Just because Mario Sports Mix combined multiple disciplines and the upcoming Mario and Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games will include 50 sports doesn't mean Mario's gone Jack of all trades, master of none: he's still in pursuit of single sport excellence, as next year's tentatively titled Mario Tennis proves.
The lawn tennis title was revealed at this week's Nintendo Conference in Japan, with seasoned plumbing sports developer Camelot Software Planning heading up production. We don't have much to go on for now, other than the predictable presence of Mario, Luigi, Bowser and Princess Peach as playable characters and a 2012 release. Still, the screenshots and trailer look nice, so that'll have to do for now.

Smashing!
The visuals actually look pretty good. I though they would be a little half-assed since it's a spin-off title, but it looks pretty sharp. The voice announcer is pretty annoying though, sound like he's got a cold or something IMO.
Commentator sounds like that dude from Wii Sports. D: But it looks really good, I wonder what the gameplay's like though?
Too many games Ninty, settle it down please, my back balance begs you.
This looks identical to the Gamecube version, right down to the music and Toadsworth's voice. I'll probably still get it, but I was hoping for something a little different.
There's just one thing they need to do in order get my purchase: make it an RPG again !!
Camelot was responsible for the most entertaining sports / RPG combinations of all time, and I had a blast with Mario Tennis on the GBA in particular. I can't fathom why they've given that up; without it, these games don't have enough to draw me in.
Yeah, sport games must have a rpg campaign!
Hmm, I think it's about time for Mario to play Rugby
Ace!
Everything Nintendo is showing of right now is looking so good.
Even though I'll sound like a fanboy: But I think they're using the power they have much better than Sony right now. I played little big planet at Gamescom and it look cluttered. Everything I see in this small trailer just looks perfect for a handgeld...the charakter models are awesome.
Looks pretty good may consider this but i will want to play a demo first. Luigis mansion is my jan 2012 priority game atm though.
@6 Yes, Wario demands it of his tennis games. Otherwise, replaying the original GBA game will always be both cheaper and more enjoyable. : )
That sounds like the commentator in Mario Power Tennis. Since this is handhelf they have to make an RPG like in all the handheld titles before.
If this doesn't have an RPG mode I'll still buy it, but I'll be extremely disappointed.
@Jango-Forest
I thought it looked the same. Power Tennis rehash confirmed.
The best Mario sports game coming back. Very excited about this.
This was a nice surprise, always wanted to try a Mario Tennis game
The same the same and the same over'n over again, thats Nintendo ... Innovation, sure ...
Looks great! Consider it bought
ONLINE PLAY IS A MUST
Yes! Camelot!
I love it, but it looks way too much like Mario Power Tennis
Wow, it even uses the same voices and sound effects as Power Tennis.
This actually looks quite good!
The game looks gorgeous, but it also looks like a remake of Mario Power Tennis. I sure hope it isn't. I would love to go to some new courts, play as new characters, and hear Bowser's new voice clips.
hope it's gonna be like the mario tennis on n64
This looks interesting. Never owned Mario Power Tennis.
sniff sniff, is this another port in the air, sure sounds and looks like it to me
I will be getting this.
I really hope this has online.
@Mandoble
Sony, Capcom, Microsoft, Namco, Valve, EA, Activision, THQ, Bethesda, Square-Enix, Factor-5, Bungie, Naughty Dog, etc. pull the same stunt.
Hush up.
Glad they're focusing on ONE sport only. I feel Mario sports should be dedicated sports titles. Would be great to mix him in with the MLB, NHL, NFL, NBA, and FIFA players ala the EA Street series.
WANT WANT WANT WANT WANT WANT
I still don't see any reason why I should spend $40 on this when I can just boot up Mario Tennis from the N64 on my Wii.
What? No hammers?
This looks really nice though, but would it kill to add real shadows instead of just circles under the characters? I know Mario games aren't supposed to be realistic, but when the rest of the game looks that good, small things like that become really noticeable.
Why are the shadows in most games on the Nintendo platforms always those archaic circles!
It's really starting to piss me off!
This is 2011 for Christ's sake.
The visuals are impressive.
It's funny...while I do tend to notice realistic shadows where applicable, Nintendo's penchant for using the simple circles really doesn't bother me much. I guess I'm usually too busy paying attention to the gameplay.
This DOES look a HECK of a lot like Mario Power Tennis...but then the first announcement of Animal Crossing 3DS did nothing to show off new features either, so...give it some time, I guess.
If this isn't online compatible im not even going to bother
Two problems with this game for me. I find it hard to go back to conventional control tennis play after playing it in fun motion control on the Wii. That's Grand Slam Tennis, NPC Mario Power Tennis, Sega Superstars and Wii Sports tennis! Most of those I've sold after playing them to smithereens. Leads onto 2nd point, I tend to sell Mario Sports games after 6-18 months of playing them to death. Only have Mario Sports Mix as it has enormous replay value (they all do I know, but this moreso). Not sure about this purchase.
@MrDanger88 Yes because online is everything, right?
i so hoped that they would go back to the RPG style games. But as long as the gameplay holds up to these games, its fine for me maybe we get mario golf: 3D Tour someday
Camelot should be doing better things than Mario Tennis.
Like the next Golden Sun for instance.
Mario Power Tennis on GC was awesome. But I'm looking forward to Mario Tennis on 3DS!!
I fear it's just another port! I didn't see anything new. And the music I have also heard before!
It would be FANTASTIC of this was the direction Nintendo's going with Virtua Boy games. Rather than giving us a quick port, take the original games from the Virtua Boy and give them a complete over haul like this. Only time will tell.
I can't wait for this game!
Holy shizzle Batman! I hope this has online play.
This looks far too much like Power Tennis. I'll stick to my used copies(I should have never sold my original owed copies) of the N64/GBC Mario Tennis/Golf games, as they were my fav for varying reasons, both opinion, & actual facts:
1. Toadstool Tour custom characters can't be deleted separate from the entire TT save file. That's stupid.
2. Reason #1 isn't an issue in the N64 Mario Tennis although Mario Golf N64 suffers from constant need to upload custom characters every time you boot up the game.
3. I liked the custom character creation, that was in the Mario Golf/Tennis N64 titles.
Looks pretty good.
YES!!! just what I was hoping for! This is gonna be an awesome game
does this have 4 players because im going to beat them
