Everyone may be getting excited about the impending release of Sonic Lost World on Wii U and 3DS, but that doesn't mean that Sega has forgotten about its past classics — the company is releasing Sonic Generations on the 3DS eShop next Thursday.
There's no word on a price as yet, but it's good to see that one of Sonic's better outings is getting a new lease of life.

Sega will have to price this reasonably, as the age of the title means that pre-owned copies of the retail version are quite cheap these days. Will a digital release tempt you to make a purchase if you haven't played this already? Let us know by posting a comment.

still hoping for a WiiU port of the console version
Already have it retail, but if i didnt id consider getting it on eshop. Downloading retail games is a lot more cheap and actually usuable since the wii u and 3ds came around imo
Wasn't the 3DS version a bad port? If that's the case, I don't care about the price, I won't spend a cent on it.
Nah, the 3DS version was a completely different game and very good, if short (but very replayable).
It'll be 20$/€. Still too steep for me though. 15 and I would consider.
I didn't like the level design of this one. At any rate I'm saving my rings for Lost World!
@DarkCoolEdge nah it wasn't a bad port and I must say I enjoyed the 3ds version more..... Same story but no motion cut scenes. it was sonic rush style and it had some levels and bosses the ps3/360 didn't have (mushroom hill which looked amazing/ the boss bio lizard from SA2B) and a few other very enjoyable classic stages / and bosses that I won't say for those planning to buy the game. It also featured online mode which imo made the game very replayable vs the console versions which only had challenge mode which the 3ds version has too so yea they were very different in terms of levels, challanges, bosses music and the fact that the 3ds version has online mode ^_^
Classics? You’ve gotta be kidding. The 3DS version of Generations is terri– hmm, well, no, it’s just thoroughly mediocre.( I was comparing it to the nearly-flawless Sonic Rush & the almost-as-good Sonic Rush Adventure.)
@DarkCoolEdge Not a port, an original game, just not a very good one.
I played the console versions and loved it the only way I'll buy this is if it's 15 or less... Maybe
I was tempted to buy it in 2011 when first released but resisted the temptation.
Now, I'm just hoping Sega releases it's 3D classics in the NA eShop. I'd rather wait and pick up the original Mega Drive/Genesis 3D version of Sonic the Hedgehog.
And I'm planning to get rid of my retail copy. I just don't think the 3DS version is as good as its console cousin. And not because of graphics either- the 3DS version is too short, the stages they picked aren't nearly as good as the console ones, and at least half of the missions play that godforsaken "Super Sonic Racing" song from Sonic R.
So, the only Sonic game I'm downloading on my 3DS now would be the 3D Classics version of Sonic 1.
If Sega is smart, $10 is the highest they go..... IMO
I don't care what they charge, I'm just happy with somebody taking a 2 year old retail game and making it available digitally.
I can think of another game - it's initials are XC - that came out that same year which I would gladly pay the full retail price for a digital version now. And then I would pay another $1.50 to make it Wii Uable.
I swear I read the title as "Sonic Lost World" rather than "Sonic Generations". Now I'm disappointed.
At least I now have hope that Rhythm Thief will come to the eShop. I can't find a boxed version of that anywhere.
Sonic Generation is a great 3DS game, but it was already overpriced when it came out. Took me less then 3 hours for complete it; I normally hold nothing against short games, but that was ridicoulus for a full price retail title DX
Digital distribuition at a very low price, I always thought that was a better fit for this title, it would make it a must buy ^^ Hope Sega won't be too greedy >_>
Think my favourite Sonic game I have played recently is Sonic CD on my Xperia Play. (I had never played it before and the port was flawless. Xperia Play has physical controls so that wasn't an issue. Rubbish Phone but some of the games that support the physical controls are great).
I REALLY hope Sega will port the console version to the Wii U. I loved the 3DS version, but I still want to try the other version.
@allav866
I hope they do an HD Collection later in the Wii U's life that has Sonic 4, Sonic Colors, and Sonic Generations.
Huzzah! I finally get a chance to make use of the Save Data Transfer Tool! Not sure I really want to buy a digital copy Sonic Generations for too steep a price considering I don't get a whole lotta use out of it, but it'll be nice to be able to keep around one of the titles I'm still StreetPassing with, and to be able to return the cartridge to free up that space on the back of my 3DS.
Nice. I wanted to get this game, but right before I was going to get it, my Xbox 360 got the "red ring of death". So, I can only go with the 3DS version.
I planned on getting it for 3DS, but never got around to doing so...
I'll just get a used copy though, unless the price for download is cheaper. (I'm assuming it will be $20 on e-shop)
Sega please put Rhythm Theif on eShop!
Dug it on PS3 although supposedly the 3DS version is good but not great. Not that the PS3 version was perfect either...
The game certainly gives me grounds to be excited about Lost Worlds, though!
I'd like to have this game again, but all of the levels are just not fun. Radical Highway, possibly my favorite Sonic level ever, is for sure my most hated level in this game.
I'd consider getting this if the price is reasonable compared to what it is going for on various online retailers.
Hopefully this breaths some new life into the online mode. There aren't many people playing this as there used to be.
@MrSRArter I can see Colora getting a remake in HD, but the others were already HD. I see the chances very slim they will port 4 and Generations.
$15 or bust.
Also, just to re-iterate: "Sega please put Rhythm Theif on eShop!"
You'd think a series like Sonic would breathe and bleed portable but the only handheld title I've enjoyed is Advance 2 (I haven't played Colors yet though and there's also my Sonic Classic Collection which doesn't exactly count). I really liked Generations on PS3 (which by unfortunate circumstances I no longer have) but I'd much rather have it on Wii U so I'll wait for that port.
The 3DS version of Generations is really not one of Sonics "better" outings, but ok.
This was a good game, but most people can find it easily now with or without the eshop, now if Sega was smart they'd put Rhythm Thief on and it would sell like crazy since no one can find it.
