It's a New Year, but the same old story in the Japanese hardware and software charts. In recent times it's not been a question of how dominant Nintendo (particularly 3DS) is, but the extent to which it's outperforming rival systems. The most recent results (covering the first week of the New Year) continue along the standard trend, but show a software line-up in rude health and, possibly, a still muted level of enthusiasm for Wii U.
On the software side, Media Create's figures show 17 games on Nintendo systems in the top 20, the bulk of which are on 3DS. Animal Crossing: New Leaf is still bossing the show, but Mario's latest adventures are also performing reasonably — lifetime sales are in parenthesis.
1. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf (Nintendo, 11/08/12) – 133,134 (2,103,089)
2. [3DS] New Super Mario Bros. 2 (Nintendo, 07/28/12) – 90,264 (1,834,055)
3. [3DS] Paper Mario: Sticker Star (Nintendo, 12/06/12) – 68,262 (470,394)
4. [3DS] Inazuma Eleven Go 2: Chrono Stone Reimei / Neppuu (Level-5, 12/13/12) – 51,519 (365,536)
5. [Wii U] New Super Mario Bros. U (Nintendo, 12/08/12) – 50,319 (419,710)
6. [3DS] Fantasy Life (Level-5, 12/27/12) – 42,291 (159,361)
7. [Wii U] Nintendo Land (Nintendo, 12/08/12) – 41,426 (250,473)
8. [PSP] One Piece: Romance Dawn (Namco Bandai, 12/20/12) – 40,137 (264,739)
9. [3DS] Tongari Boushi to Mahou no Machi (Konami, 12/20/12) – 38,986 (119,735)
10. [3DS] Run For Money: Flee From the Strongest Hunters in History (Namco Bandai, 07/05/12) – 35,624 (373,096)
11. [3DS] Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity (Pokemon, 11/22/12) – 35,190 (408,889)
12. [3DS] Taiko Drum Master: Chibi Dragon and the Mysterious Orb (Namco Bandai, 07/12/12) – 34,529 (375,062)
13. [3DS] Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (Best Price!) (Capcom, 11/15/12) – 32,007 (155,601)
14. [3DS] Mario Kart 7 (Nintendo, 12/01/11) – 30,291 (1,939,257)
15. [3DS] Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney (Level-5, 11/29/12) – 30,235 (249,689)
16. [PS3] Fist of the North Star: Ken’s Rage 2 (Tecmo Koei, 12/20/12) – 29,180 (194,157)
17. [Wii] Taiko Drum Master Wii Super Wonderful Edition (Namco Bandai, 11/29/12) – 28,001 (349,960)
18. [PS3] Yakuza 5 (Sega, 12/06/12) – 26,631 (544,855)
19. [3DS] Wagamama Fashion Girls Mode Yokubari Sengen (Nintendo, 09/27/12) – 23,172 (282,642)
20. [3DS] Kobito Zukan Kobito Kansatsu Set (Colombia, 07/26/12) – 21,110 (226,888)
In terms of hardware, both models of 3DS saw a sales increase for a combined total of 279,259 units sold. Wii U retains third place — or second, if you combine the 3DS models — but is noticeably only slightly ahead of the PS3, while only two titles for the new system made it into the software top 20. The results are below, with last week's sales in parenthesis.
1. 3DS LL – 156,184 (150,581)
2. 3DS – 123,075 (99,264)
3. Wii U – 67,083 (69,386)
4. PlayStation 3 – 64,352 (53,222)
5. PSP – 54,873 (41,914)
6. PlayStation Vita – 33,309 (20,492)
7. Wii – 5,632 (6,741)
8. Xbox 360 – 1,893 (1,986)
Sales in Japan are generally high at the moment, a reflection of the busy shopping season, and the results of the now-profitable 3DS hardware is sure to delight Nintendo. The progress of Wii U is steady but unspectacular, and as 3DS shows it needs big-hitting and anticipated games to truly capture the Japanese public's imagination and rival the handheld.

Move along people there's nothing to see here! Well nothing Wii haven't seen over the last 13 months or so!!
I can't believe Professor Layton vs Ace Attorney is being outsold by... Wagamama Fashion Girls Mode Yokubari Sengen
Pokemon x & Y will sell the hell out of 3DS I hope Go on Nintendo and release more epic games~
I want to live in Nintendo Land.... I mean Japan for a bit
The hardware numbers look odd. Are those numbers 2013 alone? In some cases, this year's number is greater than the yearly number? Mass returns?
I hope Animal Crossing will one day launch globally.
