We celebrated the ten year anniversary of the Nintendo GameCube last year, including a rather fond retrospective on the console with the coolest handle. That was the North American anniversary, but today the console turns ten in Europe.
Although the GameCube wasn't Nintendo's greatest success in the home console market, easily eclipsed by its successor, it still had a loyal and passionate fan-base along with some stand-out game titles. For those of you who patiently waited for the European release back in 2002, we'd love to hear all about it in the comments below. You can also check out our picks for the top ten GameCube games and see how many you agree with.
Now, where's that cake.

I will celebrate by getting that Midnight Purple 3DS!
That is a great looking cake.
My bacheloer cake was a picture of Donkey Kong (from the arcade) and the words game over on it.
I didn't need reminding. I spent so long waiting for a UK launch date announcement that when May 3rd 2002 was finally announced the date seems to have been engraved into a section of my brain.
One of my favourite consoles ever. It helped me get through secondary school, which I hated lol, and made me feel proud to like a console that wasn't just the in thing, like the PS2 was at the time.
I met all of my best friends and frequent gamer pals with this console. SSBM, MKDD, FFCC, LoZ:FSA, WarioWare:MMG, Ultimate Muscle, and many, many more. Good times in the 2000s with this console.
My mother gave me one for my birthday with Super Monkey Ball. Months later we went to a store and i saw SSBMelee. I didnt know what that was, but with Pikachu, Mario and Link on the cover i bought it. Hundreds of hours "wasted" with my brother and my cousins...huge laughs and really great moments. Then MKDD , Pikmin, Pokemon colosseum, Starfox adventures and all that great stuff. It is really my favourite console ever, and the one that made me love Nintendo.
@Yosher - Yeah, same thing here.
I played games ever since I was 6 year old (somewhere in the SNES era), but I didn't truly start expanding gaming as my biggest hobby until I got the GameCube. And am I glad it happened, gaming is a wonderful hobby and I'm still busy expanding my GameCube collection (and overall Nintendo collection, at that).
What I was looking forward to mostly was Mario Kart: Double Dash, mostly because I didn't really know about Smash Bros Melee yet (due to lack of internet back in the day). Either way I got both the games eventually, and it's still one of my most loved consoles. Then again, I love any and all of my Nintendo consoles!
LOVE the Gamecube. I keep one hooked up on every TV in the house. Happy Birthday you goofy little lunch box.
@Meloman WTH! I had all those games! ULTIMATE MUSCLE!
I got GameCube (the black one) at launch along with Luigi's Mansion. Nice game but just too short - thankfully the sequel should have more content . There was some really amazing games released for that little box, like Wind Waker (probably my favourite Zelda-game), Resident Evil 4 and TimeSplitters 2 (which I played A LOT).
Possibly my favourite game console of all time. Smash Bros Melee is almost enough for that achievement. Back when this was launched we had to wirte the name of the day on the blackboard in our class. It was my turn that day and instead of writing anyones birthday, I made a special mention of the release of Nintendo GameCube. One student in our class asked: "What´s a gamecube?" I thought about asking him whats Playstation2 but didn´t bother. Good times.
Didn´t buy this until 2004 but boy it was so much fun playing Smash Bros in my cousins house. It was also the last Nintendo console to date with a "normal" controller. I never really liked Wiimotes, Brawl and Mario Kart are always played with NGC-controllers.
They should remake NGC-controllers for WiiU as alternative choice. No one wants to play Smash Bros with Wiimote, or Classic controller that has Wii-mote attached to it.
Ah i remember launch day went n picked up my black gcn with luigis mansion n rogue leader the plus side was my bday was the next day which bought me wave race good times!
Loved the Gamecube; under-appreciated for sure. It was the first console I bought with my own money
And still the system with the greatest games they've ever put out.
Happy Birthday the Game Cube!! Super Smash Bros. Melee is the Best-selling game!
Being only 15, and getting my GameCube only 5 or 6 years ago, I missed out on a lot of great games. I've caught up with quite a few in recent years (Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Sunshine, The Wind Waker) but even though I'm still buying the occasional classic, it's hard to catch up.
That's why I'm really excited for the possibility of a GameCube VC on Wii U - I want to play Paper Mario 2, dammit!
So many games on the GameCube I spent sleepless nights playing:
Super Smash Bros Melee, Star Fox Adventures, Metroid Prime, Custom Robo, Wind Waker, Zelda Collector's Edition, Luigi's Mansion, etc.
I remember the gamecube microphone and the gameboy player. I remember the microphone only being used with Mario Party 6. Even then we wouldn't use it the way it was intended for the minigames. We would shout random words or insults into the mic during the "Fruit Talktail" minigame and it would cause a random platform to fall. So if we shouted [insert random obscenity here], the banana platforms would randomly collapse and the other players would have no way of knowing what to expect. You can imagine how much more hillarious and difficult this minigame became while this was going on.
Funny, I got my gamcube from amazon today
Still my favorite console of all time. Even my brother couldn't resist to leave his PS2 in favor of playing Melee or the like with me, along with other friends where we lived at the time.
To this day I am on the look for games I may have skipped/missed out on because of not giving them a try, etc. back in the day. It holds one of my biggest collection of games.
My favorites are still Pokemon Colosseum, XD: Gale of Darkness, SBM, LOZ: Twilight Princess, Luigi's Mansion, any WWE wrestling game, the Mario Party games, and various others in my collection.
I had many great times with my Cube. Mario Kart: Double Dash and Animal Crossing were some of my favorites.
