Nintendo said we wouldn't see any Wii U games in tonight's Nintendo Direct Live, but Satoru Iwata snuck in a cheeky glimpse of Super Mario Bros. to show off the system's new Miiverse functionality.
It was only a short video and focuses more on the system's all-new social networking functions, but we'll never pass up an opportunity to show you the new Mario.
Expect to see a lot more of this game on Tuesday.

Apologies for the 360p quality!
Yet another New Super Mario Bros. game. Yay. I hope it's digitally packed with the console.
The function were friends post on a certain level looks cool.
Launch title maybe?
@pntjr You betcha.
Wow, they hired an artist. Nice to see some imagination in the background there, especially compared to the last time we saw this game.
Loving the social aspect out of the box.
It's interesting that the Mii comments pop-up seems to demonstrate that not only do the discussions seem to be localisable to a specific game and a specific level, but also to a very specific area in the level too - all those three comments discuss dying just before the flagpole, rather than any other nefarious traps placed earlier on.
wow so cool!
Notice how those leaning towers of Pisa appear both in the game footage and the overworld footage. That seems like too much of a coincidence for this merely to be a mock stage.
Back round= Beautiful
i think the title should be: U Super Mario Bros (USMB)
I love the background too. So.. Otherworldly. Hope it doesn't distract me too much.
@Burning_Spear
You noticed that too. I think it is a mock stage, but that they just put more thought into the fact that entering a stage doesn't mean you left the world. What really gets me excited though, is the way the overworld map resembles Super Mario World.
@Pengaweeno
You know, that thing looks a lot more realistic in a still image than it did in motion in MIB 3.
Flying Squirrel? Nintendo taking cues from SegaSonic the Hedgehog there...
@Alienfish: I wish it did, but it really looks to me to have more in common with the maps from NSMBW. Guess we'll see moving forward, though...
I think this is beautiful.
WILL buy!
Leaning mountains... Super Mario World anyone?
It said something about a Baby Yoshi in the friend's chat.
Officially a bit more intrigued.
I don't get why everyone is suddenly against NSMB, but I dig those games a lot. Especially if this one still has 4 players (or, maybe 5. Hey, Nintendo?). The new high detail backgrounds look great. Totally excited for this.
ohh yh thanks james i never thought of that
@Pengawoo: Getting boring now. You've posted it like 6 times or something.
@Pengaweeno No! I could never fight Mr. Blobfish!
The background looks pretty nice. Can't wait to see more.
It screams New Super Mario World; looks promising.
@Pengaweeno This Blobfish is getting some popularity. If only it knew how popular it was, maybe it would give us a simile.
I know everyone is getting down on New Super Mario Bros but this already looks like Nintendo is doing new things with the game. The hand drawn backgrounds look nice and the people talking about flying squirrel suits and baby yoshis that balloon up, not to mention the world map has me very excited.
Looks like I will never need to leave my couch again in order to beat any video game on the Wii U.
Iwata's voice is so sexy!
This looks very nice, still I'm not that impressed. They need a new art style.
I'll buy it if they have Yoshi and it is $10.
Am I the only one who thinks this looks like Super Mario World?
Flying squirrel Suit could be in it considering pilot wings resort
@mamp i couldnt agree more
Can't say I want to spend another $50/$60 on another New Super Mario Game. They are basically copy and pasting the game...
@mamp Thanks for the lol. I needed that.
I do like the background and the world map but do we HAVE to collect the three star coins in EVERY SINGLE Mario Bros game now? Let's try something different, shall we?
I hope the overworld map has as many branches as Super Mario World. As a matter of fact, this game should be called "New Super Mario World".
I love reading.....but I just can't read that fast, Nintendo.
@MetalDragonZero That's how I feel. The NSMB formula is played out like crazy. I'm tired of playing the same overworlds over and over.
Background and map reminiscent of Super Mario World? Baby Yoshi mention? Possible New Super Mario World? I... I feel dizzy... Head spinning in retro bliss... Faints with huge smile on face
Some interesting in-depth observations on what we saw today in this video...

@FluttershyGuy
That blew my mind, new Super Mario World? Yes please!!
Flying squirrel probably works like yellow cape.
@MeowGravy
If it's New Super Mario World/Super Mario World 2 (Yoshi's Island isn't canon SMW2), I don't care what else is announced at E3. That could be the only game announced and I'd be happy.
