Nintendo UK has announced that Super Mario Kart will be hitting the European Wii U Virtual Console later this month — March 27th, to be precise.
What's more, as part of a special promotion in the run up to the release of Mario Kart 8, if you download Super Mario Kart you will receive a £5.49 discount on the price of the Wii U sequel, which is due to hit Europe on May 30th. You'll have until June 30th to take advantage of the offer, and the usual caveats apply — you'll only get the discount if you purchase the digital version of the game via the Wii U eShop, and both purchases must be made on the same Wii U system.
The game that started it all, Super Mario Kart originally launched on the SNES back in 1992. "To play it today is every bit as enjoyable as it ever was," is what we said when we reviewed the Wii Virtual Console release back in 2009. "Sure the graphics and sound may have dated, but the core gameplay is still top notch." It's worth noting that this is the US version of the game, and will run at a silky-smooth 60hz.
Will you be investing in this title when it hits the Wii U Virtual Console? What do you think about the chance to save some cash on Mario Kart 8 at the same time? Share your feelings with a comment.

Wow.... so many offers! GAME's free Racing Wheel with MK8, MK8 special edition and now this O.o
Does anyone know how much the Digital version (of Mario Kart 8) will cost?
I would love to be able to avail of this offer, but I have two Wii U consoles and Nintendo's terrible online management means I have to avoid digital purchasing if possible.
I can't play my online games on both my consoles. Terrible state of affairs.
Start your engines !!
Ah, hitting UK on the 27th. That means that Nintendo of America might decide to release it some time in September. Can't wait.
"*This is the US version of the game running at 60hz, and will be priced at £5.49."
Hooray!
Cool but nae. I dont like MK games that were out before MK Double Dash.
I would like it if they put Smash Bros 64 on eShop and get a discount on the upcoming Smash Bros tho.
Edit: Oh, UK
It's still my favourite of the series. Koopa Troopa FTW!
First we get no SMB3, now Europe gets SM Kart, and Blue Spiney bonus figurines???
I have the Wii version on my Wii U so I hope I am still eligible for the discount if I only pay £1.49. Now all we need is about 60 more SNES games, N64 games and other consoles and the VC will be half decent!
@johndevine my guess is £49.99 for MK8 on the eshop but then again, they might be packing a Wheel with the retail version which should make it dearer than digital..... (and there's a limited edition figurine version https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbUcAIEfA6M ). It's £40 on Amazon.
I'm tempted to buy this classic gem, but I don't think I'll make use of the discount. Mario Kart 8 is a game that must be spinning around in my disc drive. Physical 4 Life, Baby.
I will take this deal if it comes to this side of the ocean. Was planning on going digital for MK8 anyway.....basically getting MK or free
Any preorder bonuses for NA? Still haven't preordered my copy because I am basically waiting for something like this for NA :/
This is the first difficult decision I've had in terms of digital or physical....
Even though i live in the US, i have a question, for those that can get the game at a reduced price if having it already owned on the original Wii VC, can we still get the discount?
That's a neat way of integrating their digital offers.
I'll be buying Mario Kart 8, but I'm not sure if it'll be digital or physical yet. Might pay off to always have it handy on the system, when it's all several of my friends play.
I don't give 2 flying poops about Mario Kart so I won't be getting MK8... But to those that do you would be better off nabbing the D4L version because physical will no doubt have a unimpressive framerate and choke trying to run on that slow disc drive
I'll be repurchasing Mario Kart no matter what offers they had. I won't download Mario Kart 8 though as I have it pre-ordered atm for £35, so the discount won't justify it.
On the note of Mario Kart 8 on the Nintendo Website, has anyone else noticed that it's down for just 2players? Surely that should be 5???
Wish they would integrate online 8 man multiplayer into this. Would be relatively cheap to produce and ratings would go through the roof. How hard could it be to deliver a bit of fan service.
