It seems our intuition was correct - we predicted yesterday that a new Skylanders release was in the offing, and Activision has dropped the bombshell by announcing Skylanders Swap Force, the next instalment in the million-selling series. It's coming to all major Nintendo platforms, too.
As the name suggests, the focus of this new range is the ability to swap components. Each character comes with a top half and a bottom half, allowing you to mix-and-match to create new characters. There's also a new portal to purchase. You can hear Activision's bank manager rubbing his hands as we speak.
There's no solid release date for the game, but later in 2013 is a safe bet. Vicarious Visions handling the Wii U edition, n-Space the 3DS version and Beenox the Wii version. Yes, the Wii is still alive and kicking.
Are you excited about this announcement, or has Disney Infinity stolen your attention? As ever, leaving a comment is the best way to let us know!

Oh boy, another Skylanders.
Wow, a NEW portal of power? Are they freakin' kidding? I already own 3.
As much as my 8 year old loves this - and my wife and I her having some fun playing at night after the kids are asleep - I think we're all done with Skylanders.
My biggest gripe - the medal/trophy/award in game - not a Sony Trophy - for having all 8 Giants characters, but 1 of them - Ninjini - doesn't even have a release date yet and the game has been out for 4 months. And 2 of the Giants just released last week and are very difficult to find. So they advertise a game with 8 giants but only sell 5.
Screw them.
yeah its gone way to far now...
New portal? Argh! I know its improved in interesting ways, but G'Lord! Only just got into Skylanders Ginats Wii u with my kids. This is interesting, but costly news.
This makes me sick. Three games in three years with a ludicrous number of figures to throw money at. This is corrupt in ways that I won't even start to explain.
"You can hear Activision's bank manager rubbing his hands as we speak" - too true, though he may do a couple of cartwheels around the office as well.
I'm in. The first two games have been some of the most co-op fun my wife and I have ever had and the amount of enjoyment we've gotten out of them has been WELL worth the money. We love collecting figures anyway and these have the added bonus of working with a really fun video game.
I just wish they didn't create artificial demand by limiting some figures (lookin' at you Thumpback) to the point where scalpers charge over 4 times their retail value on Amazon and eBay. Although, in a weird way, hunting them down at different stores can be kinda fun, and it's REALLY rewarding when you wander into a GameStop on a Tuesday afternoon and the two rarest Skylanders you've been hunting have literally just been hung on the wall.
Good times. I'm always up for more Skylanders.
I knew it to, but why don't they make it where you can play people online, oh wait, that way they can make more games and figures a year.

Very innovative! Disney Infinity still looks great, but I don't think it'll ever beat its sensei (Skylanders)!
Entertainment for a different kind of audience. Entertainment for a different kind of audience. Entertainment for a different kind of audience. Entertainment for a -
WHY, Activision, why must you suck the money of the poor consumers?
Someone pass me the noose, I'm fed up with this world.
I'm just glad I sold all my figures. I'm a completionist, so collecting the 100+ figures would have bankrupted me.
Skylanders is Activision's new Guitar Hero/Band Hero. Lets flood the market with as much as we can! Another company is getting in on the action (Disney) so we might as well make as much money as we can before the market is vastly over saturated and the public gets bored/ tired of the concept (again just like guitar hero) and we have to pack up shop.
Well I spent $0 for the giants starter pack (gift) and $91.52 so far for 8 figures, so Activision got my family jewels in more ways then one.
I WANT THIS for this platform 3ds xl
and wii
i hope they come out with a mii skylander for wii u wii and 3ds
It's nice to see the Wii still got games coming even if it's just Skylanders.
Interesting. But Disney Infinity still seems better!
@Shworange so true. Will it implode like the music one did?
Will Disney beat them at their game? It will be interesting to see.
So glad I don't have kids. But, if they ever did this with the TMNT licence then I would be in a weird, super-nerdy place under a mountain of toys.