@aaronsullivan
Going by the design of a flying squirrel and similarity in possible usage to the Super Cape, I can totally see that!
Something else I noticed on the SMW-esque world map: There are the red and blue dots at destinations. Might be like World, where red-dotted levels have two exits!
New Supah Malleo World! Woo-hoo
My body is ready for Squirrel Mario.
SMW-like overworld? Yes please.
Call it New Super Mario World Mii, pack it in every box, and it'll be the best-selling game ever.
What I'd love to see is New Super Mario World come with little power up figurines, fire flower, super mushroom, et cetera. All the symbols for the power ups in the game. Only they aren't just toys. On top of being awesome collector's items, you lay them on the communication reader on the Wii U GamePad and it sends that power up your way in the game!
I'd Love for da WII U to come out in October.....lol that way it'll be close to my "BDay" and i can jus have da most wonderful gift sitting up in my living room......um is it jus me or do anyone else love the sent of a new game system or NEW game.....BTW my 3ds still smells like da day i opened it!!! cant wait till da wii u comes out.....its gonna me feel like a kid all over agains....almost remind of the super nintendo/nintendo64 days......i hope that everyone who comment about da WII U purchase it on day one so we can all play together!!
If You got a 3ds and would like to add me as friend leave me your name and your friend code please!!!!
I just hope when I get to the last boss of a game, someone else doesn't ruin it for me by telling me what pattern it has or how to kill it! However if it's optional then that will be very cool!
so you can write whatever you want when playing the game? I can already imagine the amount of profanities on screen when playing.
Could it be... New Super Mario World?
Not sure why everyone is like "Super Mario World! OMG!" as it doesn't look in any substantial way more like Super Mario World than the New Super Mario Bros. games already did (and probably had more in common with Super Mario World than they did with say, the original Super Mario Bros.) From that clip the enemies, foregrounds, flagpole, etc. are all Super Mario Bros/New Super Mario Bros. A slightly more zoomed-out overworld map seems to be it...
Well they'll have my money, atrocious review or not. I'm a mere pawn in Nintendo's massive plan when it comes to Mario games.
Has anyone failed to mention that there were frog suits in SMB3?
Cuz if Nintendo were to put frog suits instead of penguin suits, it would be too good. The frog suit should have the ability to cling on to things, like walls. Or it could have a vicious tongue attack that hurts enemies. Or even a high jump off the ground and an even higher jump off enemies.
I was wondering if the game is a pack in title, that it could only be a few levels or something, with paid DLC of later levels to come. What better way to get mums and dads and grandmas and grandpas to the eShop than a main 2D Mario game. I'm also confident that this Wii U Mario will be fairly complete game if Nintendo go ahead and go this route of DLC. But it would definitely be the way to go. I mean NSMBWii isn't that old, and NSMB2 will be out soon, having this game as a retail game doesn't make much sense. So if it's a pack in, I expect it won't be quite a whole experience, enough to warrant a purchase of a Wii U system and show off it's features, but being a pack in and "free", it should definitely leave people wanting more. Either through free and/or paid DLC levels and characters. It's just my theory. I can't wait to find out one way or another.
He said the people with accounts on you Wii U would be there when you boot up the console. Does that mean there's one main account and "sub"-accounts, or is it just the last one who was on the console?
Somehow I wasn't that interested before but these few seconds shown in Nintendo Direct got me interested. It still looks a lot like other New Super Mario Bros. games but all those message bubbles seem to have some hints that make me wonder what else there is to offer.
Level editor would be an awesome surprise but it's not likely to have one. But if it would have Level editor, this game would be a must buy to everyone
(Well... Almost everyone...)
@Faron This is Nintendo. I'm sure slang can be blocked
@FluttershyGuy
Thanks for the video link.
Looks great! I'm worried for spoilers from "Friends". But this actually looks like Nintendo put a lot of work into this game.
Looks amazing, I wonder how it will expand with a few more features.
hopefully the world map will be more like Super Mario World and less like NSMB/SMB3. Instand day 1 purchase for me!
Anyone notice how the trees have eyes on the map? That gave me uber nostalgia.
This has as many comments as the first article!
Where you can find a...
It really looks like an updated, social networked version of Super Mario World....and I love it since I played Super Mario World to death
AMAZING! Mario is awesome! Nintendo if full of good things right now!
Someone looks much more sexy than they did last year.
Please,miiverse next 3ds update!