Still the best Mario Kart game. I wish they'd release/remake it with 4player split-screen and online for those who like online play. So much fun, and so many good memories....good times...
Awwwwww yeah...
@MAB you're confusing Nintendo with 3rd parties. The disc versions of 1st party games make your Wii U sing and load faster than the glorified SD card of internal memory or the archaic magnetic drives that some cave people use.
Rounded-edge discs for life!
Wonder when America is getting this...
I was elated beyond belief when I read the headline.....then reality slowly sunk in when I learned this was UK promotion only.
@Gold 2015.
I'll stick to the physical copy.
That is tempting, since Mario Kart 8 is a game that will not be resold. I hope that the US branch of Nintendo does something similar.
I wonder if NA will be getting this.... and if we are and they ut it on the Wii U VC, if you can still take advantage of it if you pay $1.50 because you have it on the Wii...
@WaveBoy I sort of disagree. There was more skill to the general driving but to get all golds in SMK required massive luck because the AI could use their specific weapons at will throughout an entire race. You could be driving a perfect race but still be overtaken by an invincible Luigi or Mario. In Mario Kart Wii the items can be ridiculous but learning the tracks really well makes it so the other driver's items barely matter. The hardest thing about getting a 9999 score on MKW was avoiding cheaters and -400 point disconnects!
YES!! This is my favourite version and also has the best soundtrack of all Mario kart games in my opinion. Each character had their own victory theme - something that is missing from the others. Me and my older brother played this game all the time on the SNES, along with Killer Instinct and Final Fight 2. Those were the good old days! That console brought so many wonderful memories sniff
@WaveBoy They did include Shinobi (Course and Joe Musashi) at least on the PC version I have - runs at 1080p/60fps (No upscaling or other nonsense native plugged into a plasma - 2 frames input lag). At least there is a point in playing it as well. Just the Race of Ages track is better that anything there has ever been in Mario Kart.
The best Mario Kart of all!
Edit: imo
Bit pricey but this is imo still the best MK so far, I still have the cart for my snes.
@MAB Until Nintendo develops a borrowing system similar to Steam, I'll refrain from purchasing their games in digital form. I have friends already with a Wii U and we like to be able to borrow games from one another.
It may sounds good at first, then you realize that the digital version of MK8 costs as the retail one, or even more thanks to shops sales...
When it's about online, one step forward and two steps back.
sooo, I get a discount because I had it on my wii and transfered, I get money back because of the ddp promotion, AND I get a discount off the game, which will get me MORE money back? Nintendo I love you
@Marioman64 Depends whether the overall saving is more than the difference between physical copy or the price of the code direct from game.co.uk or wherever else sells the codes. May well be worthless.
Love it. Getting it.
I'd buy it if I could get cross-platform play with my 3DS.
Great to see the game come to vc, great to see Nintendo trying to do some kind of deal......but I like the look of the bullet Bill t shirt and shell bundle on the official website!!!
Speaking of bundles ......wouldn't it be nice if they provided vc bundles like steam. Ie, 5 games for a set fee or the nes remix bundle or even some kind of season pass that got you a game a month for a year for instance.
Reggie!!!!!
This would be a easy decision, getting Super Mario Kart for essentially free with MK8, if it wasn't for Nintendo's extrotionate eShop prices for retail releases. Why should I buy a digital version of the game for £10 more than Amazon is selling? (assuming MK8 follows the trend of £49.99 for retail games)
@ROBLOGNICK If you are hoping in cross-buy, you'll be forever disappointed by Nintendo.
@andreoni79 That's exactly what I'm hoping for. They'll do it, you mark my words. But it'll be a couple of years before we see it more than likely.
Woopty doo. More VC games that were already released on Wii and therefore already playable from Wii U. Nintendo is truly out of ideas.
£1.49 for me
Yep, I've said it before and I'll say it again. You Euro gamers get a lot of cool stuff.
@Dark-Link73 You mean the blue spiky shell for only £20 ($ 34 - € 24) when we already pay a new game £ 39 ($ 70 - € 50)...
