Visitors to participating GameStops in North America can engage in some early Trick or Treating. From now until 26th October, free codes are being distributed for owners of Pokémon X & Y to possess a Shiny Gengar holding some Gengarite.
The Shiny Gengar on its own knows Sludge Wave, a move it can't pick up through regular play. Once it mega-evolves, however, it turns a dazzling white and gains the ability Shadow Tag, which creepypastes opponents in place and prevents them from switching out or fleeing.
You can see the Mega Shiny Gengar in action below. Hex Girls (and Guys) in the UK should expect codes to hit GAME stores beginning 15th October.

Another GameStop event? Pass.
.... What's the point of even having the Wifi option of gifting Pokemon in Pokemon games when Gamefreak/Nintendo does stupid stuff like this and limit it to Gamestop?! Luckily... I should be getting Bayonetta 2 on its release date so I'll bring my 3DS the same day to Gamestop. Still though... this is dumb.

In mexico they have the same event, but the code distribution is online! No in-store distribution if you don't want to.
@Xiao_Pai Yeah they haven't done that since Pokemon Black/White and in that generation they only had one of that event (Victini). Maybe they'll bring them back once they get a hang of their 3d engine and can focus on other aspects of the games.
It seems Australia will be able to get it via wifi at certain EB Games stores, 4x Shiny Gengars for me!
I think we just have to accept that GameFreak forgot that Wi-Fi exists.

Unfortunately, the EBGames around where I live are only giving the codes out to people who have preordered either Pokemon Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire. Not sure if it's the same everywhere in Canada.

Would've been nice if this was around Nov. 21 so I can get both the code and Smash at the same time. Oh well, I guess I'll have to drop by EB Games later of this month.
@Shane904 It depends on the retailer. The person working at the time was very reluctant on giving more than 1 codes per person. Even after I showed him my two games! Then I asked my friend to get me one, she got two without asking for more!
I never really cared for Shiny Gengar, but man, the Shiny Gengar in that poster (with the light purple on the lower third of his body) looks much nicer than the Shiny Gengar in-game.

@Blast you don't even need to bring your 3DS, they're just gonna give you a code to get it.
A retail store in Mexico, called Gameplanet, did a limited distribution... There's no codes left right now
@PHDragoon No, that store is violating corporate policy. You should complain to a corporate office in Canada. The codes are provided for FREE as part of an agreement between Nintendo and EBGames/Gamestop, and you are NOT required to purchase or pre-order anything to get them.
They're allowed to ask you to pre-order ORAS, which is the entire reason Nintendo holds these events at Gamestop/EB, but forcing you to pre-order to get something they're supposed to give out for free is a violation of their agreement with Nintendo. You can also complain to Nintendo and report the store in violation.

You know, Gamestops are practically everywhere in the U.S. Is it really so hard to get a ride there sometime over a three week period and just grab a piece of paper?
@jarsys Well, these codes probably only work on a North American copy of the game in the first place.
These in-store events are business practices meant to get people to preorder games (Pokemon ORAS) while in the store.

So i have to drive 25 mins, go to a gamestop (ebgames) wait in line while a bunch of kids are yelling at their parents to get this game and that game, all just for a piece of paper with a number on it to download a character which i'll probably never use... meh pass(mystery gift was awesome)
I'm totally getting this, but when are they finally going to release Diancie, Hoopa and Volcanion? I ended up getting a Japanese Diancie in a trade, but I really want Hoopa and Volcanion (I've always dreamed of having a Fire/Water type). It seems weird to wait so long to release these X and Y legendaries when Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are almost out.

@Xiao_Pai that sounds kinda similar to locking disc content for dlc imo. I prefer that those of us that dont have access to gamestop can still do everything intended on the cartridge (although this gengar with sludge wave I can live without ) I could not do any of the Emerald events because i got the game well after all the events had passed, so I was stuck missing out on a bit of gameplay :/ It would be cool to have additional storyline as (free) DLC tho.
I understand that Nintendo (or GameStop) want people to wandering in the store. Yes, you might not give any interest but the child and other might do. BTW I'm living somewhere but the USA and having a hard time obtaining the code that require showing up at the store.

@BulbasaurusRex Well unfortunately I live in Canada (which is part of North America). Haven't seen a Gamestop in awhile, mostly EB Games near where I live. They didn't have the shiny Gengar; instead I got a Diancie (which I admit is pretty awesome).
Does anybody have an extra code for the shiny gangar? All the EB games near my location are all out already. They gave me the Diancie card for the next event insted. I'm willing to trade if anybody has an extra code.
