The Nintendo Network ID system for Wii U may not be exactly what everyone wants, but it's a step in the right direction — and it could be making its way to the 3DS before the year is out.
According to Nintendo Force's Emily Rogers, we'll be hearing some news regarding this within the next six months — along with long-rumoured Hulu support, presumably limited to North America.

Possible benefits could include getting discounts for Virtual Console games purchased on both systems, or perhaps we may even see Nintendo finally upgrade the ID system to the point where you can re-download them to another console, should your original system become lost or stolen.
What are your thoughts about Nintendo Network ID coming to the 3DS? Is it something you're looking forward to, or do you not see the need right now? Post a comment to tell us what you think.

no, you're not. as per our rules, 'first' type nonsense posts are not allowed. neither is profanity (even if mispelled). please stop with both. k8smum
Having all of your games tied to a single account would be the best thing Nintendo has ever done.
My question would be could I use my Wii U NNID on my 3DS?
And that would be Baby_Sickle (shameless plug).
I hope this is true, maybe then I will DL more retail games.
I hope it's true. We will probably hear more tomorrow!
Interesting! What is Hulu?
An account would make me reconsider downloads, but not if Nintendo follows Microsoft's lead with their xbox one fiasco. This is unlikely because the 3DS is already an established system. I worry about future consoles though.
About flippin' time.
@Sakura http://hulu.com
id's great, but hulu ? come on most people cant even use it, why not youtube? a service that more than just americans can use
@kianworld "Sorry, currently our video library can only be watched from within the United States"
for a system that is trying to appeal to international audiences hulu seems like a bad idea
@kianworld Thanks! TV on a 3DS though? Presumably it would need an internet connection. I have that in my house, but I also have a TV! I suppose you could maybe download for watching elsewhere? Will have to wait and see.
YEEEESSSS! Please let this not be a rumor and be actual facts! That is one of the reasons I still have a little doubt when it comes to going crazy downloading games on my 3ds or wii u, especially my 3ds because if I accidentally lost it or It gets stolen then all the content I downloaded would be lost and would not be able to re-download unless you re-purchase
we regularly use netflix and amazon prime. i tried hulu and didn't care for it.
i really hope the rumour about the ID system is accurate. i hate that accounts are tied to hardware.
Lets just say if they do, I'll be one step closer to wanting to download my retail games.
I want this and MiiVerse on my 3DS
Does this mean I can get 3DS games with an 8% discount?! That would be awesome!
Well Hulu is no good for me since we don't have it here (I think) but the ID is what I am happy to hear.
finally. miiverse integration is needed as well
Would love to see the same level of account connectivity between my Wii U and 3DS as I have between my PS3 and Vita. Cross Play and Cross Buy are fantastic, and i have no problem paying for a premium service when the one subscription covers both systems (PS+).
If the WiiU gets an account system whereby transferring my Wii downloads will mean I can never lose them if my system dies, then that would be enough for me to get a WiiU. With four or five hundred dollars of classic games purchased on my Wii, it's a pretty big deal for me.
A linked account system between Nintendo devices MIGHT just bring them into the second decade of the 21st century. Let's also hope they decide to redesign their website.
heck yea im looking forward to it! i hope nintendo does it
People are assuming that a unification of accounts would automatically lead into a discount if you bought a game on one virtual shop when it was on the other.
I'm thinking people shouldn't hope for that, so that they won't be mad if it doesn't turn out to be a thing.
Well it's about damn time Nintendo caught up w/ the other companies w/ a unified network ID. You shouldn't have to pay again for downloaded games you've already paid for in the past just because your system gets stolen or broken.
Maybe if we linked our NNI to our CN accounts we could verify our purchases that way? Either way, exciting news. Hope it is true.
"...or do you not see the need right now?" I see a big need for an account system. I'm not 1/2 as d/l happy on 3ds e-Shop, as I could be. This is b/c of the constant danger of loss of investment in my 3ds digital library.
@Buduski: This is why I support carts when I can. I'll get d/ls, but if I can get the game on a cart instead, then absolutely I will. I prefer hard/physical media. Plus, as you said, I would be more open-wallet on the e-Shop, should my purchases not be in danger of being lost forever, should anything happen to my 3ds.
@daveh30: I personally wouldn't want to pay for a service that should be something part of a basic package. I also mostly doubt cross-platform-play will happen, though it could.
@smashbrolink: It could happen, though I doubt it would.
@KnightRider666: I will say, while an account system not tied to the console/handheld itself is necessary, a co. could argue that it's difficult to tell when someone has legitimately lost, or had their system stolen.
@Ralizah: Nintendo could do it, but I have a feeling they'd somewhat play the "it's a not secure method" card.
They could really impress if they could get free Hulu on the 3DS, every other device requires Hulu Plus.
The network id really needs a network.
@Capt_N: Stolen or lost system isn't the issue. It's being able to redownload what you already paid for to another system is. I can do this with any Sony system, and I'm told you can do the same w/ any microsoft system. As I said before, it's time for Nintendo to get with the times and stop inconviencing their customers by lagging behind.
What the 3DS is youtube, not Netflix or Hulu, or Nintendo Video,,, I really would sleep better if my 3DS retail games could be redownloaded in case my system is lost or broken.... don't care about the ID thing if it doesn't bring that feature with it
A unified account system will lead to more digital sales, which have much higher profit margins. This should be a top priority for Nintendo.