Cool deal, hope it works for the Wii VC upgrades!
At last a decent title on the VC. Don't stop there Nintendo, why not make this the start of a VC revival!
It IS tempting to have Mario Kart 8 digitally for a fast spin whenever I want. :/
To be honest, as good as the original was, 64 held the most memories for me, with the 4 player multiplayer, and some of the best Battle Mode Action. I really wish they'd re-introduce the Bob Omb Karts back into Battle Mode, as there was nothing more fun than having to avoid opponents And the revenge wanting defeated. I wish it was at least available as an option or mode of play…
Sure it also had probably one of the worst versions of Rainbow Road, but it is still the version I played the most.
@andreoni79 Along with a Billy Bullet T-Shirt and a keychain. Yep! That's the one! OR you get this discount I'd you prefer to DL. OR you get a MK8 Wii Wheel. You guys get plenty of promos from which to choose.
So far here in NA all we might get is blown away by the blue shell, followed by being hit by a red shell, then getting run over by Billy Bullet and finally getting dumped in the lava from being pushed by somebody using Browser. Yes Sir! (I hated when that would happen to me, and it happened rather often too, lol)
Awesome! I've been waiting for Super Mario Kart to come to Wii U virtual console for ages! It's the one Mario Kart I haven't completed in either its SNES or GBA forms. The d-pad just really didn't do it for me. So I'm glad that I'll be able to play it with an analog stick & it'll give me a discount on a download of Mario Kart 8 if I choose to go that route. Awesome!
Never been fan of this version of Mario Kart. N64 is still the top for me along the gamecube version.
@speedyboris 2016
If only they would put on Gamecube games. Double Dash with gamepad play would be awesome.
@Dark-Link73 Most of the so called "European" promos are UK only, and living in Italy I'm in your same situation; and btw these "promos" are always very expensive... lol, quite strange for being a promo! I'm sure US don't get everything, but every time I think at Bravely Default (US collector edition cheaper than the EU regular edition!) or SMT IV, I simply go mad.
@Dark-Link73 Europe gets useless junk. US gets free games that otherwise would have to be paid for.
If I play this I want to play the PAL version running at 60hz otherwise it feels too slow. (That is how I used to play it). I never realised it was PAL optimised until later.
I'll probably get SMK via Wii upgrade but it's very likely that SMK plus a physical copy of MK8 will be cheaper so as much as I'd like to support initiatives like this, I won't be paying a rip-off price on the eshop
Hey look! Another Virtual Console games North America won't get on the Wii U any time soon!
I have to say that I'm terribly disappointed with Nintendo of America. I don't know what Reggie is doing, but this is ludicrous.
However, we can't jump the gun and say that we aren't getting this as well....or even the LE edition of MK8. Still from what history has told us, US doesn't get everything EU got. They (EU) have the superior entity of Nintendo while NoA lags behind as always. Still no SMB3 (yeah I know some of you are tired of us complaining....trust that we're tired of complaining) yet EU has it. It's no wonder the Wii U and such is struggling in America.
So cool the first mario kart i had so much fun with this with my friend back in the snes days i hope they do mario kart64 soon as well to get the hype really going.
@Rafie The Wii U stills struggles much more in Europe despite these kind of actions by NoE. US is by far the best market for Nintendo. But, I feel Reggie ought to get the boot sooner or later.
This will be my first VC download since i bought the wii u a year ago ..
Nintendo gives a discount on the eshop then announces a limited edition for physical copies. Which one to get?
A decent offer. I might've been tempted but I already have the Super Nintendo cart, so no real advantage in having a digital copy just to get a small discount on MK8.
Still have the SNES cart of Mario Kart hopefully they will release Mario Kart 64 next month.
This is a good offer for those that had the Wii VC version, allowing them to take advantage of the VC discount to make the eShop MK8 cost less to purchase.
Sold. On both counts. Day one.
