Not many surprises this week - Both WiiWare releases were already announced in advance, and the Virtual Console game was expected to be released this week as well. The only surprise is the sole DSiWare release, but we can't imagine anyone being genuinely excited for it!
Contra ReBirth is the latest installment in the Contra series. You take control of either series hero Bill Rizer or the new character Genbei Yagyu, and from there it's pretty much the same as every previous game in the series - Blast your way through a number of stages with heavy weaponry without getting hit by the dozens of enemies that come at you, and fight a gigantic boss at the end of each one. As is usual with the series, it's very challenging, so you better be prepared! We thought that, although relatively short, it's a great revival - Any fan of the previous games will be very pleased with it.
ColorZ is a strange, unique attempt at a 3-player shoot 'em up. As either one or three players you take control of three ships with different colours, which can only pass through obstacles of the same colour - As you can imagine this means hectic switching back and forth between colours if you're playing alone, but with three players it's quite fun. As it was released in Europe back in July we've had a review available for quite a while.
Virtual Console offers just one new game (As is the norm now, pretty much) but it's the conclusion to an awesome trilogy - Super Return of the Jedi is, as you might imagine, based on the Star Wars movie of the same name and features the ending to one of the most well-known franchises of all time. Again, it's very similar to the previous games, so if you've downloaded them already you should be able to jump right in. We'll have a review available later this week.
DSiWare sees just one new release as well, and it is once again a tiny package consisting of content from a retail DS title - Clubhouse Games Express: Family Favorites features the games Hearts, Contract Bridge, Dominoes, Dots and Boxes, and Ludo. Again, they cannot be played online, which means the game loses a bit of its value, but if you like any of the included games it could be nice to have on your DSi at all times. A review will be up in a few days.
That's the end of the SNES Star Wars trilogy - What games do you think LucasArts will release next? More from today's press release:

I expected Super Smash Bros today... but eh... Contra ReBirth today. Good for you.
Ahh this is kinda "Boo", but at least there's something for me this week (Contra)
I probably will pick up Contra before Return of the Jedi. I remember that one having quite a few extremely difficult levels.
This should mean that Clubhouse Games Express: Strategy Games will be coming out pretty soon....but I did predict Super Return of the Jedi and a possible release of one of the Clubhouse Games Express series games.
YEAHH !!! COOONNNTRAA !! FINALLY !!
Finally, Contra.I hear it's still tuff as nails.
I did predict Super Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, but it's a good week in my book.
For all the potential complainers, please don't whin about this update. This is actually pretty good.
Wow Nintendo, Club house games express as the sole game? It's not like you don't have games to release on DSiWare, do you really have to make DsiWare suck noodles 97% of the time?
I should've gotten an Ipod Touch or save up for a PSPGo.
Absolutely nothing for me. I'm very disappointed with today's releases (particularly on the VC front) but I'm glad everyone else is happy.
No SSB or SMK? Damn, I was expecting one of them to come today. But hey, can't complain about Contra ReBirth or Super Return of the Jedi.
I don't believe it! The whole Super Star Wars trilogy is available on the VC! Well, I guess it's time for Indiana Jones' Greatest Adventures (SNES).
Hey Nintendo, any chance you can bring Star Wars to the VC this Friday for people in Europe. And Lucasarts IF you are reading this, PUT DAY OF THE TENTACLE AND FULL THROTTLE ON WIIWARE!!!!!
I'm dissapointed that we did not get Super Smash Bros. today. You would think that Nintendo would release it on Labor Day, they released Super Mario RPG during last year's Labor Day. But, this update is awesome. I think I will buy a Wii Points Card and try to buy Contra Rebirth, Super The Empire Strikes Back, and Super Return of the Jedi.
Fantastic update! I've been waiting for Contra Rebirth ever since it was announced and released in Japan months ago. I will admit that I was getting a little nervous that Contra Rebirth might remain Japan exclusive because after it was released in Japan, we didn't have any news about it coming over here at all. But that is a distant memory now, it's here!
Also, while I have no interest in Super Return of the Jedi, I know a lot of people have been waiting for the 3rd Star Wars game that was announced to come out, so I'm happy for them as well.
Come on people, its Nintendo, they don't care about labor day, they care about the every 50 VC games they release to release one of their own games! But Contra Rebirth and Retun of the Jedi I will have to pick up soon!
Last year we got Super Mario RPG although that was the big 250th VC game.
Super Mario Kart, Yoshi's Island, or Smash Bros 64 would have been nice. At this rate it'll take almost a year to reach 350!!!
i knew that star wars and contra would be out but they waited to long and i have no points. and on how nintendo works i don't know why people get there hopes up with out dated slow fighter game like smash bros. it will end up are 350 game
i am happy this week
Why would anyone even be upset today? Super Return of the Jedi and Contra Rebirth are awesome games?
Also I don't know why people expected SSB today just because it's labor day. You know that really makes no sense. I highly doubt Nintendo released SMRPG last year just because it was labor day.
Overall though, I am very happy this week
Wow, Super Mario RPG was the last VC game that I downloaded, and that was a year ago?
Truth be told, Super Mario Kart or Yoshi's Island would be a perfect fit for 350. But please Nintendo,
why only one game per week? You know, stop B!#$%ing about not getting Smash Bros., Super Mario Kart, Pilotwings, or before someone says it: Earthbound. This is agreat update with Contra Rebirth and Return of the Jedi, look at it this way. We have several games that I bet Europe would love to have on their service but for some reason they probably won't be on their VC such as many games that are imports for them! They have to wait forever just to get to the Hanabi Festival. Plus we all know that we will get Pilotwings and Smash Bros and several of Europes games!
Truth be told, Super Mario Kart or Yoshi's Island would be a perfect fit for 350. But please Nintendo, why only one game per week?
To have good games come out still during 2010 and 2011... Its pretty obvious.
We don't want good games in 2010, that when we will be broke from retail
Colors not colours.
FFIV: The After Years final chapter today!
I...I think this Clubhouse Games Express is currently exclusive to America...this requires more research...
Great update. Nothing for me though.
@29: Exactly! Lol.
@30: Thats how you spell colors in the UK. (And I think some other places, too.)
@KS8- I figured (Except for dsi) that this was what we'd get, unless we got lucky, because we had been getting 2 ww and one vc lately. I do wish we would have gottin one of the other games we were waiting for.
@ JayArr Colours is a correct spelling for colors. I believe it is the way the spell it in Europe
Glad I can complete my Super Star Wars trilogy...I am just eager to see SSB and SMK now, but I can be patient.
Maybe this isn't such a bad update after all!! The last FFIV chapter came out today!!
"features the ending to one of the most franchises of all time"
Missing word? Maybe not. It is one of the most fanchises, in that it's entered every media in existance. Books, TV shows, video games, movies, underwear, bedsheets, toilet paper, flamethrowers...
Oh wait. I'm thinking of Spaceballs.
you know... everybody's complaining about no smash bros.... but i bet at least 98% of everyone on this thread owns Brawl. i personally don't see the reason to have both. it was a GREAT landmark game... but Melee, and subsequently Brawl are better in every way, while still keeping everything that made the original so captivating. i think it would be a nice addition for those who still haven't bought Brawl and want to test the waters for $10 first... but i'd never download it. I'm dying for Nintendo to release Donkey Kong 64. the last TRUE (imo) Donkey Kong game ever made. Lanky Kong come back!!!!!!!
Love the idea of DSiware , hate the execution. So far with just a handful of exceptions DSiware is worthless for the most part.
I would love to see DK 64 but that Jetpack game is what I think that they are having trouble with!
This update definitely sucks. Here I was thinking we might get something good considering it's the labor day update. I guess I forgot for a second that it's NOA we're dealing with. I'm just gonna wait for the 350th VC game for SSB. I didn't think they had the audacity to hold it back that long but it really looks like that's what is gonna happen.
Why are some of you saying "I thought SBB would come"? There has been no sign for it coming today.
Labor Day. Special game for a special holiday and all that.
"Wahh!! No SSB today!" Anyone that complains about not getting outdated trash, please refocus your whining on something worthwhile, like how Cave Story isn't out yet and it's September 7th. Sigh. Nothing for me today (as usual).
As predicted, people complained about the lack of a Nintendo game.
Oh I was hoping for arkanoid plus today... but i will definitely DL Contra once the shop channel updates.
Excited about Contra!
I didn't hold any expectations.... but I give this update a huge thumbs down. I had the day off and was really hoping to download something fun to play .. but I see nothing worth even five measly dollars on this list.
Well, I'm glad that we finally got the Star Wars games out of the way. Glad Conta's out, but I'm not going to buy it, and that leaves Clubhouse games. I may personally like the first one because of President, but buying this would be a complete waste of time.
@P. D4NG3R &everyone else how thinks that SSB doesn't matter,
Have you ever heard of nostalgia? Greatness of simplicity? Hyrule Castle? Yeah, the game still rocks because we still remember the first time we played it. I personally haven't played the game in years, so I would really like it if NoA would show some conman decency and give themselves free cash.
sigh
dsi.......
WHHHHYYYYYYYYY!?!?!!?!?!?!!?!!?!?!!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!??!?!?!!?!?!?!?!!?
Nothing for me here. I'll just download the final ffiv: after years chapter.
its like nintendo don't care about their games other then releasing 3rd parties. still no ssb , no smk , no starfox , no super mario all stars , no mario parties , no donkey kong 64 , no yoshi's safari , no mario piant. sign
I d expect Lucasarts to release either Indy's Greatest Adventures or an N64 game next...
Okay I guess I will try this again...
I am going to have to get $10 for Contra I am pretty bad at the games but I still want to play it XD.
I agree with the Labor Day doesn't mean "Oooo Special Game" but it does kind of make sense and thus we have Contra in my opinion. I am not thrilled with Return of the Jedi (Awesome movie though) but that just leaves more room for a variety of games now.
Also I tried posting before and its not loading for me so apologies if my other post is in existence without me knowing.
I might get the other 2 Super Star Wars, but currently nothing I really want. It's not like I need a new game anyway until I beat Professor Layton.
Man, screw the Shop Channel, I'm going to GameStop (assuming it's open today...)
Nothing for me
sigh
Aaaahh, so NA of course get two wiiware games where we got one last week (when we got contra rebirth). They also get the VC and an actual DSiWare game and not just an app.. Typical, typical...ahhh weelll, congratulations
Aaaahh, so NA of course get two wiiware games where we got one last week (when we got contra rebirth). They also get the VC and an actual DSiWare game and not just an app.. Typical, typical...ahhh weelll, congratulations
So with the Super Star Wars trilogy coming to an end this week, let's hope games like Super Mario Kart, Final Fantasy, PilotWings, Super Smash Bros., Earthworm Jim 2 or any of the VC Arcade games arrive the following weeks.
This is sad news across the whole.
First EU don't get a VC game, NA dont get SSB or Pilotwings and now even the homeland doesn't get as many games anymore (well...they still get much more then us but it is definately pacing itself now).
I will be glad if we get even a VC game nowadays . Good update anyway for you guys.
I do wounder why they didn't release the original Contra along side Rebirth. I would like to know what is keeping it from being released!
"and go up against the Empire’s worst, from Jabba the Hutt to the Emperor himself."
I don't mean to nitpick Nintendo's press release, but Jabba the Hutt had no ties with the Empire. He was the Star Wars equivalent of a mobster. Anyway I am picking up ROTJ very soon.
I was hoping for something BESIDES Star Wars! sigh
Anyway, I'm off to download Contra Rebirth!
I bought Toki Tori yesterday, and I'm saving the rest of my points for Night game
Since I already have SSW for SNES and SESB for VC, I won't bother with SROTJ
No Cave Ctory nor Thorduim Wars
@StarFox
Why not?
Just came to see Hardy's weekly dsi rant. I wasn't disappointed.
Yeah i was expecting something better for today besides the end of the Star Wars SNES Games on the VC.I am beginning to think that Nintendo does not give a crap about the VC Service anymore.Sure we get 3rd party games from places like Capcom, Hudson, and even Sega.
But this just means that since the Super Star Wars Games are done that we will either see more games or even less games the way NOA is treating us.Sure you could say stop complaining but it's not like everyone you tell to stop complaining will listen. When i got Clay Fighter i was happy and stopped complaining for it to come out.
I just hope that we don't have to wait for VC Game 350, VC Game 400, and VC Game 450 for some of the Nintendo based games that we want.
Sigh. At least we have all the SNES Super Star Wars games now.
This is a great update. Sheesh. Time sure does fly. It seems like just yesterday the Wii was beginning it's download services and people were excited about really weird crappy games. Now here we are with an awesome update all around and all the jaded kids are complaining! A NEW Contra in it's classic form, SROTJ the best of the series (even if you're not a Star Wars fan it's great, all you scrooges).
As for the DSiWare stuff, it does seem pretty crappy, I don't even have one or intend to get one. Don't expect them to get better very quickly, it's going to keep getting lots of "App" stuff; it's portable and there's too much competition from other platforms (mobiles/ iphones etc.) It's just not a good venue for great gamer favorites, there's too much money to be made with other crowds there. Again, I don't see why it's such a surprise that you're not getting top notch original Games on it. Buy the good DS retail games, thats where it shines.
WW games will always be more creative and fun for us since they're not just app cash-ins for developers.
And for the love of god let go of the Smash Brothers crap. If you're all such big fans don't you have some other version already or the old cartridge still?! Aren't there like 3 or 4 versions of it? Just be patient, and play one that you have till then.
Def. getting Contra Rebirth~
Can someone answer my question about the original Contra not being on VC or at least a theory!
Ok...I think Family Favorites is intended to be the Clubhouse Games Express game that launched with DSiWare in Japan. They share the same background color on the game icon and the same title screen color but they don't share the same games. Japan's version has basic games like Old Maid and I Doubt It and stuff so I imagine we might not get that version.
Or we will get a fourth Clubhouse Games Express, who knows.
Well Happy Labor Day guys, Sorry that Super Smash didn't get released today..
Don't apologize. Instead of a quality N64 game we got a quality SNES game. I'm down with that.
@Popyman: Of COURSE Gamestop is open today! Labor Day IS a shopping holiday, after all.
This release...I don't care too much for. I've never liked Contra, Colorz doesn't sound like my thing, I haven't even finished Super Star Wars yet (been busy playing other stuff), and I have the GOOD, complete version of Clubhouse Games. But hey...people seem to be pretty happy with Contra and Super Return of the Jedi, so good for them. I'll just turn my attention back to Dissida and be happy.
I'll get Jedi, I'm just wondering what Lucasarts will have next
They've got a working SCUMM emulator for the Wii, I'd love it if SCUMM were the next console supported by VC.
"AAAAAWAAAAAAAA"
"BOOHOOOHOOOHOOO"
"*SNIFF*SNIFF*WHERE'S MY SSB WAAAAAAAAAH"
Seriously, this gets old. Great update.
At least we're getting notable games for once.
mmm, i think i might pick up contra
it's sniff so good...so DS contra--in looooove <3
This is a nice update, I was expecting SRotJ, but I want Colorz too, mmm which to buy?
The new Contra looks good too, but I'd prefer to get Contra 3, and Rebirth is a tad expensive imo.
@Chunky- You mention SCUMM and that Superman guy shows up. What a coincidence.
Edit- Possibly a bit ironic too.
Now that the Star Wars trilogy is out Lucasarts, release Zombies Ate My Neighbors and Maniac Mansion!!! I'll get Contra and Jedi eventually.
@StarBoy: I only need one for the SNES and one for the VC, although I have Sonic Chaos and Sonic the Hedgehog. Hmmm
Call me nosy, but what is up with The Cow's latest rant? I don't see anyone provoking him, or was there a mass-comment deletion again?
@The Crow- When's IS the last time they had 2 VCs?
By the way. I'm glad you mentioned your condition. Help's to know your situation.
Sorry if you feel picked on. If we've said bad things to you it's because you've said some not so nice things to some of us (at least some of us have done this because of that.
Just try to be nicer to people and don't call them names and such. If you wan't people to treat you nice then you should treat them how you want to be treated.
Attacking everyone is not a good way to do this.
Sooner or later smash bro.s will com. Just try to keep yourself busy till it does.
Do you have an N64? I have one and smash bros 64. Maybe you can get one used online or at a garage sale.
Anyways. I have no problem with you here, as long as you're nice to me and others.
You and I got off on the wrong foot here. So I'd like to see if we can start over and let by gones be by gones? If you want that. Let me know. I'm more than willing to meet you half way.
I wouldn't mine talking to you. As long as you try to be nice to me, I'll be nice to you. ok?
@pixelman- Not that I'm aware of.
@The Cow: Gee. I didn't know you had aspergers. I'm sorry.
However, no offense, but you weren't always friendly. I'd want you to stay on these boards if you can be friendlier.
awesome, will definately pick up return of the jedi
God. Every week it's the same whining. "WHERE IS GAME X, I HATE YOU NINTENDO!!!11!!11"
Why the hell can't you people be happy with what you have got? There's like 1,000 (give or take) games available on the Wii, and it's STILL not enough. It doesn't matter that GAME X, which you so desparately want, is, in 99.99999% probability, going to come, you want it NOW. Flipnote Studio, Smash Brothers Melee, whatever.
I feel sorry for Nintendo. It's lose/ lose. If they released every retro game ever next week, you people would still be bitching that there isn't a new update the week after. It's pathetic.
Some of you are acting like spoiled five year old children. Shut up and grow up.
The Cow had always come off as hypocritical to me - saying how everyone else was rude when he was being just as rude or more so himself. I also thought he was trolling a few days ago when despite something being explained very simply, he would just not understand it (why people who paid 500 points for the Internet Channel would get a free NES game while those who didn't pay for the Internet Channel would not). His rants always came off as unprovoked and personal but I never detected any intended malice from him.
Now I don't know anything about Asberger's but if I ever decide to rant about something online, I like to read what I typed first, think about how people would react to what I said and about how it makes me look by saying such things. Usually I end up just not submitting a rant because I thought it through first.
And to respond to him, the reason why we're not up in arms against Nintendo every time they don't release the game we want when we want is that it gets boring being angry all the time. Most of us has realised that some games won't be coming any time soon or at all. We'd rather be pleasant to each other even when we don't get what we want because it makes for a better atmosphere.
That, and it's just a game. Even if it never gets released ever, it's not like you'll die, or never get to play a good game again.
People need to get upset about important things, rather than a videogame.
@Charly the Unicorn- The way he wrote things. I think I had a thought that he might have disability. Suppose I could have tried to react to him differently then, just in case. Now that it's certain, I'll definatly try keep this in mind when things like this happen.
Edit- Didn't his name say the Crow before?
@longtimegamer: I think so - I did a double take when I saw it say "The Cow" earlier today, haha.
I was poor when I was 6 and only had a N64 plus 4 games. Super Mario 64, Mario kart 64, Mario party 2, and Super smash bros 64. All I need aree the last 2 n64 then Ill be very happyu. Heres hoping next weekk.
Contra Rebirth: Insta-buy with my next points card/pre-paid credit card. Everything else? MEEEEEHHH!
@P. DANGER. I agree with you completely.
@Nintendork. You know, if you're so desperate to see Smash Bros. on VC, why don't you buy a used N64 and the actual cartridge? The two of them are as common as can be, and dirt-cheap to boot.
@The Crow, Cow, whatever. Your mental disorder doesn't make your pointless rants any less annoying. There's several autistic members on this site, and they never feel the need to go on weekly tirades like yourself.
@Metang. Uhhh... Racist? Are you sure you're reading the right post? Cuz I didn't see a single ounce of racism in his comment...
@Bass X0
I read his post (I don't read all comments when I check for the weekly update); after you guys were talking about him and it did seem kind of awkward to me, it's hard to tell if it's trolling or just a problem on its own...
enjoying contra, unfortunate it looks kind of ugly, and black bars on the sides don't help. And displaying scores onscreen would have been a good idea.
Contra is still quite hard. This is both good and bad hah hah...
Not a bad update at all. I'm really glad that the Super Star Wars games all have been released though, so now we can start hoping for Smash Bros and Pilotwings again. Also I still stand by my predictions that we will recieve Rondo of Blood next month as a Holloween release. Just you all wait and see.
@Ricardo91: See the thread about society declining. That's where he made racist comments.
To stretch the screen an remove the black bars go to display options.
