reason to make such a fuss about it.
Its also not the first title to do it. And rejecting it because "3D is what the system is all about" is like saying "Tropical Freeze is garbage because it doesnt use the WiiU Gamepad, the one thing the system is all about"
Square Enix is worse with every one game.
I won't buy this. I'm highly disappointed with "no 3D" for only 3D hardware to go on the market. I love games in 3D, but won't pay a full price for something that is not made with it. Maybe after a price drop.
BIG black point for you SE.
Okay, here's the thing people....
I love the stereoscopic 3D feature, but if a developer feels they can't pull it off and make the game they want to make...then it's not the end of the world.
This is real, genuine, third party support for Nintendo that is not slapdash, delayed, missing feature ports.
I'm excited to see more adventure/rpg type games coming to 3DS, and this one looks like it could be pretty cool.
@Ufaowl Fossil Fightes Frontier, Story of Seasons, Code Name Steam, and I don't know the other one
@Pokefanmum82 There are 5 games coming in 2015? O_O
Hey atleast it supports the Circle Pad Pro! I don't mind this move that much considering I don't use 3D much and I prefer a better control scheme over the 3D effect, if that was the factor in decision or whatever. In comparison I don't like the lack of Circle Pad Pro support on Smash, whereas the same game supports the C-stick on New 3DS. I know they said that it takes 5% of processing power but it still seems a tad much. Also that they are considering launching an amiibo peripheral for 3DS which uses the very same infrared communication as the CPP.
Obviously having both would be nice as developers shouldn't skimp out on what makes the hardware unique. As long as the game is good, I probably won't have too many complaints.
@Ufaowl Monster Hunter 4 is another one coming out in 2015.
For those claiming there is only going to be 5 games coming out in 2015:
Did we even know about Fantasy Life a year out?
Most 3DS games aren't hyped up over a year in advance, some are...but many are not. This trend of hyping games for years is a product of the Playstation/Xbox AAA gluttonous development cycle where enormous budgets meet unrealistic expectations, endless hype and delays.
@ekreig Should point out that my 3D slider broke off because I dropped the 3DS XL - not due to normal usage. I've actually heard of it happening to at least one other person under the same circumstances, but this shouldn't be an issue for normal people.
Isn't this a game that was announced back at E3 2010?
Regarding the Circle Pad Pro and the new Super 3DS... I really hope Circle Pad Pro supported games wouldbe supported by the new Super 3DS out of the box. Like for example Resident Evil: Revelations and Monster Hunter 3.
I suppose it would need a patch from Capcom and I don't believe a second that they would update their old games.
It's deal breaker for me.
Hmm. I'd rather find out if it is coming west. Otherwise I may have to help teach my brother Japanese. lol!
EDIT: Ok, Ok. On Topic post now. While I'm not bothered at all by the lack of 3d (I can't use it) I understand that for those that do this is upsetting, but perhaps we get a better functioning game as a trade off?
I never use the 3D anyway so not a prob for me. I just hope it comes to the west!
@Spoony_Tech you don't seem to understand something. graphics aren't the only thing that uses system resources.
@argol228 Oh I understand perfectly well. If they want it there then it will be there from the beginning. Some of these companies are saying let's do that part last and if there room we will implement it if not oh well!
Aww. That is disappointing. I crank the 3D slider full blast all the time and it's jarring when a game doesn't support 3D. I think it makes the graphics shine. Otherwise, the graphics do look a tad long in the tooth.
@DualWielding I never said I'd ever believe those. Also, Pokémon X/Y at least has 3D during battles, which is halfay better than no 3D at all. And CPP is rather useless for SSB3D, anyway, though I'm really not buying Sakurai's justification.
But looking at this, it doesn't look a single bit more hardware-demanding than Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (which had full 3D support throughout), so this not having 3D is definitely not because of hardware limitations. And if it was, Squenix could at least build in 3D as an enhanced feature for those playing it on the N3DS.
@Kolzig Actually, no. MH4U is said to not support any N3DS features, so the C-Stick and additional shoulder buttons are actually emulating CPP feedback. That means every game with CPP support will be able to use the N3DS features without a single line of extra code.
@DualWielding Actually, people criticize GameFreak and Nintendo for those respective decisions.
Also, most people know GameFreak is notoriously bad at optimization.
@Spoony_Tech but....smash uses 3d...
@rbygscrsedppbw Yep, you're right, I was so caught up on the 3d I forgot it was the cpp and lack of picture posting to Miiverse. That's where it got neglected.
Not a big deal to me, I don't play all my games in 3D that much anyways.
If it is an excellent game, it won't be a deal breaker for me, but it does lessen my interest in the game somewhat.
This is GREAT news. This just means that they're focusing on using as much of the 3DS's meager power as they can to create theur massive world instead of wasting it on a gimmick that would use up way too many resources.
And by reading some of the comments here, it seems that no one wants to admit that the 3DS is very weak tech.
@Kaze_Memaryu
Explorers is said to have free roam in its world and that you'll be able to travel long distances. It's nothing like MH3U, which has many small areas that are separated by load screens.
I'd rather they not do it and make a good game than use 3D and make a crap game. Like those games that use the touch screen in the middle of using the rest of the controls. Looking at you, FIFA... the spiritual successor to the N64 controller!
@Spoony_Tech
Very.
Tiny.
Areas.
I get the opinion that gen 7 of the pokemon series will be graphically very similar to gen 6/ the gen 3 remakes, but will allow for use of the extra processing power of the New 3DS systems so that if you're playing the new pokemon titles on the new 3DS, you'll be able to utilize stereoscopic 3D everywhere in the game. But on the old 3DSs you'll be restricted to stereoscopic 3D only in the battles. A lot like how Gold and Silver were fully in color on a GBC, but could run just fine but without color of a standard GB/pocket. Or how Black and White featured video chat for online battles only if you were playing on a DSi, as standard DS/lite didn't have a camera.