This would certainly push me on-board to purchasing more games digitally, so far I do have quite a bit of eshop games, but if something like this happens I'd be much more willing to purchase more because of the additional security it offers, such as if my 3DS was stolen (Which I highly doubt will ever happen) I could always pick up another one, log into my account and re-download all of the games I had purchased.
Hulu was announced wayy back for 3DS in 2011-_-. Its not fair that it came to Wii and not 3DS.
This may be epic if all goes well! (fingers and toes crossed)..
I really want account systems for Wii U and 3DS just like Sony has. I have a whole LOT of 3DS games which I'd hate to lose if something ever happened to my 3DS, and having just gotten a 1tb HDD for my Wii U, I expect to go digital a lot so internet-tied accounts would be much appreciated.
About time they have NN ID on 3DS, can't wait! It's a great first step for them, but now they need to have your downloads connected to the accounts, just like PSN and XBL, if they FINALLY do that, Nintendo will have alot more people downloading games. I haven't downloaded one single game off eShop because of this, and it's bumming me out cause there is alot of great games on there.
To Nintendo Life staff: Hulu isn't available in Canada, so it would just America on this one
Great use I have both Hulu and netflix so this is good.
Good first step.
Love the idea of having all my friend and games together regardless of what system im using if is a Wii U or a 3DS!!!
I wish this came sooner as my 3DS broke today and now have lost my ambassador program along with 10 purchased games. I can say one thing, until they make it where you have an account I will not spend another dime on VC games.
I'm really hoping that this account system comes true. I love Nintendo, but they should really change their "games tied to system" attitude.
I couldn't care less about Hulu, but I really hope the Nintendo ID and Nintendo Network for 3DS is true. If they allowed one to connect two or three 3DS' to the same account, that'd be even better for someone like me who has the Reggie version and the XL version, and plans on getting at least a few more LE models in the future.
I really hope to see that you can download the same game on multiple consoles. That would definately be good with me having three 3ds systems
better later than never.. this is brilliant news!!!
The NNID for 3DS is a really good idea...Hulu on 3DS,Though? I do not really care for Hulu. I mean,I had to pay for Hulu and there were Advertisements while I was watching something on Hulu. Not worth it.
I wouldn't hold your breath on the unified accounts. I just spent a frustrating 30 minutes on the phone with Nintendo trying to get Wii Games recovered (can see them on the account). Out of curiosity I asked about the WiiU and was informed that they are also locked to the console (along with your NintendoID which also locks to the console). They just happen to give you the tool to manage it if the system still works. No old console, no transfers, no refunds.
if miiverse never comes, i will be upset. i thought it was late 2012/ early 2013! anyways, i hope i can keep same ID as my wii u one (luigiboss73) for my flame red 3DS. also cross play and sync scores from wii u and 3DS for smash bros 4 hopefully. (yeah that was off topic.)
I wouldn't mind. It's a slow creep to a truly happy system, but a creep nonetheless.
As long as it means that all my games are tied to my account and not my system then it's fantastic. If that's not the case, then it's meaningless.
Sulu? There's a new Star Trek series?!
...oh, HULU! Is that like YouTube, or more like Netflix?
Anyway, I set up an NNID in the brief time I had a Wii U, so I'm wondering if I'm able to use that one on my 3DS and my eventual replacement Wii U.
If Nintendo ID comes to pass then I hope it'll cover all games previously bought on the eShop via Club Nintendo. I had a ton of retail titles on my old 3DS but they're gone now. If this were tied to eShop downloads then I could get them all back on my XL! It's a long shot, though. Knowing Nintendo, this probably won't happen.
Please let this be true. PLEASE Nintendo!!
If this is true I will be downloading more retail games on the eShop.
A proper account system would directly and substantially increase my eShop spending.
IF in fact they do offer the DDP like on the WiiU Deluxe Set, they BETTER retro the points!
I really hope they do this, and not screw things up in some ubserdly backwards way like tieing your account to the hardware instead.
I definitely wouldn't mind going digital for the games I don't really mind not having a box and manual for at least, as long as the physical copy isn't a better deal in some way.
This is good news. I think this is all leading up too Miiverse on 3DS. Hopefully, Nintendo takes this opportunity to finally fix the issue of software re-downloading. We already know they can transfer titles to a new system if they WANT too. Now's the time to give the consumer this option officially.
I just want to know that my games are linked to my account like on Steam.
Yes.
Please, please, please, Nintendo, make this true.
Game sharing across consoles linked by a common account is a must.
This needs doing so that my existing NNID for my wii u is used on my 3DS, I don't want 2 separate accounts,
@NintenU: Ah, thanks for the clarification.
MIIVERSE!
It would be amazing if they let you re-download purchased games across systems, but even if they just actually linked purchases to your Nintendo ID instead of each system it would be an improvement.
Miiverse, linking accounts would be much appreciated. But If I could just have the security in knowing that should something happen to my 3DS all my downloads would be transferable to another system then I would cry bitter tears of joy.
I won't get my hopes up, but a cross system, unified method would be nice. E-shop needs to be unified as well (perhaps it will be with NNID, but I dunno). Lots of potential... can't wait for more info.
They announced this already correct? No rumor here.
yeah, no rumor, even if not announced. look at the top right corner of the new pokemon games, legend of zelda link between worlds, and sonic lost world. nintendo network symbol is up there just like on the wii u.
