Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze may be delayed to early 2014 — February in North America — but with that new release window it looks set to be the first major Wii U title of the new year. Appearing on the latest episode of GT.TV, Nintendo of America's Bill Trinen introduced some new footage and features of the Retro Studios title, and it certainly looks positive.
First up is Jelly Jamboree, a new stage that sees DK and his buddy of choice bouncing around throughout, similar to some moments from the previous entry in the revived franchise. Perhaps more interesting was the reveal of 'Kong Pow', a new move that allows you to obliterate every enemy on screen and turn them into items. Collecting 100 bananas fills a meter, and in multiplayer both players have to co-ordinate a button press to successfully pull off the move — it'll also be available in single player. The items that appear from Kong Pow vary depending on the buddy character in play, which in the case of Dixie is a gold heart; each of these allows an extra hit before the heart goes back to its standard red colour.
The footage shown is certainly worth a look, especially as coverage of Tropical Freeze has been on the backburner since its delay. There are some attractive environments on show, including interesting shots of mine-kart rides from an alternative angle — which bring to mind on-rails sequences from Sonic Lost World — and some attractive looking camera angle shifts. Bill Trinen also states, at one point, that there'll be six islands in the game.
The Tropical Freeze footage can be found initially at the five minute marker, and again at 11 minutes. Are you looking forward to this one next year?

I am REALLY expecting to see some of my favorite features from the SNES series brought back, but at this point I'm getting kind of worried. The absolute top of my wishlist is a larger selection of animal buddies, and yet we haven't even seen Rambi thus far.
Either way, this is by far my most anticipated title of the near future. It's still my favorite sidescrolling series of all time.
Reggie is right! Software will sell hardware. He's also right about the 3 games he mentioned Mario 3D World, MK 8, and Smash U have a HUGE install base. All 3 games have fans that has more of a "cult" following. Not to offend anyone by saying that or using that word. Most definitely those other 2...MK8 and Smash U will push the hardware, GUARANTEED!!
Can't wait for this game.
eh probably skip this game i wish they would add those animal changing forms like they had in the SNES like the fish,spider etc those were interesting
So how many games are actually announced for 2014 on Wii u???? Other than this ,mk8, smash bros,x and bayonetta 2......irs gonna be a tragic year if there aren't announcement s soon on future games, I'm getting really worried that theres gonna be a second drought in 2014 after q1!!!!
Oh god....it shows a scene where DK and Dixie get stuck in a pile of jelly cubes and an on screen prompt appears showing the player needs to wave the wiimote and nunchuk to break free!!
PLEASE let us play this with the Wii-U Pro Controller without having to unnecessarily wave a wiimote around!! It's what made me give up on the Wii version, and would be a deal breaker for me if this game requires the wiimote.
I hope we're able to play this game traditional style with the gamepad controls. My biggest gripe with the first DKCR was the waggle controls.
@FutureAlphaMale Just play with the Gamepad...
This looks like a lot of fun. This will be one of my first games for the system, most likely, unless they manage to somehow screw it up, which I doubt will happen.
@XneroX
Even worse!
No new character annouced? I was expecting that the 4th chatacter would be annouced
Hopefully we will get a December/January Direct Wii U focused (like the one in January) mentioning this and many more stuff!!

I hope the pro controller is an option
It's certainly on my wishlist for next year.
I had no idea this game is directed by a female director. I feel like that's still a rarity in games.
@ricklongo Thing I like about it is there been a junk game in the series and the latest one I think is the best and the hardest. (As long as they keep the difficulty similar to last time I cannot see how I could not like this) .
Software sells hardware, but marketing sells both, Reggie x_x
so i notice the dont have the letter "U" in this game like most do, maybe this means they have plans to port it to the 3ds like they did the first one, i imagine all the hard work was done the first time, so it sholdnt be unreasonable a second.
....I hate this media player, won't let me skip past 5 minutes...won't even let me watch more than 5 minutes. :/
I love how Nintendo drip-feeds us new information on it's games. Every time they show us new clips it almost always builds my hype. I wanted this game from the start, but seeing this makes me want it even more. I never played DKR on Wii, but I liked it on the 3DS, Tropical Freeze looks so much better though. Looking forward to this.
DKCR is may favorite game on the Wii. Pretty excited about this one.
Dammit Nintendo I was really looking forward to playing this over the Xmas break!
@Rafie Agreed. Even if SM3DW doesn't greatly improve sales, now there are multiple critically acclaimed games worthy of a purchase on Wii U. When DKCTF comes out and people really want that game, they now say something along the lines of "Well, I could get SM3DW and Pikmin 3 as well", which gives them more initiative the purchase the console. It'll be the same when Mario Kart 8 is released. People will then have SM3DW, Pikmin 3, DCKTF, TW101, WW HD, etc... to think about on top of the new content. It's great to see, and hopefully the trend continues and sales pick up.
Although alot of people are excited for this title, I feel like this game shouldnt have been Retros next game. I felt like it should have been Metroid which would have drove some people to buy the game and Wii U. This game alot of people look at and say, "It looks great but i am not goin to buy it on day one". I just dont feel like its a wanted game at this time.
"Kong Pow" reminds me of "HULK SMASH!"
Really excited for this game, probably going to pre-order it. I know a lot of people said it didn't look that great when we first saw footage of the game, but I think it looks fine. I love the texture of DK's fur in that screenshot.
On the Wii you could plug in the classic cont to the wii remote to those who complained about the controls...
@ricklongo
I'm missing Squitter, the best animal buddy ever in any game!
@Luffymcduck Couldn't agree more, mate. He's definitely my favorite animal buddy in the entire series.
Every "animal barrel" stage in Diddy's Kong Quest was awesome, but the Squitter one was just on a whole other level. To top that off, it also featured one of the best pieces of music to ever grace a video game. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5IUXyzqrZsw
@Prof_Elvin_Gadd Problem is the games are not coming out at a fast enough rate and up to now nearly all of them have been really easy. (Playing an hour a day from release and you would be stuck for something to play by now). I want more than I can get through at least for a while when I get a system. (I got my 3DS XL and a whim about this time last year and regretted it as it is only just getting to the point where there is enough).
If they put some stuff that is really good / difficult and long onto the VC it would be ok. (Makes no difference to a company with the amount of cash Nintendo has whether people buy now or in a years time).
(Small studios are different but there is nothing none ported I have seen on the Wii U I am bothered about).
@FutureAlphaMale How is playing with the gamepad worse? There will likely be button presses instead
I hope there's a lot more new in this game than what we've seen so far. Absolutely everything would've fit right in with the original game =/ A by-the-numbers sequel to a great game might still be a good buy, but I'd be lying if I didn't say I expect more from Retro.
@n057828
Nope. The only options were wiimote or wiimote + nunchuck. The gimmicky motion controls were a requirement.
So far we have seen around 8 stages and a boss fight. I hope there is still plenty more to discover in the finished game. I am interested to know how each island is layed out and how you get between each one, perhaps Funky's flights will return?
As other people have said hopefully there will be some animal buddies, perhaps Enguarde will return for the underwater stages?
How many levels do people think there will be in the game?
For whatever reason, Kong Pow reminds me of True Crime: Streets of LA.
Anyway, bring back Rambi, Enguarde, Expresso and Squawks!
@ricklongo
Aah, Forest Interlude. One of the reasons I´m so hyped for this game is the fact that we get a new soundtrack from Dave Wise. I had already given up hope, that he would make any more musics for Nintendo games, before they revealed this info during E3. 2014 is going to be awesome.
Wow, I remember MK8 looking good at E3, but, just, wow. I can't believe how sexy that game looks.