Digital is the way
Hell no! The Wii u hard drive is simply to small & I want that MK bundle with the cool swag!
@theberrage
Lol, Ignorance is in the air tonight
@EmpoleTRON lol so are meaningless comments apparently. thanks for shining your genius upon us.
I hope it's not too long until it arrives in North America.
@WiiLovePeace The Classic Controller and Classic Controller Pro for Wii both have analog control sticks.
To have both versions, 50hz and 60hz, has its appeal…
Hmm, isn't it so that when you have the wii vc version and buy the wiiu vc version of the game you get it for less and can keep the wii version? What if I don't have the wii version but buy the wiiu version first? Can I get the wii version for a discount as well? If not, the order of the purchases matters...
Still my favorite of all Mario Karts.
I'm not interested in buying MK8 as a download for any price, but the discount is a really nice idea. I was always reluctant to buy for instance Super Mario Kart when I have Mario Kart Wii anyway, the latter making the first somewhat redundant apart from a short joy of retro feeling (unless of course one loves the game for any reasons, but for me it was just a matter of game historical interest). But this here is a very nice way of giving people something practically for free which otherwise they may not really need (same with Dr. Luigi and the NES Dr. Mario)
Eh, where does North America stand in all this? No Mario Kart SNES for us, no limited edition release for us... what's going on? I want the blue spiky shell thingy-mabob too ya know?!!
@StarDust4Ever Those tears are just. This is extremely saddening. I don't understand why Nintendo is following this path. All they are doing is angering the loyal fanbase.
@Blizzaga Yeah I know, but I haven't bought it on Wii. Been waiting for it to come to Australia on Wii U since I found the Japanese Super Mario Kart community last year. Also just relaying my experiences playing it on SNES & GBA. Though I'll probably have to use d-pad for accuracy to get fast times, I'm excited to share them over Miiverse. Another thing Wii doesn't do (properly) is Off-TV play. I find it awesome for virtual console games. Oh & it's also $1.60 cheaper on Wii U then on Wii iirc.
The original and the best.
@NateLinhart Yes, and I urge you and anyone else in NA region, please add Super Mario Bros 3 to your wishlist in the eShop, to let Nintendo know there is demand for it. There's still a thread of hope that Nintendo will take notice...
Instant download for me Nintendo, Thank You.
Shoulda been on the VC within the first week or 2. Kinda sad that the Wii U getting SMK is headline news imo, but i guess in the case of Wii U any news is headline news.
@JaxonH That's why I'm a little more pissed at Reggie and the rest of NoA. They barely localize anything for the U.S. and barely lands us any great limited edition offers or trinkets like EU and Japan gets. It's downright dumb. For the first time since Mario Kart: Double Dash (when I started paying for my own games as an adult), I didn't rush to the GS to preorder because I so BADLY want that wretched Blue Shell trophy that sometimes impedes my leads. sigh
@Rafie
In all fairness, let's wait and see what happens. Many times NoA does offer limited editions, they just don't announce them until after the other regions. I'm actually fairly confident we'll be getting a similar announcement. I'd be shocked if we didn't.
But, in the rare event that we DON'T get a similar announcement, eBay it is for me!
@JaxonH Well my friend your faith in NoA is much stronger than mines at the moment. I'll be patient though.
However, you have to admit that NoA drops the ball a lot. Like we still don't have SMB3. There's virtually no reason why we don't have that game, but the U.K. has it. Our content laws are much more lenient than theirs (EU). Well that's another conversation for another day I suppose.
I can't go to eBay and pay outrageous prices. Even for one of my favorite franchises. Reggie better work to get us that limited edition one above, or something in equal value.
Sounds like a good deal. I wish na had this offer,as I will purchase this anyway.
@Rafie
I feel you on SMB3. I just don't spend a lot of time pointing fingers when something happens like that because, well, I'm usually too busy being satisfied with great games. I want SMB3 on Wii U VC too. I'm not happy about it being MIA either. But, it's just not that big a deal to me I guess. I've played the game a dozen times, I own it on my Wii, and if I buy it on Wii U it's probably just going to be for the sake of owning it. But yes, I hear you.
They should release a LE in NA. I don't see why they wouldn't. The game is already sold out on Amazon, and it's still 3 months prior to release. We'll see I guess. I prefer to not pay eBay prices, but to me money is just money. Can always make more.
Without a doubt the best game to come to wiiu's awful vc since earthbound. I will be getting mario kart for the snes,but it will still be a physical retail release for mk8
@JaxonH You have a good attitude man. You don't have the entitled demeanor that most gamers have. I respect that. I guess my disdain for NoA is harsh because this has been going on for years now. People in America are feeling a bit short because NoE is better with how they treat their consumers instead of it being equal across the board. Sony has the same problem. Before a few months ago, the Plus updates on the EU side was completely murdering the US's. The complaints were overwhelming...and rightfully so.
Still if gamers had your attitude and just played the games, they wouldn't have the time to complain. Unfortunately that doesn't stop the comparisons though.
@Rafie
Thanks man, just in it for the fun ya know! Like, ya sometimes I do wish we'd get the same bundles- I had really wanted a Fire Emblem 3DS, and only EU got the XL. But all in all, I can't complain. I mean, we're getting Sonic Boom which is NA only, right? That's worth many bundles if you ask me
Is this a UK promotion only or will we get this on other EU countries too?
If they do something similar in the US, I'm game. I got SMK from club nintendo on my Wii for free, so I'd pay the $1.50 to upgrade and get a discount on MK8. I couldn't really get into SMK - too dated for me, and I don't really have nostalgia for it, but I will be getting MK8 pretty much immediately, so it's worth it.
@JaxonH Sonic Boom will also be released in Europe and Oceania, dude. When they talk about appealing to western audiences it's pretty much everyone in the world but Asia and Africa.
And as far as European gamers go, historically Europe was always getting the short end of the stick. We never got Super Mario RPG and Earthbound on SNES, we got the N64 on 1997, the GameCube on 2002, we played the slower-paced 50 Hz versions of everything on every console up to the Dreamcast... so maybe it's fate delivering overdue retribution?
Never played this gonna download it soon as!
@Samurai_Goroh
Um, ok?.Glad you're getting Sonic Boom. Sound like you've got a chip on your shoulder about this whole region thing? I don't care man, I don't keep tabs on what other regions get. Makes no difference to me. Sure, sometimes I hear about a cool item or bundle NA isn't getting, but it's nothing I get bent out of shape over.
Retribution? Hardly. Retribution implies your misfortunes were caused by those in another region, when in all actuality, what happens in other regions has nothing to do with your region's administration deciding what comes to you. If anyone is upset about "unequality", I would wager they're spending way too much time coveting their neighbors, instead of being thankful for what they do get.
@JaxonH I'm not hating on US gamers, mind you. All is cool, bro. I'm just saying, you people complain because of some limited editions you don't get, while we were deprived of masterpieces like Earthbound. Isn't that a little bit worse? Now, were being treated a little bit better by NoE, and that was overdue. NA hasn't been missing out on any games and that what matter's most. Even Xenoblade,The Last Story and Pandora's Tower were still released over there, you just had to wait a bit longer. Meanwhile, I never got ExciteBots on Wii, which is still fairly recent. It's not a matter of coveting my neighbours, it was a game announced for a global audience that I legitimately expected to see released in PAL regions.
@Samurai_Goroh
Gotchya. I'm not one of those guys- I never complain or envy other regions. If anything, I'm happy for you guys when you get something we don't. I certainly don't keep tabs on who's gotten more of what. Whatever goes on in your region is none of my business, at least that's the way I see it. If I see something cool (like the FE Awakening XL) I might say to myself "Wow, I really wish they would have brought that here" but that's about the full extent of it.