@Ufaowl Mighty No. 9, Codename: S.T.E.A.M, Fossil Fighters: Frontier, Monster Hunter 4
I'm surprised by how many people aren't getting the game because of the lack of 3D support. Sure, it's darn disappointing, but it's not like I buy games for their 3D capabilities. I'm sure this will be a fine game with or without 3D.
I just hope this won't be a trend for future 3DS games.
Well that's just dumb. 3D is a great feature, especially for games with three-dimensional gameplay; it makes the world feel so much more alive and immersive. My interest in FF Explorers just plummeted.
@AVahne That's hardly a good reason, since the draw distance shown in the trailers is really low.
@Kaze_Memaryu
Still higher than games like Lego City and Monster Hunter.
I never use the 3D, anyways.... I can't for this to come west, if it does. ^^
@AVahne Hahaha, good one!
@Kaze_Memaryu
Whatever, ok sure the draw distance isn't much higher than Monster Hunter, but I still stand by the fact that the much bigger areas take up more resources than MH's. And so far, the framerate seems to be more stable than MH3U.
@Action51
Thank you for this comment.
Good - more processing power for enhancing the gameplay! I always leave the 3D switch in the "Off" position on my 3DS XL anyway...
If it comes over to the West faster then i don't care.
@DualWielding
Game Freak are known for really poor programming. They were bad at creating a tile engine from the GBA days, and X and Y felt like 3D models strapped onto a (poor) 2D tile engine. Some of the town sections, such as Lumiose city were a prime example of this. It was inefficient, to say the least. It didn't even feel all that graphically impressive, yet still managed to lag in 3D. Incompetence!
@mh1989 Dragon Quest is fine. VII/VIII/IX were all good. Final Fantasy : The Four Heroes of Light wasn't too bad (Better than Bravely Default anyway).
No 3D is very disappointing (why isn't it going to be in 3D?) but it's not a dealbreaker at all.
If I were Nintendo I'd refuse to let them publish it without 3D support. It'd be like somebody releasing a title that doesn't support Achievements or Xbox Live on the 360 or Xbone, which Microsoft would never allow to happen. There is no valid reason for them to not support a staple feature of the console, and it could get Nintendo in trouble for false advertising, to boot.
I want this game.
MH3U works really fine without 3D (disabled in Options), so it depends of the player's standards.
Good! 3D doesn't have to be shoehorned into every single game, just like Nintendo would have been wise not forcing sketchy touch controls into DS Zelda. Sometimes it's not helpful, sometimes it's to the point of being damaging. Given the ability of SE to go crazy with worlds, visuals, audio and the rest, having to not render the same game image twice offset (whether used or not) will give back a lot of processor and memory time to a better experience.
@tanookisuit @Spoony_Tech
I think thats exactly what it was, Game Freak aren't the best programmers, but being their very first 3D games ever they at least have an excuse for X&Y. They actually are just learning to program 3D games, so I think incompetence might be a bit harsh there @ZenTurtle.
It kinda reminds me of early 3D games like Tomba that used a mix of 2D and 3D. I can't say I blame them for doing that in this case.
If this game comes west before Dragon Quest VII, I am going to be a sad panda.
@Dipper723
"It's a Square Enix game on a Nintendo console, they never come to the west uless Nintendo themselves localizes it"
Uh, wut? This is the wrongest statement ever. Square-Enix chooses whether or not to localize, not Nintendo. It's on them to bring it to the west.
On 3DS Square-Enix has given us Theatrhythm, Kingdom Hearts DDD, Heroes of Ruin, Bravely Default, Theatrhythm: CC, and we're getting Bravely Second. So far we just missed out on Dragon Quest. Not to mention the scores of games they localized on DS.
We're getting this. The only game with Final Fantasy in the title that we didn't get (in recent history) was Type 0, and they're releasing that over here now, too.
@Zombie_Barioth
I don't think we should forgive them. They are not hobbyists, they are a game company. If they wanted help they could have taken inspiration from Coliseum, or XD, on the GameCube. They make a huge amount of money out of the game, they ought to have made the engine better.
This is on par with a Wii U game not using the gamepad, and that's fine.
Not every developer cares, and not every player cares. Many Super Nintendo games did not use the shoulder buttons, and quite a few N64 games did not support analog stick control. Many great Wii games did not take motion input of any sort.
And this way, they can really focus on making the game look good.
@ZenTurtle
I never said anything about forgiveness, just that I its understandable why X&Y are the way they are. They could have taken inspiration from the GC games, but they apparently wanted to keep the style of the 2D games intact. I doubt they'd have been much use. Assuming they have access to it that is, being a 15 year old game they had little to do with and all.
@SaGa_K Nintendo published Bravely Default in the west, not Square-Enix.
I didn't even know this was a thing until now. I could care less about the 3d as long as it's a good solid RPG. Speaking of which, any word on the Dragon Quest release for US? Or am I just living in false hope....
I'm very excited about this game and the lack of 3D is not a hindrance in anyway. I wouldn't care if they scrapped 3D altogether. I only bought a 3DS for Pokemon anyway :c
Ninten.....doh!!!
I haven't been using 3D lately.. When the new system rolls around that will change for sure!
I was about to leave a comment, but then I remembered that I really don't care about this.
I have a 2DS so that's fine.
Although I would love this game in 3d its still going to be a day 1 purchase for me. I hope it plays more like Phantasy Star Online than it does Monster Hunter is my only hopes.
