Frog Coins are a special type of currency in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and the Switch remake that can only be spent in a select amount of shops.
However, Frog Coins are your only way of buying certain healing items and a few unique accessories, and you'll come across plenty of ways to earn them in Super Mario RPG.
In this guide, we'll be telling you all about Frog Coins, how to earn them, how to farm them, and where to spend them. Ribbit.

Super Mario RPG: Frog Coin Guide
What are Frog Coins?
Frog Coins are a second type of currency in the Super NES and Switch versions of Super Mario RPG. They're green in colour and have a little frog face on them. We think they're quite endearing.
Unlike ordinary gold coins, Frog Coins can only be spent in a handful of shops found in the game. They're also not as abundant as gold coins, but they are an unlimited resource — meaning there are plenty of ways to earn them. More on that in a bit.
Why do I need Frog Coins?
Frog Coins allow you to buy certain healing items and other items that you otherwise can only find in treasure chests or as random drops against enemies.
Stat-boosting items like Bracers are exclusive to the Frog Coin shops. And if you want the Exp. Booster accessory, then you'll need some Frog Coins for that.
Are Frog Coins needed to beat the game?
Not really, no. Super Mario RPG isn't a particularly challenging experience, but if you're looking to take on some of the optional bosses and the Switch-exclusive post-game bosses, many of those healing items will come in handy in particular.
How to get Frog Coins
Frog Coins are available in a number of different ways. We'll cover every single method of collecting Frog Coins in the game. These methods are true for both versions of the game, but a handful are exclusive to the Switch version.
Hidden Treasures
If you're going around collecting all of the Hidden Treasures / Surprise Boxes, then you'll no doubt pick up some Frog Coins along the way.
Frog Coins are the most common reward from these hidden treasure chests, and they're an easy way to build them up early. Check out our guide on Hidden Treasures to get a list of locations for all of these invisible boxes.
Jump on Wigglers & Shoguns
Certain enemies in the overworld will actually reward you with Frog Coins if you jump on them a certain number of times.
Wigglers in Forest Maze will give you a Frog Coin if you jump on them 10 times in a row, whereas the Shogun enemies in Land's End's desert will give you a Frog Coin if you jump on them three times in a row.
Play some minigames
Almost all of the minigames in Super Mario RPG award you with Frog Coins. The ones that give you green coins are Midas River, Goomba Thumping (Pipe Vault), Booster Hill, Land's End Sky Bridge, Land's End Wall Climb, and Grate Guy's Casino.
Special Enemies
Special Enemies are exclusive to the Switch remake. These are less common, more powerful versions of ordinary enemies that can randomly appear in battle. You'll always know when you've got one as 'Special Enemy' will display under its name.
They take longer to defeat than other enemies, but every time you defeat one, you'll be rewarded with a Frog Coin.
Best farming methods for Frog Coins
So, there are a lot of ways to get Frog Coins, but what are the best ways to farm Frog Coins? You'll need a lot if you want to buy everything the Frog shops have to offer.
For our (frog) money, the best way to get Frog Coins is jumping on the Wiggler in Forest Maze. You can do this over and over again, and if you accidentally get into a battle with them, they're not hard to defeat.
Second is the Paratroopa Wall Climb at Land's End. You need to be very quick to do this — if you slip under 11 seconds, you'll get a Frog Coin every time. But this takes a lot of practice.
Midas River is our last suggestion — but you may need to practice this as well. For every 60 coins you can get one Frog Coin back. And, if you get 100 coins in one session, you'll get five frog coins.
Super Mario RPG: All Frog Coin Shops
There are only two stores that only accept Frog Coins as currency in Super Mario RPG. Here's where to find them and what they sell:
