Mario Kart 7 is the official name for the House of Mario's next racer, and here's the official logo to make that even clearer.
The logo might not be much to look at, but the accompanying artwork is certainly a lot easier on the eye, depicting Mario, Luigi and Bowser in a range of vehicles.
We played the game in June and more recently in July, and found it rather enjoyable, as you'll see from our Mario Kart 7 preview.
Mario Kart 7 is down for release in December this year. What do you make of its logo — sleek and shiny enough for you, or does it show a lack of imagination? Sound off below.

I think it looks gr8! Can't wait!
That logo is
sexyawesome! It looks like the seven from 007.
Huh, so it really is Mario Kart 7. Okay!
Pretty boring logo. [falls alseep]
Nice simple logo. I actually quite like it!
I like the name and I think the logo looks pretty nifty too.
needs a different name other than 7. Better off with Mario Kart 3D.
@8: Yes, yes the logo does look nifty! Let's see this nifty logo on some boxart por favor. Or please, because I'm not Spanish.
The 7 looks similar to Bond's 7. Like it.
Two of the most original game names for Mario Kart are Double Dash and the original Mario Kart. Everything else has been named after the system. This one, while not too original, is still something different.
Uhm... it's... alright? Not too great, but better than Mario Kart Wii, hated that logo especially with the Wii Wheel...
Don't like the name either... reminds me of Windows 7. :/
Very cool
I like the logo, but I don't really like the name
That logo looks awesome! It almost makes up for it being such a bad and illogical name.
That logo is lame. My goat could have come up with a more intrinsic and creative design.
@xDemon720x I I didn't like Mario Kart Wii's logo either until I found an image with out the wheel.
The name is ok, I still would prefer Mario Kart 3D but the 7 looks like 007 so it looks cool.
It's clearly based on the Formula 1 logo:
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_VKnlNvwbGMM/S68AF8SYdTI/AAAAAAAAA8M/w7rK0Fygvqc/s1600/F1.jpg
it looks like the f1 logo not a fan of f1 but like mariokart one
By air? I'm a little iffy about that method of transportation.
Anyway, these screenshots are making the wait easier for me
Nice! the logo is awesome! i love it! Can't wait to get this game!
@Oregano yeah, certainly looks inspired from the F1 logo.
Mario Kart 7 - bizzare - there was no Mario Kart 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6!
They put almost no thought into the game's title.
What is F1? I didn't even know it existed.
Mario Kart series
Sorted by release date:
1. 1992-08-27 Super Mario Kart (Super Nintendo)
2. 1996-12-14 Mario Kart 64 (Nintendo 64)
3. 2001-07-21 Mario Kart: Super Circuit (Game Boy Advance)
4. 2003-11-07 Mario Kart: Double Dash!! (Gamecube)
5. 2005-11-14 Mario Kart DS (Nintendo DS)
6. 2008-04-10 Mario Kart Wii (Wii)
7. 2011-12-?? Mario Kart 7 (Nintendo 3DS)
As with other people here, I immediately thought James Bond when seeing this logo.
The logo, the name. That does not really matter. We already have to cope with having Waluigi appearing here.
@SKTTR thanks for putting that out there!
i don't see what the big deal is about the name. it's not like 'Super Mario Kart' (because more than a few games were 'super' back in the SNES days), "Mario Kart 64', 'Mario Kart Wii', or 'Mario Kart DS' were any more magical or inspired than 'Mario Kart 7'.
@tbd No other game in the series has been numbered so it just seems illogical. Even Mario kart 3D would be better as that is more consistent with the series.
Mario Kart 7.... lol this just makes me think of FF7.
Will we see a storyline? will Mario think he is actually Geno? Will Peach die when Bowser stabs her with His ridiculously long Sword?
The number 7 in this logo really fits this kind of game.
I'll give credits to Nintendo for thier effort.
Better than Mario Kart 3D.
@mariofanatic128: they've switched up the naming system before (Double Dash and Super Circuit), so 'consistency' or 'logic' isn't really anything to stand on, i don't think. i just don't see how 'Mario Kart 7' is more 'bad' than any of the other names they've used so far, lol. :3
anyway, i like the look of the 7 in the logo. can't wait to have this game in my hands, it's gonna be so much easier to race with friends than it is with MKDS :3
First, the logo sucks.
Second, the Metal Slug 7 logo is WAY cooler: http://www.gamefaqs.com/ds/943389-metal-slug-7/images
Third, there are actually 9 Mario Kart games in total now:
Fourth, WHY USE A ****ING NUMBER NOW? WHY, WHY, WHY, WHY? It made no sense when they did that with Puyo Puyo 7 and it makes no sense with this.
Bundle this with the red 3DS and I'll get it day one.
@tbd I can see your point but coming up with a more creative name like Super circuit of Double dash is better than using a number in a series that has never been numbered before. I would rather a name like one of those to than Mario kart 7 or Mario kart 3D but Mario kart 3D would still be better than Mario kart 7 as it does't make sense when they've never given a Mario kart game a title like that before.
@RadioShadow You have good points except for the second one. I don't think that 7 looks very cool... at all...
Mario Kart 007: The Ground is Not Enough
Very simple but elegant. I like it.
@Radio Shadow, don't count the arcade ones and you'll get 7
LOL @ #40
MK7... well, that'll confuse n00bs who will be impressed with MK7 and will be like, "when was three an MK1-6?"
MK64 had the 64 suffix because of the system at least, but unless something is in MK7 that has to do with "7", then I'll forever look at this as the most uninspired MK title ever.
Simple. But there is bueaty in simplicity. They have been pretty creative with the underwater motore in the back of karts and have been creative with adding the hang gliders. So they could have been a little more creative with the title, but whatever.
@RadioShadow: The two arcade versions aren't part of the main series
@CerealKiller062 Don't forget the word "Super" in the original mario kart game: Super Mario Kart.
Anyway, here I thought that people hated things named 3D or what console the game was played in :
@turtlelink and @lzbirdboy:
Why not? They have as much to do with Mario Kart as the rest of the games.
@Retr: People will hate any title given to the games. They're just so hard to please these days
The 7 may indeed be a nod to 007 now that you drive Bond-like karts that transform to drive under water and fly in the air, so for that alone the title might be the most inspired one in the series.
@RadioShadow Well the fact that this game is called Mario Kart 7, it's well established that the producers do not recognize the arcade versions as full pledged Mario Kart titles(or something).
If that makes no sense then sorry, it's kind of hard on how to word this.
Too bad, I prefer this logo.
Yup, someone thought that 7s look enough like 1s that a Formula 1 logo... let's say, "homage"... was the way to go.
Nice logo but they should move the 7 to the right a bit more, it looks nice overlapped but it's a bit too overlapped for my liking
7 is a lucky number. Making it a popular number on slot machines. Interestingly the Mario Kart trailer you can see on youtube, rather than the one you watch on the 3DS, shows the car custom screen. It looks similar to a slot machine. Also as every Mario Kart player knows, when getting an item it looks and sounds like a slot machine.
Here are some rough ideas.
A slot machine in which you use play coins to activate it.
A lucky 7 as a Mario Kart item.
Perhaps I am thinking this too much. Whether the 7 means something or not, I'm buying it.
Oh and the logo and name is awesome.
I like how the characters hold on the wheel with one hand, it makes it seem easy to handle. I do miss the red in the background and why not just name it Mario Kart 3ds?
Seven's just a magical numer, you can't do wrong with that.
Something tells me Nintendo became afraid of hinting potential buyers 3DS actually can display 3D images, thus the generic renaming of MK.
It's ok, nothing stunning.
It looks good.
Mare Kart 7 sounds stupid. They should have just gone with Mario Kart 3DS. I like how they name their games with the system. Even some games get the unofficial name added (like GoldenEye 64).
@59 what about double dash? super circuit?!
I like it, clean and simple. Bowser looks good too.
Where is mai Super Mario 3D Land logo?
Logo looks meh but I love the title. Much better than DS, Wii, and 3D.
WOW! I'm greatly impressed with that logo and promotional art.
its better than the others like mario kart wii thats the best why not super mario bikers becuase the bikes clearly out macth karts in that one they should have just scrap karts from it
When I saw that logo all I did was utter a flabbergasted "Wow". That is very impressive. It’s just Mario Kart yet that is a good looking logo. I love it.
All those casual non-gamers will now ask "Mario Kart 7? Where are all the other ones? I thought Mario Kart Wii and DS were the first games..."
The "Mario Kart" font is exactly the same as the DS and Wii versions.
Honestly, who cares about the name? That has nothing to do with how good the game will be; so, I don't mind the name.
Also, pretty cool logo with the whole Formula 1 thing going for it.
It looks like a combination of the F1 and James Bond logos. Kinda random, but I like it.
Luigi looks the same as he did in Mario Kart DS (nearly the same pose) except for the hangglider :3
Wow, they actually named it MK7!
Now that's uninspired.
They're gonna call the next Zelda game "Zelda 15", I'm calling it.
Like it.
Not bad, actually...
meh that logo is pretty boring
The logo and the name are short, sweet, and to the point. I love them both!
i dunno, i think it's kinda silly. no mario kart game was ever numbered before, why start now? meh, still looking forward to another fun mario kart game nevertheless.
It's interesting that they're backpedaling so much. I mean, putting 3D on the end was the go-to thing here. With the SNES, everything was "Super". With the N64, everything was "64". And with the DS and Wii, everything was "DS" (or had a subtitle with two words; the first starting with 'D' and the second starting with 'S') and "Wii". But for the 3DS, they're backing off. Probably because people hate 3D now (look at how many movies are now dropping the prominent "3D" from their titles; like Final Destination 5 - which WAS going to be called Final Destination 3D - or Conan the Barbarian 3D)
I really thought they were going to change the name before launch. MK7 sounds like they just don't care. Which is probably true - the last great MK was Mario Kart DS - but that doesn't mean they should advertise it. Especially with games like Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing on iOS doing well (Sega All Stars Racing, on any platform, is better than Mario Kart anyway. Thank you balancing) and ModNation Racers Vita out there...
They couldn't at least make up a new subtitle like Super Circuit or Double Dash? "Mario Kart Triple Dash" would actually work pretty well - Triple (the 3) and Dash (the D)? C'MON! That writes itself Nintendo! Just squeeze a 3 in there somewhere... "Tripl3-Dash" or something?
I could use some 7 Up right now. Maybe I can get some at 7/11?
@warioswoods
I'm with you on that one!
Mario Kart 7 sounds dumb, but the logo is awesome!
Boring logo is boring.
Looks Like they reserved the imagination for the game mechanics - I'm happy with that.
Not a bad logo, but I'm still no fan of the name. That number had better have some meaning in the game.
@Koto: Yes, same.
@Traxx: #56 Possibly
@tendoboy1984: #68 Possibly
I'm buying the game regardless of name.
Why do people always hate something like names? I do not care about the name when buying a game. Name tells absolutely nothing. Same goes to the Wii U.
"I'm a Nintendo 3DS, and MarioKart 7 was my idea..." Sorry, I couldn't avoid the Windows 7 pun!
So this is really the seventh iteration of MarioKart? #1 SNES -> #2 N64 -> #3 GBA -> #4 GC -> #5 DS -> #6 Wii -> #7 3DS -> #8 Wii-U ???
@80: "MarioKart Splash" sounds like a lovely idea. "MarioKart Glide" a similar name I just made up, would likely do equally good as well. I hope they include the water/air mechanics in the Wii-U version as well...
@StarDust: Mario Kart: Splash & Glide?
As mentioned many times before the 7 is heavily influenced by James Bond and the Formula 1.
And i may be a bit over-interpreting here but it looks a bit gliderish too.
And while Mario Kart: Splash and Mario Kart: Glide would have been interesting names (nice thinking WaveBoy and StarDust !) i hope the 7 implies how balanced this game is. Meaning: I hope the glider and underwater sections will not feel tacked on.
Edit: Good one, Stardust ! (#98)
Like the 7 but it's the same font on the mariokart text as they used for MarioKart DS. It's like when Playstation 3 used the same font as Spiderman...it kind of cheapens it when you re-hash a font, no?
Yeah. Let's all hope the 7 doesn't represent it's review score Here on NintendoLife. That would be pretty low for a current generation AAA Mario title!
i think the title is good. The mario kart for the gba doesn't say "Mario Kart GBA" it says "Mario Kart: Super Circuit". and for the snes it doesn't say "Mario Kart SNES". It says "Super Mario Kart". and i've had people around me complain about the Mario Kart Wii title and i don't think Mario Kart 7 is a boring or bland or whatever, i just think it's good
I WANT ROSALINA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
100th COMMENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's a nice logo. I would still have preferred some kind of text instead of a number.
It's a very minor complaint though.
THE SEVEN! I MUST HAVE IT XD
I'm surprised you have the developer listed as Retro Studios when they only contributed to the Donkey Kong based levels.
Behold:
Mario Kart: Dimension Drift
2 words: Hell Yes. The graphics are as good as MK Wii. The car customization looks great. And for some reason it reminds me of Star Fox..... Day 1 purchase.
Good looking "7" in the logo.
The. logo. is. awesome. but. the. name. is. a. bit. random.
I like both the name and the logo. I actually think that 'Mario Kart 7' is way better than 'Mario Kart 3D'. The '3D' part in 3DS titles is being overused.
@GeekiestGuyAround Oh, just because i said it is random doesn't mean i don't like it!