Pretty good console overall, though it was lacking JRPGs, with the Baten Kaitos games being the only good ones. Other games I really liked on gamecube include Eternal Darkness, Melee, Resident Evil 4, F-Zero GX, Metroid Prime 1& 2, Wind Waker, Super Mario Sunshine and Ikaruga and few others.
(Oh and don't bother bringing up tales of symphonia or skies of arcadia, both of those are only mediocre at best.)
@expa0
I will fight you, man-to-robot, for lumping Skies of Arcadia in the same boat as Tales of Symphonia, and for saying Baiten Kaitos is a better game than it.
Yep well the gamecube failed badly with it's bad graphics I mean the 3DS is approaching the gmaecube's sales figures already!
First console i ever bought, lots of good memories to that awesome black box.
@benandarchie
Bad graphics? What are you talking about? Gamecube had superior graphics compared to PS2. Many of Gamecube's games like Wind Waker and Resident Evil 4 still look impressive today.
@Mickeymac
Meh, Tales of Symphonia was just epicly annoying and unimpressive, and Skies of arcadia was just a 70 hour borefest. Both of the Baten Kaitos games easily trump both of those in gameplay, story and music.
my fourth favourite nintendo console with my favourite being the N.E.S, then super nintendo, gameboy in that order.
it was definitely better than the N64 and 3rd party wise was and is better than the wii. my favourite games were metroid prime, Loz windwaker and twilight princess, F-zero GX, fire emblem: path of radiance, luigi's mansion, soulcalibur 2 and viewtiful joe.
I'd want that as my wedding cake. It would be the first cake with a handle.
@expa0 I wasn't gonna say this before because I was in a good mood, but you really do have no tastes in JRPGs. Baiten Kaitos had a horrible story, and I mean horrible. The gameplay in the first one was good, but not great. The sequel did that. The music was really good, though, I'll give you that, but music doesn't exactly make a game great on its own. Skies of Arcadia, on the otherhand, is an all-around classic - great gameplay that's old-school, yet innovative; an epic and memorable story that's up there with the best of the genre; an art style that really made me want to explore the world; and don't even get me started on the music, I could go on all day about it. This was a game I played just last year, too. The only thing it was missing was Voice acted cutscenes, that was a real bummer.
@benandarchie Sales numbers alone don't determine the quality of the console. It's mainly the games. Super Mario Shine, F-Zero, Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker And Twilight Princess to name just a few great titles.
@Mickeymac
I think both of the Baten Kaitos games have pretty good stories with some pretty amazng plotwists, but if it's not your thing that's fine. Skies of Arcadia had it's moments, but the random battles were slow and tedious and the ship battles even moreso. it had some really good boss battles in it though, the dynamic boss battle music was really good and kept my blood pumping when in a challenging battle. But overall I didn't really find the game that interesting. I did complete it though which is more that I can say for many other games.
I feel a little old after hearing Gamecube is 10.
Yay for Gamecube! Awsome games too!
@expa0
you forgot to add IMO (in my opinion) after your dissing comments about tales of symphonia and skies of arcadia because thats all it is
speaking of that tales of symphonia is a great game a different kind of rpg then what i was normally used too
Still my lunchbox of choice.
@BlackFira
Anyone with a half-a-mind should be able to tell it's a opinion even without a IMO. Besides you yourself claim Tales of Symphonia a great game yet I'm not seeing any IMOs.
ToS is one of my favorite rpgs ( Its not 1st since i haven't finished xenoblade) The wind waker is still my favorite zelda game. I remember the good days when I said spell incantations with Genis.(who happens to be my favorite video game character) Yep the gamecube was the best.
@expa0 Just FYI, presenting your opinion in a forceful manner does cause other to do the same. Adding "IMO" helps to lessen the blow, so to speak. Not that I'm one to talk.
GameCube = best console ever
The GameCube is one of my three favorite console that fill myself with great gaming memories, especially when i play Super Mario Sunshine, Well Happy 10th birthday (at Europe).
I'll always love my purple Gamecube <3
Of course, I love almost all Nintendo consoles, but Gamecube is... special =)
NO!
The cake is a LIE!
I would DEFINETLEY want that cake!!! But i had no idea the GameCube's birthday in North America was last year. So....HAPPY LATE BIRTHDAY AND HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
I don't think the Gamecube is as good as the Wii but its still a great console and there are still many games I still need to get for it. Some of my favourites are Super smash bros. melee, Mario kart: Double dash, Sonic heroes and of course, the masterpiece that is Tales of Symphonia!!! I love that game so much, its tied with Tales of the Abyss as my favourite games ever.
Not as good as the wii??? I never had to waggle my wave bird once!! (wave bird the best game pad ever!)
I have my ltd. edition platinum gamecube still, although i really need to get more games for it like metroid prime and wind waker.
Thanks for marking the beginning of me becoming a more serious gamer with The Windwaker. And for being so cheap neither me nor my parents could possibly have said no in late 2003.
At least i guess i should thank and not damn you for it.
I've only come to love gamecube games through the Wii's backwards compatibility since I never had a gamecube which I saw as I toy compared to PS2 (oh how wrong I was...). But oh man does it come with some awesome experiences Playing Wave Race Blue Storm, 1080 Avalanche, Pikmin 1 & 2, F-Zero GX, Super Mario Sunshine & I just finished Luigi's Mansion. There's more I'm gonna be playing but that's all i can be bothered to list Happy 10th b'day Gamecube
The best add on is the "Gameboy Advance" player. I can loads of games on the big TV!
I fancy playing some "TimeSpliters: Future perfect".