@Burning_Spear "[Hardware sales] are below, with last week's sales in parenthesis."
@TobieOBrown How can Wii and Wii U have more sales last week than for the entire year? Returns?
Those numbers for Yakuza 5 don't seem too good.
I used to be quite anti-Sony when they were dominant (mainly because before the wii, they were the shovelware kings and their controllers have always sucked) but now I feel bad for them.
This is good news anyway. At least we know Nintendo won't go pop this gen unless some very bad business decisions are made!
Hopefully Wii U picks up like the 3DS did. It needs more games, but bad games like Nintendo Land won't help.

If it is your opinion that Nintendo Land is bad, it doesn't meant that is the prevailing opinion.
@Burning_Spear this weeks sales aren't in parenthesis, last week's sales are in parenthesis. Example: This week in Japan 67,083 Wii U systems were sold, last week 69,386 Wii U systems were sold. Thus: "Wii U – 67,083 (69,386)." The hardware list has it different to the software list.
& awesome! As long as Nintendo is up there making lots of money then they'll keep making the games, so I'm happy & I'm glad Paper Mario: Sticker Star is still selling quite well
@C-Olimar Most game reviewers can't review a game like Nintendo Land correctly. They'll just throw out a slightly positive score because it says Nintendo on the cover and hope they'll never have to play the game again, because it actually isn't any fun.
@Mahe
Lol no. Get the Froak out if you are going to be like that.
I personally think Nintendo land is under rated because stigma against it for being a "mini game collection" and because people want smash bros and Zelda and they want them now.
yakuza 5 is in japan and yet we in europe still didn't even get yakuza 1&2 HD collection! can't wait for animal crossing tho =D
Media Create is done recording the PS2 and DS.
@Pikachupwnage If you like it, good for you. But I've played it, I've tried to like it, hoping it would turn better, and it just sucks. It's bad for me.
Since there's no point comparing the Vita and the 3DS (X+Y remove all doubt) perhaps we should start comparing the Vita and Wii U? Though hopefully it won't come to that.
Well of course the 3DS is winning it's a handheld and it's cheaper. The Wii U is doing great considering it just came out. The PS Vita has been out for almost a year now and the Wii U is kicking it's butt. And it hasn't even been out for two months. The Wii U has a bright future. P.S. Ha ha Microsoft nobody's buying your systems.
@MultiMariosonic Not in Japan they aren't because the XBox was discontinued there.
@Mahe But see, you said it right there. It's bad for YOU. Don't pretend like everyone else is just pretending to like it just because you don't. I think it's fantastic, and you're literally the only person I've ever seen who doesn't feel that way as well. You're allowed to have your opinion, but don't be so pompous about it.
takatmon is right but dont forget before that comes MH 4!!!! MEGA MONEY coming nintendos way this year.
Wii U will shine like the 3DS someday. Give it some time.
@DerpSandwich I'm seeing a lot of other people that aren't liking it. Just because you don't know any, or because they haven't posted here, doesn't mean they don't exist. For me, the people liking it are the isolated cases.
@Mahe Miiverse begs to differ
They should release all those current Japan only 3DS games to get better results in the West. But still, just wait until X and Y come out.
@Svengoolie Uh, yeah, those are good numbers. It's sold half a Million in Japan alone. For a game that came out, what, last month? On a home console, in a country that has a third the population of the United States. Those are really good numbers.
@Mahe Then I have absolutely no idea where you've been hanging out.
@Mahe If you took a world tally, most people would say Nintendo Land is fantastic. Your argument has been closed until better evidence is provided. I want to see a poll, one that has an impartial voting group.
@AlphaIchimoru Miiverse would be the best proof he could have, but Miiverse likes Nintendo land so his point is invalid
Ooh ooh, I want to argue the Nintendo Land thing. I like it, so if you don't you must be dumb... But really most people I know like it well enough, but its not gonna float everyone's boat. I dislike lot's of games other people love (Skyrim), so I'm good w/ you Mahe.
@AlphaIchimoru World tally? I'm sure you'd find more disinterest and dislike than liking for Nintendoland.
@Hokori In Miiverse, you've got people who are already invested in the Wii U, and on top of that, usually the people who like it will post, the ones who don't like it will just refrain.
Obviously, some people like it. But what the reviews and Miiverse aren't telling is that a lot of people haven't been excited by it.
I wonder if we can call the charts the 3DS software sales chart because quite frankly almost everything on that list is 3DS software.
Well I'm glad Nintendo Land is doing relatively well. A lot of the minigames are pretty hilarious to watch and play when you've got a bunch of friends.
