In a recent interview with PRANKSTER101 PRODUCTIONS, Image & Form's lead programmer Olle Hakansson discussed the inspiration for SteamWorld Dig, praised Nintendo's developer support, and gave a few details on a new title in the SteamWorld series.
Hakansson briefly discussed the next SteamWorld game as it's roughly a month from being formally announced; but he confirms that it is not a sequel to Image & Form's successful and well-reviewed SteamWorld Dig. Despite SteamWorld Dig being famed as a 3DS and Wii U eShop title, Hakansson had this to say about what platforms this new SteamWorld game might appear on:
We are actually here in GDC and Gamescom and [trying to] determine the details on which platforms [the game] comes first and so on. So it’s not finalized yet. Our goal is to release it on all the platforms we released SteamWorld Dig on, and a few more.

Come on guys, announce it already!
I don't know. Like I never understood the fun in it. All you do is just keep digging underground and it gets repetitive so fast.
My wallet is ready.
i was tempted to pick up the dsiware steam world game after playing dig, but i didnt as i hate tower defence games. so i will take a good look at whatever Image & Form deliver next. tower deviance is as appealing as a cross between hello kitty, tomodachi life and a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. TD is the essence of casual cured only by a dose of Fire Emblem or Advance Wars.
He needs to release it on Nintendo first because for some reason a number of Nintendo fans get butthurt when it comes out somewhere else first.
Dig was way too short, possibly the most I've payed for a game £ per hour!
It was very well made but so quickly over and had me baying for more!
If they're planing on a new game of similar mechanics I'll be tempted but it'll need to be much longer!!
@Prof_Clayton Huh? Like that's not the very same reaction of Sony and MS fans, right? Fanboys are fanboys, it doesn't matter what they are fans of.
If I could choose, I'd pick either an RPG or a Might and Magic-inspired turn-based strategy game. I think both those ideas could go over wonderfully well in the series's world.
@Artwark I feel the same. The game is kinda pointless to me. And on top of that, I'm personally not really into the art style and setting of the game.
Hurry up and show the game, what you guy's waiting for?
@Prof_Clayton If he is going to put it on the 3DS it needs to be there first. If it is a port it won't be any good.
Too bad it's not SteamWorld Dig 2, nevertheless, looking forward to whatever they come up with, this time around. As long as it comes to any other platform than mobile, I'm alright with it, I hate the lack of physical controls on smartphones.
It seems a lot of people want SteamWorld Dig 2 - me included!
I would love a bigger, more expanded Steamworld Dig. I played it through several times. Even if their next game isn't SW Dig 2, I hope we get it eventually.
I'd actually like more Steamworld Dig too, which isn't the sort of position I usually take. But this is very much a Mario Galaxy type of situation. Just change it a bit, add more stuff and make more of it!
(Hope you're reading this mr developer)
I hope they come up with something that has a more interesting gameplay concept than Steamworld Dig. That game seems to have a lot of polish and shows off the developer's talent, but the gameplay just seemed so boring and repetitive, and with no demo to convince me otherwise I was forced to pass on the game.
@Ralek85 Physical controls are a solved problem for both iOS and Android now. Tablet on a stand with a decent controller is no different to a gamepad on a stand and a pro controller in hand.
I would buy another game by these guys. Steamworld was short but sweet, and I rather have that than a bloated game that never ends, like Knytt Underground.
@unrandomsam What do you mean by solved?
I hope you don't mean those expensive, mostly ugly, completely clunky controller addons ... which seem pointless to me, since there are not that man smartphone games, worth getting a controller for, especially not ones, which could not be played more comfortable on another device anyways.
Funny you should mention the Gamepad, pretty much the same story there, or the CCP also.
If it's a tower defense game I'm gunna be pissed