I can't wait 'til this market becomes oversaturated and fails.
I recall one of the reasons Guitar/Band/DJ Hero games stopped because of expensive plastic peripherals.
Having said that, I think that, as a business, Nintendo is definitely missing out on an opportunity. A Skylanders-style Nintendo game would (while really p-ing me off) sell amazingly and make Ninty a shedload of money. (A lot of that money from me, who will hate himself but still buy every figure)
OMGOMGOMGOMGOMG MORE SKYLANDERS!!1(did that on purpose) Me and my friends have been forking money since 2011! We haven't even finished the first series! We're looking for Wham-shell, not to mention the Giants! Give us time to breathe Activision!!1
too many skylanders games, all too soon
I might get this if the reviews are good. I really enjoyed Skylanders and Giants, so this interests me.
Disney Infinity caught my attention more.
I am going to be one of those people I hate now. I mean people who only like games they were born with. I want the old Spyro baccckD:
Man...my head hurts after seeing these over and over and over and over again. It's almost ridiculous and has to stop!
And Acitivision has officially made Skylander's its latest street corner worker. Was interested in it at first, but now I just hope it goes the way of Guitar Hero/Rock Band/Tony Hawk.
Good to see the W getting big name games still. Long live the Wii!!
Wait... Richard Horvitz?! He deserves WAY better than this game! D:<
Hmm, interesting. Of course 256 possibilities means 16 new figures. Assuming this one will also be backwards and forwards compatable, I'll wait for this one before getting into the Skylanders series.
I'm the most interested in this Skylanders.I haven't bought the other ones but this sounds interesting enough.Best looking Skylanders to me
As someone who owns every single figure so far, this is actually looking like the best of the games to me. Did anyone actually watch the proper gameplay video and do their research instead of the lulz bad appeal to kids trailer? They've drastically overhauled the gameplay. Hey, they changed the whole genre. It's a platformer now instead of a dungeon crawler. And it has a new developer, Vicarious Visions, who made the first game on the 3DS. I didn't expect to see majority of people here saying "OH ANOTHER SKYLANDERS".
I'll be buying both Swap Force and Infinity.
I can tell my friend is gonna be broke from buying all of this crap!
YAAAAAAAY SKYLANDERS! Screw you Activision.
CANT WAIT LOVE THE GAME
This is going to go the same way as Guitar Hero.
Ohh god...this and Disney Infinity? sighs.....
The trailer made it look great.Guess I'll have to hurry up and get Giants.
Without even having all of the giants out here in Australia and this announced, I'm just tired of the series now.
Just last week my girlfriend and I were thinking of selling our Skylanders, because it's just too much to keep up with, and this announcement that comes before even all the Giants are out is just too much IMO.
ive never played a skylanders game before
should i start to now???
The swapping idea is a great idea, and I'm sure the game will be good, but this whole character buying thing is getting a bit too much now.
It's cool, but as others have said, it's too much. A new portal, plus new figures... and the price of figures has gone up since the first game. I can only imagine the swappable figures will be over $10, and that's just not fun anymore. I'll see what happens later in the year, but this may be something I can hold off on until there's a sale.
It looks like a really cool idea, but I'm done with Skylanders. All the waiting and chasing figures just wears on you, and its not cheap. We are still missing figures we wanted for the 2nd game, and mostly havn't had time to play it lately. I think its more likely we're going over to Infinity since gameplay seems more extensive.
I wish Skylanders would just release a game sequel with what they have out- more gameplay with them, but only a game to buy, not another line of figures.
@Yoshi3DS They are fun games, particularly if you have a 3DS too to be able to play both versions. Just be prepared to shell out a lot of money for extra figures and not be able to find some. A few Giants still aren't out.
"This makes me sick. Three games in three years with a ludicrous number of figures to throw money at. This is corrupt in ways that I won't even start to explain"
And the fun thing is: Disney will do exactly the same!!
Well, I won't jump in!
